View 1 Repliesi have recently setup and installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a virtulal drive usingVMWare 6.04, installed the desktop gui as well, I need to add other drives for data and loggng, which I did in the VMWare side. I can see the 2 drives in ubuntu, but can not access them, I get he unable to mount location when I try. How can resolve this please as I need these to virtual drives to be used as data drives.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI suspect this is not new but I just can't find where it was treated. Maybe someone can give me a good lead.I just want to prevent certain users from accessing CD/DVD drives and all external drives. They should be able to mount their home directories and move around within the OS but they shouldn't be able to move data away from the PC. Any Clues?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 500gig SATA drive and a 320gig IDE drive installed in an HP a6700y/9150e 1.8GHz Quad, 4 gig ram... The Fedora installer only sees the 500g SATA drive, and not the 320g IDE drive where I want to install Fedora. Now I know that I can't always get what I want, but in this case I am not willing to mess with the working Vista installation just to get Fedora installed.
Vista BTW sees the 320 just fine. I am clueless as to where to begin with this. I gave up in Fedora with my Celeron based machine because of speed issues.... But this new box should have more than enough horsepower to run F!
OK, I obviously did something wrong, but I dont think I did because i checked my kickstart file after installing.
When i do a df -h it shows that drives i set to 4096MB and 6144MB when I just installed the server, are showing as 3.9GB and 5.9GB respectively.
This is my first Linux install, does it not do the # x 1024 for partition sizes?
I have a dual boot with vista on disk 0 and ubuntu on disk1. I just installed a disk 2 that I would like to use to try out other distros. Ubuntu is the only linux experience I have had. I'm really not very good at all of this, so my questions before I start loading another distro are:
1. Does Fedora use GRUB as its installer?
2. When I installed ubuntu on disk 1 (sdb1), the install was very simple. I chose sdb1 for the install, it loaded it, and when it was done I simply had the choice of which drive to boot into. Will installing Fedora on disk 2 (sdc1) be just as simple, or will I encounter steps I must take to make it so that I have a choice of which disk/OS to boot into?
I am attempting to install F11 from full media onto Abit IP35 Pro m/b connected to two (unitilized) Seagate 300GB SATA drives (7200.9) and attempting to create a software RAID1 setup as I have in FC8. I am using the graphical setup (as I have in other releases.) However, the ONLY "drive" shown when creating a RAID partion is /dev/mapper/nvidia_jhhdfjhf with free space of 286165 MB. There is not /dev/sda0, /dev/sda1 drives that I would have expected to see.
NOTE: All BIOS options for SATA are set to "IDE", not RAID or AHCI. The Seagate Seatools software sees both SATA drives and all tests are successful. What now? It seems like this is a major step backwards from F10. It does not seem mere mortals can install with RAID1 on this motherboard.
I have Fedora 14 installed on my main internal drive. I have one Fedora 14 and one Fedora 15 installed on two separate USB drives. When I boot into any of these drives, I can't access any of the other hard drives from the other drivesll I can, but just the boot partitions. Is there any way of mounting the other partitions so I can access the information?---------- Post added at 12:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:34 AM ----------I guess even an explanation on why I can't view them would be good too.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI now have a triple boot on triple drives with Vista on sda, Ubuntu on sdb, and PCLinuxOS on sdc. When I installed PCLinuxOS on sdc, I installed the bootloader in the first sector of partition 1 of sdc so that I could keep using the Grub bootloader that installed with Ubuntu.Everything is working fine at the moment.I now want install Fedora 10 on sdc for experimentation. I have used gparted to create another partition on sdc to install Fedora 10, so my question is 'What and where exactly should I put in the /boot/grub/menu.lst of my original bootloader to get to Fedora?'

"The Fedora disc was not found in any of your CDROM drives ...."
I read a couple of the threads on the problem and it seemed people were shooting in the dark for answers. Two issues mentioned were SCSI and DMA problems. If I go into the bios and disable the DMA or SCSI driver, and then I re-enable them after installing Fedora, will Fedora see the DMA or SCSI? Or will the fact that they were disables during installation keep Fedora from recognizing them later?
First time linux user, am trying to install a fresh full install of Fedora 12 dvd i686 version. I have two identical sata drives, which fedora fails to identify. Have reset the bios, changed settings in the bios, still not finding them. I have an asus av8-x motherboard, with a athlon dual core processer.

