Jun 12, 2011

Using more than one instance of the same app is a real pita in Unity. If I have 3 (or more) pdf documents open in evince then there isn't a way to shift from one to the other using the mouse. Previously I had the windows on the taskbar and could click on the one I wanted. In Unity clicking on the evince icon on the launcher just brings ALL the instances of evince to the top - I still then have to shuffle the windows around to get the one I want.I've been trying to get used to Unity over the last few days, so maybe I am just doing it wrong, but if not then maybe I should file a bug report?

When working in an XP VirtualBox I can't use Alt-Tab to switch to my Linux Apps as VirtualBox captures the keys for Windows. So I tended to make a lot of use on the Application list on the old System Tray/Taskbar. I could click on the application's entry in the taskbar and that application would come up. When I needed to return to the Windows App, I clicked again and the application would then minimise so I can see the Windows app. Also I have been using the SUPER button in conjunction with 'E' to raise the Home Directory (just to keep it consistent with Windows).

There is no clock on my panel after the 11.3 install. I don't get it. I unlock the widgets and there is a digital clock there, but I cannot drag it to the panel, only the desktop. So I suppose there is another way of adding it. The standard clock is not a widget?

I installed LinuxMint to an external hard drive and had vista on my interal drive. After doing this, the only way my computer would boot up was if I had the external drive plugged inThen I accidentaly dropped my external drive and broke it. I decided to just install Fedora 11 onto my internal drive primarily because I figured it would would still be able to choose windows from the grub screen, but now there is no option for windows in grub. My other problem is that Fedora wont recognize any liveCDs that have tried to run from other distros (eg. LinuxMint7, Open SUSE)

1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

Perhaps I might be a minority demographic here, but I am. Is there a way and how? Ubuntu Software Center doesn't seem to have this option. I come from a long history of being a Windows power user, and I am picking up pretty quickly with this stuff. I find QT ones leave little screen droppings and it bugs me to no end. Some might not, but I like it to be kind of GTK pure. If I wanted a QT app I would have picked Kubuntu with KDE. I admit that it is kind of cool that you can run an app from another desktop and vice versa. I am not trying to start a flame war, nor am I dissing any of the developers that may have made some awesome QT application I may not know about. Is there another software center like thing I can install that at least combines all the QT and GTK ones into separate groups rather than making me fend for myself?

I use some kde applications in gnome such as k3b, basket notes, kover kreator and amarok. These pull in a large amount of dependencies and need the occasional tweak to get them running smoothly. Although I prefer the gnome desktop would I be any better installing the kde desktop and then running the applications from the gnome menu? Would there be any advantage to this rather than installing them individually into gnome?

I've been searching all over ubuntu-land the last two hours for anything about configuring Unity and I'm coming up a little short. Can anybody point me to some documentation that I may have missed?
I figured out how to pin apps to the sidebar, but I'd like to configure the "Favorites" folders and just see what other options can be customized.
I would have thought right-clicking (anywhere) would have helped, but I get nowhere.

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 (and all updates applied) any(?) KDE app causes Ubuntu to crash. (X restarts and the login screen is presented.)This happens immediately when opening kolourpaint, after clicking add file in krename, and after clicking "ok" to set up krusader for the first time.

firefox plays sound in videos, system bell works at startup and shutdown, and i can play a test sound in "system settings --> multimedia --> phonon". but in several other apps, sound doesn't work, e.g. thunderbirds makes no sound when new mail arrives, although beeping is enabled, it only shows an alert; the same in my chess program. it all worked fine in kubuntu 10.04, now i have kubuntu 10.

I was forced (by an unrelated problem) to reinstall my Kubuntu 10.10 from scratch today, and now I'm having a very annoying problem with the look of GTK apps in KDE.
I know I have to install gtk2-engines-qtcurve to make them blend in, and I know I need to copy some gtkrc files to /root to make it work for apps needing root privileges (e.g. Synaptic).
This has done the job for 80%, but they still don't look the way I they used to in my previous installation (which was Kubuntu 10.10 as well). As you can see in the two attachments, in applications run as a normal user the menu bar is lighter than it should be, and in applications run as root the entire window is this light.

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my mom's computer. I've also installed a few programs like Emesene and PPStream for her to use. My mom can get in the way of it but when she runs PPStream, she always gets a popup prompting to enter the password. IT can get irritating at times. I know PPStream is safe so I don't want it to have to keep asking me for the password. I installed it from a Deb. Can I stop the program from askign for the password and jsut work?
