May 3, 2011I recently switched to the Ubuntu 10.10 version from the 8.04 version, and when I looked for the Drive and Volume tabs in the USB Properties dialog, they were no longer available. In 8.04, I used the Volume tab to set the mount point and file system for selected CompactFlash drives connected to the computer through a USB adapter. It is important that these selected drives be mounted as msdos rather than vfat because of the characteristics of the legacy system that they are used with.
how do I get the functionality I had in 8.04 under the Drive and Volume tabs of the device properties dialog?

Aug 20, 2010is it possible to change the boot order of hard drives? I`ve got two 250gb sata hard drives on my pc and i can`t figure how to change the boot order without physically switching the data cables inside the case.I`ve been into the bios and it won`t let me switch the order there.
In one of harddrive I've installed UBUNTU 8.0.4 and other having UBUNTU 10.4. I am assuming I need to change grub/menu.lst file, but I am not sure exact syntex.

Apr 16, 2011Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.
All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.

After using "Find and Replace" to search for and select text, the default pale blue used since 3.1 does not stand out clearly against a white background. This is particularly problematic for short search strings and for search targets found in the Table of Contents (blue text on grey background).
According to Robert Tucker in the OOo Forum thread "On Gnome on Fedora the background of selected text can definitely be changed at System>Preferences>Appearance, Theme Tab, Customize button, Selected items button". I cannot find any equivalent in Xfce; can it be done?

Aug 7, 2010I have 2 HDD one of 1 TB and other of 250 GB on my Desktop, on my 250 HDD I installed Windows 7 and have tried creating a Dual boot but my System boots to Windows without giving me Booting options to Windows or Ubuntu, if I manually select the booting option by hitting the F8 Key shows me list of H/w to boot from, I select the 250 GB HDD and system now boots to Ubuntu, both OS works fine no issues but the glitch is why do I have to do this everytime when booting to Ubuntu.
I also tried clean installing Ubuntu after having removed the Windows 7 but the same problem, cannot boot unless the HDD is selected.
At the time of installation I also noticed that Ubuntu will not detect the Windows OS which was already there before installing Ubuntu, whereas I tried with the same disc on different laptop computer and it worked just fine, it detected windows 7 loader and gives the booting option.
I just want to know is it because of 2 HDD installed on my Desktop.

May 1, 2011I've used it once before but got fed up with the boot asking me everytime I turned my laptop on because I wasn't using it enough. I have Windows 7 on drive C . I want to keep it on drive C. I have several 1.5TB+ drives, and one of them is not being used. I want to dedicate it to Ubuntu, and be able to do a dual boot with my Windows 7 install. Is this possible? If it is, what about when this drive is not connected to my laptop? Will that mess up the boot process?

Dec 21, 2010I have the same problem with an Ubuntu 10.04 live CD. Whenever I attempt to boot (Lu|U)buntu from a live CD/USB, on most computers. it works just fine. However, on two computers, the live media starts off just fine with the main menu (Try Ubuntu without installing, etc.), then, when I select any option except 'Boot from First Hard Disk', after a few seconds, the CD stops spinning or the USB loses power. I'm convinced it's not a problem from the media, since it works perfectly fine on some computers.

Fedora :: Multi Boot Error 21 - Selected Disk Does Not Exist
Nov 19, 2010Currently I'm running 3 operating systems on my machine (in order of installation); Windows XP, Windows 7 and Fedora 14. Unfortunately, after I installed Fedora I'm no longer able to boot Windows 7/XP. When I select the "Other" option in the Grub menu, I get the following error:

Dec 10, 2010recently sent up another computer as follows:Two sata drives. Windows 7 was installed on the first drive(sda)and booted successfully. This drive was disconnected ( I have had some installs where Unbuntu wipes out the existing C drive eventhough I am installing to D) and Ubuntu was installed to the second drive (sdb). At one point I had to rebuild the grup on the Ubuntu drive and was careful to make it installed on the Ubuntu drive. To my surprise when the PC booted up I saw the Grub menu with a menu entry for Windows. The Windows drive was always the primary drive before the Ubuntu install. I was planning on the Windows drive being the boot drive and using a boot manager to determine where to go from there. If I utilize the BIOS boot option (F12) I can boot each drive individually. I cannot in BIOS set a particular drive to boot - just a hard drive. Everything is working I am just curious why the primary drive does not boot first. IN BIOS the Windows drive is a primary SATA with a lower number that the Ubuntu drive which is listed as a secondary drive.

Jul 11, 2010I have a web site all set up, and running great, I have my SSL set up and active. I have 3 drives in this Linux box, 2 are RAID, and 1 is a 1.5tTB drive. On this 1.5TB drive is just one folder. with lots of Sub folders, and Files. I need to do 2 things here.
#1 I need to change ownership of the main Folder on the 1.5TB drive, so I need to know how to access the drive from a Terminal.
#2 I need to know how I set the drive up in a configuration file to access that drive and the one folder. This configuration file just shows where the folder is located.

Sep 24, 2010Basically I have changed the default mount names for my windows partitions in Ubuntu. They were /media/data, /media/data_,/media/system reserved, etc
They are now /media/C,D,E,F
I have rebooted etc after the changes and when I look in Gnome places or in Nautilis the OLD names still show up.
HOWEVER when I run Nautilis as the root user all the CORRECT NEW names appear.
ALSO - if I create a BRAND NEW user account and login as that all the OLD names show up?
So this is something to do with ROOT access or whatever that is not allowing the names to be updated somehow?!?!?
As I use these disks in windows (obviously) I DONT want to change their labels. and basically this SHOULDN'T be the solution everyone is suggesting!
Root can generate the new names automatically based on the mount point in FSTAB why can't other users - and HOW to do do it MANUALLY?

