When I try to shutdown or reboot from the system menu in Fedora 12, I am returned to the logon prompt. I am able to shutdown and reboot from a terminal window by issuing the shutdown command as the root user.

I try to use command, but behavior is same Whenever I try to shutdown the system, it exits from desktop environment and a white screen displays on screen. And nothing happened. View 2 Replies View RelatedBuilt new system and installed openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 with Gnome desktop about 6 weeks ago. Have never been able to get the system to shutdown or fully poweroff using the installed OS. If I use the Knoppix live CD - no problem. System boots up fine and shuts down and powers off correctly. With the installed OS, it originally crashed on shutdown and had to power off using the power button. After trying many things, the OS shuts down, powers off the fans etc, but the keyboard is still lit. I cannot restart the system without turning off power at the power supply. Starting my computer by turning off the power supply switch, waiting
10-12 seconds, turning on the power supply switch and then hitting the power button gets to be very annoying after a few weeks.
Installed KDE and switched to that to see what difference it might make. System does not shutdown, but reboots instead. Switched back to Gnome. Have tried sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now and poweroff. Identical behaviour. System is completely up-to-date. BIOS, kernel, video drivers.
How do you disable the "System Settings" from the shutdown menu?
View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu will randomly pop up the shutdown menu and then shutdown.It seems to happen when im in firefox and typing and it has been difficult to replicate. I dont think it is a temp issue since watch sensors shows temmp of 40-50C. Someimtes it happens every minute someimtes i can go 10min without it happening.

I have a workstation with Fedora 13. This workstation is used for very long remote processes. Recently it has been shutdown accidentally by a user and has caused the loss of some of these processes. As such, for precautionary reasons, I have decided to remove these options from all our workstations so that only the super user can initiate reboots or shutdowns.
In previous versions I was able to do this by using gdmsetup and unchecking the Show Action Menu option. This also added the SystemMenu=false flag under [greeter] in the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file. This was under RedHat EL5. However in Fedora 13 neither of these methods work. Gdmsetup no longer exists and adding that flag to the custom.conf file does not work. I rebooted after editting the file and the shutdown option still appears at login.
I have lost my ability in KDE Menus to do a shutdown or restart. My only option is to logoff or cancel. This started occurring about 2 weeks ago, possibly 2 KDE workspace updates ago. I have been assuming it would get fixed with an update but so far it has not.
I am running Fedora 10 x86_64, kernel = 2.6.27.7-134.fc10.x86_64, and the KDE version is:

I have 3 different systems all running the same OS and KDE versions and it is happening on all 3 systems. All systems have the "Offer Shutdown Options" selected in Session Manager. I have even turned this option off, rebooted, and then back on to try to jumpstart it but that did not work.
Additionally, I have tried deleting the contents of the /tmp directory while in single-user mode and also the .kde under my home directory. This made no difference.
Another symptom I am noticing is that any desktop widgets that I create all get moved to the upper left-hand corner of the display whenever I reboot and log back in. Any extra shortcut widgets that I add to the panel are also gone the next time I log in.
Again, these same symptoms are occurring on 3 different machines.
These symptom do not occur after a fresh install of FC 10. It is breaking during one of the yum updates but I have not narrowed it down yet as to which update is causing this to happen.
How do I add/delete modify the menu system on the Fedora Menu Bar, i.e. If I want to add a custom menu to the "Applications/Office" menu how do I do it?

For some reason in the last few days I can no longer logout of KDE, nor will it let me shutdown the system. The only way out is to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and then shutdown from there. Weird thing is other users can. For me the logout box just disappears and I carry on working or if effects are enabled, the screen blurs and I carry on working. After this the logout box doesn't come back up until I have restarted X (logged out).
I have tried disabling the desktop effects to no availe and I have looked in the messages / kdm logs. So far the only thing I can find is in KDM.log
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

