View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu 10.10 in a VM and went to change my desktop to something less boring and brown. I see in the desktop wallpaper program that there are certain photos that are in clusters (like you can click the photo and the next photo will come up and so forth). If I set my desktop to this cluster of sorts will it show me the photos sequentially or will it just stick to the first one. If not, is there a way to show this cluster sequentially in my background where it would change say, every minute or so?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed 9.10, and the "File Manager" seems to not be working. I cant get ubuntu to display a background picture on the desktop, and anything I put on the desktop is not selectable. If I try to access anything under the "Places" tab, it tries to open a window, which read "opening whatever" but nothing happens. I can access files via terminal just fine.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running FC13, and suddenly, when I try to connect a camera for picture download, the desktop icon that would otherwise open the camera's memory directory opens a network directory instead. Seems the inode is munged and misdirecting.
If I go
cd .gvfs
ls -i
I get
2 gphoto2 mount on usb%3A002,005 an inode of 2? gphoto2 is broken too, but I'm not as worried about that.
2 question for starters:
#1 Can you change many icons at once? (I want to resize 8 icons at once to same size).
#2 what do I change to single click to choose items (not double click) ?
Now I know this is an Ubuntu forum, but my question is really for Linux distros in general. An obvious newbie to linux, I was just wondering if I could change the default desktop environment that comes with distros: for example Ubuntu comes with GNOME. There is a way to change that to something like, for example, xfce or Openbox right? Or are these environments set for each distro?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running 11.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1500 series laptop. I updated my computer yesterday, and now my desktop theme is different. In 10.04, changing the theme was easy, just go to appearance settings and choose. For some reason, when I go to appearance and select a theme now, the only options I get are customize and install, neither of which do anything to help me change my theme. The install button takes me to my home directory...presumably to pick a theme file. But I can't find any themes in my home directory.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Lucid machine that is driving me bonkers by constantly locking the desktop screen, forcing me to enter my password each time to unlock it. I have looked everywhere but cannot find out where to change this setting.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI hate the purple "Show Desktop Icon" in Lucid and I finally figured out how to change it:
1) sudo apt-get install wmctrl
2) Create the following script and proceed as directed within the script's comments:
#!/bin/sh
# GLD's Show Desktop Button script. Here's how to do it.
# sudo apt-get install wmctrl
# Right click on the panel and select "Add To Panel".
# Choose "Custom Application Launcher".
# Use the file name of this script for the Command.
# Use whatever icon that you want. The generic Ubuntu Show_Desktop_Button icon is located here:
# /usr/share/gnome/help/user-guide/C/figures/show_desktop_button.png
if [ -f /tmp/toggle_show_desktop_$USER ]thenwmctrl -k off
rm /tmp/toggle_show_desktop_$USER elsewmctrl -k on
touch /tmp/toggle_show_desktop_$USERfi
This is about Lubuntu 10.04 and not Ubuntu 10.04.I have a few shortcuts on my desktop with images that doesn't look so good, not sure why and if it's possibly to configure it.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a 10.4 Remix on a 7" eeepc. It has to be the coolest desktop ever.
Just installed a 10.10 Beta on a PC, and wonder what I have to do in order to convert the stock desktop (Gnome?) into a "remix" type desktop with all those cool icons and menu organization.
The install of 10.10 Beta "just worked". Great!
