i've just installed 10.04 lts onto an external usb drive and everything seems to be working smoothly - except i cant work out how to access the other files on the usb drive. - i used the wubi installer to install ubuntu onto the drive.
View 4 RepliesI have an hp laptop and i had ubuntu on it for 3 years. my hard drive started to fail a while ago (i had ubuntu 10 on it until 1 week ago) and a then it all went black...I took the laptop to a repair shop, they told me it was the disc, so i bought a new disc, installed it on my laptop and reinstalled the new ubuntu 11. so far so good. i have now a working OS, internet connection and i can in fact type this message.
The thing is: all my files are on the old drive, which doesn't load/boot/start/read anymore. I have tested it on some friends's pc, tried a few HD disgnostic tools, they all send the same message: "fail"
I then tried to mount my old drive (with all my precious files in it) on my laptop as an external drive (usb) hoping that ubuntu 11 could read it as an external usb key: it gets read by the system, but it shows no files at all. it also shows an error message saying the drive can not be mounted, with some "sdb1" thing. i am sorry but i'm really dumb when it comes to tech language.
Then i tried to boot it on start-up but i got the grub rescue> thing and nothing else, just a sad, blinking cursor to recover my files,i have also tried testdisk but couldn't understand very well how to use it, and then photorec, from which i recovered bits and pieces of files, with no name. some of them are just parts some of them are complete.
My problem is: i have to get access to my files, as I use them for work, i couldn't do a back-up recently and i have some real important deadline to meet... for which i need those files. is there any way i could solve the grub issue and have that drive load/mount again as external usb?
I'm a newbie and wish to copy files from USB drive to some location in Ubuntu Linux and have tried with the command 'sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb' and have received following message 'mount: /dev/sda1 already mounted or /mnt/usb busy. mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda1 is mounted on /boot'I don't understand what it says, since I don't find the usb drive neither in '/boot' path nor I find it in '/mnt/usb'. So please make me understand how do I access the files on flash drive and copy at the desired place
View 4 Replies View Relatedthought I'd take the plunge and use it as the OS for a new HTPS running XBMC. I installed a second 1TB HDD to use as a media tank that I formatted to NTFS. All is well except I cannot get XBMC to see the second drive. Its mounted and I can access it no worries, but when I go into Videos,> add source, > i'm given the home folder and my network as options, neither of which have the second drive on them. (my windows network can see the second drive but it doesn't appear as an option in XBMC
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an Apple Airport Extreme dual band router, with a 2T hard drive plugged into the USB port, formatted with FAT32. Both Mac OSX and Windows 7 automatically see the drive and all the files on it, but unfortunately, I can't get Ubuntu to really see that drive. It sort of shows an icon under network, but if I try to open it, I don't see any files in it.
I have a very unaltered off the shelf installation of Ubuntu 10.10 on a Sony Vaio, some sort of AMD dual core vintage. I never thought that it would be Linux that failed to see the router drive, but unfortunately, that is what has happened.
I have very expensive data on my laptop and many user using my laptop so i want to lock my single drive that other user not access my files and my single drive. please tell me right answer ASAP

It recognized my windows partition fine and I was able to get all my files off of that, but the majority of my stuff is on the ext4 partition that I have on it. Does anyone know how to access the ubuntu partition of this hard drive from my mac?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI changed to wubi last night, i decided to go that way cause i was informed it was a safe way to try giving it a try for linux and ubuntu without any special effort needed to be payed and easily deleted if i am not pleased.Thankfully i am pretty satisfied with the results, i pretty much dealt with most of the issues i have faced so far successfully and i am running it ok beside one important thing.See i am using my laptop, which has a hdd of 250GB.On my Vista there are 2 different hdd C+E by default, they separated my hdd.So while i have windows on C and E is pretty much used for my additional data(see movies, music etc) when i installed wubi i installed it on E, thought it would be better and it had more space.
Now though, while i can access threw ubuntu all my files that were located on C(vista) i cant access any of the E ones, and search file dont helps either.The "vista hdd" as ubuntu describes it, its a 250 gb disk on computer, which means it should contain both of the vista disks.But sadly thats not the case.i cant seem to be able to find them anywhere.

