Ubuntu :: Xubuntu Randomly Crashes, Mouse Still Responds?

Jan 21, 2010

I managed to actually get Xubuntu to install, the previous time! Here is what happened. Installation went smooth. Restart.Log on, start Firefox, close it, wait a few seconds, crash.Restarted, it's now in a higher res. Ok, used an xterm to install LXDE. Reboot.Log into LXDE, play around, crash.Restart, repeat, use Firefox, after a while of browsing, crash. The mouse still responds to movement though....The person this was intended for uninstalled it afterwards. (it was with Wubi) I'd like to fix this.

Software :: Xubuntu Programs Randomly Closing

Nov 27, 2010

I'm running Xubuntu 10.10 via USB on a Dell Latitude D505.Wireless card is a Netgear WPN111 and I'm using ndiswrapper to make it work.

My problem is this:when I open any web browser and try to navigate to a page, the whole system freezes for a few min before crashing to desktop.Using Task Manager during this time reveals that processor usage jumps to 100% and stays there until the program closes.I've tried Xubuntu on another, faster machine and it was fine.
From this I conclude that it's related to the hardware, and I think it may be some hardware protection feature operating.

Ubuntu :: System Crashes Randomly?

Jun 7, 2010

I have an old PC in my basement that I decided to load Ubuntu onto a few months ago. I ran version 9 for a while and then recently upgraded to10.04.Unfortunately, I've been having issues with intermittent system crashes using both versions. Sometimes the computer will work fine for hours and other times it will crash 20 seconds after startup. I'll be able to provide much more information tonight when I get home but for now I wanted to plant the seed in the forum and see if anyone has any ideas. The computer will be working fine and then all of a sudden the screen will go black and then start blinking, switching between a blank screen and a blank screen with a bunch of tiny white squares/lines. When I restart, things seem okay again.

Ubuntu :: Crashes Randomly To Login Screen?

Nov 22, 2010

I upgraded 10.04 to 10.10 (32bit), the upgrade process didn't go that well because first it didn't boot beyond GRUB. Solved this by unplugging my keyboard (my ubuntu is a server machine without keyboard or mouse, I like to use the desktop version through vnc). After that is booted to shell, which was not so nice either. This time it was the legendary nouveau driver which sorry for my language I will never install again (caused major problem twice already). Installed nvidia drivers and got a display for X this time and it booted nicely to login screen.

My problems have arised since the upgrade, the system will randomly "crash" and go straight to login screen, ending my current session. Sometimes my mouse cursor even changes to the X-mark. I can't see anything in gdm, x11, syslog etc. that would explain the crash. So far I've found best log from .xsession-errors which is here:

[Code]...

I got a lot IPv6 errors on the same log too, but those were caused by utorrent+too old wine. Didn't remember that upgrade deletes/disables extra-repos and I was running the stable wine (1.2.1) instead of the latest one (1.3.7). Upgrading wine solved the error from utorrent IPv6 connections.

So any ideas what I could do to fix these crashes? I'm not so much into clean re-install because of all the configuration I'll need to do then. I do have home on a separate partition but there's lots of software to install and configure.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Randomly Crashes - No Firebug With Flashblock

Aug 27, 2010

Firefox crashes randomly. Frequency: few minutes to hours. It is not website-specific. Happens on both flash and non-flash sites. Seems to happen more often when I'm doing something complicated, like editing a photo album on facebook,or using a javascript-heavy page. Safe mode does not help.It used to work perfectly. I don't remember when the crashes began, possibly a month or two ago... So I don't know if they are caused by an update or by something I installed.

Most solutions I found were for problems with the Firebug extension (which I don' have) or for problems with fullscreen flash (which is not the case).Firefox 3.6.8, fully updated Lucid 64bit When started from terminal, it sometimes outputs an exception at startup, then nothing, then "Killed" before crashing. Debian Multimedia :: Xscreensaver Randomly Crashes X

Apr 16, 2016

My supposedly stable system was crashing. The problem was one or more specific screensavers--xscreensaver, the display manager (lightDM), and X itself are innocent as far as I can tell.

I'm on a Thinkpad T400 with Debian Jessie (8.4)/MATE/lightDM. I have libreboot and not proprietary BIOS. I like variety, so in addition to installing xscreensaver itself (the unofficial patched jessie version without the "out of date" nag, which I got from https://angband.pl/debian/pool/main/x/xscreensaver/), I also installed some extras from the official repository (xscreensaver-gl-extra, xscreensaver-data-extra, xscreensaver-screensaver-bsod). I enabled all the installed screensavers and asked xscreensaver to randomly cycle through them.

