View 9 RepliesAfter reading this announcement, I don't understand if Xubuntu 10.04, or others ubuntu 10.04 variants, will be also LTS. What I understand is that :
- Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome) Desktop Edition is a LTS.
- Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition is a LTS
- Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition is NOT a LTS
- Kubuntu 10.04 seems to be a LTS
- Xubuntu 10.04
- Mythbuntu 10.04
- Ubuntu Studio 10.04
Obviously, I can't understand how some variant could be LTS and not some others : they are all using the same repositories. So, Canonical would maintain updates for only selected packages ?Does anyone knows more about that LTS attribution ?
i am new to linux and i nid a bash script to Delete selected backup files and also restore selected backup file to a user define directory.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a multi-user machine with several network interfaces (Ethernet, if that matters). I wish to grant selected users, or groups, full access to selected network interfaces (including ability to adjust IP address and to bind to low ports, but *only* on those interfaces). It is important to me that an user/group does not such full control over other interfaces. Granting partial, or temporary, root permissions is OK; it's a friendly environment. How do I go about it?System: Linux 2.6.recent; usual Debian setup (can be adjusted if needed).

I installed the 32 bit version of Debian Jessie (8.0) on an Asus X205TA. The Asus X205TA laptop is quirky like a lot of Intel Baytrail Atom laptops/tablets in that it has 32 bit EFI but a 64 bit capable CPU, and installing Linux on them is an exercise in frustration. Jessie is probably the first distro to support 32bit EFI out of the box, and the install went surprisingly smoothly. As expected the sound and built in WIFI does not work, but everything else seems to work well.
I spent half a day compiling the 4.03 kernel but it crashes on boot, and I ended uninstalling it in frustration.
Is there any backport of the 4.0 (or 4.1 which is currently a release candidate) for Jessie? Debian also seems to have pulled the kernel image off of their "experimental" repository.

I've used the backport described on the debian news to switch from Open Office to Libre Office. It didn't work with Synaptic, but without any complications when I used "apt-get" on the command line.
Unfortunately this left me with a confused synaptic package management:
My former Open Office is gone, but I get notifications for an Open Office update. I tried to solve the problem by deleting the backport-ressource from my sources list, but the notification won't vanish.
Except Libre Office I'm using a clean squeeze installation without anything I couldn'd find on the main sources list...
Does anybody know how I can get rid of this useless notification?
In trying to get something else working, I installed a newer version of the kernel from backports (I'm on 2.6.26 lenny and the backport kernel is 2.6.32). That failed, so I want to remove the backport kernel completely.
I tried:
Code:

I don't really understand how these metapackages work and I don't want to accidentally remove my currently-working kernel.
What's the correct way to remove all packages related to the backports kernel and leave the existing lenny ones alone?
I am trying to upgrade my texlive installation. I am currently using Lenny, but it turns out that the moderncv class is not working with my backport installation of LyX (1.6.5) and the classicthesis class is missing (which was previously available for debian). It turns out that the new versions of these packages are the in the testing branch, so I added that branch to my repos. Now, if I wish to install the relevant new versions of the texlive packages, synaptic told me that it must remove and upgrade things like KDE from 3 to 4! which has nothing to do with texlive that. I do I do then? Can I avoid changing my trusty KDE 3.5?
View 3 Replies View RelatedOn my raspberry pi 3 with debian jessie I'd like to install a new version of ejabberd (xmpp/jabber server). For some platforms, the latest version 16.02 is available under jessie-backports, but for armhf, it is not: in the table at the bottom of <https://packages.debian.org/jessie-backports/ejabberd>, next to armhf is the version 16.01 listed in red, instead of 16.02 in green as for amd64 etc. What do these colours mean, and why the difference in versions? Will 16.02 become available for armhf as well in the (near) future, or is this an indication of a more serious problem?
Jessie's older version 14.07 does not offer the features I need, and 16.01 does not run at all; hence my hopes are pinned on 16.02.
Just added Squeeze multimedia repositories in source list, but get this after reload :

However, update for Audacity & Mplayer showed in Update Manager, and I successfully updated.
I am running Debian squeeze. A while ago I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.38 from backports. Just now I thought it would be good to upgrade to 2.6.39 from backports. Upgrade went fine, but after rebooting I get a kernel panics rightaway.
"No filesystem could mount root, tried:"
"Kernel panics = not syncing: VFA: Unable to mount root fs on unkown-block(0,0)."
This is the first time one of Linux installations halts/panics on booting, so I don't know what to do now. I tried booting the recovery entry from the grub boot menu, but same result.
I'm on Wheezy with version 304.117 of the proprietary nvidia driver installed and working, but an application I have needs a newer version of the driver. I'm trying to install the 319.82 version in backports by following the instructions given here, but when I issue the command to install nvidia-kernel-dkms, I get the following:

The mint-flashplugin problem is a separate issue which I've had for a while. I assume that it can be ignored for the purposes of this post.
If I'm reading the aptitude output above correctly, it's telling me that the only way to "resolve" the conflict is by uninstalling all nvidia support, leaving me with no driver at all. Is that right?
I installed 2.6.38 from backports. It boots OK, and among the start-up messages it says it has started kdm, but then it offers only a console login prompt, no GUI. I assumed (perhaps optimistically?) that newer kernels would be backward-compatible, and that any dependencies on other software would be enforced by the package mechanisms. Running amd64, Squeeze, KDE.
View 6 Replies View RelatedFor some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.
I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?
Sometimes a kernel image seems to have the same version as the backported kernel image, for example:
linux-image-2.6.32-bpo.5-amd64
linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64
What are the differences between the two?
There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).
ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.
Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?
Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.
How do i download and install updates? It says package not found.

I'm running CentOS 5.4 and noticed that for the past month there haven't been any new updates showing up either on 'yum check-update' or 'yum update' (I'm interested in basic and security updates). Although this may be right, I wonder if there is an online reference where I can check the updates that are released for CentOS (security bulletins) and make sure if there is anything wrong with my update system.

View 1 Replies View RelatedBefore I was forced to delete (actually rename) my .gnome2 directory in order to get a fresh start, I had an icon on my panel (task-bar? SSSsssss ) that would kill the next window that I clicked. Useful when a program stops responding. My problem: Rebuilding my panel, I don't recall the name of that utility. I had originally copied it off one either the Applications menu or the System menu but I can't find it now.My questions:What is the name of that kill-next-clicked-window utility? What directory (presumably some place under .gnome2) holds the links to the programs on the panels? My search under the renamed .gnome2 directory yields a lot of nearly empty directories and nothing I can identify as my objective. (In case I get it into my head to manually edit the panel - not likely.)
