Ubuntu :: Get Selected File Script?

Mar 3, 2011

I am trying to create an option in the right click menu to append the currently selected file/folder to a text file that a script will read later and delete the files in the list. Is there a way I can do that? I know how to write a script to read the text file and delete the list but I don't know how/if you can get the currently selected file with a script. Is that possible?

Networking :: Granting Selected User Access To Selected Network Interface?

Oct 3, 2009

I have a multi-user machine with several network interfaces (Ethernet, if that matters). I wish to grant selected users, or groups, full access to selected network interfaces (including ability to adjust IP address and to bind to low ports, but *only* on those interfaces). It is important to me that an user/group does not such full control over other interfaces. Granting partial, or temporary, root permissions is OK; it's a friendly environment. How do I go about it?System: Linux 2.6.recent; usual Debian setup (can be adjusted if needed).

Ubuntu :: Utility To Kill Selected Window?

Jan 3, 2010

Before I was forced to delete (actually rename) my .gnome2 directory in order to get a fresh start, I had an icon on my panel (task-bar? SSSsssss ) that would kill the next window that I clicked. Useful when a program stops responding. My problem: Rebuilding my panel, I don't recall the name of that utility. I had originally copied it off one either the Applications menu or the System menu but I can't find it now.My questions:What is the name of that kill-next-clicked-window utility? What directory (presumably some place under .gnome2) holds the links to the programs on the panels? My search under the renamed .gnome2 directory yields a lot of nearly empty directories and nothing I can identify as my objective. (In case I get it into my head to manually edit the panel - not likely.)

Ubuntu :: Selected 'auto Loggin' From The Install CD?

Sep 9, 2010

Just got Ubuntu (latest, greatest) installed. IIRC I selected 'auto loggin' from the install CD, but I'm unsure how this works. I have a user loggin 'ray' and a PW that's all OK. In the GUI, if I want to do something heavy it asks me for a PW which tells me that I'm 'root' at that time. But at the CL prompt I can't log in as root with no PW nor with the PW I use as 'ray'. BTW, is there somewhere I can bitch about the install CD? It was not an unpleasant experience, but I think it could be a bit better.

if there is a way of selecting a specific area of the screen and increase brightness? The thing is that I had to reduce my monitor brightness and contrast, due to recurring headaches. I have created a script that allows me to change nvidia settings quickly, but when switching to the brighter setup my eyes hurt even if it is just for a moment. So I would like to be able to brighten a specific area of the screen.

Ubuntu :: Canonical Would Maintain Updates For Only Selected Packages?

May 1, 2010

After reading this announcement, I don't understand if Xubuntu 10.04, or others ubuntu 10.04 variants, will be also LTS. What I understand is that :

- Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome) Desktop Edition is a LTS.
- Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition is a LTS
- Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition is NOT a LTS
- Kubuntu 10.04 seems to be a LTS
- Xubuntu 10.04
- Mythbuntu 10.04
- Ubuntu Studio 10.04

Obviously, I can't understand how some variant could be LTS and not some others : they are all using the same repositories. So, Canonical would maintain updates for only selected packages ?Does anyone knows more about that LTS attribution ?

Ubuntu :: Mount Selected USB Drives As Msdos Filesystem?

May 3, 2011

I recently switched to the Ubuntu 10.10 version from the 8.04 version, and when I looked for the Drive and Volume tabs in the USB Properties dialog, they were no longer available. In 8.04, I used the Volume tab to set the mount point and file system for selected CompactFlash drives connected to the computer through a USB adapter. It is important that these selected drives be mounted as msdos rather than vfat because of the characteristics of the legacy system that they are used with.

how do I get the functionality I had in 8.04 under the Drive and Volume tabs of the device properties dialog?

Red Hat :: Copying Selected Text Using Vi?

Nov 20, 2010

how can i copy and paste selected text from one file to other using vi in RHEL5.i googled and found some methods, like just use m to mark the start, with an arbitrary buffer name (so you might type mx). Move your cursor down to where you want to stop copying, and type y'x (or d'x if you're cutting and pasting). Then move the cursor to the point where you want to paste, and type p. when i do this it pastes the entire line of which a part is selected so in essence it is working as yy. when i open a new file using vi and try to paste it says "nothing in register".what i exactly want to do is copy only the selected text as shown above in red and paste it in a new file.

I've been searching for and working on possible solutions for several days to no avail. There are some similar posts on various forums but few quite like mine, and solutions I've read haven't solved my problem. I tried booting to the windows 7 repair disk and selecting the repair start up option, but the message tells me no problems were found.
