I have a new sony vaio VPCF11NFX/B with a fresh install of Lucid. I am using a VGA-out to a LCD monitor. It shows up and is recognized. I cannot get video to appear on my laptop monitor. Moreover, when I unplug my external monitor, I cannot boot into ubuntu. It brings me to low graphics mode and I can't do anything from there because half of the screen is missing.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThe last few days I have had to reboot my Ubuntu-workstation when the screen suddenly goes black. After some seconds I get a pop-up with the message:
Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode
There is some buttons that tells me I can do different things (like reconfiguration ) but whatever I do I end up loosing all windows I worked in earlier. And having to reboot to get back full resolution. I have not found any way to reproduce this behavior. It has happened after being logged in for several days and sometimes just after boot and login when I'm starting an xterm and in all time intervals in between the output of:

Recently upgraded to 10.04 after countless problems w/ Karmic & already problems with Lucid! The screen sometimes suddenly goes black, then goes into low graphics mode, if I let it, thereby changing screen rez & unless I reboot, I am stuck in this mode. If I don't choose temporary low graphics mode, I must reboot. Many others seem to be experiencing the same problem yet have been offered no solution by the developers. So.

One problem I have had is that while using my computer on occasion everything will be stopped and there will a message against a black background telling me the graphics card and screen could not be detected I have several options which are something like.
Run Ubuntu in low graphics mode for one session (which brings me to a normal login)
Run Ubuntu from a console (or something like that, it goes to a console)
Troubleshoot the error (I'm new to Ubuntu and never tried it)
Restart X (I never used it)
I think I missed one or two. "Run Ubuntu in low graphics mode for one session" works for me, but it is still a nuisance that I have to login again. It doesn't happen that often, not everyday at least and happens at random. I could have been using it for over an hour so I wonder why it suddenly can't detect the graphics card or monitor.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 it works perfectly fine, until I boot with no screen. Then I get the "low graphics mode" and I cant remote desktop into it...
View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.04 installation takes me to a blank (monitor away) screen. I have followed Google searches and forums and have tried all the nomodreset & radeon.setmode=1 stuff on command line and have failed. If you press F6 on the menu and play with the options you would see that half the options do not work even if you select them. Why even have "nonodreset" as an option when it does not do anything? Did the developers not once wonder that having installation that is not based on grapic driver (that is text based or safe mode based) would be the way to go. Go ahead and Google "Ubuntu installation blank screen" and you will see that this is a pretty massive problem.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhat happened was, i used sticonfig to attempt to OC my graphics card, it all seemed to work well, then i put some stress on the card and got a 'black-ish' screen. No matter i though i will boot into text mode (How do you do it normally? The only reason i could was because i crashed my system and could choose recovery mode to then choose text based) and change it back to default and it will all be fine, woo... But apparently you need to be in X server for that command to take effect. ****...........
How do i get into text mode from booting up?
How can i fix this?!
I have tried looking in BIOS but there is nothing there. Have i just fried my card? (It was close to max settings - although only on full load for like 1 second) Could booting up normally, and just 'going in blind' work, like opening up terminal with a hotkey and just entering the command from there....

I wanted to update my NVIDIA Drivers from the default to 256 (or whatever the latest is on their site). After the upgrade from their site and installing it through a command line, I've had trouble. For some reason, whenever I boot, I get the Kubuntu boot screen, even though I run plain Ubuntu. Also, after I boot it defaults to low graphics mode, and I have to hit "restart X" to make it run normal. Even then, visual effects won't enable, and games won't run, because apparently the "hardware device cannot be found". My attempts to revert back to old drivers have been unsuccessful; It says it's running the recommended right now, but I still have all these problems.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

Also, at Grub there are several old Ubuntu selections from a previous install I did a long time ago; not the next oldest 1 or 2 Kubuntu versions, older Ubuntu versions.
My desktop has been shifted about half way to the right and a "black hole" has been left. I'm not sure how else to describe this, so I will include a picture to try to make things clearer:
I have no idea how I have done this. The Android SDK Emulator is the only thing I have downloaded and played with recently. I've checked monitor settings, changed the background image, adjusted the number of desktops (all desktops are affected), logged out & back in and rebooted. I'm not sure where else to look. Googling hasn't given me any more clues so far.
Everything else is working fine. Windows will open up normally and cover up the "black hole". Although they do leave an after-image, particularly when you move them around - like a 70s video clip!
I recently installed Fedora, I have an 80 GB HDD, partitioned it roughly 45-35, now when i open computer, I see File system that has 33 GB and vg_soba, an icon that seems like 2 stacked HDDs. That's it. What happened to my 40 GB? This is the result of fdisk -ls command (I'm a serious beginner). code...

Like half of my wireless just the mail icon from the indicator applet half the trash can or show desktop or just the power button from the indicator applet session. After I log out and log back in either once or twice that usually fixes it. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 with gnome 2.30.2.

I am running a mail server and my POP3 clients have started complaining of slow speeds, about 10 days back. This prompted me to take remedial action on many fronts, finally I decided to look at the link itself.Attempts to force the NIC into full duplex mode using ethtool have failed. The command runs and throws me back to the prompt, but the NIC remains in half duplex mode.
Command that I have tried: ethtool -s eth1 speed 100 duplex full autoneg on modprobe -l r816*:

I just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:
1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.
2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.
4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".
5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.
6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.
7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.
I'm not sure if this is the right place for this. I'm not sure which veraion of linux I have but it was the latest veraon bfor the recent update. I accidentally hit alt ctrl f11 and my comp went inyo the grub menu. I've tried startx and it does nothing. About half the commands I enter do nothing and the other half r not found or are incorrect. The only vommand thw actualley work is reboot. I searched for this and read a grub guide but it did no good.

I see black color trough half of my display. I can go blindly in upper section without being able to see, and from time to time click the shut down bottom. Do you any of you have idea how to fix it? Gateway SB400a computer with Edubuntu Lucid installed. The problem first cropped up when I installed the Edubuntu packages on Ubuntu. I did a fresh install with Edubuntu and the problem persists. I don't want to go back to Ubuntu since this computer is for my Grandkids and I want to the Edubuntu stuff for them.
I don't have the specs handy, but I can get them. what I have to do to get them. (it happens when you get old)

Just installed on my netbook the latest version of ubuntu (10.04). Have seen a few issues with other users however they have seemed to be able to make fixes.My problems are:
- Screen half brightness no change (does anyone have a fix yet?)
- Wifi not working (tried updating kernels, says they're the latest)
- Multi touch not able to be enabled, (again have seen a fix but for some reason won't work)
KDE and Windows7 both have a nice feature/setting that lets you maximize a window to half the screen by dragging it to the left or right edge of the screen.

When installer is loading linux kernel and it goes to 100%, the next thing that I can see is black screen and can just use shut-down button. This situation appears about 90% tries. After 7 reboots I installed Suse successful but the problem appears also now. Just after select Suse in GRUB, the screen print some text about half a second and it goes black. Sometime I can start system normal. I use openSUSE 11.3 Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 4gb ram, Geforce 8600M GT graphic card
View 6 Replies View Relatedi did an update after a LONG time on my machine (there were like 77 updates) and when i restarted the computer, as reccomended, it booted up saying that ubuntu is gunna run in low graphics mode... apparently i am not able to use a window manager either, as became evident when i clicked on the "show desktop" button...
also there are no tabs for any of the open windows on my "start bar" (the lower bar across the screen... also i cant switch to different desktops anymore and i cant maximize/minize or drag windows like my web browser around (probably cause there isnt a window manager running)....
