Is it possible to restore previous session using bash script when fluxbox starts?
I'v installed wmctrl to have a terminal on desktop and I'v configure it with a script I'v found online.I'v add the script to startup menu interface from xfce (I don't know the us name cause I'v it version on system language), when I shutdown I'v save the session, and on the next log in seems that it is run twice, so if I disable the save session button when I log of but in that case it run in the previous status (dir/position)and I want that it run from startup menu from script file....so when I save the session where it save the status??...how can I skip that it run twice with the script running at startup???

Debian 8, Fluxbox 1.3.5. I'll go to bed and my system is fine, in the morning I notice my system is sluggish. Changing focus between iceweasel and terminator takes > 10 seconds.
Top is telling me fluxbox is using 100% cpu. My system has 4 cores. Load average is 1.8. Next highest cpu user is iceweasel at 35%. iowait is 0. 4 gigs of free ram.
I'm guessing fluxbox shouldn't be using so many cycles. How do I collect enough information about what fluxbox is doing to file a bug report?
My end goal here is to have my system be responsive, ie, it shouldn't take > 10 seconds to change window focus.
I've been browsing the fluxbox documentation and the web looking for answers to a couple of fluxbox configuration questions. I'm unfamiliar with fluxbox and hopefully my empty search is my unfamiliarity with fluxbox terminology. I'm building a web browsing appliance (basically a kiosk). The only purpose of the system is to provide a web browser for house guests.
I had good success disabling most features in fluxbox, such as limiting keyboard hotkeys, stripping the main and window menus, deleting all but one workspace, etc.I have not found solutions for the following:
1. Disabling the workspace pop-up menu. This menu appears with either the left or right mouse button. As most people using this system will be familiar with the traditional desktop model and expect a "Start" menu, I would like to disable that workspace pop-up menu. I don't want users to have access to any configuration options anywhere.
2. Add an Exit/Logout button to the toolbar. The desktop menu has such an option. A toolbar button would be nice but is not required.
3. Same as the previous but add a web browser button to the toolbar. The desktop menu has such an option. A toolbar button would be nice but is not required.
I just installed Lenny base and added Fluxbox as wm. I can start Fluxbox from root with "startx" command but only get a light blue screen that is frozen if I try to start Fluxbox from the command line user ID using "startx." I think that it might be an ownership problem but I'm not sure what files I should change the owrnship of, if any. Some of the in installation of fluxbox was done from the root directory instead of from the user directory using the sudo command.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOn xfce I really liked orage, however on fluxbox I don't want to install all its dependencies (xfce4-gui, xfce4panel, +++) for just a calendar. So, I'm looking for a light calendar app that will allow me to store appointments. Ideally it would integrate nicely with fluxbox, so either launchable by clicking on the clock, or else mapped transparently onto the desktop just like conky. If it could work with conky that would be pretty ideal as well, and it must have the ability to send notifications (either by sound or screen) about upcoming appointments, reminders, etc.
I've seen xcalendar mentioned on these forums, but it doesn't seem to be in the repos anymore (squeeze). Also rainlender, though I don't like that it's not in the repos and has pro/free versions. Sunbird is an option, but kind of large and clunky for what I'll be using it for. Right now I'm thinking gdeskcal is my best bet, but I'm hoping others will have better ideas. If gdeskcal fails to impress, I may have no choice but to go with sunbird (aka iceowl) and perhaps use conky to display the calendar on the desktop, and make it launchable from clicking the clock on fluxbox. My mail application is claws, which has some limited vlcalendar functionality.

I upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze.
I use Fluxbox as the window manager in X Window. I installed hibernate packages and gnome power management. I set the idle time at 30 minutes using the gnome power management program. It doesn't suspend at all. The monitor only shuts off during idle.
So, I logged in as root, started X. Without .xinitrc gnome desktop manager launched. As I clicked shutdown, it showed a dialog box asking hibernate / suspend / restart / etc. And then, I chose the [hibernate], the system shut down and came back to previous status when system restarted.
Which gnome program does control hibernate / suspend?
Is there anyway that I can control hibernate / suspend in command? I just need to make a little script and assign it to a launch key so that I can suspend the system when it's on idle.
I only just upgraded to Squeeze and am now running Fluxbox 1.1.1. The toolbar is acting strangely, though, and I can't seem to find a solution online.
An example: I open Iceweasel, Thunar, and Icedove. If Iceweasel has focus, its window title will be on the left side of the toolbar. If I switch applications, and put that Thunar window in focus, the Thunar window title because the most-left item on the toolbar. I focus Icedove, Icedove's window title becomes the most left object on the toolbar and so on.

recently Firefox/Minefield started to stop loading sites after some time and when exiting Firefox, the process would keep running in the background, so I have to kill it. When I did this yesterday, Firefox no longer restored my tabs from last session like usual. There's a sessionstore.bak in my profile folder whose size is 1.3 MB and seems to be intact.
Still, when renaming it to sessionstore.js, Firefox will still not load my tabs - it just displays the start page. This applies to both Firefox 3.6 and Minefield. I tried a sessionstore backup from five days ago, but the result is the same. Is there anything else I need to do to get Firefox to restore my tabs? Session restore in general does not seem to be broken, because when I open a few new tabs and save them, they are restored the next time I start Firefox.
I have a few questions related to the 'Save Session for Future Login' option you can check (and is checked by default) when you go to shutdown/restart/etc.
1) What exactly does checking this option and shutdown/restarting do?
2) Is there any way to have it unchecked by default?
3) Is there any way to completely remove the option?
I haven't installed ubuntu but using it from my Pen drive. The major problem I am facing is I am not able to save my current session. For example I will download and install a couple of software like 'WINE', 'java plugin' and other useful software for me, but when I shutdown everything is lost and I get a new copy of OS on my next start-up.I can't install a copy ubuntu on my hard disk as I have only single partition on which windows is running.

