Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Doesn't Complete Boot ?

Aug 23, 2010

Some days ago I had Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04, obtained by upgrading from 9.10, installed on dual boot (same HD).

However, I had some issues with Ubuntu's boot: after its selection in GRUB, the login panel would not display and the screen would remain black.

I was told that upgrading might lead to problems, so I uninstalled Ubuntu 10.04 and installed it by CD.

Now I have Windows Vista and Ubuntu 10.04 (this time the CD-installed version) on dual boot, but Ubuntu after 4-5 uses doesn't boot anymore!I've also tried to boot in recovery mode, but that was no use(the recovery panel does not show up).

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Doesn't Complete Boot Up....makes Me Use Startx

Jul 3, 2011

I must have deleted a file or done something wrong because now when I start ubuntu11.04, my startup stalls at the blackscreen where it lists the output of current operations. Mine seems to stall at checking pulseaduio or stall at checking cron. I am not totally certain of the phrases but anyway, my only way to log in is to ctrl+alt F1 and sign in that way followed by startx. I copied some exact info down and here is where my computer usually stalls:

Screen says, Starting CUPS printing spooler/server [ok]
Checking battery state... [ok]
Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [ok]

This is the usual stopping stop for my computer.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Desktop On 10.04+ Doesn't Complete?

May 24, 2011

I had 11.04 installed, and I was having a weird problem when going into the Classic Gnome desktop, since I don't like the new Unity desktop. The problem I was having was that Gnome would start, but it wouldn't complete. Only one panel would come up, but not the main panel where all of the main controls are. I wasn't having any problems getting into Unity, but of course I don't like using it. So I tried a hail-mary and reinstalled to an older version of Ubuntu. I went all of the way back to 9.04, since that also includes the Grub-legacy as the default. I then upgraded through the stages from 9.04 to 9.10, and then got to 10.04. Once I got into 10.04, I had the same problem that I was having while using Gnome under 11.04, which is that the desktop didn't complete coming up. It seems to happen only in one user account (mine), but it's not happening in another user account (wife's). But I'm the sys admin, so I need to get my desktop working more than she does!

I'm wondering if after upgrading to 11.04 and Unity, it left something nasty behind in the my local configuration. I use a separate /home filesystem, so it remains intact after any system reinstall. I can't get even get the "Failsafe Gnome" option to work. The only thing that seems to work is a simple old Xterm.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Causes Complete System Freeze; Ctrl+Alt+Fx Doesn't Respond?

May 29, 2011

All of these freezes happen either while I'm in Nautilus or I'm opening Nautilus. The usual Ctrl+Alt+Fx (x being one to six) to get into the backstage does not work. If I have some music open then it would start looping the last couple of seconds. Now generally I would go check the logs, but I see no nautilus logs so what should I check? This is all pretty recent. I think that this started to happen when one day exim4 (and some packages all marked exim) got updated but I cannot be certain. Major playing-around after that would be some Wine issues but the system froze once before all that Wine fun.So step one, what should I check?

EDIT: OK, .xsession-errors ouput:
Code:
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Not Booting / LiveCD Doesn't Boot / Grub Recovery Mode Doesn't Boot

Jan 4, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process. With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything

A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode. That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.

Ubuntu Servers :: Migrating From LVM To Normal Partitions - Boot Not Complete

Feb 20, 2010

I have an Ubuntu 9.10/64 Server configured with LVM in a 1Tb sata disk in my home server. For a simple server, LVM adds complexity if you need to recover your system, so I decided to migrate from LVM to normal partitions. I have another 1Tb disk to copy my system disk. In the backup disk, i have created same size partitions and trasfered files from /boot and root volumes with rsync, presenving perms etc... and excluding /dev /proc /sys etc... I have then modified /etc/fstab to mount new UUID's and reinstaled grub via live CD and chroot.

At this point, when I replace my system disk with backup one, the boot process start as usual, but when it starts loading services the boot process does not continue. The system is not "frozen". If I press intro, there is a line feed on screen. If I mount the backup disk in another system, there is nothing writed to /var/log/syslog or dmesg files during the boot process. I can change terminal with <alt>F2 but there is no login. In console, with backup disk I get:

Code:

Ubuntu Installation :: What Exactly To Delete In The Boot File To Complete Uninstallation

Mar 27, 2010

Uninstalled wubi (though I enjoyed Ubuntu I want to do a clean install instead of the wubi/windows piggy-back). However, I still get an option to choose ubuntu when rebooting. I know that there's something I need to delete in the boot.ini file, but all I read is "delete mentions of ubuntu" or "delete the ubuntu line".

I hope I'm understandably wary of just waltzing into the boot file and deleting something like this, so what exactly do I delete from the boot.ini file to complete the uninstallation?

This is what I have in the boot file:

Code:

So all I delete is the "C:wubildr" line? Or does all that do is remove the mention of ubuntu from the startup menu but I still need to choose XP as the OS I want to boot into during startup?

