Ubuntu :: Artifacts Left On Desktop After Switching To Awm Then Back To Gnome
Aug 13, 2010I recently tried out the awm version of the desktop environment. When I switched back to the Gnome desktop, I found a couple of titlebar-like artifacts left on the desktop.I did some experimenting, using System Monitor and the Kill xxxx command and managed to rid myself of one of the artifacts. The remaining artifact can be taken care of by using kill xxxx comand for the gtk-window-decorator but, this basically renders window buttons useless after the command is issued.
I think I had a couple applications running at startup in Gnome desktop before I switched to awm, and they didn't start at startup when I returned to Gnome desktop, but the titlebar-like artifacts did.Is there a way to reset the state of the gtk-window-decorator in a manner that is less destructive, and which allows my desktop to be clear of this artifact?
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Microphone Works Only After Switching To Another Input Setting And Back
May 7, 2010since 9.10.My microphone works, BUT only after I open the 'Sound Preferences' panel, and change the setting under the 'Connector' tab to another selection (any will do), then set it back to 'Microphone 1'.Since this works, I wondered if there is a way to make this happen automatically at every login?

Jul 15, 2010I'm new to the forum and actually to Debian as well. Have been running Ubuntu for the past few years. Just setup a small Dell laptop to use as a Squeezebox and Print server. It's been up 6 days without a hitch as far as serving music to the squeezebox and printing. The problem is that it loses it's static IP, so as long as I look it up and change the radio Squeezebox and printer definitions around on the clients everything keeps working.
Does anyone have any ideas?If the connection drops for some reason and the system has to re-initialize the connection, shouldn't it use the /etc/network/interfaces file and get back to the static IP that it is configured for?If anyone has any ideas of why this could be happening or have a solution, I would really appreciate the help.

Feb 17, 2011I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed. I am very new to Linux. I am having a problem connecting to wireless network when I reboot to Vista OS. When I am using Ubuntu, it works fine. I have to plug in the LAN cable in order to connect to internet. When I try to connect to wireless network, I don't see any networks at all. My WiFi switch is ON. Jun 23, 2011I looked at the /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf file it says something completely diff than the iwconfig. iwconfig is saying there is no wireless extensions on lo and eth1 but on eth0 all my info is there now on the conf file it says and ip address on eth2 and nothing on eth 0, or 1. does anybody know why it keeps jumping back and forth? one week its eth0 and maybe 2 months from now its eth1.

Jan 28, 2010I want to report a bug I recently found to devs.
I found that when switching to any TTY and then back to the graphic mode a rectangle of about 5cm long x 1 and 1/2cm tall appears in the right-down corner of the screen, filled with trashed vram data.
I did a screen capture but the thing didn't appear - opposed as ghost would! xDD But the fact is I can see it, no matter I go full screen and then back to normal, no matter I switch again to any TTY and then back to TTY7, it sit's there until I reboot: closing the session and starting a new one don't work either, the box is still there.
I'm running Koala 9.10 amd64 on a QuadCore 8400 and ATI 5750HD video card with drivers provided by Ubuntu itself, not the ones that came with the graphic card CD neither the ones available to download from ATI's website.
I'm running Emerald and Compiz, too.

Jul 29, 2011After updates installed today, Fedora 15 shut down hangs with the following: 1272,2981621 Panic occurred- switching back to text console. The Caps Lock light flashes and I have to manually shut down the computer. As an aside, I am notified of 65 more updates but, I cannot install them. I'd really like to keep using Fedora.

So in Ubuntu I could enable desktop effects and simply use my metacity themes.
In Sabayon, when I enable Compiz, it changes my window theme manager to Emerald. I want to use metacity, not Emerald. They kept telling me it wasn't possible when I used Compiz effects and Metacity together all the time.

My ubuntu programs and files appear in xubuntu and run normally. However, when I change the theme, the metacity window frame remains the same. How do I change it? Mar 10, 2011My workstation has a Nvidia Quadra FX550 graphics card which affects compiz in a very bad way; movies is often just black screened, Blender runs extremely slow etc. Switching to Metacity makes the computer much more robust without any glitches.
I would gladly move to Metacity if not for a big BUT; the annotation tool in Compiz which I use all the time. Not having that makes me a handicapped animator.
So, is there some sceen annotate tool that works in Metacity?

Nov 21, 2010I would like to be able to use compizconfig-settings-manager to set some custom settings for compiz, and then have compiz be the window manager that runs when I log in. The trouble is that I cannot seem to find a good way to have compiz run at log in. I can add "compiz --replace" to my startup programs list, but this loads metacity and then replacing it with compiz and seem to add a bit to the startup time (not to mention it seems to be slightly unreliable).
Further, I tried this: Uninstalled compizconfig-settings manager. In appearance preferences, set visual effects to normal. Everything seems to work fine until I log in again, at which point no window manager runs. Setting visual effects to none makes metacity load.

Apr 30, 2010I've just upgraded Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 on my eeePC. Everything seems to be fine so far except one thing: metacity does not want to start automatically, so I have to run metacity --replace each time after login.
I've removed Compiz installed previously and set window manager to /usr/bin/metacity using gconf-editor, but still Ubuntu starts without window manager running. As a workaround I've enabled session state saving, so metacity now starts together with my other applications, however I would like to find a prettier solution.

In doing some looking around, I am certain that with a LOT of work, I could port the Windowblinds theme into GNOME, using some image editing and file movement. But is it really necessary?

Dec 27, 2010After installing UNR, I found the unity interface to be lacking advanced features, support on forums and tweaks. So I installed the ubuntu desktop, but I kept maximus (and tweaked the list of apps which shouldn't be maximized, so I am pretty happy with maximus). Since netbooks aren't as fast, I wanted to get a more lightweight desktop environment. I started with replacing Metacity with Openbox (since it seems to be quite popular). I noticed that after logging in my memory usage was 186 MB and 189 MB after running ubuntu tweak, for both window managers. If Openbox would be as lightweight as it claims to be I find it rather strange that I don't notice any difference in memory usage. (about my "test": I changed the default window manager using ubuntu tweak, logged out and logged back in to start a new session, opened system monitor to measure memory usage)
