Debian Multimedia :: Fix Update Notifications After Backport?
Jul 9, 2011
I've used the backport described on the debian news to switch from Open Office to Libre Office. It didn't work with Synaptic, but without any complications when I used "apt-get" on the command line.
Unfortunately this left me with a confused synaptic package management:
My former Open Office is gone, but I get notifications for an Open Office update. I tried to solve the problem by deleting the backport-ressource from my sources list, but the notification won't vanish.
Except Libre Office I'm using a clean squeeze installation without anything I couldn'd find on the main sources list...
Does anybody know how I can get rid of this useless notification?

Is there any way to get update notifications for security patches on debian jessie. I was using update-manager and update-notifier and wheezy and that worked good, Update-notifier on jessie doesn't seem like its working...

I'm trying to manually install Squeeze/KDE - i.e. not the whole kitchen sink that comes with the DVDs but a cut-down version suited to my needs. Since it's a custom install, and since I'm no expert, I can't be sure (even after reading TFM, and browsing forums) wehether the problem I'm having is to do with KDE/debian, or with my install method. Anyway, the jist of the matter is that after several attempts to install debian/kde, each time using slightly different sets of packages, I either have sound in KDE notifications, but not elsewhere, or else everything starts okay, but after some untraced post-install tweak I lose sound to everthing except KDE notifications.
I'm certain that it's not simply a matter of not setting the sound levels high enough, as Wesnoth (one of the packages not making sounds) cannot be set in the preferences dialog to enable sounds (i.e. cannot place check marks in the sound preferences dialog). Other games are also without sound, and so are flash videos in iceweasel. Also, when I start systemsettings>multimedia all of the tests come up positive with the nice kde sound being made.I've installed all the phonon packages I can think of, with and without alsabase. I've also tried to use a different backend apart from xine, but other than that I'm stumped.

What package provides the utility found in the gnome-control-center for changing the notification themes? There is a gconf key that says slider, so it's possible it can be changed there, but I'm not certain what themes are available/valid

Is there a way to disable all popup notifications in openSUSE while still having it check for updates periodically. What I would like is for the notification icon to appear when an update is available but to not popup the notification message, or worse, show that dialog stating that some software sources were not available when I'm on the corporate network.
Also, is it possible to disable some updates like the recent KDE one? I right click it and there is an option to disable notification of an update but the menu item is disabled.

I installed the 32 bit version of Debian Jessie (8.0) on an Asus X205TA. The Asus X205TA laptop is quirky like a lot of Intel Baytrail Atom laptops/tablets in that it has 32 bit EFI but a 64 bit capable CPU, and installing Linux on them is an exercise in frustration. Jessie is probably the first distro to support 32bit EFI out of the box, and the install went surprisingly smoothly. As expected the sound and built in WIFI does not work, but everything else seems to work well.
I spent half a day compiling the 4.03 kernel but it crashes on boot, and I ended uninstalling it in frustration.
Is there any backport of the 4.0 (or 4.1 which is currently a release candidate) for Jessie? Debian also seems to have pulled the kernel image off of their "experimental" repository.

In trying to get something else working, I installed a newer version of the kernel from backports (I'm on 2.6.26 lenny and the backport kernel is 2.6.32). That failed, so I want to remove the backport kernel completely.
I tried:
Code:
and got:
Code:
Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?]
I don't really understand how these metapackages work and I don't want to accidentally remove my currently-working kernel.
What's the correct way to remove all packages related to the backports kernel and leave the existing lenny ones alone?

I am trying to upgrade my texlive installation. I am currently using Lenny, but it turns out that the moderncv class is not working with my backport installation of LyX (1.6.5) and the classicthesis class is missing (which was previously available for debian). It turns out that the new versions of these packages are the in the testing branch, so I added that branch to my repos. Now, if I wish to install the relevant new versions of the texlive packages, synaptic told me that it must remove and upgrade things like KDE from 3 to 4! which has nothing to do with texlive that. I do I do then? Can I avoid changing my trusty KDE 3.5?

On my raspberry pi 3 with debian jessie I'd like to install a new version of ejabberd (xmpp/jabber server). For some platforms, the latest version 16.02 is available under jessie-backports, but for armhf, it is not: in the table at the bottom of <https://packages.debian.org/jessie-backports/ejabberd>, next to armhf is the version 16.01 listed in red, instead of 16.02 in green as for amd64 etc. What do these colours mean, and why the difference in versions? Will 16.02 become available for armhf as well in the (near) future, or is this an indication of a more serious problem?
Jessie's older version 14.07 does not offer the features I need, and 16.01 does not run at all; hence my hopes are pinned on 16.02.

I am running Debian squeeze. A while ago I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.38 from backports. Just now I thought it would be good to upgrade to 2.6.39 from backports. Upgrade went fine, but after rebooting I get a kernel panics rightaway.
"No filesystem could mount root, tried:"
"Kernel panics = not syncing: VFA: Unable to mount root fs on unkown-block(0,0)."
This is the first time one of Linux installations halts/panics on booting, so I don't know what to do now. I tried booting the recovery entry from the grub boot menu, but same result.

