View 9 RepliesThere is a problem that I'm experiencing, and that is that the link to Documents and the link to Pictures is missing from the Places menu, and I don't know how to put them back.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy latest problem: (Ubuntu 10.04)My "pictures" folder is missing from the "Places" menu. It used to be there....I didn't do anything...but now it's gone. I liked having it there- I can access that folder through "home folder" but it was nice having it where I could get to it with just one click. How can I get it back? (There is no option to edit the places menu in the "edit menus" thingie)
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have 11.04 installed, Gnome 2.32.0 - life has been good until I responded as normal to the update manager this morning. Upon reboot noticed my main menu, system menu and places menu are gone. Other icons and stuff like power button remain on the top toolbar but again, no menus.Googling around I found solutions that were years old and/or did not work for me (like installing XFCE - which did nothing).
View 6 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.10 I would like to access the partitions of my hard drive from the Places menu. They show up there, but when I click them, the menu just closes. I can access them by navigating Places>Computer>"Drive_Name" but it would be more convenient. I was able to access them before, but something has apparently changed..
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've just re-installed 11.04 and noticed that my RAID array does not appear as an entry under "Places". In the previous installation, and in the LiveCD boot (which I'm using now), it appeared as en entry which I could click on to mount. In Disk Utility (and Gparted I think - not 100% sure) I can see both hard drives, and I can see the SIL controller that they come under, but I'm just not getting the array showing up in "Places", and the array checks out OK in BIOS. Using the Live CD, the array appears as an entry in /dev/mapper but when using the main installation all I can see in this location is "control".

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble locating my second hard disk on my fresh Ubuntu 10.4 install.
It's a terabyte drive that I cannot seem to find in Ubuntu. It's formatted in NTFS and is over 90% full of data.
If I boot into Windows 7 the drive appears fine and the data is all there and Windows disk scan doesn't report any problems.
The drive: WDC WD10EADS-00L5B1 ATA Device (as listed on Windows 7)
Disk 1 (According to Windows 7)
Here is my fstab, fdisk and uname:
As you can see from the above, my other drive is detected fine (the one with the Windows installation and Ubuntu installation on it)
On a side not, I don't have a floppy drive installed, so I'm not sure why fd0 is listed (perhaps it's irrelevant - I'm new to the Linux world so I wouldn't know)
By default my "Places " menu contains some entries like
- Floppy menu
- Desktop
- Computer
How can I get (permanently) rid of these entries ? How can I rename "Home Folder" to "Home" ?
I recently copied about 14gb from my external hard drive to my Windows 7 partition on my hard drive (from Ubuntu) I know where I put it, but I turned my laptop on today, and I can't find the files from either operating system, but the space is still missing.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn a fresh install my 320GB computer shows a 317GB 'File System' a 'Swap Capacity of 3.1GB and 'Free Space' 273.8GB !

How do I get access to the remaining 43GB ..less whatever elbow room Linux needs to utilise which is not 43 GB !
I've managed to get a hold of a 160GB drive, which I hope to use as my system drive for a server that I'm setting up. This may be the tip of the iceberg (as it tends to be with me for some reason), but this is what's happening:
I got the drive, which has been used before but has been secure erased, and it's been sea tool-ed so is therefore as good as new. It shows up fine in the BIOS, and GParted discovers it straight away. I then split it into 3 partitions:
A ~10GB system partition - sdd1
A ~130GB storage partition - sdd2
A ~4GB swap partition - sdd3
GParted performs all actions straight away with no issues.
After partitioning, fdisk -l reports the following:
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x2bd2c32a
[Code]....
I've then gone to install Ubuntu. I go through all the major steps, up to where it asks you where you want to install Ubuntu... at which point sdd just doesn't show up at all. It shows sda, sdb and sdc fine, but sdd is nowhere to be seen.
Two things strike me as odd (although I suppose understandable) - Firstly, every partition in sdd mounts fine, but is owned by root. Secondly, each partition has a folder called 'lost+found' with varying amounts of data. There's 662.3MB in the 10GB partition's lost+found folder, and 6.9GB in the 130GB's folder.
I have a remote headless server of which I have an SSH connection to. I have 2 identical usb drives for this fileserver for backup.I have automated cron and rsync running the backups at 2AM each day. Each day the girl in the office removes the drive and plugs in the other one and then takes the backup from the office home each night is case of disaster.
This has all worked fine for a while until a recent update. The server is not mounting any of the usb drives when plugged. I will attach some logs. dmesg is listing the device SDC connecting when it is plugged in. The other two devices SDA and SDB are fixed disks in the server. The following dmesg outputs are from a rebbot. I cannot plug in/out the disk at the moment. The server is remote.

