Ubuntu :: Auto-shutdown After A Process Stops?

Jan 12, 2010

in windows I have this little program called "poweroff". I use it to shut down my pc after vlc stops playing a movie. I set vlc to shut itself down after playing, and then the program starts a countdown to shutdown the pc. is there a similar program for ubuntu? could this be achieved through the command line? I'd like it to give me little warning period though, where I still have the option to cancel.

I upgraded to 10.04 weeks ago and have been running it fine. Now when I start up my computer it gets to the GRUB loading stage (counts down to 0), then the monitor goes blank for a moment and then several thin scratchy lines about an inch wide in total appear across the top of the monitor and it just freezes there. The boot process just stops.I've had these lines appear ever since I upgraded, but they were always momentary and the boot process just continued. Where do I start in diagnosing and fixing this?

Ubuntu :: Karmic Netbook Release Stops Auto-mounting Drives

Feb 27, 2010

I installed UNR recently and after a few days, it stopped auto-mounting anything not part of its default installation. Meaning, it won't auto-mount anything plugged via the USB as well as any other drives or partitions I added to fstab. Everything seems to be correct especially since it works fine on my desktop and I have exactly the same configuration (of course except for the UUIDs). I have to manually go to Disk Utility just to mount and eject/unmount.

UNR also stopped showing 'detected' and 'mounted' drives via the "Files and Folders > Volumes" section, even tho the system detects these drives/partitions (eg. via Disk Utility or blkid).I have the permissions for the logged-in user set. I have the nautilus automount setting checked (it was never unchecked). For the fstab part, the UUIDs are correct and everything else. For the USB part, well, just like the fstab part, no auto-mounting at all.

I use xfce4 battery plugin and there is the option to invoke a shutdown whn the batt. hits critical percentage, but I would like to be able to run something at the low percentage stage to save any open files in case the critical stage is reached. I have had no luck googling any solutions or potential solutions.

Ubuntu :: White Logo Splash Stops Boot Process?

Jan 4, 2010

I'm having trouble with the initial white logo splash in 9.10. Apparently without exception the boot process stops during the white logo segment. I don't think it freezes because I can turn NumLock on and off.

If I edit the menu entry and remove "quiet splash" from the "linux ..." line the computer boots perfectly fine without any errors. How can I diagnose this?

If not, how would I find out what the issue is?

Ubuntu Servers :: System Won't Shutdown + Apache Not Auto Starting / Fix It?

Nov 12, 2010

First post here so I'll do my best to provide the information needed.

System:

Dell Poweredge R310
Xeon 3460 2.8Ghz
4x2GB ram
4x 160GB Sata 7.2k (RAID 10)
Ubuntu Server 64bit

If I type as root, "reboot" or "shutdown -r now", nothing happenings - except the apache2 process stops + the usual "System is going down for reboot now". If I type "shutdown -h now" the system goes down.

Upon booting the server back up, MySQL starts correctly, but Apache2 does not - I have to run "service apache2 start", and it starts up fine.

I feel the 2 issues are related. I've reinstalled apache2 completely (configs and all) and this didn't help - I used yum to install/reinstall it.

However, there is one issue: when i go to restart or shutdown the computer, the graphical interface goes away like it should, it goes to CLI and does it's shutdown routine....the problem occurs about 2 seconds into the routine, when it just stops. it doesnt shutdown or restart, but stays in the CLI with a blinking cursor. if i allow it to set for a couple of minutes, a message pops up that says something like this, "BUG: soft lock up CPU0 CPU1 stuck, blah blah". any ideas on what this is or what is causing this? the laptop has the i5 processor in it, just in case that matters

Ubuntu :: Shutdown Hangs - Rc Main Process Killed?

Code:

Then I have to shutdown the computer manually with hardware button. It's no big deal, it's just not that comfortable and I'd really like to know why this is happening.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 / Gnome Flakey Auto Bootup & Shutdown

Mar 29, 2010

I didn't notice any relevant complaints regarding 11.2 in the archives. The bootup & shutdow may be different problems. Randomly my recent install boots up fine or hangs with a blank black screen. A Ctl Alt F2 gets me to a prompt. Startx returns a lockfile comment that X is already running.

