I changed to wubi last night, i decided to go that way cause i was informed it was a safe way to try giving it a try for linux and ubuntu without any special effort needed to be payed and easily deleted if i am not pleased.Thankfully i am pretty satisfied with the results, i pretty much dealt with most of the issues i have faced so far successfully and i am running it ok beside one important thing.See i am using my laptop, which has a hdd of 250GB.On my Vista there are 2 different hdd C+E by default, they separated my hdd.So while i have windows on C and E is pretty much used for my additional data(see movies, music etc) when i installed wubi i installed it on E, thought it would be better and it had more space.
Now though, while i can access threw ubuntu all my files that were located on C(vista) i cant access any of the E ones, and search file dont helps either.The "vista hdd" as ubuntu describes it, its a 250 gb disk on computer, which means it should contain both of the vista disks.But sadly thats not the case.i cant seem to be able to find them anywhere.
I have a dual boot, windows 7 & Xubuntu Lucid and I'd like to be able to access some files in my windows documents folder from within Xubuntu ...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was running a 2-partition hard drive, Windows Vista (lamentably) on one partition, and the other running Ubuntu. I began having trouble with the Vista partition, so I attempted to move as many of the files that I really wanted to keep as possible over to the Ubuntu partition, and then reformat and reinstall the Vista partition. As a result, I could no longer boot to Ubuntu, and I consistently got errors back from everything that I tried on the Vista partition.
The only way that I can now access anything on the hard drive is to insert the Ubuntu install disk, go into trial mode, then mount the partition. At long last, here is the problem: Is there anyway to possibly make the partition bootable again so that I could burn the files to a disk? From trial mode I can get to a number of the files on the mounted partition, HOWEVER, they are secured with the username and password of my user account on that partition. Is there any way that I can access the files from the trial mode by entering my username/password?
i've just installed 10.04 lts onto an external usb drive and everything seems to be working smoothly - except i cant work out how to access the other files on the usb drive. - i used the wubi installer to install ubuntu onto the drive.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm completely new to the Linux OS. It is very foreign to me, i'm very used to the way windows does everything, including how windows does installation. I know that Linux doesn't understand .exe files like windows does... which is part of the problem. I have a linux zip file of a program (Jgrasp) that I want to install. I unzipped it into my home file and then wanted to run the program, but I have no idea what to do next. How the heck do I run the program if i can't access the .exe's what files launch a program in linux?Also how do i get it to recognize the JDK files?

