Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To The Higher Versions(9.10 - 10.04) The System Failed To Boot

Oct 20, 2010

i used to use ubuntu 9.04 on my lap compaq 515, it worked well. But on upgrading to the higher versions(9.10, 10.04) the system failed to boot. Whenever i tried to install, the laptop would freeze and just show a blank screen. The Configuration of my system is below

Processor-AMD Athlon X2 64-bit
RAM- 1.7Gb
HDD- 150Gb
Graphics Card-ATI Radeon 3200 HD Graphics (256MB)

Is the problem actually with the operating system?. Does the new versions of ubuntu support this configuration or not?

Ubuntu Installation :: After Upgrading 10.04 To 10.10 System Doesn't Boot (only Blinking Cursor)

Feb 1, 2011

I tried to upgrade to Maverick (server version) usingsudo do-release-upgradeAll went well, but on the first reboot after the installation the PC hangs with grub prompt:error: the symbol grub_xputs not foundI guess it has something to do with my RAID1 setup:sda1/sdb1..RAID1, bootable (system partition, 20 GB)sdc1 ....swap partition sda2/sdb2/sdc2 ... RAID5 (data partition, 3 TB)I made a bootable (using UNetbootin) USB pen drive with 10.10 desktop on it and booted into this desktop version. Aftermdadm --assemble --scanI could successfully access (and mount) my RAID1 and RAID5 drives. However, the system itself does not boot.

after only having mounted /dev/md0 and browsed in the contents, the boot behavior has changed: now the PC does not end up in the grub prompt "the symbol grub_xputs not found", but instead a blank black screen with a blinking cursor left top is shown. Keyboard: no reaction (I tried Enter, Esc, any keys ... no reaction, just a blinking cursor). Then, I tried:

boot into USB pen drive 10.10 desktop
mdadm --assemble --scan ... result: /dev/md0 is available (the RAID1 of sda1 and sdb1)
mount /dev/md0 /mnt/md0

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed Mac Mini 10.04 Triple Boot On OS X / XP System

Sep 19, 2010

I have a Mac Mini with OS X that I had dual booted successfully with Windows XP for my family. I am a rookie at all this but learned a lot Googling sites that walked me through things. I got bold and tried to triple boot the Mac Mini with Ubuntu 10.04 using rEfIt. I was following this website. [URL].

MISTAKE #1
All was done to the letter until I accidentally realized I had clicked install on step 8 before I clicked "Advanced" to check off the "Install Boot Loader" and changing the device to the partition I had made for Ubuntu (/dev/sda3/). It finished installing and rebooted with the rEFIt screen with Mac / Ubuntu /Windows icons. Mac started, but both Windows and Ubuntu showed a black screen with blinking underscore in the top left of the screen. I went back to the Mac OS and in Disk Utility I noticed that the Linux-Ubuntu name on the partition I had made changed to "DiskOS3".

Mistake #2
I panicked and used "Erase" in Disk Utility on that partition using the Zero Out Data security Erase option.

Mistake #3
Then I reinstalled the Ubuntu 10.04 cd into the drive and did the install boot loader steps. It started up but the rEFIt screen now has Mac/ two Ubuntu penguins/ and Windows icons. Mac starts and works, but both ubuntu icons and Windows leads to the black screen with blincking underscore cursor.

Here are specs and data for hard drive below:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: Mac Mini
Model Identifier: Mac Mini3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To New Versions Of Ubuntu?

Feb 5, 2010

I'm an Ubuntu newbie and recently decided to install it as the OS for my netbook. I believe that new releases of Ubuntu come out every six months or so and I'm curious as to how easy it is to upgrade. As a long time Windows user I'm used to "Clean install = the way to go" when it comes to updated releases, I'd like to know if this philosophy holds true in Ubuntu.

Assuming it does, and clean installs are preferred I'd like to know how much of a headache installing a clean new release is, and how much data I'll lose. For instance will I need to reinstall all of my applications as I would with Windows? Will I need to completely re-customize the OS, starting from scratch? I installed Ubuntu keeping partition separate from the rest to store data (music, movies, etc.), I'm assuming that I can leave that untouched when reinstalling?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To 10.04 Failed?

May 22, 2010

I went to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and it wouldn't upgrade. This is the error:

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

This can be caused by:

* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

I looked for the same errors on here and on the Internet and these were some solutions, but they did not work (I included the errors form the solutions)

1. I tried in the terminal to apt-get clean, sudo apt-get -f install and this is what I got:

E: Could not open lock file /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (13: Permission denied)

Ubuntu :: LTS 10.4 Versus Upgrading To Newer Versions

Nov 2, 2010

currently my laptops is running 10.10 I haven't been having any problems so far nor I felt any improvement (functionality wise) over 10.4 . But today I came across a small problem: I went to Cilenerra's website - a Powerful video editing software. I saw that they have a version for 10.4 but not for 10.10 yet. Now I'm unable to get that software.

1. My question is, will I be encountering this type incompatibility issues in the future if I keep getting the latest Ubuntu distros?

2. What if I choose to install 10.4 LTS and stick with it long term? Will I start getting incompatibility issues after a year or so?

