View 9 RepliesI have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode.That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.

I don't know the first command to type in the Linux command line and from what I have read their is a GUI interface you can install but it's not recommended for security purposes. My question is can you install the GUI to setup the server and then uninstall it when your done and is there any downside to this approach?

Everything is great and I am very impressed with Linux (first time). I now want to try Ubuntu but cannot find how to unistall GRUB and then SUSE, (or do I just reformat D and install Ubuntu?)

Ok, i do that, but the next reboot, the tty doesnt work (black screen) and i cant access runlevel 3 correctly and i cant install propietary driver. I have looked this in google and i didnt find nothing, so i ask here.
i wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

I've been a long time Windows user, but I've started a small firm and because of lack of funds, I've decided to install Ubuntu on my company's PCs.I have 8 PCs in total - 6 of them with Intel CPUs, and the last two with AMD CPUs. I bought the extra two computers because I've managed to find an extra two people to work at my company, and AMD-based PCs are cheaper so I've decided to buy them instead of Intel.Long-story short, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and boot time takes about half-an-hour. After the computers finally boot, USB hardware doesn't work at all. I was forced to buy PS/2 keyboards & mice and they both work fine after the PCs boot.I don't know what's causing this delay.I've enabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS.I've tried several instructions like editing the /etc/modules file.I've installed cpufreqd, tried to configure it, but it didn't work.I've check the CPU stats and my CPUs are running at 800MHz. I can't believe nobody managed to fix the 800MHz problem as I've noticed it's quite common among AMD Ubuntu users. I think I've tried almost anything that I've found on this forum.I can't keep asking my employees not to reboot their PCs. Both Chrome/Firefox crash a lot on Ubuntu so they're forced to restart their computers.The computer specs are: AMD Athlon II X2 240 dual-core @ 2.800MHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.

Added an SSD (dev/sdc) and decided to move some less often changed directories there. Started with /usr and /boot, leaving / on a primary in the first drive, for now. All started ok, and my changed fstab mounted the right ones, and the system works.
However, grub is actually using the original /boot on / on sda1. I cannot see any way to change this. (Which makes it sorta hard to update the kernel

Okay, since it has two choices, I tried to tell it which one to use. But, grub> root (hd2,5) does nothing.
Disk /dev/sda:
what I seem to recall, grub doesn't care about the boot flag on the disk. Nor does it care about primary vs. logical (except GNU doc says "makeactive" only works on a primary?).
The GNU doc also indicates that it looks for a directory /boot on the partition, so if you're mounting a partition as /boot, it also needs to contain a /boot directory under it. Tried that, but no change.
Is my problem the logical partition? Does that prevent "grub> root" from changing it? I'm afraid to wipe out the old /boot and find that I can't start up.

I made some changes to the disk configuration, involving the addition of a dmraid-controllable fakeRAID card (SiL 3124 I think) and creating a RAID 0 array out of the two drives connected to the motherboard itself (Intel ICH7R). Otherwise the machine's configuration is identical to the way it was when running F10. My problem is thus: when I boot from the installation DVD (64-bit), the boot process doesn't make it even to anaconda. Here is the error I get, right after md devices are autoconfigured:

Some days ago I had Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04, obtained by upgrading from 9.10, installed on dual boot (same HD).
However, I had some issues with Ubuntu's boot: after its selection in GRUB, the login panel would not display and the screen would remain black.
I was told that upgrading might lead to problems, so I uninstalled Ubuntu 10.04 and installed it by CD.
Now I have Windows Vista and Ubuntu 10.04 (this time the CD-installed version) on dual boot, but Ubuntu after 4-5 uses doesn't boot anymore!I've also tried to boot in recovery mode, but that was no use(the recovery panel does not show up).
When "sudo apt-get upgrade" said packages have been kept back, used "sudo aptitude dist-upgrade."Obtained grub prompt on restart; purged and reinstalled grub using the chroot method. This has become customarily necessary after certain system-wide changes (see my other threads) but I still don't know why. But it's not the main subject of this thread.On restart obtained message saying kernel and fallback failed to load. Restarted and used shift to select 2.6.35-25 (3rd on the list) to load.I inferred that 2.6.35-28 is at fault since the recent upgrade mentioned kernel generic.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 64-Bit. sometimes when i boot the computer, right after the grub loads, a black screen is displayed. It just says my computer's name and "tty1".It lets me enter my username and password. The system takes my password but the black screen remains.For some reason the word "ubuntu" with the loading bar does not appear like it is supposed to in this case. The system does not boot into my destop like it should.
This usually happens 1/4 times when i boot so i didnt pay much attention and would just restart the computer. However just 5 minutes ago i had to boot my computer 12 times to get it to boot into the desktop.
After I upgraded from 9.10, I restarted and waited. ubuntu boot screen froze after a little bit, and the my caplock and scrolllock started flashing (I believe this is the kernel panicking) Then I tried safe mode and it did the same thing when is was saying something about sensors. So I then went to grub and started it with an old kernel and it booted fine (without the splash screen though) what should I do?
EDIT: ok the kernel version it is not working with is version 2.6.32-21 and it does work in 2.6.31-21. Also, it now doesn't say anything about sensors. It panics after App-armor loads ans skips Firefox's profile (or something like that)
I've recently made clean install to Lucid, and now Boot splash doesn't appear at start up. Only black screen appears and after that login window comes. However, boot-splash appears at shut-down and also in LiveCD.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot setup with two hard drives. Windows 7 is running on my primary drive with Ubuntu 10.04 on the secondary drive. I installed GRUB 2 to the secondary hard drive, and I'm booting from that. Everything seems to be working well with one problem. Every time I shut down from Ubuntu and tell it to load Windows (it doesn't matter if it's a reboot or power off/on), Windows locks up during its boot. If I power the laptop off and back on, I can select and load into Windows just fine. It just takes two attempts EVERY time.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded and burned the 32-bit desktop edition of Lucid Lynx (ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso) but can't boot it on my MacBook model 5,2. I've installed rEFIt. When I boot from the CD holding down the C key on hearing the boot chime, Ubuntu doesn't boot. A purple background with a keyboard and the accessibility icon shows up, then the screen goes black with a blinking underscore at the top left corner. After a little while, the marker disappears and the screen goes black. After that, nothing happens. I left my MacBook that way for a couple of minutes, but still nothing happened. Any clues about what the problem may be? Should I wait longer at the black screen? I burned the CD at low speed (16x) and verified the disc after burning.
