I have a hp g72-b620us laptop.There were three partitions a "HP Tools" a "restore" and "windows" I resized the windows partition in windows 7 with EASEUS Partition Master. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on the new partition.Ubuntu boots fine but no windows. When I select Windows 7 it crashes after the animated logo.

I've had problems getting Windows to boot ever since I reinstalled it and then reinstalled the grub boot loader. Normally one would think that I would get a Error * message or something along that line but it starts with a quick flash of some text that says "Starting.." and other stuff I can't read before it disappears. Then it goes to my computers built in diagnostic tool, which obviously won't help since it isn't a real hardware problem either.I ran fdisk and here are some odd things that came up.Quote:

I have a system with 2 hard drives. One drive (D) is my Ubuntu 10.04 system and the other drive (C) is my Windows XP system.
When I boot, I get BIOS then GRUB. If I choose the XP selection I am taken to a Boot Loader that now longer works. I get an error saying: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing. <windows root> system32hal.dll Please reinstall a copy of the above file.
Can I remove the boot loader and let Grub take me directly to the C:/windows? If so how?
when i try to boot from the disk i burned, the screen show to lines of code, then pauses and never continues with any process.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHave been running ubuntu for sometime now and love its functionality...However since a recent update have the following issues..When I power on the laptop I get the toshiba logo followed by grub loading with the message ' invalid enviroment block" "unable to load default boot entries". When I then try to run the laptop off a LiveCd, the ubuntu splash screen appears with the loading process bar (horizontal line) displayed..however it then appears to display a black screen with no further activity..Now all of this is via an external monitor as my laptop screen shows no activity right from the very start with just a blank screen....so am really stuck here wondering if its a harware/software issue or a combination of both...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been working for a while to help a friend re-activate her system after a Windows crash. I tried every way I could to restore Windows, but the system is thoroughly bollixed. The data is still there on the disk, and you can read/write if you boot off of external media. I backed up her data that way.
Details if you need them, but for now suffice it to say that I finally got her up and running by installing Xubuntu Lucid in a dual-boot setup. However Xubuntu isn't automatically recognizing and mounting the NTFS partition the way I would expect it to. I had her run a few commands in the terminal, and here's what she got.

Ordinarily I'd use mkdir then mount to solve this. But I'd like to check a few things before I go and do that.
First, as I understand it if a Windows instance is not shut down properly it can make it difficult for Linux to mount the partition. The usual solution is simply to reboot Windows and then shut down properly, but that's impossible in this case. Will that affect the mkdir/mount solution?
Second, the fact that /dev/sda1 doesn't even show up in fstab causes me some concern. Would that be a problem for mkdir/mount?
And third, how to I set it up so the NTFS partition mounts automatically?
whenever I try and boot the computer begins to load correctly, but after the scrolling ubuntu splash, I just get a black screen.
64bit Ubuntu 9.10
Had Ubuntu 10.10 running fine on a Dell box, shut down as normal earlier in the week but now won't boot from GRUB (ends up with Busybox screen and initramfs(?) prompt). PC is a dual boot system which still boots OK into the XP partition on the same hard disk. I've tried all the other Unbuntu boot options in the GRUB menu (older kernels and the 'recovery' / non-recovery options) but all produce the same failure to boot into Ubuntu. I've searched the forums and tried various things but nothing has worked so far.
I tried the fix of booting from an Ubuntu 10.10 live CD, creating a mount point and mounting the relevant linux partition before using #apt-get update and #apt-get upgrade options to repair the installation. This seemed like a logical simple solution BUT the partition will not mount!! Further investigation using the Disk Utility app in the Ubuntu drop down menu indicated an error message along the lines of 'cannot mount Daemon inhibited' which I can't seem to find much information about fixing.
Using Gparted it looks like all the partitions originally set up on the disk are still there.
I put a lot of time into getting the system set up (scanners, printers, webcams and software) and would be really annoyed to have to do it all again if at all possible ...
I have tried doing the edit as described but all that happens is a new page opens up with a document titled menu.lst.

