How to Schedule auto shutdown in Ubuntu? I am a newbie. Last night I have some downloads in progress while at the same time I really wanted to go asleep. Just curious if it is possible to schedule a complete system shutdown and start up?
My box with ubuntu server on it is only used as an ssh/proxy server, so I would like save on energy costs and add a layer of security by completely shutting it down during the hours I do not use it.
I have setup Rsync as a daemon on a Ubuntu 10.04 box and the setup was successful. Here are my configs

in windows I have this little program called "poweroff". I use it to shut down my pc after vlc stops playing a movie. I set vlc to shut itself down after playing, and then the program starts a countdown to shutdown the pc. is there a similar program for ubuntu? could this be achieved through the command line? I'd like it to give me little warning period though, where I still have the option to cancel.

I use xfce4 battery plugin and there is the option to invoke a shutdown whn the batt. hits critical percentage, but I would like to be able to run something at the low percentage stage to save any open files in case the critical stage is reached. I have had no luck googling any solutions or potential solutions.
I found an application AUTO POWER ON & SHUTDOWN in windows which is really very useful to those who have night unlimited broadband connection. I searched for similar application in UBUNTU as I am slowly shifting to UBUNTU from 10.04 (maveric) version. /etc/rc0.d/S89casper is a link though, so I just edited the file it points to (/etc/init.d/casper) -- seems to be working. I merge a modified "casper" at every boot, next time I build a Remastersys, I'll try to make it permanent.
First post here so I'll do my best to provide the information needed.
System:
Dell Poweredge R310
Xeon 3460 2.8Ghz
4x2GB ram
4x 160GB Sata 7.2k (RAID 10)
Ubuntu Server 64bit
If I type as root, "reboot" or "shutdown -r now", nothing happenings - except the apache2 process stops + the usual "System is going down for reboot now". If I type "shutdown -h now" the system goes down.
Upon booting the server back up, MySQL starts correctly, but Apache2 does not - I have to run "service apache2 start", and it starts up fine.
I feel the 2 issues are related. I've reinstalled apache2 completely (configs and all) and this didn't help - I used yum to install/reinstall it.

in order to do full backup system, i have to shutdown the oracle database. My backup software can stop the services by running the shutdown script. But in order to shutdown the oracle database, the script must be run under oracle privilege. The conflict is our backup system which is reside under root privilege cannot run the oracle shutdown script which is needed to triggered by oracle privilege.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI didn't notice any relevant complaints regarding 11.2 in the archives. The bootup & shutdow may be different problems. Randomly my recent install boots up fine or hangs with a blank black screen. A Ctl Alt F2 gets me to a prompt. Startx returns a lockfile comment that X is already running.
From here I can shut 11.2 down and restart it OK. There must be a bootlog kept in /var somewhere. I haven't tried the non-automatic bootup. The shutdown randomly drops back to the logout screen. Usually a shutdown command from there will shut it down. Sometimes shutdown doesn't work, but restart will finish the shutdown.
I installed Mythbuntu 9.04 about 9 months to a year ago and (for the most part) I haven't had any problems with mythwelcome, automatic shutdown or the system clock. The "for the most part" relates to the fact that the clock on mythbuntu has always been 4 minutes fast. Then, just last week, the system started acting up - for some reason the system clock changed to 8-10 minutes fast (6 minutes faster than it was previously). To fix this problem, I have tried manually setting the "time and date" setting, and I have also tried setting the "time and date" setting to sync with an internet server. Lastly, I tried changing the system time through the motherboard bios. In each situation, mythwelcome would initially start up with the correct time. Then, several seconds later, the time shown in mythwelcome would change to being 4 minutes fast (as I described above). The time would also be 4 minutes fast when I enter the frontend.
I was willing to live with this, but the weird part is that when I start the system now (assuming I don't have any programs scheduled to record), mythwelcome boots up fine and I see the indication that "MythTV is idel and will shutdown in XXX seconds". Then, it flashes to "MythTV is idle" - like it used to; except now, it doesn't flash back to the countdown for shutting down mythtv. One time when I started the system when I was adjusting the time as mentioned above, I noticed that mythwelcome went to the "MythTV is idle" around the same time it changed the clock to 4 minutes fast - I think there is definitely a correlation here.
I checked out all the settings and nothing else has been changed that would otherwise affect MythTV from shutting itself down. The other interesting part is that I can get the shutdown countdown back if I go to "Utilities / Setup", "Setup", and "Mythbuntu". In the popup screen I choose "MythTV Configuration" and select "Launch MythTV Setup". I get a popup box that says that the mythbackend must be closed (as expected). Then I immediately exit mythtv-setup and the system runs "mythfilldatabase". I exit the Mythbuntu Control Centre and exit the frontend. When I get back to mythwelcome, the shutdown countdown comes back.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .
Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?
when my pc boots and shuts down my monitor goes into 'input out of range' mode for a bit between the gui and the text only phases of boot/shutdown.is there a way to fix this? or where to start troubleshooting?also, when it shuts down it hangs after coming back to the text only part
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed 32bit maverick and wanted to make it login automatically. I tried enabling auto login from Admin > Login but that didnt work and I was still prompted for my password. Then I went to Users & Groups and changed the password option to Do Not ask for password at login now after I reboot, the user list is shown (only 1 user) and it doesnt ask for password after I click on my username.
However, then it gives a few errors (as i vaguely recall):
1. cannot load .ICE directory in my home directory
2. some error 256 about a gconf-sanity-2 file
3. nautilus cannot load my home directory etc
and then it gets stuck without loading anything (blank wallpaper). i ve tried navigating to my home directory using Alt F2, gksudo nautilus and my home dir contents are encrypted by the ecryptfs (there is a readme.txt file and a shortcut). i have tried to decrypt but it doesnt work... i ve also tried to start/stop gdm, and startx but nothing works. if i stop gdm, then the prompt doesnt recognize my password and keeps on rejecting the commands i enter... I think this has something to do with the home dir not being decrypted due to the dont ask for paswd option... how can i disable the dont ask for pwd without the gui (i can access my / by booting through an external usb).
I would like to exec a script whenever a user mount a device. The device could be an internal device (for example a partition on a second hard disk) or a removable one (for example a usb hard disk). The script must have sudo capabilities even if the user is not included in the admin group. Is it possible?

