Ubuntu Networking :: Firefox Not Prompting To Restore Browsing Session?
Oct 17, 2010
When I started using Firefox It always used to prompt me if I wanted to save the session to start next time when it closed. I accidentally clicked not to ask me to do this action again. And now I want that pop-up box back and I can't find a setting to get it back

recently Firefox/Minefield started to stop loading sites after some time and when exiting Firefox, the process would keep running in the background, so I have to kill it. When I did this yesterday, Firefox no longer restored my tabs from last session like usual. There's a sessionstore.bak in my profile folder whose size is 1.3 MB and seems to be intact.
Still, when renaming it to sessionstore.js, Firefox will still not load my tabs - it just displays the start page. This applies to both Firefox 3.6 and Minefield. I tried a sessionstore backup from five days ago, but the result is the same. Is there anything else I need to do to get Firefox to restore my tabs? Session restore in general does not seem to be broken, because when I open a few new tabs and save them, they are restored the next time I start Firefox.

I have installed the latest released version of openSUSE, 10.3 or so, and I am having an issue getting the internet to work. The system tells me that I am connected to my wireless network, but firefox does not browse, indicating that it cannot find the network. I'm totally stumped because if my wireless network is connected, why can't I browse?

I am running Ubuntu, and I was wondering if there are any settings that I can change in order to remove to make it so that users of the computer cannot delete the history in Firefox without a password. I am even willing to switch to another Internet browser if necessary.

This is regarding the 'screen' utility. I use an utility called 'HummingBird Exceed' to get the XSession of a linux client on my windows desktop (basically it uses XDMCP). But the pain is that at the end of the day, when I close Exceed, the session gets destroyed. I did lot of searching on the web to know how the save and restore session in Exceed, but failed. However, I found that 'screen' is the utility which keeps the session intact even when you logout. So, I did the following:
a. Logged into the machine using Putty (terminal emulator).
b. Started 'screen'.
c. Issued the command: /usr/bin/gnome-session
I got the XSession on the Exceed and started working. I opened three or four gnome-terminals. But when I logout of exceed(and detach from the screen), the screen displayed a message saying that 'Connection to XServer was lost". Hence I could not restore to this session when I reattached to the screen. how do I use 'screen' so that when I attach to the screen on which I had started gnome-session, it attempts to connect to the Xserver and open the session as it was before detaching?

When browsing at the main page of [URL] firefox uses 100% of my CPU capacity. I have the flashblock addon installed, which allows me to control whether embedded flash applications are run or not, so it is not due to flash.

I've been fiddling with Ubuntu for the first time ever today and eventually managed to get the drivers for the network adapter installed. Now, I'm trying to get the computer running it onto my home network; I set it up to connect automatically, entered the WEP key, and hit apply, marveling at how convenient it was.
...So far it's still caused me less trouble than some of the the bizarre problems I've had trying to get a Windows computer on a network, but...it just won't connect. At all. It says it is connecting, eventually prompts me for the key again, says it is connecting again, etc, repeat on infinite loop. Except for the occasional times that it stops trying and then, oddly enough, proceeds to state that it is not connected to e of neighbor's network*, which it wasn't trying to connect to in the first place

I have 4 machines running 10.04 32 bit Intel--- all use SSH to connect to a remote server drive (disk). All except one of the machines work just fine when accessing the remote drives. The fourth PC keeps asking for a password with every directory change.
If I select cancel three times (on the troublesome unit), the desired directory opens but then the same routine occurs with the next directory change.

I just upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Now when I use vpnc to connect from the command line using vpnc-connect, I'm not only prompted for my password as usual, but now also being prompted for a "Passcode". Here's what the login attempt looks like:
Enter password for jegan@some.vpnhost.net:
Passcode for VPN jegan@216.23.18.33:
I've been using the same /etc/vpnc/default.conf file for years.Note that I do not have an /etc/vpnc.conf, or any of the other configuration files that vpnc checks for. Here's a modified copy of my /etc/vpnc/default.conf file:

On my computer, I'm using 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 and Firefox 3.6.8. Firefox is so s...l...o...w..... It's slow loading and it's slow browsing. Konqueror takes 1, maybe 2 seconds to load, and another second to load the home page. Firefox takes a good 30 seconds to load. The only message I get when loading from a terminal is about not using a shared database. I don't hear the disk churning like it would with a fragmented disk.
I can't believe everyone is having this response, the hue and cry would be enormous! Anything to try? Should I try loading another browser? I tried Opera on 11.2 and didn't really like it, had problems with a lot of content. What about Sea Monkey (Gad, I HATE words with monkey in them!) Konqueror won't show a lot of videos and I have problems using the back and forward buttons. I'll wait for fixes but in the meantime.