I had a recent power outage and the computer got shut off. Then the keyboard started working for two boots. After that the error returned.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a triple boot system running Ubuntu, WinXP, and Win7.I had Ubuntu running fine on its own partition (sda1) but an upgrade from Karmic to Lucid turned it into a dog.So I tar-ed my /home filesystem, split sda1 into 2 new extended partitions, then did a clean install of Lucid with / on sda5, and /home on sda6.I should also mention that I have already tried re-installing Grub from a live USB to no avail.

I get a (initramfs) prompt and have no idea what to do with it.
Allready tried to install 10.10 again from a CD. But it also hangs immediately when it starts to install. The liveCD feature works OK and I can access the hard disk. I tried to update the initramfs with the liveCD but it says I can't write since I have only "read-only" access. But if I do "sudo nautilus" I have full access to the disk.
i tried to install xubuntu on my desktop using wubi..it instaled and everything when i tired to boot xubuntu it said

I'm having a few problems getting my system to boot after upgrading to 11.04.This problem actually first arose when I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 a couple of weeks ago, however I found I was able to boot by loading a selecting a previous kernel version (2.6.31.22 was the latest version I could successful boot from) and as I was a bit busy with exams at the time I decided to leave it be temporarily as I at least had a functioning system.I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and then finally to 11.04 today. The original problem persisted on the upgrade to 10.10 however I was at that point still able to boot using the older kernel version. On the restart after the upgrade to 11.04 however, the system now freezes when trying to boot from 2.6.31.22 or previous versions (the splash screen shows and then the system gets stuck on a blank screen with just a cursor visible, but remains responsive to mouse (cursor moves) and keyboard (goes into restart process on Ctrl-Alt-Del)).
I'm at a bit of a loss of what to do and would be massively grateful if anyone had any advice of where to start for a solution. I can access the system using a LiveCD - the output of the boot info script is attached.
I have a dual boot system (Compaq Presario CQ61) with Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed. A while back I updated my Ubuntu system to the 11.04. All went smoothly. Then recently, when the system prompted me, I installed some updates. Since then when I try to boot into Ubuntu I end up at a CLI with (initramfs) as the prompt.I can still successfully boot off of the Windows 7 partition.After reading a lot of articles describing similar problems, and failing to find a fix, I reinstalled 11.04.The system came up without any problems. BUT then, as usual, the system prompted me to install updates. Once I was done installing them and rebooted the computer I was back at the (initramfs) prompt.

I have installed ubuntu 9.10 with karmic kernel and GNOME, on toshiba 512 MB RAm laptop. it worked fine but some times after complete shut down or sleep, it wont boot again. Laptop is completely dead and silent. I had to power it off, battery taken out and inserted again to get it started again. Then it worked all normal and fine. Why it happens and what i shud do next?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have 2 USB drives. I have had 9.04 running on one for some time. I used Disk Creator in 9.04 to 'create' the drive. I use it as a reference to verify how things went in 9.04 if I hit a problem with 9.10.
However, after some months, when I tried this USB drive it produced this 'Boot Failure'. I followed up by checking the other USB drive which had Lubuntu installed via USB Disk Creator and it produced the same result ie 'Boot Failure'.
The Machine bios is set in the correct order.
I have tried to 're-do' things via 'Disk Creator' in 9.10 and 9.04 with the same result. It is not likely that both USB drives have failed at the same time.
Is Grub2 at fault in some way?
When I install either desktop version of Ubuntu 9.10 or Xubantu 9.10 it boots ok when ask to reboot at the end of the install, but will not reboot after that (2nd attempt and all after fail)On 2nd and later attempts the grub menu comes up and I choose default Ubantu and the Ubuntu circle logo displays for about 30 seconds, and most of time I see it try to access my floppy drive (sometimes the floppy drive light stays on, sometimes it does not) a cursor then blinks in the upper left hand corner for about 10 seconds and then the screen goes blank and freezes there until I power down.