I tried fstab but it's changing the behaviour of nautilus see:

Recently I installed vncserver (tigervnc) on my desktop. Ever since my computer refuses to shutdown normally. At shutdown the following message pops up: Quote: System policy prevents stopping the system when other users are logged in Then I have to enter the root password to shutdown. If I stop vncserver before, the computer shuts down normally.

I cant shutdown without running sudo shutdown. When I try to use the default gnome shut down it takes me back to the logon screen. Fresh install today and I've had the same problem on other installs.

I dont think it is a temp issue since watch sensors shows temmp of 40-50C. Someimtes it happens every minute someimtes i can go 10min without it happening.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI cannot locate shutdown log for Linux shutdown to check various activities carried out during shutdown. I can view Startup Log which is availble on console>Applications>System Tools>System Logs.
I have included Shutdown/Startup in dbora, so that Oracle 10gR2 Shutdown/Startup will be automated during OS Shutdown/Startup.
I want to check Shutdown log because Oracle Shutdown was not running, as from $ORACLE_HOME/shutdown.log contains no entries, where as startup log contains latest startup details.
That means here 2 issues are there. One, I want to locate OS Shutdown Log and the other being Why Oracle Shutdown not getting executed.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have noticed that a common issue to several distros is the fact that the networking subsystem doesn't automatically detect the link if an ethernet connection is disconnected and then re-connected to the NIC after boot. If the ethernet cable is connected after the system is up and running, nothing happens - ethtool eth0 shows link detected: no, and you have to restart the network service to let the NIC know that there is in fact a link, and actually connect. I have a Fedora14 (KDE) box with a brand new Asus motherboard with embedded NIC. Everything works great except the auto-detect of a freshly connected ethernet connection if the link is down to begin with.
Am I missing a ethernet link sentinel utility or something, or is this just the way linux works? I have done plenty of research on plenty of posts, and it seems this is a common problem, with no solution other than manually or programatically restarting the network service in a script to detect the link after a disconnect.
I press On-button, Debian boots, logs in and automatically connects to the Wireless network AND! to my local pc via LAN. It runs an ssh server, so I can ssh into debian over internet and communicate with the local pc (send a magic packet).Here are my problems:
1) I don't how to log in automatically. This and this doesn't work.
2) I need a network tool that can manage multiple connections and has a reconnect feature. With the default network manager I cannot even connect to more than one network simultaneously although I have two network devices of course.
And I guess I can run all that in console mode, right?
I recently installed a server with Software RAID. I tested by powering it down, unplugging one drive and powering it up. Magically, it worked!I found out later that I have to manually add individual devices like md1 to sda2 md2 to sda4. I got all of them added and rebuilt but my question is: Is there a way to make it so that if I "removed" a drive and put it back, the system will senses the new drive and rebuilds based on some internal table?