Dec 4, 2010I'm not sure what to make of this. I have setup an Ubuntu 10.10 server with two software raids.md0 is a four disk raid5 - 3TBmd1 is a two disk mirror - 300GBI think I have a drive failing (and am going to replace it regardless, but I have to take an outage), what appears to happen is it comes on-line with one id (/dev/sda) then something happens AFTER the rebuild completes and the drive changes to another id (in this case /dev/sdh) and puts the array in a failed state.Is this some sort of protection mechanism to prevent degradation to the array? When setting this up, presumably before the disk started to fail, Ids seemed to jump from reboot to reboot and caused me all kinds of issues.Also, neither device appears to return info after the change.

Apr 10, 2011any way to change file permissions of NTFS drives? All my C programming files resides in a NTFS drive and I need to set execute permision on them in order to run. I tired chmod -Rv 777 /media/Programming. and also tired chmod 775 *.* after entering the folder in which all my files resides. but both these commands doesn't seem to have any effect on the files. I know NTFS doesn't use Unix file system and chmod command goes in vain.

Mar 29, 2009I have a vista machine I recently put FC10 on. Through the course of figuring out wireless drivers, I goofed it enough that I was told to simply reinstall linux. I had the fedora GRUB file set as I wanted. But after I re-installed FC10 it would just hang after it searched for bootable CDs and stuff. I got the super grub CD and am able to boot into windows no issue. HOWEVER, when I select the fedora option, I get
"Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition"
I assume this means the grub doesn't know where my Linux boot stuff is. I have a separate drive dedicated to the linux install. The Vista drive is where the MBR is. So... how do I tell the grub where the FC10 install is? I've tried to reinstall FC10 twice hoping I just goofed something. edit: The standard grub file was in /boot/grub or something. Is there a file I can edit to point in the right direction?
Fedora Installation :: 13 Boot Up Fail Error 17 "cannot Mount Selected Partition"?
May 28, 2010When upgrading F12 to F13 I had a fatal error when I selected to update grub so I opted to do a fresh install of grub and the upgrade proceeded without any further problems. When I went to boot the system (dual-boot with Win 7) grub gave me error 17 "cannot mount selected partition". So I booted into rescue from the install disk thinking that maybe reinstalling grub might help, but when I ran "grub-install /dev/sda" I got the message that "/dev/sda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive" (I have Windows on SATA 1 sda and Fedora on SATA 2 sdb). I exited rescue mode rebooted entered BIOS and swapped the drive order and restarted. Success!... Well almost. The progress bar goes all the way across the screen to the point the login screen should come up then it hangs...

Aug 10, 2010I have a Centos 5.5 system with 2* 250 gig sata physical drives, sda and sdb. Each drive has a linux raid boot partition and a Linux raid LVM partition. Both pairs of partitions are set up with raid 1 mirroring. I want to add more data capacity - and I propose to add a second pair of physical drives - this time 1.5 terabyte drives presumably sdc and sdd. I assume I can just plug in the new hardware - reboot the system and set up the new partitions, raid arrays and LVMs on the live system. My first question:
1) Is there any danger - that adding these drives to arbitrary sata ports on the motherboard will cause the re-enumeration of the "sdx" series in such a way that the system will get confused about where to find the existing raid components and/or the boot or root file-systems? If anyone can point me to a tutorial on how the enumeration of the "sdx" sequence works and how the system finds the raid arrays and root file-system at boot time
2) I intend to use the majority of the new raid array as an LVM "Data Volume" to isolate "data" from "system" files for backup and maintenance purposes. Is there any merit in creating "alternate" boot partitions and "alternate" root file-systems on the new drives so that the system can be backed up there periodically? The intent here is to boot from the newer partition in the event of a corruption or other failure of the current boot or root file-system. If this is a good idea - how would the system know where to find the root file-system if the original one gets corrupted. i.e. At boot time - how does the system know what root file-system to use and where to find it?
3) If I create new LVM /raid partitions on the new drives - should the new LVM be part of the same "volgroup" - or would it be better to make it a separate "volgroup"? What are the issues to consider in making that decision?
Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Change BIOS Settings Due To Which Can"t Change Boot Preference?
Mar 24, 2011I currently have a Windows XP OS which i want to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 . I put the disk in the drive and chose the option to install Linux through Windows. But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. Ubuntu :: WUBI Won't Boot; Drives Don't Appear In /dev
Jul 27, 2010I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with Windows XP, installed from the live CD via WUBI. I believe that GRUB is 1.97~.
Everyting was working just fine until after applying some of the upgrades in the upgrade manager; now Ubuntu will not boot. Instead, it starts up the GRUB console with an error message saying that it can't find the kernel.
If you type ls, you see the following:

(loop0) (hd0) (hd0,1)
(loop0) is the Ubuntu loopback drive, (hd0,1) is the Windows drive (the real hard drive) and they are intact. I am able to set the root to (loop0) and you can see the files. But the hard drive and the loopback drive do not appear in /dev, so you can't mount them. To be precise, there are no devices beginning with "sd" listed in /dev.
I am able to boot the computer from the live CD, which automatically mounts the hard drive; from the live CD, I can mount the loopback drive thus.

So they are not broken.
How can I make the drives appear in /dev when booting from GRUB?
(BTW, Windows XP broke during an upgrade a month ago, and it won't boot, either. I will try to fix that now that I have saved my files from the computer through Ubuntu.)

Jul 22, 2011I have ubuntu 11.04 installed on a 80gb hard drive and everything was running fine. I then installed a second drive (1gb) for storage. It worked fine after a reboot but now it won't boot. I'm pretty sure it's just confused as to which drive is the boot drive. I'm not sure as to how to fix it in GRUB2.
