Ubuntu :: Shutdown Hangs On "deactivating Swap" / Solve This?

Mar 7, 2010

Last night I shut down my computer and left, since it goes automatically after I tell it to shut down. This morning, my computer was still on, with some shutdown messages like "Stopping MySQL server mysqld" and such.
The last line said "deactivating swap..." and didn't appear to be doing anything. code...

Ubuntu :: System Hangs When Deactivating Swap For Power Down

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 otherwise flawlessly on a 2007 core 2 duo Macbook. Right now its set up to triple boot with OS X Snowleopard, Windows 7 Ultimate, as the other operating systems. I'm asking because I'm frequently having to force my system to power down after shutting down from Ubuntu, and I'm concerned that I could be corrupting files and damaging my hardware.

Ubuntu :: Auto-shutdown After A Process Stops?

I set vlc to shut itself down after playing, and then the program starts a countdown to shutdown the pc. is there a similar program for ubuntu? could this be achieved through the command line? I'd like it to give me little warning period though, where I still have the option to cancel.

General :: Shutdown After Swap Corruption (or Something Related)?

Mar 14, 2011

I have a box that has been running fine for a few years primarily as apache/tomcat/mysql server.Just recently, it has started spitting out a bunch of messages and shutting down. The computer is running FC11, x86x64.If anyone can glean anything from the messagesIf you need any more info, let me know. I can get someone to start it up, and get as much as I can before it crashes. From looking at the messages, it seems like it could be something going on with the swap, but I'm not sure. The messages are below.(The box is on the other side of the country from me, so I don't have a ton of info, and it's hard for me to get someone to physically restart it for me...so it's kind of a pain.)(You'll see a lot of errors related to SSHD. I don't know if that's because SSHD is the culprit, or if it's because I was connected using SSH. For some reason I'm leaning towards it being something other than SSHD.)

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Deactivating During Locked Mode?

Aug 29, 2010

I have a HP Pavillion DV7 laptop running Ubuntu 10.04, and I am having some problems with Ubuntu handling a network connection. Every so often, I leave my computer in locked mode overnight to download something. But, when I do this, the network just deactivates early on [there is a symbol of a blank wireless symbol with a red "?" by it]. Both the wireless and wired network connections are deactivated, and I am using a wired connection. This also sometimes happens in suspend mode, too, but less often. I have to restart my computer before it will connect again, as logging out and back in again does not suffice.

Here's the issue:I don't understand why I have to plug in a hard line to activate the driver. Shouldn't it stay activated once I download and activate it?

Ubuntu :: Swap Or Swap File On Flash Memory?

Aug 16, 2010

RAM for older machines like I use is fairly cheap these days. But flash memory is just as cheap or cheaper. So I'd like to ask about the feasibility of expanding my system's memory using flash memory. And about whether creating a partition for swap on the flash memory, or whether a swap file on the flash device, is the better way to go.

By flash memory I have in mind mainly USB sticks or what are sometimes called "pen drives." But I do also have CF and SD cards that, with the proper cheap adapter (one of which I already own for adapting CF) could be used to create extra swap space. So, what is the current consensus on the feasibility/advisability of using flash memory for swap? I've read about the limited write cycles of flash being an argument against using it for swap. But recent reading indicates to me that the limited write cycles problem applies mostly to older, smaller-capacity flash memory. Some will come out and say that, for larger-capacity flash memory, the life of the device is likely to exceed the amount of time your current computer will be useful (I think I've seen estimates in the range of 3-4 years life--minimum--for newer, higher-capacity flash memory).

A more persuasive argument I've heard against using flash memory for swap is that access times for these devices can be much slower than SATA, and maybe even IDE, hard drives. That would certainly dictate against using flash memory for swap.

So, how about some input on this issue? Anyone using flash memory for swap? If so, what kind (e.g., usb stick or SD/CF)? Are you using a swap file or a swap partition? How's system performance? Likewise, has anyone had flash-memory-used-as-swap die on them? The consequences would undoubtedly be dire. Also, has anyone measured flash memory access times to confirm or refute claims about slow access times? Are some types of flash memory better/worse than others in terms of access times?

Dec 10, 2010

I have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .

Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?

Ubuntu Networking :: Stops Working In 10.10 And Firefox Randomly Stops Working?

