been working like a charm. booting up flawlessly to desktop and then I decided to change my backround and now when I boot I get just past the ubuntu with the dots screen and then a mostly black with a few white and red scratches. if I go to recovery and then start x, boot up is flawless.
After a lot of updates yesterday I have found that Lucid will no longer boot, I just get a blank screen that has a cursor flashing in the top left corner. I can't boot into recovery mode to see what the issue(s) might be because I took that option out when I ran update-grub.My question is this, is there a way to run update-grub -either from a live-cd or grub-rescue mode- that would put the recovery boot option back in? I have already edited the /etc/default/grub file to comment out the field.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIm dual booting vista and ubuntu 10.10 when i start up i get the option to boot linux OR i can boot window recovery (loader) which works or i can choose windows xp which doesnt even work and im not sure why its there since i dont have xo installed and i never have on this pc. it doesnt say anything about vista anywhere.
My question is...is this a problem? it seems to work fine but i dont want to have problems later on.
This started a few days ago and I checked back through recently installed packages and nothing looks related. If I boot into ubuntu normally, plymouth looks a mess, but then things boot fine but while the mouse is showing and ubuntu goes about with connecting to networks and so on, but it doesn't register the and input from the mouse or keyboard. It will sleep if you press the power button, but its no more responsive after waking up.
If I boot into recovery mode, and use the failsafe graphics option then everything runs fine. Apart from 3D graphics being pretty slow, which I can kind of understand. I get the same behaviour on all of the last three kernels. I'm running the latest maverick on an HP 6715b. i386 version although the processor is 64 bit compatible. 2Gb RAM.

I have been using this configuration successfully for months, after quite a bit of work fixing the sound issues, wifi issues and video issues. It still has a standby issue, but its liveable and Im quite happy with its performance for such an inexpensive machine.
I tried to boot to XP today, and I must have picked the recovery partition by mistake out of the grub menu.
It loaded "windows pre-execution environment" and then asked me if i wanted to run recovery. I told it to cancel before it did anything, or so I thought.
It only had 10-15 seconds, so whatever it did couldn't have been much.
When it rebooted I got this error.

I set the default login to recovery console on the login screen options. Now I am stuck at the recovery console and don't know how to change the settings on the terminal screen to get back to desktop.

I must have deleted a file or done something wrong because now when I start ubuntu11.04, my startup stalls at the blackscreen where it lists the output of current operations. Mine seems to stall at checking pulseaduio or stall at checking cron. I am not totally certain of the phrases but anyway, my only way to log in is to ctrl+alt F1 and sign in that way followed by startx. I copied some exact info down and here is where my computer usually stalls:
Screen says, Starting CUPS printing spooler/server [ok]
Checking battery state... [ok]
Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [ok]
This is the usual stopping stop for my computer.
I'm having a pretty serious problem, whenever I try to boot into Ubuntu the screen goes black, I see a flash of purple or violet and then i get a prompt asking for my login credentials, afterwards I'm stuck with a terminal trying to start the gui... I don't know what I'm doing wrong, fresh install tried to reboot after getting the display driversinstalled idk if that could be a problem. I tried to commands in the terminal already:

sudo service gdm start

I have a Computer, It came with Windows 7 64bit on it. I installed Ubuntu through WUBI. I used the Windows Disk Management program to resize my HDD. I shrunk the main drive and created a 20 gig free space. I installed WindowsXP on this 20g space. I had to change from AHCI to ATA. I started my new XP installation. As I should have expected my the screen that let me pick between Windows 7 and Ubuntu was gone, and it just said XP. Well thats cool. I get in XP use bcdeasy and use the install Win7 to mbr. So I restarted. Great I now I have Ubuntu and Win7... but no XP. So i think, okay, ill boot into Ubuntu, use the update grub command and XP will be there, so i do it and restart. No XP, So i try to boot into Win7 and see if i can do something in there.. No luck it says it can't boot and takes me to a startup recovery thing. Which, as Windows recovery things tend to do, doesn't find anything wrong. So I have Ubuntu now, which is great, but I do need Windows.

Ever since the kernel update to 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64, my boot process hangs at about startx time. I boot cleanly at runlevel 3 in either this or the previous 2.6.33.8 kernel. If I execute startx from here (in either kernel), the system hangs at the same place. During the early troubleshooting, I read in another thread (250929) about installing xorg-x11-drv-catalyst, which I did using yum. This led to the failure of the 2.6.33 kernel; yum remove did not fix this. I have carefully followed the instructions in the fglrx HOWTO (updated a week ago by Hlingler) as they relate to a PAE kernel (including reinstalling mesa-libGL), and that fixed earlier difficulties. Hence, I felt I needed a new thread.

