I installed 2.6.38 from backports. It boots OK, and among the start-up messages it says it has started kdm, but then it offers only a console login prompt, no GUI. I assumed (perhaps optimistically?) that newer kernels would be backward-compatible, and that any dependencies on other software would be enforced by the package mechanisms. Running amd64, Squeeze, KDE.
View 6 Replies View RelatedOn my raspberry pi 3 with debian jessie I'd like to install a new version of ejabberd (xmpp/jabber server). For some platforms, the latest version 16.02 is available under jessie-backports, but for armhf, it is not: in the table at the bottom of <https://packages.debian.org/jessie-backports/ejabberd>, next to armhf is the version 16.01 listed in red, instead of 16.02 in green as for amd64 etc. What do these colours mean, and why the difference in versions? Will 16.02 become available for armhf as well in the (near) future, or is this an indication of a more serious problem?
Jessie's older version 14.07 does not offer the features I need, and 16.01 does not run at all; hence my hopes are pinned on 16.02.
I am running Debian squeeze. A while ago I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.38 from backports. Just now I thought it would be good to upgrade to 2.6.39 from backports. Upgrade went fine, but after rebooting I get a kernel panics rightaway.

This is the first time one of Linux installations halts/panics on booting, so I don't know what to do now. I tried booting the recovery entry from the grub boot menu, but same result.
How can I forward all traffic from a public IP to another public IP. Let's say I have a first debian box named box1 with eth0 = 1.1.1.1 and eth0:1 = 1.1.1.2 and I want to forward all traffic from 1.1.1.2 to "box2" located somewhere else over the internet and having for eth0 2.2.2.2 Both 1.1.1.0/24 and 3.3.3.0/24 are public IP ranges.

I installed Chromium Browser and made it default. The version which is available through squeeze and wheezy main is a dinosaur, and as such I cannot install any Chrome addons. I tried ubuntu or launchpad ppa for Chromium-Daily. I added [URL] maverick main to my Third party Repositories. Its not working.
The terminal returns an error:

I've installed it properly until it works now, it does send emails and receive them, but heres the problem.
1) it does not send emails to a certain domain, unless i do dpkg-reconfigure on exim4 and put the domain on allowed relay... can't i just put something on settings which allow to send emails to ALL domains?
2) EVERYONE can connect to the server by telnet from any position, terminal or pc, and just use an existing user to send emails to anyone.... example, i have testuser123 setted up in debian/exim4 .. then they simply write "mail from:testuser123@host.dot" and the server accepts it.. without even request an authentication for that. And this is a problem, because everyone can use my email addresses to send emails to whoever.. heaven for spammers/hackers..
In one of my customers, the new internet connection have no public IPV4(using GCNAT), only public IPV6.
And there are various services that require external access, like, vpn (openvpn), a java/web system, ssh, rdp(windows).
fileServer(by vpn).
All is running ok in IPV4.Maybe, the solution is a NAT 6to4. We know this is the future, no more public IPV4.
I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)

When I connect to the network at the university library, it totally overwrites my /etc/resolv.conf file to something like:
This is pretty annoying, so I tried comprimising by making a file with the school's domain and search entries plus the Google nameservers, then revoking write permission on the file. However, I couldn't access any domain name with this config on their network, so I reverted to using their nameservers. I keep all the school's entries commented out when I connect to my home network.
My ultimate question is what is actually overwriting the file? I suspect that my connecting through DHCP is responsible. Whatever it is, I'm pretty annoyed that no back up file was created.
I recently just installed Squeeze on an ia64 system and was having some troubles with running VNC.I get the following error, more specifically for some reason I get a malloc - memory corruption error:

Running apt-key update has not solved the problem.
apt-get install debian-archive-keyring was a recommended solution from some googling.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I activate Tor in Iceweasel, it forbids me access to the internet completely. Even attempting Google results in "Iceweasel is configured to use proxy server that is refusing connection".
I have seen this in Lenny, too - it was caused by activating Tor without having installed privoxy. I installed privoxy and everything was okay. In Squeeze, Tor is using polipo. Polipo is installed and running. I have not played with settings of polipo or Tor, the configuration is the same as it was after installation.
What can be wrong? I am a rather an user than a networking guru. I am connected to internet by means of DHCP, no local lans, no special routings, no additional proxies. I have already tired to reinstall polipo.
Just installed squeeze on a new laptop(had been runny Lenny on my older one with no issues, but no sound or wireless on the new one).I decided to install the ATI drive for my Radeon Mobility 4500(or some close revision) because the fan is constantly running and based on some other postings, it seems that it could be the graphics card causing it.Downloaded the driver from ATI's site and it seemed to install fine but when starting X.