Nov 13, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64-bit on my desktop with a wired internet connection (with no firewall). For the past 2 days, I have observed that1. Firefox randomly throws up errors like "Problem loading page" whenever I click on a hyperlink. When I click on Reload, the page loads up just fine. This has been happening a lot recently..and I do not remember updating anything consciously. By the way, ipv6 is disabled in Firefox.2. The network stops working all of a sudden (usually indicated by the Firefox error). The Autho Eth0 indication is active, but I am unable to connect to any external machine.

3. Needless to say, this error is manifesting itself in apt-get as well. I get "something wicked happened" errors all the time, and am unable to download or install anything. That this is not a problem with the ISP is obvious because I also have Windows (from which I'm typing this, ironically), which is able to access the internet. Is this a bug in Ubuntu 10.10?

General :: Locate Shutdown Log For Linux Shutdown (RHL 5.1-2.6.18-53.el5PAE)

I cannot locate shutdown log for Linux shutdown to check various activities carried out during shutdown. I can view Startup Log which is availble on console>Applications>System Tools>System Logs.

I have included Shutdown/Startup in dbora, so that Oracle 10gR2 Shutdown/Startup will be automated during OS Shutdown/Startup.

I want to check Shutdown log because Oracle Shutdown was not running, as from $ORACLE_HOME/shutdown.log contains no entries, where as startup log contains latest startup details.

That means here 2 issues are there. One, I want to locate OS Shutdown Log and the other being Why Oracle Shutdown not getting executed.

FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

General :: [FYI] "last -f <old Wtmp> -x Reboot Shutdown" Incorrect For Last Reboot And Shutdown?

Mar 25, 2010

Further to this LQ thread which Tinkster solved by suggesting the last command (thanks Tinkster) I have been exploring last -x reboot and have found that the reported duration is incorrect for the last reboot and shutdown when a old wtmp file is used. Not having a record for the following shutdown, last assumes that the system has been up until the current time and similarly for the shutdown.

The output comes in time order, latest first, each line showing the time of the reboot and the uptime from then to shutdown. Using last -x reboot shutdown to show the shutdown time, here's an illustration

Code:

shutdown system down 2.6.29.6-smp Sun Mar 7 15:35 - 03:02 (11:27)
reboot system boot 2.6.29.6-smp Sun Mar 7 09:35 (05:59)
09:35 until 15:35 is 05:59.

When the uptime exceeds 24 hours it is shown as (<days>+<hours:minutes) like this
Code:
shutdown system down 2.6.29.6-smp Sun Feb 21 12:39 - 13:20 (00:40)
reboot system boot 2.6.29.6-smp Sat Feb 20 09:39 (1+02:59)
09:39 until 12:39 the next day is 1 day 02:59.

The time in parentheses at the end of the shutdown lines is normally the time until the next shutdown.

So far so good. The incorrect output is for the last reboot and shutdown of an old wtmp file. Here's the output of last /var/log/wtmp -x reboot shutdown; last -f /var/log/wtmp.1 -x reboot shutdown

Code:

[snip]
reboot system boot 2.6.29.6-smp Fri Mar 12 07:42 (01:54)
shutdown system down 2.6.29.6-smp Fri Mar 12 01:31 - 09:37 (08:05)
wtmp begins Thu Mar 11 08:25:26 2010
[snip]
reboot system boot 2.6.29.6-smp Wed Mar 10 14:12 (15+01:42)
shutdown system down 2.6.29.6-smp Wed Mar 10 12:41 - 15:54 (15+03:13)
[snip]

The boot started at "Wed Mar 10 14:12" which had an actual uptime of 1 day 11:20 is reported as 15 days 03:13 which is the time from then until the last -f /var/log/wtmp.1 -x reboot shutdown command was issued. The time from shutdown to shutdown is similarly affected.

Ubuntu :: "shutdown" In Terminal Vs "shutdown" In Desktop

Feb 26, 2010

I'm new to Ubuntu and have spent several days trying to make a few simple alterations to my Myth 9.10 installation. My biggest task was to get the MCE "power" and "start" buttons working, which they now are - sort of.

The problem is with the shutdown command that the power button activates seems to be different to the shutdown command from the taskbar shutdown menu i.e. when I switch off the computer with the remote it restarts with the "recovery" menu as it wasn't shutdown properly. Same thing happens with the shutdown command from a terminal window. Shutting off from the desktop menu is fine.