From here I can shut 11.2 down and restart it OK. There must be a bootlog kept in /var somewhere. I haven't tried the non-automatic bootup. The shutdown randomly drops back to the logout screen. Usually a shutdown command from there will shut it down. Sometimes shutdown doesn't work, but restart will finish the shutdown.

Software :: Mythwelcome - Auto Shutdown And System Clock Not Working Properly

Mar 29, 2010

I installed Mythbuntu 9.04 about 9 months to a year ago and (for the most part) I haven't had any problems with mythwelcome, automatic shutdown or the system clock. The "for the most part" relates to the fact that the clock on mythbuntu has always been 4 minutes fast. Then, just last week, the system started acting up - for some reason the system clock changed to 8-10 minutes fast (6 minutes faster than it was previously). To fix this problem, I have tried manually setting the "time and date" setting, and I have also tried setting the "time and date" setting to sync with an internet server. Lastly, I tried changing the system time through the motherboard bios. In each situation, mythwelcome would initially start up with the correct time. Then, several seconds later, the time shown in mythwelcome would change to being 4 minutes fast (as I described above). The time would also be 4 minutes fast when I enter the frontend.

I was willing to live with this, but the weird part is that when I start the system now (assuming I don't have any programs scheduled to record), mythwelcome boots up fine and I see the indication that "MythTV is idel and will shutdown in XXX seconds". Then, it flashes to "MythTV is idle" - like it used to; except now, it doesn't flash back to the countdown for shutting down mythtv. One time when I started the system when I was adjusting the time as mentioned above, I noticed that mythwelcome went to the "MythTV is idle" around the same time it changed the clock to 4 minutes fast - I think there is definitely a correlation here.

I checked out all the settings and nothing else has been changed that would otherwise affect MythTV from shutting itself down. The other interesting part is that I can get the shutdown countdown back if I go to "Utilities / Setup", "Setup", and "Mythbuntu". In the popup screen I choose "MythTV Configuration" and select "Launch MythTV Setup". I get a popup box that says that the mythbackend must be closed (as expected). Then I immediately exit mythtv-setup and the system runs "mythfilldatabase". I exit the Mythbuntu Control Centre and exit the frontend. When I get back to mythwelcome, the shutdown countdown comes back.

Ubuntu :: Killing All The Process On Restart/halt/shutdown Instead Waiting For Scripts?

May 9, 2010

I haveing a big problem atm (just after to upgrade to 10.04). I have a simply and easy script that sent a halt command to every KVM virtual machine actually running into the server. this script is/and was) palced as a init-rc script in rc0/rc1 and rc6 lvls. Just after to upgrade, I have noticed that this script is executed but the system ignore the time that it require to finish (giving time to correctly stop a single virtual machine). Aftert 5 second it start sending SIG-TERM and SIGN-KILL to any currect process and then reboot/halt.

I have just done a new script using upstart and I got just the same result. What is happending? why is the waiting the init secuence for a valid/or_not termination of any init script. I am so sorry for this crap english I have never study this language so I try to do my best anytime I speak it (or try ti..).

Ubuntu :: Process (including Boot, Shutdown, Download, Open Programs, Etc) Is Freeze Until Move The Mouse Or Hit Any Button?

Nov 26, 2010

1) Any process (including boot, shutdown, download, open programs, etc) is freeze (don't have any progress) until I move the mouse or hit any button, so for install and use my ubuntu I have to keep moving my mouse and as you imagine is VERY TIRED.2) I get some general freeze on random times, neither the mouse, keyboard or process move, I notice that if I unplug power it unfreze, and I can work for some time. This 2 problems annoy me a lot, and I suspect is a problem related to my Netbook Model, I read about someone that has the same problem but no solution there.

This is what I did:I Try Ubuntu loading from my USB memory (1GB), run very good but with the 2 problems, but I thought it can be resolved installing.I installed along side with W7, couldn't boot Ubuntu, so I configured GRUB2 and it could enter now, but if I don't press **** after selecting Ubuntu it give me the BusyBox, and then the same 2 problems.I get rid of my W7 and did a Full Install on my 160GB HDD, hoping it can work fine, but no.I install all updates and no effect on that.