I am a member of the disk and fuse groups, /dev/fuse is owned by root:fuse, and /sbin/mount.ntfs points to /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g, which in turn points to the ntfs-3g executable. I kind of need this ASAP. I am supposed to be finishing with this machine in 35min, and I am dead in the water without the ability to copy some files from the Squeeze ext4 partition over.

I found a thread that indicated that this bug was fixed in the next kernel version: 2.6.32-6. I am willing to upgrade the kernel to get rid of my problems. Is a squeeze kernel at 2.6.32-6 or higher available? If so, where? I have not compiled my own kernel, and am not very interested in getting into that.
I use my laptop at the college, and I've to suspend him frequently. So, I've decided to install the package pm-utils, to hibernate my PC, instead of power off it. When I try to do "# pm-hibernate", a tty appear, and this error is displayed :

As a long time user of some other distributions I decided to switch to Debian and installed 6.0 from amd64 kde cd image.Upon logging to KDE I discovered thatant locate knetworkmanager anywhere,it doesnt autostart and I could not find it anywhere else.I am connecting through a wireless network to the Internet so I cant connect through the Ethernet to download it through apt-get for example,if it is not installed by default.lly confused,knetworkmanager is standard tool in KDE but I cant find it in Debian 6.0
View 9 Replies View RelatedA couple days ago I installed Debian Lenny (netinst) to my friend's laptop, a IBM Thinkpad T23. Got a black screen after gdm loaded and the laptop seemed frozen. Decided to upgrade to squeeze. I edited the apt sources file and changed all the instances of lenny to squeeze, and then upgraded.Had the same display problem, but found a web site that suggested disabling acpi. So I did that, got the sound working, (needed cs46xx firmware), and all seems to be running fine.I get some weird udev messages at boot time, but I have a feeling that's due to how I upgraded. I can't copy and paste since the messages aren't in my system log. If anybody wants more information about it, I can supply it. pgrep shows two instances of udev running so it appears the messages are only warnings.When upgrading to squeeze, I used tds.net debian mirror links. Earlier today I switched to Debian's official US repo URLs and had to upgrade about 250 packages after reloading package data.
Now, when I click on System -> Administration -> Time and Date.After a couple seconds I get a dialog box that says "The configuration data could not be loaded" in bold black letters. Underneath that in smaller letters, "You are not allowed to access the system configuration" I receive that same error when accessing "services" and "users and groups."But I can access the synaptic package manager and update manager from the administration submenu.
I installed the 32 bit version of Debian Jessie (8.0) on an Asus X205TA. The Asus X205TA laptop is quirky like a lot of Intel Baytrail Atom laptops/tablets in that it has 32 bit EFI but a 64 bit capable CPU, and installing Linux on them is an exercise in frustration. Jessie is probably the first distro to support 32bit EFI out of the box, and the install went surprisingly smoothly. As expected the sound and built in WIFI does not work, but everything else seems to work well.
I spent half a day compiling the 4.03 kernel but it crashes on boot, and I ended uninstalling it in frustration.
Is there any backport of the 4.0 (or 4.1 which is currently a release candidate) for Jessie? Debian also seems to have pulled the kernel image off of their "experimental" repository.

I've used the backport described on the debian news to switch from Open Office to Libre Office. It didn't work with Synaptic, but without any complications when I used "apt-get" on the command line.
Unfortunately this left me with a confused synaptic package management:
My former Open Office is gone, but I get notifications for an Open Office update. I tried to solve the problem by deleting the backport-ressource from my sources list, but the notification won't vanish.
Except Libre Office I'm using a clean squeeze installation without anything I couldn'd find on the main sources list...
Does anybody know how I can get rid of this useless notification?
In trying to get something else working, I installed a newer version of the kernel from backports (I'm on 2.6.26 lenny and the backport kernel is 2.6.32). That failed, so I want to remove the backport kernel completely.

What's the correct way to remove all packages related to the backports kernel and leave the existing lenny ones alone?
I've been testing Squeeze to determine whether KDE4 is finally suitable for my primary machine. Everything seems to be working fine except for detection of IDE devices. My CD/DVD drive no longer automounts and the reason seems to be that no device is being created. My Lenny system detects the drive as /dev/hda, but no such device exists in Squeeze. During boot, Squeeze appears to detect the drive as /dev/sr0 (according to dmesg), but in fact that device does not exist either.I'm actually running the Lenny kernel, as I am unable to compile my Ralink wireless driver (rt2860sta) using the Squeeze kernel. Also, for inquiring minds, I use removable HDD drive bays on my systems to simplify testing.