The Fedora installer won't display my two SATA hard drives. I've tried both the x86_64 live CD and DVD. On the live CD, fdisk -l displayed nothing. However, if I click "Specialized Storage Devices" a devices shows up as "BIOS RAID set (stripe)" with a capacity equal to both my hard drives. I don't even have RAID enabled in BIOS - it is set to AHCI. Other os installers display the hard drive correctly.

I installed fedora on one of my three hard drives and it seems that something went wrong with the other two. Fedora recognizes the other drives but it seems the data on those drives is not there anymore. The below images are screen shots from my computer folder and disk utility program. I tried to look through Fedora documentation but I did not find a solution to my case.

#1 I need to change ownership of the main Folder on the 1.5TB drive, so I need to know how to access the drive from a Terminal.
#2 I need to know how I set the drive up in a configuration file to access that drive and the one folder. This configuration file just shows where the folder is located.
There is a FC4 Server with A8V-MX mobo currently running 2x WD500 SATA drives in RAID1 with a third WD500 SATA drive for data backup. This machine has been running 24/7 since January 2007.The plan is to replace the WD500s with WD 2TB SATA II drives in a similar setup as above. i.e. 2 drives in RAID1 and the third drive for data backup.Definitely looking to do a clean Fedora 14 install on the 2TB but have some questions.
1. Will Fedora 14 detect the VT8251 connected SATA drives?
2. If not, how do I get drivers so it will? (I have the mobo CD with makedisk, but prob for windows)
I already have the 14 x86-64 DVD ready to go, but I am not yet at the site.the BIOS settings are: SATA, RAID or AHCI.
How can I change the selected drives to boot from. I want to set my windows drive first so I don't have to select it each time.
I have ubuntu 10.04.
I made 2 partitions from one hard drive but my drive is getting too full so I want to change to one again.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure what to make of this. I have setup an Ubuntu 10.10 server with two software raids.md0 is a four disk raid5 - 3TBmd1 is a two disk mirror - 300GBI think I have a drive failing (and am going to replace it regardless, but I have to take an outage), what appears to happen is it comes on-line with one id (/dev/sda) then something happens AFTER the rebuild completes and the drive changes to another id (in this case /dev/sdh) and puts the array in a failed state. Is this some sort of protection mechanism to prevent degradation to the array? When setting this up, presumably before the disk started to fail, Ids seemed to jump from reboot to reboot and caused me all kinds of issues. Also, neither device appears to return info after the change.

My System Intel Core Duo E5300 Mobo - Gigabyte G31M-ES2L 1GB DDR2 800MHz RAM 4 x WD20EARS HDD I have been trying to install Fedora or Ubuntu for over a week. I thought it would take an hour and i would be away. I have been trying to install using the mdadm Software RAID feature. Everytime it takes about a day to format the drives and then i get an installation error. The drives state they are ready to use as is on any operating system other then WinXP, but this does not appear to be the case.
I am very new to Fedora... I have been doing some reading.[URL].. That information has been promising. I have been able to get into Fdisk off the live CD but i can't figure out how or if it is possible to do what i want it to.
Has anyone had any luck getting these drives to function correctly in a software RAID? I have had good luck with WD drives in the past and just assumed these drives would do what i wanted to but alas i have been proven wrong.
The partitions i wanted was...
- A 2GB swap parition
- A 10 GB RAID 1 partition for Fedora
- The remaining space as a Raid 5 for files.
Am i just banging my head against a wall here, or is this possible.
is their any way to change the mounting location of your hard drives so when you click a certain hard drive in nautilus, it'll go to that location instead of the default one?