I have an external harddrive of 500GB. It's almost fully loaded with TV series and movies. Nautilus says there's 60 GB remaining space. I just downloaded some movies, and copied it to this external hard drive. And here's the strange part, after I did this I only see a very small subset of all the movies I stored on that harddrive in nautilus. With 500 GB almost full, you can imagine there are quite some movies on it, but I only see 12 of them in nautilus.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am completely new to Ubuntu/Linux and am having trouble getting my DVD-ROM drive to work. I've tested a few things, and it seems that if there is a CD in it when I boot, then it works fine, but if there is nothing in it then Ubuntu won't list the device. The DVD-ROM is master on a PATA cable and the CD-RW is slave (yes I know it's getting old now...) Drives worked fine under Windows XP. I don't know very much about the boot process, but the following from kern.log seemed relevant: Booting with a CD:

This is not a huge deal but I have missing hard drive space, I re-sized an iso with k9copy I then used mv to move it to the other iso like so:
Code: mv this.iso that.iso which moved and renamed it, however I did not get any drive space back by effectively "deleting" the first iso. So my question is do I have an unnamed iso file floating around that cannot be deleted?
I am keen to start using Ubuntu and have installed it on one of 4 partitions on my new 1 TB external HD. I got to the reboot stage where I was expecting a new boot screen where I could decide to use either XP or Ubuntu. But there is no mention of Ubuntu just XP and the volume I installed Ubuntu on has disappeared. I can find the other 3 volumes on My Computer.

I have been using g4l to do cold backups of my OS partitions for a LONG time. I finally decided to configure a boot USB flash drive instead of a CD for this purpose. Using the EXCELLENT instructions on this page [URL] I configured a Lexar 1 GB Firefly drive and have used it for some time. When a newer version of g4l came out I decided to build another boot flash drive using a Verbatim 1GB drive. I followed the same instructions and...
The Verbatim flash drive will boot my Dell Studio XPS and my Dell Latitude 2100 netbook. It will NOT boot either of my Dell Dimension 4600s. The Dimension 4600s respond with a message "Missing operating system" when I try to boot from the Verbatim drive. The Firefly works on all machines and I configured Kingston 1GB and 2GB Data Travelers which also work on all machines.
Rebooted my server after some funky stuff started happening with mysql. Turns out the drive that stores the mysql databases has gone missing. I did an fdisk, and the partition table is gone. I used gpart to see if there were any partitions available & there were -- two + one swap. Can you help me put this back together I know very little about reconstructing a table to use... Here is the output of what I've talked about...
b14:~# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 164.6 GB, 164696555520 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 20023 cylinders

I just partitioned and installed slack on a 1TB hard drive. I then run KDiskFree under KDE, and saw that I am missing about 300Gig! Is it just a simple thing between bytes and bits like MS. Or is this an issue I can not ignore? I have 3 partitions. One is my swap, one is ext4(slackware is on) the last is a jfs partition.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install OpenSUSE on an external usb drive but when I boot from USB, all I get is a message saying "Missing Operating System". I've tried different ways of partitioning the drive either by letting OpenSUSE do it automatically or doing it myself. It's just a basic partitioning scheme, with swap on one partition sdb2 and the rest on root sdb1 .
I made sure to have GRUB be installed on the root partition of sdb (usb drive) instead of in the MBR (I've installed Fedora and Ubuntu on usb drives this way).
I just installed ubuntu 11.04 last night. I noticed most of my effects were missing so I tried to put them back on. This didn't work so I disabled the effects. Then, my panel at the top and the Launcher is missing. .How do I get these back?
