I'm running a fresh 10.04 x86-64 on a thinkpad w500, using the default video driver. The monitor shuts off randomly, sometimes while I'm using it and requires me to trigger sleep mode and waking up to bring back the screen. When it shuts off, everything else seems to be running. (i.e. its not going to sleep) I've turned off screensaver, sleep, hibernation and installed the Caffeine util to no avail.

1. When I try to enable Desktop Effects it says "Searching for Available Drivers" then says "Desktop effect could not be enabled".
2. When I play and game the has 3d Modeling, it chops to about 3 FPS and is completely unusable. But heres the deal, I have a ATI Raedon X850XT Platinum card, which I know can handle it. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and have everything up to date.

The reason why I'm pissed because so many people out there that use Linux aways say Microsoft sucks. But I have more problems with Linux, at least with Microsoft problems I can solve. Now since I got that out of my system, here's my issue.
I just installed LTS 10.04 everything was working fine, I have an ATI 5700 card installed so I installed the ATI drivers not the open stuff. After install the drivers worked perfectly no problems. After several days of using the computer, I said I'll run some updates. I did so and rebooted my computer and BOOOM now my ATI drivers do not work. I can't enable desktop effects, can't use cube etc. Not only that but if I go to the prior build it won't work there either. If this was windows 7, I would just reinstall and it would work.
Luckily for me I made a image of my Ubuntu 10.04 and did a restore and everything went back to normal because I restored the image prior to the update. Now just for kicks I ran the updates again to be sure the updates did indeed break the vid drivers. Yep, after the updates ran, reboot, BOOM broke again. What gives? Is it the kernel updates? If so then I guess I'll run updates without updating the kernel. By the way I did try to install the drivers that come with Ubuntu but that work either. I guess I have to do the restore again. I rather use the ATI drivers vs the open stuff.
Questions are the updates unstable? If it is then why release? Can anyone provide any solutions? Should I run updates but skip Kernal changes? If not then what is blowing up the drivers?

I've installed python2.7 and I want all those convenient python libs I've installed from the repos to work with python2.7, but the libs in the repos get installed to python2.6.
No problem, I'll just set the $PYTHONPATH env var so that python2.7 will look at the python2.6 libs. I defined $PYTHONPATH as I wanted in the .bashrc file, and now python2.7 works as I desire when starting it from the shell.
The problem is when I start python2.7 from the gnome desktop (by clicking an application shortcut or button) it doesn't work. My guess is that the env vars set in .bashrc do not effect the gnome desktop, and so my question is what can I do to set an env var on the desktop?
To demonstrate my problem. If I open a bash shell and type "idle-python2.7 -n" idle will open, and I can "import twisted" without any problem in the idle python shell. However, if I do alt-f2 and run "idle-python2.7 -n" idle will still open but sys.path is not set as I would like and I cannot "import twisted". So there is clearly different behavior between an application started from the shell vs one started from the gnome desktop.
Environmental variables have long confused me, I'm also open to other solutions to my "getting python2.6 libs to run in python2.7" problem.
FULL INSTRUCTION: Both .bashrc and .gnomerc are located in your home directory. Put the following at the end of both files:
You should now be able to import the python libs installed from the repos in python2.7.

The vesa driver is not capable of running Compiz, you need to install the proper driver for your graphics card. I tried with newer kenel, but no luck. I tried to install the newer driver from intel. I am not quite sure I managed to install them properly, though. Is this the appropriate sub-forum for this topic, or "hardware and laptops".

This is something that I started to notice in F12 and it appears to be the case as well in F13. Any changes that I make to my desktop wallpaper in Gnome don't stay in effect after a reboot. Any ideas as to what is going on here? I don't mind the default blue swirly thing in F13, but I at least want the style change from scale to center to stick.
Choosing the 'set as default' option doesn't seem to help either, as that changes the screen you see at the Gnome login. Once I log into my account the default desktop wallpaper is still there.