I`ve got two 250gb sata hard drives on my pc and i can`t figure how to change the boot order without physically switching the data cables inside the case.I`ve been into the bios and it won`t let me switch the order there.
In one of harddrive I've installed UBUNTU 8.0.4 and other having UBUNTU 10.4. I am assuming I need to change grub/menu.lst file, but I am not sure exact syntex.
any way to change file permissions of NTFS drives? All my C programming files resides in a NTFS drive and I need to set execute permision on them in order to run. I tired chmod -Rv 777 /media/Programming. and also tired chmod 775 *.* after entering the folder in which all my files resides. but both these commands doesn't seem to have any effect on the files. I know NTFS doesn't use Unix file system and chmod command goes in vain.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi'm tying to dual boot Vista64 (already installed) and Fedora 10 x86_64. I am running a Dell XPS 410 running 2 sata hard drives raid 0 (ICH8DH). I started the process by shrinking my C drive on disk0 leaving 64.45GB of unallocated space. Next I rebooted into Fedora install DVD and when i get to blue graphical install screen i get message asking if my drive is GPT and if it is it may be corrupted. I click NO, and it comes up with a message telling me i have to initialize my drive if i want to use it ( have to click NO twice) and if i do it i will lose all my data.
i can click no and keep proceding through the install until i get to the partition setup screen. No hard drives or partitions are shown. I've tried googling the problem and get bits of pieces of information scattered in different parts but nothing conclusive to my problem i think. As far as my background of knowledge goes, I'm new to the linux community but give me a thorough guide and i'll do fine (i hope). I've been using fedora on a separate laptop for 2 days now .
I currently have a clean installation of Windows on the Primary drive (13gbs) and I want to install Fedora 11 on the other (7gbs). Should I install grub on the Windows hard drive or will Windows hate on me for that? Earlier I tried installing grub on the slave with the Fedora system, but I had trouble configuring Grub in a way that it would understand and I ended up messing up the MBRs of both hard drives.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been battering with FC10 and software RAID for a while now, and hopefully I will have a full working system soon. Basically, I tried using the F10 live CD to setup Software RAID 1 between 1 hard drives for redundancy (I know its not hardware raid but budget is tight) with the following table;
[Code]....
I set these up by using the RAID button on the partition section of the install except swap, which I set-up using the New partition button, created 1 swap partition on each hard drive that didn't take part in RAID. Almost every time I tried to do this install, it halted due to an error with one of the raid partitions and exited the installer. I actually managed it once, in about...ooo 10-15 times of trying but I broke it. After getting very frustrated I decided to build it using just 3 partitions
[Code]....
I left the rest un-touched. This worked fine after completing the install and setting up grub, reboot in to the install. I then installed gparted and cut the drive up further to finish my table on both hard drives. I then used mdadm --create...etc to create my RAID partitions. So I now have

I would like to install Fedora 11 on an ASUS P5L-VM 1394 motherboard with a 3 GHz Pentium 4 CPU. This is an LGA775 socket mobo with a Intel 945G chipset. Two SATA hard drives are plugged into SATA ports. An IDE DVD drive is plugged into the IDE/ATA port. Using the 32 bit Fedora 11 installation disk, I have seen two cases:
1) No hard drive recognized. When i get to the disk configuration screen, there are no options to choose from.
2) By monkeying around with the BIOS settings or switching the SATA ports the disks are connected to, I can get an alternative mode in which no drivers are found for the DVD drive either.
Currently, a version of Ubuntu is installed. UPDATE: The board was purchased in a P3-PH4C barebones, which for unknown reasons requires a different BIOS issue than the regular P5L-VM 1394. Updating to the most recent BIOS does not resolve the problem. One the installation procedure fails to recognize the hard drives, going into a shell and examining the boot up log shows that the kernel recognized both hard drives. So it's down to why the installation procedure is not recognizing them.
Fedora is having trouble identifying a raid partition, it sees them as separate drives. I got drivers from dell, but during a Fedora dvd install, it mentions nothing about a place to install extra drivers.
When it says it must "initialize" the drives, Fedora then breaks the dell bios raid. How to either install the dell drivers or make Fedora see the raid partition as one?
I'm using openSUSE 11.2, with some eSATA hard drives. For some reason, they're set to read-only, and I can't change it. I set parameters in fstab as fmask=113,dmask=002,umask=0002,rw Oddly, I was able to delete a file in there, but my samba users have read-only access, and I can't use chown or chmod: I get no error message, but nothing happens.
View 6 Replies View RelatedBasically I have changed the default mount names for my windows partitions in Ubuntu. They were /media/data, /media/data_,/media/system reserved, etc
They are now /media/C,D,E,F
I have rebooted etc after the changes and when I look in Gnome places or in Nautilis the OLD names still show up.
HOWEVER when I run Nautilis as the root user all the CORRECT NEW names appear.
ALSO - if I create a BRAND NEW user account and login as that all the OLD names show up?
So this is something to do with ROOT access or whatever that is not allowing the names to be updated somehow?!?!?
As I use these disks in windows (obviously) I DONT want to change their labels. and basically this SHOULDN'T be the solution everyone is suggesting!
Root can generate the new names automatically based on the mount point in FSTAB why can't other users - and HOW to do do it MANUALLY?
