It does this before it shows the ubuntu logo, which slows the boot time drasticly. The text flashes pretty quick, so I could only catch some main details. I've tried looking up my specs for my laptop to see what chipset the built in graphics runs off of but all it gives me is video memory is like 32mb and max allocated ram
View 1 RepliesUbuntu has been crashing on boot. I used a recovery mode kernal and went into failsafe mode, upon which point a msgbox told me to switch to low graphics. Then Ubuntu looked completely normal and functional with no problems. To me - an Ubuntu amateur, it seems like a driver problem and that running in failsafe mode will have its setbacks.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI wanted to update my NVIDIA Drivers from the default to 256 (or whatever the latest is on their site). After the upgrade from their site and installing it through a command line, I've had trouble. For some reason, whenever I boot, I get the Kubuntu boot screen, even though I run plain Ubuntu. Also, after I boot it defaults to low graphics mode, and I have to hit "restart X" to make it run normal. Even then, visual effects won't enable, and games won't run, because apparently the "hardware device cannot be found". My attempts to revert back to old drivers have been unsuccessful; It says it's running the recommended right now, but I still have all these problems.
View 2 Replies View RelatedJust a little background I have a sony vaio VPCZ119X laptop and have been struggling to get all components working under linux especially the intel graphics. I saw that once I upgraded to the latest available kernel release which currently is 2.6.37 rc7. The intel graphics is working, but sometimes when I boot I get a blank/black screen but seems to be lit up. All other functions seem working so for example I am able to login etc just that I dont see anything on the screen.
I have tried the following so far to identify the issue or isolate it:
- Switching to the console screens has no effect, still the black / blank screen.
- Restarting the system does not always immediately get the screen working, sometimes it takes a couple of reboots before the screen is available
- I have a switchable graphics with nVidia I never get this problem when I use the nvidia driver
- I have tried closing the lid etc as suggested in the below post without any change in output, will try further as there are other options available as well The "Black Screen" on Boot I see one difference between both the Xorg log files but I am not able to reason out why this happens hence I will just supply the files here and try not to theorize.
Xorg.0.log - This was the log output when I got the X display working Xorg.o.log.old - This was the log output when the X display was black/blank Also to highlight that I am using the latest kernel release that is still being tested I guess so maybe it is also a bug in the kernel?
I'm having no end of problems trying to get 10.04 onto my older Toshiba Satellite A50 laptop that I use as a spare laptop round the house. The laptop previously dual booted with XP and Xubuntu fine. I wanted to give Lubuntu a go to see if it's performance was better on this older hardware. When installing I got the black screen of death, and also got the same problem with the Xubuntu CD. Research pointed me in the way of this article: [URL] I was able to boot the Lubuntu Live CD using the instructions outlined in method A.
Once installed however I rebooted and Grub seemed to be knackered. Just sent me to a recovery console of which I had no idea what to do. As I could no longer boot into Windows either I reinstalled Xubuntu 9.10 and all was fine. I decided yesterday to give it another bash this time connecting to my wireless from the live cd hoping it would download an update to fix this problem. Nadda, Grub this time did show and I was able to boot into XP, but upon picking my Linux distro I now get an unrecognised device error with a long string of charachters and then it dumps be back into the grub menu, choosing the recovery mode version does the same thing.
I've been using ubuntu on a new desktop for a couple of months, but i had an old HP that was given to me in my basement. It has 384Mb of ram, and thats because i had a 256Mb stick laying around. I installed debian becuase it is more suited for older hardware (at least from what I've read). It installed fine, but it boots to a blank screen, and pressing ctrl+alt+F2 bring me to the command line. I checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change the driver to vesa, to find out my video card isn't even shown. I ran lspci and I found that it says my graphics card is Intel Corporation 82810E DC-133 (CGC) Chipset graphics controller (rev3) In the device section of xorg.conf, it merly says Identifier"Configured Video Device"
View 12 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 and in short, in my experience, it's terrible. All it did was bug my machine. When I enter the wrong credentials on login, it spins forever "checking" so I have to restart the computer. When I enter any credentials to unlock my computer after a lock screen (even if they are perfectly correct) it spins forever "checking." So I disabled the lock screen on sleep feature, which I hate having to do because I live on a college campus where anyone could pick up the computer and look at my notes without a password, but I have no alternative. Also the fingerprint scnaner on my lenovo worked perfectly before the upgrade and now it doesn't, it's apparent that it is very messed up, lighting up sometimes, and mostly not when it should. Additionally, I can't update my computer or download anything from the software center because it believes my root password to be incorrect. no matter what. This is the most frustrating thing I have ever encountered in day to day ubuntu use and I might just switch OS's because this is just counterproductive and a waste of time.