3. Will the 10.4 get more and more stable and responsive with newer updates until the new LTS?

EDIT: and if you're wondering, I tried installing the repository of Cinelerra, but the Ubuntu Software Centre kept telling me that there's no version available for my OS.

I'm anticipating several issues, first Grub, can I get it going again after the Win7 upgrade without messing with my current Ubuntu install? the next issue is Win7 will want to make a "boot" partition, does this create any problem with partition names for Ubuntu? can this be solved by making the windows "primary" partition and using an extended partition inside that? is there anything I'm missing?

General :: Windows XP Failed To Boot In Dual Boot System?

Jul 5, 2011

The problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To 10.04 - Broken System?

Jun 19, 2010

I avoided upgrading to 10.04 when it was initially released because I couldn't afford for anything to go wrong with my computer around exam time. Sure enough, when I decided to upgrade today, the process got about halfway through and then gave me an error and left me with an unbootable system except in a recovery terminal.

In this terminal I discovered that most of the packages the upgrade wanted to configure depended in some way on shared-mime-info or desktop-file-utils. Configuring these with dpkg --configure gives me an error along the lines of:

Code:
undefined symbol: g_malloc0_n and an error code of 127. So, dpkg leaves those packages and consequently can't configure many of the subsequent packages in the dist-upgrade.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 8.04 To 10.4 LTS - System Stuck

Apr 7, 2011

I got a really bad virus on my main computer and decided I should just install Ubuntu like I previously had installed on a laptop. Anyway, I used an old 7.10 install disk that I usually use and I upgraded from 7.10 to 8.4 LTS (that went off without a hitch), but when I upgraded from 8.4 LTS to 10.4LTS the install hung up at one point. The system was stuck 7 minutes from completion trying to set up the rsyslog. I left the dialog box up for 3 hours to no avail. I proceeded to reformat the drive to try again and it ended the same way. I currently have the system with the install dialog up and stopped at the setting up of the rsyslog.
Here is a picture of the install window:

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 9.10 To 10.04 - System No Longer Boots

Feb 10, 2010

After upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 my System no longer boots. I had a Dual-Boot System. On Boot I get - "error : the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found grub rescue> (prompt):

If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/ext2.mod' (I get 'The symbol 'grub_xasprinf' not found)
If I run ls /boot (The Kernel File Names look Ok)

If I run in Rescue Mode it Reports (The installer could not find any partitions, so you will not be able to mount a root file system. This may be caused by the Kernel failing to detect your hard disk drive or failing to read the partition table, or the disk may be unpartitioned. If you wish, you may investigate this from a shell in the installer environment.) I ran the recommended reporting script and got the following output:-

Code:

Ubuntu Installation :: Stick With LTS Versus Renewal Of System By Upgrading

Jan 22, 2010

I am wondering, what are the merits of staying with an LTS release versus the renewal of the system by upgrading to a new release? Certainly, staying with an LTS release isn't going to be more or less dangerous than upgrading to a new release that specifically addresses security issues. With Lucid Lynx coming up this spring, should I try sticking it out until the LTS after Lynx, or keep upgrading regularly?

Ubuntu Installation :: PC Won't Boot After Upgrading From 9.04 To 9.10

Mar 25, 2010

I wanted to use Ubuntu on one of my old laptops (a great, speedy modern OS on a modest hardware PC). Unfortunately this PC can not at the time read all CD-ROM's (can't figure out why it does read some) and I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 - the only CD it did read at the time.

I've used it for two years but I never got my wireless card to work (OK, most of the time it was collecting dust) A couple of days ago I finally realized how to use ndiswrapper (lol...) and I was able to get a working Wi-Fi connection on this laptop. I then proceeded to upgrade it over the internet, to Ubuntu 8.04, then 8.10, then 9.04 and, last night, to 9.10.It has worked through each and every of these updates, but after 9.10 the PC won't even boot (after "GRUB loading...).

Ubuntu Installation :: "Failed To Add The CD" When Upgrading To 8.10?

Mar 10, 2010

I have an old 8.04.02 installation that I would like to upgrade to 9.10. I'm trying to use the incremental upgrade path: 8.04 -> 8.10 -> 9.04 -> 9.10. Unfortunately, that computer can't use the internet for some reason, so I have to use the alternate CD. (A partition with a fresh 9.10 installation can use the internet just fine, but I want to carry over everything from the 8.04 installation into 9.10 -- and finally use the internet again). I tried following the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IntrepidUpgrades . I inserted the disc and went through the automatic upgrade dialogs. After clicking "No" on the "Include latest updates from the Internet?" dialog box, the upgrade starts then instantly returns this error message:

Failed to add the CD.There was a error adding the CD, the upgrade will abort. Please report this as a bug if this is a valid Ubuntu CD.The error message was:'Unable to locate any package files, perhaps this is not an Ubuntu disc or the wrong architecture?'I get the same thing if I try this on the command line: gksu "sh /media/cdrom/cdromupgrade"I checked the architecture. My computer uses amd64 and the alternate CD is for amd64.I got the disc image fromso I think it's a valid Ubuntu CD.PS: Also posted as a bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/534240 I'm just hoping someone has either experience or a workaround that can get me on my feet again.