This program is for updating the microcode on Intel processors belonging to the IA32 family - PentiumPro upwards (x86-64 included). It depends on the Linux kernel driver. The website urbanmyth.org/microcode (mentioned by yum info microcode_ctl) clearly indicates that Intel has taken over this microcodecode distribution, and suggests that it is no longer valid for AMD processors.
I found a reference to a kernel configuration flag CONFIG_MICROCODE_AMD (as a plausible subsititute for CONFIG_MICROCODE_INTEL) that possibly belongs in a script in /etc/init.d - but the above context leads me to suspect this is not true any more. In any event, those flags are not mentioned anywhere in my init.d scripts - in fact nowhere in the entire /etc tree. My microcode file exists, and is dated March 23. How do I get it installed? Or is this completely unrelated to my hanging boot problem, as suggested by the "platform microcode" line in the dmesg output? If so, where should I be looking?
After tweeking some graphics settings, and replacing some hardware, ubuntu won't boot. Being left in the X session (CTRL + ALT + f7), it's what looks like a log:

^ and that's where it hangs. So I went into ctrl alt f1, and logged in with my user/pass, and did the command: startx the screen flashes, and brings me back to a failed to open devices report.

I tried re-installing GDM, but turns out that the PC isn't actually online, hence unable to install GDM after uninstallation. So I downloaded the gdm .deb, and tried to install it from a USB flash drive, but I get dependency errors. I'm at a loss here, I could really use some help, this is the PC that has all my data on it, 450 GB +, I'd love to not have to transfer that over to a new installation!
I'm having a huge problem right now and I could use some help deciphering what's wrong.I can't get my system to boot (see signature) and even the recovery mode is buggered. henever I try to boot, all I get is a flashing underscore. However, when it got buggy (without his knowledge or consent), his kids overwrote his OS by installing a warez edition of Windows 7 Ultimate. Unfortunately, that wiped out all his data, including photos of his late wife that he does not have backed up. I want to recover those if possible. I don't want to install anything because that may overwrite the photos if they're still there in some shape or form.
What I'm wondering is if there's a DVD-bootable distro of Linux specifically for data recovery. If I could boot to that, I could run its data recovery utilities without danger of putting anything on the hard drive. Once I've recovered the photos and backed them up to an external hard drive, I'm going to make his PC legal by installing Ubuntu. That's no problem. I'm very up to speed on that. What I need to learn is the best data recovery strategy via some type of bootable Linux. I suspect someone has written such a tool given how often people lose data due to viruses, accidental deletions, formats, etc.
Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. I am attempting to try install XUbuntu.
I loaded the dvd (one that came with Linux Format Magazine No. 139), changed BIOS to boot from dvd, and then:
I get the welcome screen with the options to boot Ubuntu, KUbuntu, XUbuntu or Boot from First Hard Disk. As I have an older laptop I was going to try XUbuntu. However, the arrow keys did not change the boot option. In fact nothing worked, Tab did not bring up a menu and Enter did not initiate boot.
I tried reloading the dvd, switching off the laptop (no way to shutdown) and restarting but always come up with the same problem.
My DVD drive works fine and the dvd appears not to be faulty since all the info is readable when it is loaded with windows running.

This is an urgent problem. I removed my propreitary ati display drivers because I had to update them but I don't know what happened. Now I can't boot. The screen shows the Ubuntu splash screen but then the login screen does not come on. I get a blank screen. Worst of all, I had removed Recovery entries from the grub so I can't boot into recovery mode so easily. It's urgent. I don't want to reinstall with my exams a week away.

I searched and people are mentioning logging into the terminal and what not, but I cant get to a terminal so that kind of silly. People also talking about updating their video cards for this issue, which also is not my problem.
as Ubuntu is my only OS on this box.I had this PC running as a server for a few months with few reboots.I installed updates as usual yesterday, and hadn't changed anything configuration-wise since the last reboot. Well last night this server that I was running was moved to another Windows box and so I finally got to shut this PC down for the night. In the morning, I was greeted with an endless splash screen. It went on for 20 minutes without anything. I did update the kernel through update manager.
So what do I do? This machine has a 1TB HDD with a lot of very important data on it--reformatting is not a considerable option at this point. Which is bad because I don't know what else I could so when even recovery mode isn't working...
I had many problems with installing kubuntu 11.04 on my laptop HP Elitebook 8560p and after downloading different iso everything works well, but sistem freezeout and would not reboot also in recovery mode that would load untill Recovery menu when system won't responde.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got a, as it seems to me, strange problem.I've inadvertently deleted my user from the group admin so I'm in the same situation of a lot of other users (read a lot of messages about it).My problem is that when restarted in recovery mode there is no way I can choose the 'drop to the root shell' or similar in the menu.The menu appears for a second and then I've got an empty screen. If I press a key I've been requested for a username and password that of course is not what I need.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to 9.10 Karmic Koala, my Amilo Laptop (AMD64) refuses to boot. I installed GRUB2 which works fine for my WinXP ... and Karmic will boot in recovery mode.
When trying a normal boot, I get a black screen. CRTL-ALT-F1 yields just a blinking cursor. The system will immediately reboot when pressing CRTL-ALT-Entf.
When booting in recovery mode, I choose "Resume normal boot" from the menu, log in while in cosole mode and enter "startx" ... and the grafic environtment works fine!
Why does the system work in recovery mode, but does not start with a normal boot?