Note: Xubantu installs OK to HD on another system I have, but not on this Dell. To test the Dell I did install Puppy Linux with default grub loader to HD ant it works OK (boots OK to HD each time).Side note: At first I tried this Dell to set up dual boot with XP and Ubantu and same symptoms Ubantu only booting OK once and then never again so I thought it was dual boot issue so I deleted all partions (XP is now gone) with latest GParted version and attempted installing Ubuntu 9.10 and then Xubanto 9.10 on the whole harddrive but still no boot past the first time I though this might not be a grub issue since it seems to get past grub and the Ubantu circle shows for about 30 seconds before the system freezes. only a guess on my part as I don't know enough about Grub or Ubuntu to troubleshoot without help. I see I can hit "e" to get to the grub editor and I looked at the grub boot code but don't enough about it to edit for a fix. I thought about Lilo but did not see an option on the normal Xbuntu ,or even when I used the alternate install CD,for a Lilo option. Also note I can run the live CDs for Ubuntu and Xubuntu OK on this Dell. Only HD install gives me problems.
After performing the periodic update on 2010-05-26 including libc, libc6 and libgtk2.0 my system fails on boot with the following error message:

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! If I boot from the 10.04 live CD, all partitions on the hard drive are visible, mountable, and pass all file system checks.
I have 3 separate hard drives, I IDE and 2 SATA. The IDE has side by side installation of Windows XP and Ubuntu. The 2 sata drives each have Ubuntu only. I upgraded the 2 separate drives to 10.04. with no problems I then upgraded the dual boot Ubuntu to 10.04 and it would no longer boot I formatted the partition and did a clean install of 10.04 Thereafter the Ubuntu on the dual boot drive will boot but windows will not nor will either of the 2 separate drives. Results text from boot info search is attached. I can access the 2 Ubuntu drives through the funcitonal Ubuntu on the dual boot drive, but cannot boot them.
View 1 Replies View Relatedon my pc, that was running WinXP, I thought of installing Ubuntu. (I did install linux already a few times in the past years and use it on another couple of pcs) But something went wrong. This machine has 2 x 200MB maxtor drives, in raid 0 configuration, supported by the motherboard Nvidia chipset, and working well in Windows. When ran the live Ubuntu 10.04 cd, gparted was not able to access the drives in raid configuration, until I installed the mdadm and kpartx packages then the existing data became visible. So after that initial moment I thought all was ok and proceeded to install Lucid on the machine, dual booting with Windows. I did partition manually so that in my 400GB raid drive there is an 80GB NTFS partition with WinXP, a 90GB extended partition for Linux Ext4 and Swap and then a last NTFS 200GB partition for data. All went well, but now on restarting the computer nothing happens, nothing loads, Grub is not showing, and it looks like I cannot launch Linux nor Windows. All the data from WinXP and the Ubuntu installation seems to be on the disks but the pc is just not booting. I suppose the problem is with the raid configuration that is not handled properly during the installation, but is there anything that I can do now, apart from reinstalling Windows Xp or installing Ubuntu in a non raid configuration?

I read around earlier & tried to use a Ubuntu disk and reboot but I have the same error.
I'm using a Dell Inspiron computer, it's just over a year old. I keep up with all the updates but unfortunately cannot say for sure which updates were taking place because I just hit the update box.
So I turn on my pc today, select ubuntu studio from GRUB and it freezes during the splash sequence - I hard shut down and the power back on and. nothing. Hard drive light illuminates once then stays off. External HDD powers on. Processor light comes on but no graphics - no manufacturer stuff, no bios entry - nothing.

PC starts but during boot hangs after ubuntu symbol and screen goes black and PC overheats. Same problem when booting off CD. I removed HDD and rigged it up as a USB) but can't read the the disk in windows. The PC works fine using old windows HD. What do I do?