I'm currently using Win Xp and am having a major issue with a virus. I told a friend I was thinking of reinstalling windows, but he suggested Linux. He made me a disk with Linux on it but the problem is is that the virus has locked everything up so I can't access my D drive and the cd won't start automatically. I'm also unable to run most downloads...
My questions are:
Can I safely delete the partitions that Win XP is on and install Linux on after that? Is there a way (if I can make it work) that I could download Linux from the site and run it right off my computer without first putting it to a thumb drive or cd?

I've installed F10-live.iso onto a usb key but am having problems with the non-privileged user I created. When I login as kurt, I do not have access to my home directory on the hard drive. I tried [root@localhost home] #chmod kurt kurt (after cd-ing to the correct spot), but still cannot access my files there. I can do so as Live System User, but not as me.

I know that Linux doesn't understand .exe files like windows does... which is part of the problem. I have a linux zip file of a program (Jgrasp) that I want to install. I unzipped it into my home file and then wanted to run the program, but I have no idea what to do next. How the heck do I run the program if i can't access the .exe's what files launch a program in linux?Also how do i get it to recognize the JDK files?

View 5 Replies View RelatedRunning 9.10 now, I'd like to do a clean install of 10.04 on my dual-boot (with XP) Compaq notebook. As a test, I burned an ISO image onto a 1-GB stick and booted to 10.04 from it. It works just fine, except that the directories in the Documents folder on my hard drive are owned by "user 1000", and "he" grants me access to only about half of them.
Is this problem likely to persist if I actually install 10.04 rather than just running it from the stick? If so, what can I do about it? Second question: am I correct in understanding that if I still need to access my Ubuntu partition from XP, I'd better stick with ext3 for this install rather than going to ext4?
I recently decided to install Ubuntu (ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso) to my 16GB flash drive (was fat32 originally, tried ntfs as well had boot issues,went back to fat32) to boot from it using the method on this page using the Universal USB Installer. Install worked great, Ubuntu works great, problem is I can't see the rest of the files on my flash drive.

What I now did was downloaded a 'NetworkManager-0.8.0.999.tar.gz' file and a 'NetworkManager-0.8.1.tar.bz2' file (from a different comp) and have placed them onto my desktop. I have read the INSTALL instructions within and it is a tad complex for me as I am new to Linux. I understand I have to extract the files and compile them into a new folder (I think I would choose a file in the /home directory)- how would I go about doing this? Following this, I need to './configure' or 'make' or 'make install' the files

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two external hard drives. One is a 2.5" 80GB USB HDD and the other is a Seagate 3.5" USB 500GB HDD. Both hard drives are mounted properly and I can access the data on both hard drives. I can access the small 80GB HDD via ssh from another computer and delete files, but when I try to access the 500GB drive via ssh it says access denied. When I try to access it with root, I can access it but I cannot see any files listed.

The main one is Mint 8 and in order to have the same documents in both OSs I have a separate /home partition, but for some reason I don't see any of my Documents. In the installation I told fedora that I already had a /home partition and to use it. Also if I mount Mint's disk, while I can browse the folders, I can't see any document .
Finally I can access my Mint's home folder and files but since my username in fedora has a capital A it created another home folder. How can I change my home folder path so it point to the other home folder?

View 2 Replies View Related I am running a hp dv701175nr laptop and am booting ubuntu 11.04 from a usb flash drive. I can not seem to find my internal drive that has windows 7 stored on it. I tried to mount it but it give me this error:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdb1 is already mounted on /
mount failed
I can't use this operating system if I can't access my windows 7 drive and I really want to use this OS .
EDIT: Okay, so I think I have found my problem, but I don't know how to fix it, there are differences in my mtab and fstab commands, I will post what they say in a second, but I do not know how or what I need to do to change and make the settings right
I'v been trying to install Ubuntu (and actually all other dists of linux (in hope of succes), but running ubuntu on my other machines and prefer it) on my old laptop. Laptop Acer Aspire 1312XC. Have just run a 24 hour RAM test it turned out ok. Have tried with other RAM blocks in aswell. The install freezes at random points in the installation. Mainly when trying to copy files to the hard drive. The only thing i've succeded in installing was Ubuntu server and windows XP. I have tried with ACPI off and all the other special atributes. No success so far.

the permissions for my home directory were accidentally changed from 'access files' to 'create and delete files', and I changed them back, but ever since then I am not able to change any preferences/settings at all. power management, themes, panels, emerald, anything. my user account is supposed to be the administrator, and all the user privliges are checked. how to get control of my computer back?