View 10 Replies View RelatedThis is regarding the 'screen' utility. I use an utility called 'HummingBird Exceed' to get the XSession of a linux client on my windows desktop (basically it uses XDMCP). But the pain is that at the end of the day, when I close Exceed, the session gets destroyed. I did lot of searching on the web to know how the save and restore session in Exceed, but failed. However, I found that 'screen' is the utility which keeps the session intact even when you logout. So, I did the following:
a. Logged into the machine using Putty (terminal emulator).
b. Started 'screen'.
c. Issued the command: /usr/bin/gnome-session
I got the XSession on the Exceed and started working. I opened three or four gnome-terminals. But when I logout of exceed(and detach from the screen), the screen displayed a message saying that 'Connection to XServer was lost". Hence I could not restore to this session when I reattached to the screen. how do I use 'screen' so that when I attach to the screen on which I had started gnome-session, it attempts to connect to the Xserver and open the session as it was before detaching?
Where has the possibility to auto-save session on logout gone in 11.04? Or even just save a session at any point?It has been filed as a bug on URL... but I fear it has been (re)moved on purpose..

I have a problem with the Display Manager Kdm, if i log out session the monitor turns off (DVI No Signal), the only option that I have it's forced shutdown or reboot via power button. I try another DM lightdm and this works fine. But i liked to know why log out session crash on Kdm.
Adding : TerminateServer=true at the end of /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc (Section :[X-:*-Core], solve the issue.
When I start a second X session using startx --:1, (as either my normal user or root), it goes straight into and LXDE session (Debian's default, I think). Once LXDE is started, there is no applications menu (only run and logout). How do I get it to show the full application menu that my regular user can see when I log in from GDM3 normally?
View 2 Replies View RelatedTo use most of my Kali applications, I want to be able to log into an X session as root. I know it is generally a bad idea and I don't want to do it as a rule, but it is useful for penetration testing (e.g. nmap and its GUI don't have most of the useful options when run as a regular user).
So how do I get GDM3 to allow me to log in as root? Currently, if I type in the user name "root" and log in, it just takes me back to GDM3. Could it work to add root to my user group (I really don't want to add all kinds of security holes)?
I recently installed debian 8 stretch with xfce. Since the first time I boot, I have problem starting my X session: from lightdm I always attemped 2 or 3 times before it login (it returned me on lightdm prompt after a short splash screen).
Now it stopped working: the only way I can start xsession is running startx as root. When I try as user it starts the "splash" and return me to the tty with this error message:

I try to reconfigure Xorg but the Xorg -configure command result in another segmentation fault.
I think that the problem could be related with old configuration (when I install this version of debian I maintain the /home partition and my previous OS was debian 7 with xfce).

I remember on my last session i got some icons on my home folder with a little lock icon on them i tried to remove them successfully using the command line but i still can't login. however i can successfully login with another user.
What is the Failsafe Session Type that you can select from the KDM login screen supposed to do ? With Squeeze RC1, if I attempt to log in to a failsafe session, I am returned to the KDM login screen. This does not seem very failsafe to me but then I am not a desktop expert. With Lenny (5.0.7), I get a single console window, which, I guess, at least gives one a chance of fixing whatever may be stopping the normal KDE session from starting.

after the upgrade to maverick, gnome-session-save doesn't save applications on shutdown or logout as it did on Lucid.I've noticed the following things:
On Lucid, if I had a stopped job in a shell, the system refused to logout or shutdown, showing a confirmation window. On Maverick, the CPU goes to 100% and then the computer shuts down; on reboot, no application is saved
On Maverick, if there are NO stopped jobs in a shell, I can logout cleanly but only a few applications are saved (eg. terminal, firefox) but others aren't (eg. empathy,evolution) I've checked "Automatically remember application on exit" in "Session management" menu.
I used to use kubuntu last years, but I decide to give Ubuntu a try instead.A thing that was working on kubuntu's KDE by default, is that when you close your session, the system remembers what applications was you using, so in the next boot up they will be open exactly as it was.I would like to have this feature also on my Ubuntu 10.04, but I've been not lucky searching for the option to enable it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed jessie from a beta/rc shortly before release on my MacBook Pro 13 Retina and have kept it up to-date with apt-get dist-upgrade. Rcently gdm3/gnome-session have stopped working together. When I log in the screen goes black for a couple of seconds then goes back to the login screen. This happens with "System Default", "GNOME Classic" and "GNOME", but not with "GNOME on Wayland". However, Wayland seems to have some other issues. I haven't tried an alternative dm yet, eg lightdm, but the GNOME desktop does work when started with startx.
I've just used journalctl to get logs of what gdm3 and gnome-session were doing at the time. After booting I waited until the clock reached the next minute (19:55) so I'd know at which point in the logs I'd hit enter on my password. I'll post the gdm log separately in two chunks because the forum server doesn't seem to like text attachments and they're too long for one post.

I have an app I've developed in Qt 5.3.1 that has display problems when using 3D accerelation in VirtualBox using Debian Cinnamon. It seems to happen with Cinnamon in any Linux distro I've tried. Once I boot into Debian Cinnamon, how can I stop my Cinnamon session (I think I must start with Ctrl+Alt+F1) , then get a straight X session to run my app without Cinnamon, with 3Dacceleration in VirtualBox?