Using CentOS 5 and from within the local root user I opened the log in screen preferences and then opened the Security tab. I then opened the "configer Xserver" and I have unchecked the "logins are handled by this computer". Now Since I have logged out of root all I have is the X cursor on a black screen and no log in. Obviously logins are not handled by this computer as I unchecked it! Is there anyway to get this back on as I cannot access this from another PC.

I'm using SolydX, based on Debian Jessie. XScreensaver is installed and disabled, but it still locks my netbook screen after some minutes and suspend mode. Waking the netbook up brings XScreensaver login window. I'd like lightdm login window to appear instead.

It was working fine, wireless enabled, connecting to my network fine. Then for what seems like no reason, it decided to disable the wirless on boot, and I cannot re-enable it, the option to enable it (by right clicking the nm applet) is greyed out.
I have had this problem twice now, the first time it happened, my ubuntu installation was really new, so I just reinstalled, no harm done. The second time I did something that seemed to fix it (for a while at least), but now that is not working.
After boot process, desktop effect always disabled. I have checked "Enable desktop effect" but still disabled. So I have turn it on manually. Whats the problem with my desktop effect? I'm using Kubuntu 10.10.

After roughly 30 secs running the screen has a red cast and a grid pattern to the bottom right of the mouse. Need directions to solve this such as new drivers or an exact sequence etc as i've only got 30 secs to completee process before it freezes. Specific graphics card is a gainward gtx 460 GLH too btw
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've set up a triple boot system (Ubuntu Karmic, Windows Vista and OSX86 -- a patched OS X which works on a PC) on a Dell 9200 (C2D 2.13 GHz, 4GB RAM, nVidia G210). I sue Grub2 as the bootloader and update-grub picks up OS X and it boots without any problem.
However, although when booting OS X using its own Darwin bootloader, I can apply the boot option "Graphics Mode"="1680x1050x32" to ensure that I get the screen resolution that I want, when OS X boots from Grub2, the only resolution available is 1024x768 which is disappointing. I have tried adding gfxmode=1650x1050x32 to the OS X section of /boot/grub/grub.cfg in Ubuntu but this does nothing.
I can't seem to get Ubuntu to run on my old Dell Dimension 2300. It boots to a purple screen then it goes to a black screen with a load of writing nothing else happens after this screen. [URL] Could someone advise how I can get it to work?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to run 10.10 off a USB. On one computer with a nice discrete AMD graphics card, the thing boots fine. On a Dell Latitude e6510 with Intel HD Graphics (the one that comes with a Core i7) I get to the boot screen, the initial text crawl, and then the screen blanks.
Now, I can hear the standard Ubuntu start up noise about 20 seconds later so I know everything is running, just the video driver is not.
I can not do a CD install or anything off the hard drive, only the USB. I'm wondering if anyone knows some edit you can do at the boot menu (using tab) to revert to some graphics safe mode.

I have Acer Aspire S7-392. It has two 128GB SSD drives. They are using RAID 0. Currently there is Windows 8.1 installed on the RAID 0 drive.I am trying to install Debian 7.6 (wheezy) alongside Win 8.1 (dual boot). Actually I have already created linux partitions and installed mentioned Debian on my computer. I had to skip grub installation due to fatal error that had occurred. (Everything on existing RAID 0 volume).Now I am looking the way to install grub and boot Debian. I have disabled UEFI Secure Boot. It didn't work.
My question is:
1. Is it possible to have Win 8.1 and Debian dual-bootable on the same RAID 0 volume? How to install grub and boot debian?
2. If not, what am I supposed to do to achieve what I want (these two systems on one computer)? Delete old one RAID 0 and create two new: one for windows and one for linux partitions?