I'm on Wheezy with version 304.117 of the proprietary nvidia driver installed and working, but an application I have needs a newer version of the driver. I'm trying to install the 319.82 version in backports by following the instructions given here, but when I issue the command to install nvidia-kernel-dkms, I get the following:
Code: Select all> sudo aptitude -t wheezy-backports -r install nvidia-kernel-dkms

The following partially installed packages will be configured:
mint-flashplugin-11:i386
12 packages upgraded, 2 newly installed, 4 to remove and 151 not upgraded.
Need to get 32.3 MB of archives. After unpacking 9,440 kB will be freed.

Internal error: found 2 (choice -> promotion) mappings for a single choice.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:
Remove the following packages:
1) glx-alternative-mesa
2) glx-alternative-nvidia
3) libgl1-nvidia-glx
4) libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386
5) nvidia-alternative
6) nvidia-kernel-dkms

Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?] q
The mint-flashplugin problem is a separate issue which I've had for a while. I assume that it can be ignored for the purposes of this post.
If I'm reading the aptitude output above correctly, it's telling me that the only way to "resolve" the conflict is by uninstalling all nvidia support, leaving me with no driver at all. Is that right?

I installed 2.6.38 from backports. It boots OK, and among the start-up messages it says it has started kdm, but then it offers only a console login prompt, no GUI. I assumed (perhaps optimistically?) that newer kernels would be backward-compatible, and that any dependencies on other software would be enforced by the package mechanisms. Running amd64, Squeeze, KDE.

About two weeks ago I enabled KDE factory repo to get the latest KDE 4.4. Everything was fine until a recent update, which caused sound working only in some applications. Sound now works when tried in System Settings and Yast->Sound, but it does not work in Firefox, VLC, Skype, and so on.

There is a notifications-daemon, which shows sometimes infos like "5 updates, 5 security issues". It is represented by "i" in the system tray bar.Unfortunately, I cannot read the whole text of the messages there. I tried to click on it, right click, drag and what ever...Right now I have a line there "In order to complete this upgrade,...". And I cannot read it completely. How do I work with these notifications? Btw, KDE is running.

My sound was working fine except I couldn't get system sounds (notifications) to work. So I decided to install pulseaudio to see if it would fix it. Now I get system sounds and my other sounds, but now in most things (such as firefox and warcraft 3) the sound is choppy. I've tried SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE and a couple other things I've googled but it's not working for me. I'd like to be able to fix it or at least go back to the way it was.

Just did a recent update with Sid, and upon reboot, I noticed that the theming engine appears to be out of whack a little. I've provided a screen shot for some clarity. As you can see, some programs that open do not use the set GTK theme, but instead reverts back to default. I've also noticed that in appearances, I now get that message that says pixmap engine is required, even though I have it installed. The biggest update was to gnome 3.0.2. At the moment, it doesn't affect usability at all, and I'm hesitant to undo the updates, as things that didn't work before now works! Ahh Sid! Living life on the dangerous side I is! If anyone can provide some insight into this issue (a fix is not of high priority),

I'm using debian with cinnamon desktop on a laptop with a second monitor. The panel (the bar where there are the application title bars with some system infos like battery status and clock) is only displaying on one screen depending if it is set as a primary screen. I wanted a way to get a second bar on the second monitor.
Ideally I wanted that each bar should display only the application which is present on that screen but this is completely optional. The most important thing I wanted is at least to duplicate the bar on the second monitor so I can check the clock and other infos..
First I thought that this should be only a little configuration problem.. But I rapidly understand that this is simply not possible. But I also discovered that the new version of the cinnamon desktop (2.6) have got many improvement and is that provide this dual screen options.
I then saw that my version of cinnamon is the version 2.2.16 (the version that is supported by debian). I went to the cinnamon website but I don't find any information on how to install this version.. All the information is related to the linuxmint distro.

I recently installed a base Squeeze system and then did apt-get install xfce4 to get the XFCE DE. Is this XFCE 4.0 or is it the newer version? This is kind of a stupid question but I haven't been able to divine a concrete answer out of Google. If "apt-get install xfce4" indeed doesn't install the newest version of XFCE in Squeeze, then how can I get it?

I have been having problems with Squeeze last day or so, but thought would do all system updates available in hope this would stop the system crashes only to find that upon reboot my dock of choice, Cairo-Dock, which is set to auto start puts a message on screen saying it has no plugins available and that it will not run as a result. And it just won`t run. The update included updates for Cairo Dock and it`s plugins, which it seems have all updated correctly and package manager says every available plugin IS installed as it was before, what I can do to correct this annoying issue?

I've been using the testing branch for quite some time with no major issues. However, yesterday's upgrade (I run dist-upgrade roughly every day or two) I've been experiencing some very low FPS rate - about 150-250 according to glxgears. My gfx card is a bit old - Radeon Xpress 1100 (200M).
Xorg.log and syslog are both fine. I've tried forcing the "radeon" video driver in xorg.conf as well as the automatic "ati" value without any effect.
It could be a bug, or it could be something resulting from the upgrade of any of the packages.