I have no idea if this is at all relevant but there are several threads from Google relating to this and GDM, although no cures as far as I can tell.
I would rather not delete my ~/.kde folder again if at all possible as it takes ages to reset everything back to normal.
I currently run kernel 2.6.34.7-66.fc13.i686 (sort of). When I select from the Gnome menu System -> Shutdown and select Shutdown from the dialog, my system only logs out, presenting me with the greeting screen. While this is a minor problem and I rarely shutdown my machine, it is mildly disconcerting.I have dropped back to 2.6.34.7-63.fc13.i686 and that shutdowns properly using this method. (Also, 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686 works properly). I can imagine that it might close some security issue in which an unauthorized user is able to halt the entire machine. Especially if this is something that will continue in future releases of the kernel.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is a bit of an odd problem that's been happening to me recently. My home folder is a version of Fedora old, I've been using the same one between Fedora 11 and 12 (which I'm now using).
When booting up, I notice that my system fonts are not the ones I have manually set. They're the ugly version, whatever exact font it is. It's only when I select System->Appearances from the menu that the system seems to detect my seletions to use Liberation fonts in all areas, and then everything instantly switches to the more visually pleasing Liberation fonts. This is a strange bug, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can point me in the right direction?
Does fedora 12 have logout sound and wallpaper? I don't get a logout music and the logout screen is blank.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just installed F15 KDE Edition, and as the title tells, I need to keep pressing F2 and/or Enter to make the system go through the boot up process, otherwise it freezes as long as i keep it without my interference !! and then it takes relatively long time to start the GUI, and when I switch to the console (using ALT + CTRL + F3 for example) and try to write the login or the password, there seem to be some 'bouncing' effect, that if I'm to write the login 'root', I get something like 'rrooott' ... however, this doesn't happen in the GUI .....
I have a multiboot system, with Windows7 and Linux Mint (based on ubuntu 10.4) installed along side. While Windows7 doesn't have any problem with my hardware, Linux mint has also some issues that cause the performance of media players to degrade (sound and video tearing) and cause repeated freezes to some applications (a game actually, 'wesnoth') until I press a key or move the mouse.
I have AMD Athlon 7750 dual core 2.7 GHz system, with 3GB DDR2 800 Ram, and embedded ATI Radeon HD 3200 with about 512 shared memory.
one more thing, when I booted off the live image to run the install program, I booted into the video failsafe mode (not sure of the exact name, but I think you got it, no mode setting) and passed the option 'noapic', so I suppose this options are still passed whenever I boot mysystem, as I get the text version of the progress bar during startup, rather then the graphical fedora logo ( i.e no mode setting) ..
I have just made a clean installation of FC12. The only change I have made for now is to disable the NetworkManager and set a static ip address. My problem is that when I click "shutdown" it doesn't complete the shutdown and hangs due to some kind of kernel error. Then I have to use the power-switch to shut it down. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens often (every 3rd shutdown or so).

I have machine which I am using a server for all my office activities. We have fedora (11.0) installed in that system. When even power goes out system is getting shut-down abruptly. We have UPS for this system and some times UPS also runs out of power. Do we have any software, which monitors battery power and shutdown the system gracefully, when system knows that power is running out. I am using desktop machine, not a laptop. So I may some hardware like battery which runs fot sometime, even though there is no power. Then there will software which monitors and shut down the system gracfully.

When I try "shutdown -c", the system prompts "shutdown: cannot find pid of running shutdown."
So it seems every time I shutdown my PC and turn it on, the menu bar is missing. I can bring it back by running the following command in the terminal, but I would rather not have to do it all the time.

System was fine with :Ubuntu 9.04 (had also installed kde )then....I wanted to try some change to gdm so i downloaded gdm while building it , it asked "PAM" libraries to be installed so i installed PAM ... but ignored the instruction to reinstall SHADOW (library i guess..),Now :on booting system i get login menu but i am not able to login , it says some critical error occured

I am using fedora 13 .My kernel version is 2.6.33.6-147.fc13.i686.PAE . I installed vlc media player from the rpm fusion repository.I do have the problem with that.I am unable to load the menu bar in it . i find the following error.

Just the menu window disappears.I had adjusted the power button of my notebook to shut down the computer and this works now.

i miss having a shutdown button in the gnome main menu (not the menu bar). if you right click on the icon for gnome main menu and click "Edit Menus", it opens up alacarte and you can add/edit/delete menu items.i want to add the shutdown menu item. so, i click "Add Item". my question is, what is the command to open the shutdown window? the application that asks you if you want to shutdown or restart?

When you select shutdown, and then hit yest to confirm, nothing happens. I looked at the logs and nothing seems to be generating any errors either. Not even sure how to trouble shoot this issue.