I have GRUB on my laptop with Ubuntu and Windows 7. GRUB and Windows 7 seem to boot just fine, but recently, Ubuntu doesn't boot. My suspected cause is simply because I've often shut down unofficially. My laptop doesn't have a battery, and even the AC connection is awry, so as soon as an accidental disconnection or something occurs (because it too is broken), it'll essentially shut down.
I try booting Ubuntu, and it doesn't boot. I think I see that Ubuntu and the dots page, but it'll hang there (and I waited overnight). Immediately, I want to run an fsck, but I seem to be unable to, so I run Recovery Mode. I always get a forever loop of a bunch of stuff that doesn't make sense to me, but this is one thing that I always see (or something similar).

View 9 Replies View RelatedI started a thread over in installations and upgrades in which I was trying to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 using the upgrade manager. My computer froze in the middle of the process, requiring me to restart my computer. When I try rebooting Ubuntu, I get an error message "The configuration defaults for Gnome power manager have not been installed correctly" and then a blank screen. No mouse pointer, no cursor. It will not take me to the Ubuntu desktop screen. I've already found the sudo commands I can run to try and fix Ubuntu. They are as follows:
sudo apt-get clean (If the problem is not having enough free hard drive space)
sudo dpkg --configure -a (If the problem deals with the upgrade installation process)
However, what I can't get is the terminal to come up to run these commands. In the other thread I started, someone mentioned that in the Grub menu, you can choose "recovery mode", hit "enter" to boot it, and it will give you a menu of options to choose from. However, when I choose "recovery mode" and hit "enter", I do not get a menu but instead 3 pages of data about my computer that ends with this:

It gives me a blinking cursor at the very end but I cannot type anything and I cannot page up to see the 3 pages of data. What I am looking for is a way to get to the recovery mode menu OR somehow open up a terminal so I can run the sudo commands. My computer automatically logs me in, so I do not get a login screen and Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not work for me. Anyone know how I can open a terminal with only access to the Grub menu? Perhaps a BASH command that I can use in the command line that will open up a terminal? To summarize: My computer does not boot Ubuntu. I get an error message followed by a blank screen. It does not go into the desktop screen so I cannot choose Applications->Accessories->Terminal.
My Grub menu consists of Ubuntu and it's version, Ubuntu and it's version with recovery mode, memtest, and Windows XP (I have a dual boot system). In the Grub menu, I can select "e" for edit, "c" for command line and "enter" to boot either regular Ubuntu OS or Ubuntu recovery mode. "Sudo" commands are not recognize if I choose the command line for either Ubuntu OS or recovery mode. I have a Live CD for 10.04 but you cannot run sudo commands because you do not have access to root on the Live CD.
I'm dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 7. On my 7 partition I have Paragon Backup and Recovery Suite installed. This program has a boot screen, "press F6 to enter recovery console." Well, I have a boot disk for that console, rendering the boot screen useless to me. In addition to that, it replaces Grub2, so every time I want to boot Ubuntu I have to boot the livecd and reinstall grub. Is there any way to remove this boot screen?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've set up a triple boot system (Ubuntu Karmic, Windows Vista and OSX86 -- a patched OS X which works on a PC) on a Dell 9200 (C2D 2.13 GHz, 4GB RAM, nVidia G210). I sue Grub2 as the bootloader and update-grub picks up OS X and it boots without any problem.
However, although when booting OS X using its own Darwin bootloader, I can apply the boot option "Graphics Mode"="1680x1050x32" to ensure that I get the screen resolution that I want, when OS X boots from Grub2, the only resolution available is 1024x768 which is disappointing. I have tried adding gfxmode=1650x1050x32 to the OS X section of /boot/grub/grub.cfg in Ubuntu but this does nothing.
i'm a recent convert from windows and my first few days with this os have been great. to think i've been living in the dark all this time...
anyway, my question is about the boot screen in bios. normally it booted up thusly:

but today, the boot screen showed two instances of ubuntu generic, its recovery mode, and the memory thing (i forget what it's called exactly. do you know what i mean?). i installed the os only once.
I have a 8.04 x64 server installation that is receiving a kernel panic on boot no matter which kernel I choose even recovery mode.

I have built a new server, now I am trying to restore my db from mysql. I have a backup that is out dated, I was hoping there was a way to copy the files over and have them work on the new installation. I can boot the server with the installation cd using recovery mode, I can get to the hdd and mount a smbfs share from the new server. I have tried to cp the files retaining the permissions and get a permission denied error, but if I copy without retaining the perms they copy just fine and do not work.
I have setup the new server with very close to the same version of all software. I have built a new instance of my service using all of the same users and passwords. I then backed up the new db and moved it over and attempted to copy the old db over. I did not copy it straight to the mysql folder as I did not share that folder out. Any other ideas to get this db recovered? What about getting my old server to run again just long enough to get a mysql dump?