Ubuntu :: Machine Will Come To A Complete Stop About Half Way Into The Boot Process

Aug 11, 2010

I'm having small boot issue with my present Linux box, which is presently running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. When booting from a Live CD, Ubuntu 9.xx+ or any other linux variant I have, the machine will come to a complete stop about half way into the boot process. I think this may have something to do with the WiFi card that I have installed. Are there any suggestions that could help me remedy this problem short of removing the card itself?

Ubuntu Installation :: Complete Lockup During Boot From Encrypted Volume

Aug 1, 2011

I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a Fujitsu Esprimo E900. During installation, I've used the guided encryption setting because neither GRUB nor LILO would ever install on the LVM configurations I created myself. So after installing Ubuntu 11.04, when I boot regularly, the computer freezes completely. When I try to launch the recovery mode kernel, I get this far and then the computer locks up, too. Ubuntu lockup during boot by germanium, on Flickr

You can see the label is sdb5_crypt which is a bit odd since the partition is on /dev/sda. However, I already tried changing grub.cfg to /dev/sda instead of /dev/sdb but that didn't do anything. This is all a bit odd to be. The funny thing is I've been trying to set this computer up for a month and I'm a professional programmer (Java, JavaScript, Groovy) with 20 years of programming experience and I never thought Ubuntu would be this hard to install on a more-or-less stock Intel box.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Doesn't See Windows 7 - Doesn't Appear In Boot Menu

I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

Debian Hardware :: Complete Hardware Failure - Black Screen Before Boot

Mar 5, 2010

No wonder my network-career is not getting in the mood... always other trouble.

Thing is: reboot and ended with a black screen: "no video available". i hit the reboot button. same result. I just, today, added a new DVD/Read-Write, so i have assumed thats the problem. Unplugged it: same problem. Nothing, not even the BIOS-display.

As i once started a PC without keyboard connected i did remember that that doesn't work (if i recall correct it gave me some beeps, today nothing like a beep). I replaced the keyboard and could boot.

But i don't trust this result. If someone might give an experienced opinion i would be very glad (i got several pc's, but this one is the only one which is really usuable, though its still a 200€ one, but it does all i need).

Ubuntu :: Very Slow Boot Time On AMD 30m / USB Hardware Doesn't Work After Computer Boot?

Mar 21, 2011

I've been a long time Windows user, but I've started a small firm and because of lack of funds, I've decided to install Ubuntu on my company's PCs.I have 8 PCs in total - 6 of them with Intel CPUs, and the last two with AMD CPUs. I bought the extra two computers because I've managed to find an extra two people to work at my company, and AMD-based PCs are cheaper so I've decided to buy them instead of Intel.Long-story short, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and boot time takes about half-an-hour. After the computers finally boot, USB hardware doesn't work at all. I was forced to buy PS/2 keyboards & mice and they both work fine after the PCs boot.I don't know what's causing this delay.I've enabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS.I've tried several instructions like editing the /etc/modules file.I've installed cpufreqd, tried to configure it, but it didn't work.I've check the CPU stats and my CPUs are running at 800MHz. I can't believe nobody managed to fix the 800MHz problem as I've noticed it's quite common among AMD Ubuntu users. I think I've tried almost anything that I've found on this forum.I can't keep asking my employees not to reboot their PCs. Both Chrome/Firefox crash a lot on Ubuntu so they're forced to restart their computers. The computer specs are: AMD Athlon II X2 240 dual-core @ 2.800MHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.

Ubuntu Installation :: Separate Boot Partition - Doesn't Care About The Boot Flag On The Disk

Feb 14, 2010

GNU GRUB 0.97
Ubuntu 8.04.4
2.6.24-26

Added an SSD (dev/sdc) and decided to move some less often changed directories there. Started with /usr and /boot, leaving / on a primary in the first drive, for now. All started ok, and my changed fstab mounted the right ones, and the system works.

However, grub is actually using the original /boot on / on sda1. I cannot see any way to change this. (Which makes it sorta hard to update the kernel

From grub:

Okay, since it has two choices, I tried to tell it which one to use. But, grub> root (hd2,5) does nothing.

Disk /dev/sda:

what I seem to recall, grub doesn't care about the boot flag on the disk. Nor does it care about primary vs. logical (except GNU doc says "makeactive" only works on a primary?).

The GNU doc also indicates that it looks for a directory /boot on the partition, so if you're mounting a partition as /boot, it also needs to contain a /boot directory under it. Tried that, but no change.

Is my problem the logical partition? Does that prevent "grub> root" from changing it? I'm afraid to wipe out the old /boot and find that I can't start up.

I'm trying to install F11 on a machine that was running well under F10 just a few hours ago. Otherwise the machine's configuration is identical to the way it was when running F10.
