I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 alongside Win XP. I can boot into both fine. However, I no longer see the Win XP boot menu that allowed me to go into the Windows Recovery Console if I needed it. Previously with Ubuntu 8 & 9 this was briefly available after selecting the Win XP option from the grub menu, but not any more. How do I get it back?
View 2 RepliesI've been using opensuse 11.2 and windows xp at parallel. After I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.
I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.
After all, i boot with opensuse livecd to run the grub and got my opensuse back.
How can I installed windows on a opensuse installed system? My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.
I upgraded on Thursday to Natty
I was using Classic - no effects
I allowed an update today and now when I boot I can only get to recovery console
If I select Ubuntu Classic I get

I have seen a hundred post to just boot into the Recovery console and reset the users password, but when I do it asks for a password before I can do anything. I know there are Windows Password hack utilities, are there any for Linux/Ubuntu? Any other options? Can I use a live cd to access the config file or something?
View 9 Replies View RelatedYes thats right. Last night I changed my logon password for better security. (have a feeling my flatmate knows it). When I tried to log in today, it wouldn't accept my password. No I know that I got it correct. I know this for a fact. So after a few tries, I decided stuff this, I am going to reset it using recovery console. But the recovery console just hangs with the following on the screen:

I can ctrl+alt f2, and I just get a flashing cursor. So that's it then. My ubuntu box is hosed and I am about twenty minutes away from formatting and starting again. 6 months of schoolwork, designs for architectural competitions etc all gone.
When I try to load Ubuntu (recovery mode) or if I press Ctrl+Alt+F1, the image gets corrupted showing a white screen with black writing on it, but which is unreadable. Also the words seem to be spelled backwards. I'm trying to install an NVIDIA driver and I need to stop first the X server.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue with LVM on an external USB drive. When booting, the system drops into a recovery console if the external drive is not powered on because it cannot find the volume group and members. The setup is one system drive with fedora 12 installed, one internal data drive; LVM volume group vg1 with 5 partitions and one external backup drive LVM volume group vg2 with 5 partitions. Both the data drive and external backup are the same size and identical layout.
I use an rsync script that I wrote to execute backups (mirroring actually).
fstab is set 'noauto' on the external partitions.
I am new to LVM and I'm stumped as how to make the system 'ignore' the external drive at boot, if not powered on.
My dad has done something to his comp and it won't boot. it stops on boot up an comes up with some sort of black screen command line. he said its something along the lines of "initramfs" and he can't seem to do anything. We tried booting to the recovery console from the grub menu and gets the same response.
Hes having trouble booting to cd at the moment so I need to know is there some sort of command that will fix or at least give some help that he can type in from this spot.
I set the default login to recovery console on the login screen options. Now I am stuck at the recovery console and don't know how to change the settings on the terminal screen to get back to desktop.

I recently purchased a dell inspiron N4010 with windows 7 preloaded...i want to install fedora into it and i want keep it as my primary operasting system.... but what worries me is that the windows setup files is stored in a hidden recovery partion.... So if i install fedora will i lose this ??? if no will i will be able to install windows from that partion?

I can't check what mine looked like because this happened:I started up the windows 7 recover (another option under GRUB, on hd(0,3). 7 is on hd(0,1)) and it worked. I decided that i wanted to try something else before i restore my windows 7 partition to its factory state, so i exit the recovery thing. Next thing I know, my Ubuntu partition is completely gone, along with my grub.cfg files -.-
Partitions are like this in this order:
sda1: Windows 7 (can't boot into)
sda8: ubuntu (gets erased)
sda5: partition i'm going to use soon for another distro

oh, and by default, there was like 20 MB of free space in front of my windows partition (idk why asus did that) and when i shrunk my first partition (the windows one) it moved it all to the left -.- do you think something when wrong while doing that?
Two days ago I repartitioned my laptop HD and added the latest Ubuntu (2.6.35-25-generic) to the existing Vista and existing Ubuntu (2.6.32-28-generic via upgrades from 9.14(?)). Prior to this install it was using Grub with menu.lst from the old/upgrade Ubuntu. After the install the boot menu labels the partition with Vista as the Windows Recovery partition and the recovery partition item is no longer present.
At first I wondered how I could get Vista to boot. I found that SuperGrub cd would boot it OK. Then, it dawned on me that the boot menu item was not the recovery partition, but instead the Vista OS partition mislabelled . Vista loads just fine from it. The recovery partition is no longer listed as it was with Grub/menu.lst. SuperGrub will not boot the recovery partition, showing an error "missing BOOTMGR".

I edited boot/grub/grub.cfg so the boot menu item is labelled correctly, but suspect that it will revert back when there is an upgrade.
I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my girlfriend's lenovo using a live disc. First we tried it out to show her the wireless would work fine (her previous lenovo was not ubuntu friendly at all). She's interested in keeping her windows 7 partition along with the lenovo recovery partition, so I tried doing a dual boot install. I manually moved the cursors setting the disk space on each partition, and we allowed Ubuntu to do the rest. Much to my dismay, the installation failed.
I've done some reading over the internet, and I think in our case it would be best to use a Wubi installation. We're interested in using 10.04, so where can we find a wubi installer of Ubuntu 10.04?
Also, any ideas why the installation might have failed? The iso was downloaded off the ubuntu main site, and we burned it using infrarecorder.
I have a sony vaio netbook and installed ubuntu on it some months ago After some weeks windows 7 crashed and stopped booting I tried to recover it but still no success. When i bought it it had one partition only (plus the first one for windows recovery) When I installed ubuntu I partitioned my hard drive at my pleasure as you can see in attached image When I try to recover windows 7 it says it "can't find the windows partition or it's too small" Since 80 gb is not too small, i bet it can't recognized the partition anymore. Can anybody suggest a way to let it recognize my sda2 ? Does it have to have the "C:" label or "Windows something"? (I can only name it C without colons) Does it have to formatted FAT in a particular way ?