View 5 Replies View RelatedRunning 9.10 now, I'd like to do a clean install of 10.04 on my dual-boot (with XP) Compaq notebook. As a test, I burned an ISO image onto a 1-GB stick and booted to 10.04 from it. It works just fine, except that the directories in the Documents folder on my hard drive are owned by "user 1000", and "he" grants me access to only about half of them.
Is this problem likely to persist if I actually install 10.04 rather than just running it from the stick? If so, what can I do about it? Second question: am I correct in understanding that if I still need to access my Ubuntu partition from XP, I'd better stick with ext3 for this install rather than going to ext4?
I accidentally removed my network manager (gnome) from my system (via synaptic) and hence have not been able to have access to the internet to reinstall the packages. I have experimented with many commands (with help from others) in terminal with little success.
What I now did was downloaded a 'NetworkManager-0.8.0.999.tar.gz' file and a 'NetworkManager-0.8.1.tar.bz2' file (from a different comp) and have placed them onto my desktop. I have read the INSTALL instructions within and it is a tad complex for me as I am new to Linux. I understand I have to extract the files and compile them into a new folder (I think I would choose a file in the /home directory)- how would I go about doing this? Following this, I need to './configure' or 'make' or 'make install' the files
I have an hp laptop and i had ubuntu on it for 3 years. my hard drive started to fail a while ago (i had ubuntu 10 on it until 1 week ago) and a then it all went black...I took the laptop to a repair shop, they told me it was the disc, so i bought a new disc, installed it on my laptop and reinstalled the new ubuntu 11. so far so good. i have now a working OS, internet connection and i can in fact type this message.
The thing is: all my files are on the old drive, which doesn't load/boot/start/read anymore. I have tested it on some friends's pc, tried a few HD disgnostic tools, they all send the same message: "fail"
I then tried to mount my old drive (with all my precious files in it) on my laptop as an external drive (usb) hoping that ubuntu 11 could read it as an external usb key: it gets read by the system, but it shows no files at all. it also shows an error message saying the drive can not be mounted, with some "sdb1" thing. i am sorry but i'm really dumb when it comes to tech language.
Then i tried to boot it on start-up but i got the grub rescue> thing and nothing else, just a sad, blinking cursor to recover my files,i have also tried testdisk but couldn't understand very well how to use it, and then photorec, from which i recovered bits and pieces of files, with no name. some of them are just parts some of them are complete.
My problem is: i have to get access to my files, as I use them for work, i couldn't do a back-up recently and i have some real important deadline to meet... for which i need those files. is there any way i could solve the grub issue and have that drive load/mount again as external usb?
After upgrading to Natty Narwhal my Crypt Keeper app will not launch. I am now unable to access secure files. Has anyone had this issue after their upgrade to Natty Narwhal? If so, How were able to resolve this issue.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 12 a couple of days ago. This is my secondary operating system. The main one is Mint 8 and in order to have the same documents in both OSs I have a separate /home partition, but for some reason I don't see any of my Documents. In the installation I told fedora that I already had a /home partition and to use it. Also if I mount Mint's disk, while I can browse the folders, I can't see any document .
Finally I can access my Mint's home folder and files but since my username in fedora has a capital A it created another home folder. How can I change my home folder path so it point to the other home folder?
I've created a new user for a SSH tunnel only.After login I can access all directories because permissions is set for "Others" to "Access files".Now my question: Is this normal that permissions for Folder access for "Others" is always set to "Access files"?I don't want my SSH tunnel user accessing the directories.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an old Dell Inspiron 8200 which I use for doing my CCNA study on. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and it the cairo dock, all was running great, a little sluggish at times but thaht was down to the integrated display adaptor, no problem. I then decided to try out Open Suse but didnt like it so reformatted the whole disk back to Ubuntu then my problems started.
After going through the installation, I found the computer would only boot in the live CD mode, no files were copied. I then reformatted back to Windows XP and try top set up a dual boot system but the same results!, no data on my hard drive from Ubuntu!!. I then installed a new hard drive and tried a new dual boot installation but with the same results, what is stopping the machine form installing Ubuntu
I recently tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 on to my Windows 7 computer so that I could dual-boot it. I didn't want to mess about with partitioning and the lot so I just clicked Install inside Windows, assuming that it would install it and I wouldn't have to do anything. But after it installed I noticed that it had deleted all of my files and my Windows OS. I am wondering whether there is a way that I could retrieve my files, or if somebody could post some instructions so that this doesn't happen again.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI know there are already a lot of these posted. I've been reading them. The solutions posted have not worked for me. Well, OK, I haven't tried the 'reinstall GRUB 2' nuclear option. But, really. Like most, what I have is a computer (netbook really) running Win7 starter that I have installed Kubuntu 10.10 32 bit in a partition (sda7). Unlike most of the other complainants, GRUB shows me the Win7 partition just fine. Everything works. So, all I really want to do is (1) give me more than 10 seconds to respond to the GRUB menu and (2) perhaps change from default Kubuntu to Default Windows. Actually, one of the edit entries I found indicated that GRUB should be able to remember which I booted to last and default to that, which would be kind of nice. Or even set the timeout to -1 so it always waits for me.
Anyhow, since I cannot get sudo update-grub to work, all of this is moot. Everything seems to work until the end of the script where I get the dreaded "OS-prober: cannot access /var/lib/os-prober/mount/boot" message and GRUB's operation doesn't change. So, the reason I'm posting is that every other thread I've read devolves into people saying that the SYSTEM partition has two folders /boot and /Boot and get rid of the /boot. And this seems to work for many people ... but ... in my SYSTEM partition (sda2, the 100MB windows boot partition) there is only /Boot. There is not, I repeat and emphasize NOT a /boot folder. Yes, I'm looking at it with administrator privileges. I use Krusader - root mode and show hidden files is turned on. Yes, I installed BURG. It works fine but doesn't help my issues (although the brightly colored boot screen does catch my attention faster). And I had the OS-prober problem before BURG.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy system reports it successfully connected to the VPN at my workplace (pptp / windows server). So I had to enter my username and password in the VPN configuration screen, etc. My machine has Ubuntu 10.04. I tried to find out how to open the files on the server. In windows, after opening the vpn I would go to this location in the file manager:
\company-fs1UsersJulian_b
This would show me the files I am looking for. In the linux terminal, and the Nautilus file manager, these locations do not exist. I tried using mount.cifs to mount this location and it didn't work. (fails with these messages : mounting the DFS root for a particular server not implemented yet no ip address specified and hostname not found). How do I get to these files on the Windows share?
I was dual booting windows 7 RC and Ubuntu, and then I upgraded to Windows 7 when it came out, but left the RC on my computer because I had some files on there that I needed. Some of the files that I have on the hard drive where the RC is are encrypted and now I can't access that operating system therefore I can't access the files.

Our computer is loaded with Ubuntu, and my wife and I have separate accounts, which is fine. I have a backup drive with data and music and, if I want to reinstall or back something up, I have to log in as each user to do so. That is OK security wise, but I want to do a complete reload and would prefer to be able to access her home folder from my account, back it up to the other drive, reinstall and then copy everything back so she can use her files.
Also, I have a couple of files in my home partition that she wants access to occassionally. I would like her to be able to access my home directory to get to those files. If I put them on the backup drive, she cannot open them as I have the permissions. We also run KMyMoney, and would like to be able to use the same file whichever user is logged in.
I have both Windows And Ubuntu 11.04 installed. Right now I'm using Ubuntu, but when I wanted to listen to my music I can't seem to find it. It is located on the C-drive in Windows, but I can't find any ways to access that drive. I've also just started using Ubuntu (like 2 hours or so) so I do not know much about it.

From Ubuntu, I can mount the C drive and can access the files I stored there when logged in Windows. But from ubuntu, I can't access or see any files I stored in D drive when I logged in Windows. Even I can't mount the drive from Linux.