I'm not sure why, but over the last couple of days when I browse the web with my Centos 5.3 machine running firefox 3.0.5, it takes a very long time to load web pages. Loading the app itself is pretty quick, and I have not issues with system resources (it's an HP Proliant ML115 server, with dual opteron processors & 3Gb RAM). Looking at CPU & disk useage there's nothing out of the ordinary:
top - 18:59:19 up 1 day, 22:54, 2 users, load average: 0.28, 0.90, 1.20
Tasks: 162 total, 1 running, 161 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 2.2%us, 0.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 96.0%id, 1.5%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st

Swap: 2031608k total, 0k used, 2031608k free, 1241912k cached

Just this Konqueror issue bothers me really bad. So decide to share it here and see if anyone has a better solution.
Java support is really poor in konqueror.
For example,
1. on webex.com and just try to join a test meeting. It never opens the meeting window however there is no error or any kind prompt.
2. facebook.com, if you try to upload a picture, you have to choose simple uploading tool in konqueror in order to do the job.
Why java can not be made work properly like in firefox and chrome? Is there any critical hurdle that I did not know?
My solution: use konqueror for normal browsing and switch to firefox or chrome for java sites. This bothers, right?

I can't quantify the behavior, but every time I run Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (32-bit), I get the impression that I'm using a much slower machine. All I have to compare it to is my Windows 7 64-bit install on the same machine (specs in signature), where almost everything is very snappy by comparison.
I don't have skipping audio or delayed video when watching DVDs in VLC Media Player, and Urban Terror (a 3D game) runs fine, but just general stuff like browsing the filesystem (Nautilus) and Firefox seems reaaaaallly sluggish compared to the Windows 7 counterparts.
What I'm doing at the time does not appear to affect the sluggishness. I have noticed the same impression of sloth both while copying large files, and while doing nothing in particular. That's not how it's supposed to work, is it? Does an Ubuntu install normally slow down over time? I have only been running 10.04 LTS since last October or so.

When configured to save and restore running applications (System, Preferences, Start-up Applications, Options) the restoration of Firefox instances prompts for profile.
In my case Firefox was running with several different profiles. Each one was started with "-no-remote" and "-P [profile-name]".
Any ideas? Would it be possible to auto-close only Firefox windows?

Adding Firefox add-ons to Guest Session?I wanted to include Add-on to Ubuntu Guest Session Firefox. Is there a proper or better way to do this? Procedure I used was as follows
1. Login to Ubuntu to a user account with sudo privileges (later sudoer account).
1. Switch to Guest Session
2. Install relevant Add-ons
3. Check what the home folder of the Guest Session is. It should be something like /tmp/guest-home.xxxxxx where xxxxxx = six random characters.
4. Switch to sudoer account
5. Open terminal and type
Code:
gksudo nautilus
[code]....
I tested this with Flashblock and it seemed to work. I also admit that since I did the thing for the first time it was not that straight forward for me, but above procedure should work. With quick Googling I was unable to find straight forward method. There is a way to install Add-ons to all users from command line using -install-global-extension but this was not what I wanted to do. I wanted the Add-on just for the temporary guest account.

I had FF and TB running on a desktop computer which was on Suse 11.0. That computer has gone to the Great Interrupt in the Sky. The hard drive still works, and I can hook it up to the replacement (laptop) with an eSATA cable. Thus, all of my email, settings, bookmarks, etc are sitting there waiting to go back to work.
My new laptop is on Suse 11.2, with the FF version which came on the DVD (from Linux Pro Magazine in February). I would like to A), load the latest vers of FF and TB onto this laptop, and B), move my older FF and TB stuff to run here. I am little more than the ignorant appliance operator so derided by Linux gurus in the "Why New Users Give Up" thread. I want to learn more, but my primary need is PRODUCTIVITY, so what I need is an 1D10T-level stepthrough to get done what I need to do.

Browsing via SSH Tunnel very slow When browsing in firefox at work via proxy through ssh on my 8.04 server the speed is near dial up. I have compression enabled, tried restarting ssh, and rebooting the server but it remains so sluggish. At home the connection is quick but the speed is lost in translation once I ssh in. I also tried adding "UseDNS no" to the ssh config but that did not help with the slow login or any other speed issues.

my computer is very slow to view regular web pages, and generally fails to load them. It seems to be a problem specifically with webpages - I can work over SSH, use email, transfer files over FTP connections, with no noticeable problems, but any regular website (including this one) can take an age to load. This happens regardless of the browser I use (at least, it happens on Firefox, Opera, and Chromium), and regardless of wired or wireless connection (though admittedly I've not tried using a wired connection very much). As far as I can tell, it can also happen on any website. It is specific to linux - my computer is dual-boot ubuntu 10.04/Windows XP, and there is no networking problem when I use Windows.

I've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox, opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.
I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network