Lately Windows 7 has been causing me all kinds of grief and I decided that it would be better to just restore it back to factory settings. I have a Windows 7 recovery partition (hidden) that I can see from Ubuntu, however Grub2 does not detect it. It only has two identical Windows entries that take me into Windows (though in /boot/grub/grub.cfg they point to hd0,msdos1 and hd0,msdos2 respectively).
I have searched far and wide on the Internet on how to gain access to this recovery partition to no avail. I even found a link from Lenovo's website that details how to do this in the old version of Grub, though it doesn't work in Grub2.

I have already backed up all my data, so I can nuke the whole disk if that's what it takes, but I don't actually have a Windows Recovery CD, only the hidden partition which I can't seem to boot into.
I also saw some posts where people were having trouble disabling the recovery partitions from appearing in the Grub menu, their answers often consisted of people telling them that it's not possible to disable the recovery partition from appearing without hiding the main Windows Install, oh the irony!
What exactly I did here to aid in attempting to recover my Windows system. My laptop was dual Wubi-boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu, and after encountering issues booting into my Wubi Ubuntu, I went in to recover important files to do a reinstall. Using an Ubuntu livecd, I created a directory called "win" (sudo mkdir /win) and then mounted my Windows 7 partition (sudo mount /dev/sda1 /win) to that folder name. However, after encountering some issues there, I made the mistake of removing the "win" folder without unmounting the Windows 7 partition using "rm -rf /win". After that, my Windows system appears to be missing. Can anyone tell me what exactly I did? Did I delete the partition?

I think that the shred command mentioned there simply messed up my MBR, and maybe my partition table. Here's the partitions on my HDD:

My question is, is it safe to use something like SuperGrub to repair the MBR? I really don't want to mess up the Windows and recovery partitions. I've done plenty of research on this, but am not confident until someone says that it works in my case.
The other day one of my hard drives on my windows system decided to stop working. Not entirely sure what happened, but it seemed that it just erased its partition header, although I wasn't able to recover it.
Anyway, I successfully got an image of the drive using GNU_ddrescue (yay!), and I'm currently salvaging what CAN be salvaged with foremost.
way to get EVERYTHING off of the drive? I mean, it seems that it's all intact (since foremost is finding so much stuff).
I've tried mounting the partition, but it's not working. (I'd post the output from the terminal, but the forum thinks there is/are URL(s) in it....)
Im dual booting vista and ubuntu 10.10 when i start up i get the option to boot linux OR i can boot window recovery (loader) which works or i can choose windows xp which doesnt even work and im not sure why its there since i dont have xo installed and i never have on this pc. it doesnt say anything about vista anywhere.
My question is...is this a problem? it seems to work fine but i dont want to have problems later on.
On my Samsung netbook, I have successfully got a pretty speedy dual-boot of Windows 7 Starter and Ubuntu 10.10
I set up Burg, to well, replace Grub2 in favour of a more attractive interface and so far so good. I know that I can hide the older Ubuntu kernels/recovery slots by pressing the 'F'key. However, the Windows recovery partition still shows up. So it looks like this:
Ubuntu - Windows 7 - Windows Recovery (vista)
Basically, how can I hide the Windows Recovery partition? If I ever do need to use it, I can access it alternatively by pressing F4 at boot.
For some reason the fedora grub didnt detect my windows recovery partition (Im on a netbook).How would I go into adding that to grub. Its on /dev/sda2

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am new to knoppix. I actually have never used it. I was under the impression that I could change or recover my password on Windows Vista. I only have one user and it is the administrator. I am not exactly sure why it is no longer working. It is on a laptop and I have let others use it at times. don't know if someone may have changed when it was open at work or something. Every time I boot up and my user account comes up. I put in my password and it looks like it will log on but then comes back and says wrong password. I did see a way to do it with Windows 2000, and XP. Will that also work with Vista?

Anyway, I know how to use fdisk, and am comfortable installing on a disk without data I need to maintain.. but this new computer came with 5 (!) windows partitions. I don't know where to start.
I don't mind reinstalling windows after partitioning if I have to, but I really don't want to screw up the recovery partition. Any clues on where to start or what to look for? Or what NOT to do?
It looks like "my computer" has two partitions listed (c: and d: ). I guess I could just take note of the size of these two partitions, free up the partitions that match in fdisk, then repartition that space and install everything.
I need to reboot to do that, so I'll edit with the information when I have it.

I've got a, as it seems to me, strange problem.I've inadvertently deleted my user from the group admin so I'm in the same situation of a lot of other users (read a lot of messages about it).My problem is that when restarted in recovery mode there is no way I can choose the 'drop to the root shell' or similar in the menu.The menu appears for a second and then I've got an empty screen. If I press a key I've been requested for a username and password that of course is not what I need.
