View 2 RepliesI just updated to 10.10 and now when I go to places and try to open my documents, etc, nothing happens. I have files there and can access them with open office. Is this fixable or is it the way 10.10 works?
View 3 Replies View RelatedThere are measures to stop this in Windows even though there are still things you can't get rid of. Now on to my question, Why can't I edit the Places menu but I can edit the Applications and System menus. I really want to get rid of the Recent Documents menu header. I don't like things like that right up on front street. I am quite a stickler about privacy and one of the reasons I decided to try out linux is because I heard it was better in the sense of respecting privacy. But now I am seeing that you don't even have the ability to get rid of a tracking item such as Recent Documents. Quite disappointing.
I can understand tracking recent changes to the system but it is not necessary to track what you open or what you browse on the internet. Hence Firfox's ability to not store history and the clear cache, history, etc. on shutdown of Firefox. So Am I misinformed about the fact that linux does respect privacy? What kind of world are we coming to that it is necessary to track everything. Especially here in the U.S., I mean I'm thinking 1984 here lol. Anyway, how to remove these tracking features in Fedora. I mean in the sense of just stopping it. It sucks to have to go through and "clear" everything that tracks you every time you want to log off or shut down.
My latest problem: (Ubuntu 10.04)My "pictures" folder is missing from the "Places" menu. It used to be there....I didn't do anything...but now it's gone. I liked having it there- I can access that folder through "home folder" but it was nice having it where I could get to it with just one click. How can I get it back? (There is no option to edit the places menu in the "edit menus" thingie)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was trying out bash scripts to see how to mount NetGear readyshare. I can do so using Nautilus and selecting Network but I wanted to be able to do so from a script. I don't know how it happened but when I clicked on Places/Documents it opened a terminal instead of Nautilus. This applies to all the folders in the Places menu but I can still get Nautilus by clicking Places/Computer and below.
I'm using ubuntu 10.4, nautilus 2.30.1
When I try to access my personal folder Music by clicking Places>Music I get the Appearance Manager instead, actually if I click on Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, or Downloads the only thing that appears is the Appearance Manager. I cannot find out why this is happening it happened before and I reinstalled Ubuntu, now it has happened again is there any other way to access those folders besides through Places.

I have two Xubuntu machines. On one I upgraded in place, no problem. But the other got messed up so I just installed Xubuntu 11.04 from scratch. I like the new Xubuntu, including changes they've made with this version, but...on the fresh install, the Places menu is missing (see attached).
Places is one really neat feature that my distro had the Windows doesn't; it makes/made life easier for me--I hate to see it just go away. Does anyone know how to bring it back? It doesn't seem to be available under Add New Items (to the panel).
Yesterday I have saved an important folder in the ".-Trash-1000" --a folder in my mobile hard disk drive.I then encrypt the important folder in windows xp(click the left button of the mouse , choose " attribute" ,then "Advanced",then "Encrypting File") .When I open the ".Trash-1000"the next day in ubuntu,it is empty.I am douptful of it so I open the winxp system, the ".Trash-1000" folder is also empty.I have two operating systems--win XP and Ubuntu. Is the ".Trash-1000" emptyed everyday?Or is it because of the encryption ?Then how can I get my documents back?

View 5 Replies View RelatedSomething very strange has happened to my system (Lucid / Gnome / 64 bit): when I try to open a location from Gnome Menu, message pops up saying: "Can't open location [file:///...]. No program is registered to open this type of file." Or something in this vein, I'm translating the message from Polish. So I can't open locations via the main menu, but the bookmarks work fine in an open Nautilus window. It looks like the system doesn't know it should open a location with Nautilus... I looked through file associations in Ubuntu Tweak, but couldn't find anything corresponding to "file:///..." or anything resembling opening a location (I'm not exactly a Linux guru). Also, the folder shortcuts in Cairo-Dock don't work, the same goes for the FolderView screenlets. However, in the MainMenu screenlet, the location shortcuts do work. There has to be some obvious explanation of this anomaly, but I lack a deeper knowledge of the system to work it out. I can't say at which point it started exactly, I think it was around the time I started dragging extra shortcuts to the Cairo-Dock shortcuts applet, but that may be a coincidence.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI see this posted in several places in the past but no answers. If I use UUID in fstab to mount additional partitions I get duplicate entries for the partitions in the Places Menu. I can solve the problem by mounting the partitions by Label ( /dev/sdb2 /mountpoint ) but half of the time grub2 will not mount the drive correctly using this method and will change the volume ID (sdb2 becomes sdf2) .
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 11.04 installed, Gnome 2.32.0 - life has been good until I responded as normal to the update manager this morning. Upon reboot noticed my main menu, system menu and places menu are gone. Other icons and stuff like power button remain on the top toolbar but again, no menus.Googling around I found solutions that were years old and/or did not work for me (like installing XFCE - which did nothing).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm keeping my documents, music, and videos etc. on a separate partition from my home directory, formatted with encrypted fat32 so that I can access it from both my windows and my ubuntu installation. So I've made the folders, transferred the files, and I selected custom icons (by right-click, properties, click on custom icon, then select the file from /usr/share/icons/Humanity/places/4.
So far so good. The problem is that the custom icons don't appear in the Places sidebar in Nautilus or the main Places menu in gnome. It just comes up as a regular folder.
See a screenshot of it here.
Does anyone have an idea/workaround so that I can use my custom icons in the Places menu as well? I have tried it with scalable icons, with no difference. I've also tried looking for a configuration file which might have the details in, but I haven't found it - I suppose this probably has something to do with how the Places menu is automatically generated.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala with Gnome.
How can I add Home Folder launcher available in the Places menu to the panel?