I have a new sony vaio VPCF11NFX/B with a fresh install of Lucid. I am using a VGA-out to a LCD monitor. It shows up and is recognized. I cannot get video to appear on my laptop monitor. Moreover, when I unplug my external monitor, I cannot boot into ubuntu. It brings me to low graphics mode and I can't do anything from there because half of the screen is missing.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe last few days I have had to reboot my Ubuntu-workstation when the screen suddenly goes black. After some seconds I get a pop-up with the message:
Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode
There is some buttons that tells me I can do different things (like reconfiguration ) but whatever I do I end up loosing all windows I worked in earlier. And having to reboot to get back full resolution. I have not found any way to reproduce this behavior. It has happened after being logged in for several days and sometimes just after boot and login when I'm starting an xterm and in all time intervals in between the output of:

Recently upgraded to 10.04 after countless problems w/ Karmic & already problems with Lucid! The screen sometimes suddenly goes black, then goes into low graphics mode, if I let it, thereby changing screen rez & unless I reboot, I am stuck in this mode. If I don't choose temporary low graphics mode, I must reboot. Many others seem to be experiencing the same problem yet have been offered no solution by the developers. So.

One problem I have had is that while using my computer on occasion everything will be stopped and there will a message against a black background telling me the graphics card and screen could not be detected I have several options which are something like.
Run Ubuntu in low graphics mode for one session (which brings me to a normal login)
Run Ubuntu from a console (or something like that, it goes to a console)
Troubleshoot the error (I'm new to Ubuntu and never tried it)
Restart X (I never used it)
I think I missed one or two. "Run Ubuntu in low graphics mode for one session" works for me, but it is still a nuisance that I have to login again. It doesn't happen that often, not everyday at least and happens at random. I could have been using it for over an hour so I wonder why it suddenly can't detect the graphics card or monitor.
i tried gnome out on my laptop. very slow. and all the text is a bunch of blocks. this makes no sense, as my eee pc 1000HE with the atom's mediocre graphics ran the shell fine before the screen got smashed. my laptop is a dell latitude d400, with the intel 855gm integrated graphics chip. I am using ubuntu 10.10. I was using ppa:ricotz/testing for gnome shell.

Here's my specs:Processor: Intel Core i7 720QM (1.6 GHz)Memory: 6 GB DDR3 (1333 MHZ)Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 330M (1 GB VRAM)Hard Drive: 500 GB (7200 rpm)Native Resolution: 1920x1080I shrunk my Windows partition, installed Ubuntu on it's own partition with swap space, and mostly everything went fine. When I booted up, the resolution was set at something like 2048x1536, and it only displayed the top left corner of about 70% of the screen. When I changed to any other resolution, it looked really bad, and the whole screen still wasn't displayed.
Then something popped up telling me to install a driver for my graphics card, so I did, figuring it would fix the problem. When I booted and picked Ubuntu, I was stuck with a black screen. So I restarted and tried booting into safe mode. I got in, and it displayed the whole screen at 800x600. Still no luck in regular mode, however.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on what used to be a windows vista. I bought me a new graphics card today so that I could run dual screen (GeForce210). I saw a guide at [URL] and I followed it.
I typed: sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
then I restarted my computer, once again as instructed I typed:
sudo nvidia-xconfig then logged out as instructed...
After I logged out the screen went black and I was not able to login. So I restarted my computer. Now when I turn on my computer I am getting this error and it's stopping at it.

It stops on this screen. I do not want to wipe it but I cannot get it started. I do have an external hard drive and at the moment I am using my Ubuntu disc to "try Ubuntu" I was going to try backing up everything I have but it will not let me access root because I am not logged on to that user, is there anything I can do to get pass this? I've called around and no one is willing to work on my computer since it is now running on Ubuntu 10.10
