Jun 5, 2010I upgraded to 10.04 weeks ago and have been running it fine.Now when I start up my computer it gets to the GRUB loading stage (counts down to 0), then the monitor goes blank for a moment and then several thin scratchy lines about an inch wide in total appear across the top of the monitor and it just freezes there.The boot process just stops.I've had these lines appear ever since I upgraded, but they were always momentary and the boot process just continued. Where do I start in diagnosing and fixing this?

I set vlc to shut itself down after playing, and then the program starts a countdown to shutdown the pc. is there a similar program for ubuntu? could this be achieved through the command line? I'd like it to give me little warning period though, where I still have the option to cancel.

Jan 4, 2010I'm having trouble with the initial white logo splash in 9.10. Apparently without exception the boot process stops during the white logo segment. I don't think it freezes because I can turn NumLock on and off.
If I edit the menu entry and remove "quiet splash" from the "linux ..." line the computer boots perfectly fine without any errors. How can I diagnose this?

Sep 11, 2010I installed Lucid Lynx on my laptop a couple of months ago and for the most part everything was working fine. However, just recently the computer doesn't seem to be booting up at all. I start up the machine and then a black screen appears with the text: init: ureadahead main process (306) terminated with status 5 the (#) is different in some boot-ups
And the computer just hangs there. typing anything doesn't seem to help at all. I press enter and a new line just appears. I've left it there for hours and still no login screen.

i have no idea which driver on the list to pick so i can continue with install.

Dec 21, 2010I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

Nov 13, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64-bit on my desktop with a wired internet connection (with no firewall). For the past 2 days, I have observed that1. Firefox randomly throws up errors like "Problem loading page" whenever I click on a hyperlink. When I click on Reload, the page loads up just fine. This has been happening a lot recently..and I do not remember updating anything consciously. By the way, ipv6 is disabled in Firefox.2. The network stops working all of a sudden (usually indicated by the Firefox error). The Autho Eth0 indication is active, but I am unable to connect to any external machine.
3. Needless to say, this error is manifesting itself in apt-get as well. I get "something wicked happened" errors all the time, and am unable to download or install anything.That this is not a problem with the ISP is obvious because I also have Windows (from which I'm typing this, ironically), which is able to access the internet.Is this a bug in Ubuntu 10.10?

Feb 10, 2010Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection.It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

Description of what the code does or what i intended to do:
1. Created a child process from parent process using 'fork()'
2. Sent a signal 'SIGALRM' from child process to parent process using 'sigqueue' function.
(The Third parameter of 'siqueue' function contains the message (message msg) which the child process wants to send to the parent process.'msg' is a stucture instance containing a) pid of child and b) string) 5. Print the 'msg' sent by child process inside the signal handler function 'sig_action_function' of the parent process I am getting some junk value when this line is executed

Aug 12, 2010as we all know Process Scheduler does Process scheduling and its a process as well. I was just wondering that if this happens then the Process "Process Scheduler" should be a part of Process queue as well.
So if there are 5 process are there in Process queue & process scheduler is administrating them then since its also a process, once it puts a process under RUN state it should itself go inside queue because at one instant only one process can get executed on a processor. This is quite confusing for me. Please help me out. I tried to search on this but could not find any relevant topics.

Is it possible to save the process and log out then log in and continue the process? I know how to pause a process using kill -pause pID and continue it using kill -cont pID. But that only work if you don't log out after pausing it.