Just installed openSUSE 11.4 which comes with KDE 4.5. It has taken a while for me to find my way around and I am still trying to change settings so that VLC is default multimedia app rather than Amarok or similar. how to turn off the jerky dimming effect which was being applied when I close a window. Out of interest does anybody know what memory and cpu overhead these effect costs and how many lines of code? More to the point does anybody know who needs them?
When using Dolphin with column view does anybody know how to have the left margin shown rather than the right. As it is now, with long files names, the right hand end of the filename is shown and to see the directories I have to use a slider to scroll back to the left. I do not recall this being the case before. It used to be that the long file name was cut off unless one scrolled. In that way you could see all the directories and when moving files life was simple. Now this is not the case and actions take longer.

When I first installed openSUSE 11.2, it has no xorg.conf of course, but it detected the subject card and loaded radeon instead of radeonhd. When I used Sax2 to create an xorg.conf for a problem, I noticed that it for the device it created:
[Code]....
When I rebooted with this xorg.conf, lsmod says that it's still radeon that is loaded:
[Code]...
I know that radeonhd does cause some issues with KDE desktop effects, but according to Radeon - openSUSE, the cards above X1900 should be using radeonhd. Instead of either of these, should I try to use the ATI driver fglrx? It seems from my gleaning of forum posts that these have some problems, but I am having some desktop effect issues that maybe would be addressed with that driver.

When trying to "Leave" the system (either via the small button on the lower right of the taskbar or by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Leave") the logout / shutdown / restart screen comes up. I have the "Logout" desktop effect activated, which is supposed to desaturated the background when the Leave screen appears. However, instead of simply greying out the background, the image on the desktop and the rest of the screen also gets slightly distorted, with seemingly random distortion effects cropping up all over the place (e.g. horizontal lines or large blurs).
These distortions are different every time the Leave screen comes up. The Leave screen itself is displayed fine, and apart from the dodgy background I have no other issues with the whole process (the system shuts down or restarts properly according to my choice). I am using the Radeon drivers, and all other desktop effects I have on (Magic lamb, cover switch, present windows, etc) work fine and without a hitch. It's only the Logout effect that seems to glitch. Are the distortions intentionally created by the effect in order to emphasize the focus on the Leave screen?

I have been trying to enable desktop effects but it seems that there's some problem with intel graphics driver. Ubuntu 9.04 and older versions perfectly support desktop effects, everything works great. But with Ubuntu 9.10 and later releases, I am having similar problems.
Ubuntu 11.04 shows this message just after logging in : "It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment." While Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04 and 10.10 shows following message while enabling effects : "Desktop effects could not be enabled." I did lot of searches, tried everything but no luck.

I was playing around with my desktop effects and kinda blew it. Not really sure what I did or how to fix it. I was trying to enable some effects and I guess that I hit OK a few too many times and now when I login I no longer have the top tray or the icon menu on the left side. If I hit ALT-F2 nothing happens. I have no idea how to get back into the compiz settings to fix any of this.
If I login under a different account I'm fine, just can't get anything done with my account. Is there a package that I can remove via the command line to simply put everything back?
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04.

Is there anyway to run KDE without Plasma? At install I opted out of the kdebase-workspace package, but then didn't have the xwmconfig option to run KDE.Duplicating, then commenting out the original, and on the uncommented line: removing everything after 'Exec='. Taking the 'plasma.desktop' out. ...Deleting the entire file will only get it rewritten again by the system..Now it loads into beautiful void.I still have my GUI, complete with any kApps you might want: konsole, konqueror, and even krunner; but no panels or Desktop Activities. Is it still loading plasma only no longer implementing it? Am I losing precious RAM'CPU usage with plasma getting loaded without being used?

I want to turn off CPU throttling, and I notice how each time opensuse boots up, it imposes it.
I would like to know where it does this. I suspect - but actually I don't really know - if it's the HAL daemon that does this. Could be.
In any case, rather than have to key it in each time, I put the relevant commands (cpufreq-set) in boot.local. No effect.
I suspect boot.local might not be the best place for such a heavy duty command like this one.
Are there any there places I could put it so that it executes automatically?

I have recently installed 10.4 (wubi installation), and am having strange problems with my networking.
It was working fine, wireless enabled, connecting to my network fine. Then for what seems like no reason, it decided to disable the wirless on boot, and I cannot re-enable it, the option to enable it (by right clicking the nm applet) is greyed out.
I have had this problem twice now, the first time it happened, my ubuntu installation was really new, so I just reinstalled, no harm done. The second time I did something that seemed to fix it (for a while at least), but now that is not working.