To my dismay, after variable lengths of time (usually within 20-60 minutes), when a random screensaver has been on for a little while (I'm guessing as it's about to go to the next random one), X crashes to a black screen. The only way to make the black screen go away is to kill X (which I mapped to Control + Alt + Backspace) then log back in. There are no useful logs anywhere except some cryptic IO error 11 entry in ~/.xsessionerros.

Now for the troubleshooting:

1) First I tried installing a more up-to-date version of xscreensaver (5.34-2), which I grabbed from the sid repository. This didn't work--same problem as described above. Therefore, I went back to the patched version for jessie (5.30-1 from angband.pl).

2) To exclude that the lightDM middleman was the problem, I disabled it and was logging in with startx. Problem did not go away. (I then rigged systemd to log me in automatically and for startx to run automatically once I'm logged in--who needs middlemen?)

3) To exclude screensavers butting heads, I uninstalled mate-screensaver and disabled anything from X that could be interfering (by running these commands in a startup script: xset -dpms; xset s 0 0; xset s noblank; xset s off). Problem did not go away. I kept this startup script nevertheless.

4) Finally, to exclude individual xscreensaver module(s) being the problem, I unchecked them all. Then I wrote down the names of my 20 favorite modules (which include some from gl-extra, some from data-extra, and bsod) and tested them in small batches, running xscreensaver with only 5 favorites checked at a time. After testing four batches of 5 and witnessing all 20 favorites both display and load without any X crashes, I went ahead and selected all 20 favorites. I left the laptop on overnight and in the morning (about 12 hours later) it's still going strong.

One or more particular xscreensaver modules are crashing X, probably at the time they are being loaded to be the next one to show. I think I already spent enough time on this, so don't really care to identify +/- troubleshoot the offending modules.

Ubuntu :: No Keyboard Or Mouse In Xubuntu 9.10

Mar 19, 2010

I have just installed Xubuntu 9.10 for the second time on my IBM Thinkpad T30. After both installations it froze on the boot screen, then after a restart, the GRUB boot menu was displayed.

Selecting the default option, I could log into a Command Line Terminal. Typing "startx" (without the ""), Xfce started but then an error dialog box popped up with the message 'Xfce power manager. HAL daemon is not running'

There was no Keyboard response or Mouse movement. The only way out was a power off.

There have been similar posts with the same problems but there has been no real solutions. (One post has been "Solved" by installing Kubuntu, but that is not a satisfactory solution)

I will try a minimalised install, but I'm not sure what packages are required to install the Xfce desktop.

Ubuntu :: Mouse With 10.10 - Randomly Not Work Within Program

Oct 13, 2010

I'm having mouse issues with 10.10.

Equipment: Asus Eee 900, Celeron @ 900 MHz w/ 2 gig memory
Mouse: Rocketfish (but issue replicable with mousepad)

When starting a program, the mouse may randomly not work within that program but does work outside of it, or vice-versa. For instance, when starting the text editor, the OS may not recognize mouse clicks inside the program (within the text editing portion, within the text editors menu bar etc.), but it does recognize mouse clicks outside the program (like clicking on the battery icon for battery status). This could also be reversed, where the OS only recognizes mouse clicks within the program but none externally (including the top status bar where the menu options, battery status, and clock are).

IF the mouse is not working inside the program and I click somewhere externally (like the battery status), this seems to temporarily fix the problem and allow clicking inside the program. However, this seems to switch the problem to where I can no longer click externally. This seems to be the only method of switching which area is selectable by mouse, as I have not found a reverse process. This forces me to close the program using Ctrl + Q instead of being able to click out, because the close button is in the top status bar. This seems to happen pretty much universally. If the program is closed, then I can again click any thing on the main screen, including the top status bar.

I am currently running the netbook without the power supply plugged in. I will repost later when the power supply is connected to see if it makes a difference. At first I thought the netbook was locked up, but the mouse still moves and if the cursor is active in a text editing area it still responds to keystrokes. It's not a disasterous bug, but it's annoying.

Ubuntu :: Firefox - Mouse Randomly Stops Clicking?

Jan 6, 2011

some windows fail to react to my mouse clicks (left and right). This has been starting to happen more and more often. However, one window usually stays working normally, while all others fail. Usually, it's the gnome-panel, but one time, this happened to Firefox. During this, I discovered that clicking a window above firefox, would go through the window, and Firefox would recieve it instead, as if the window wasn't there. Even stranger, firefox was not the active window, and all keyboard and mouse commands were received perfectly, however, the window titlebar wouldn't darken as usual. I can still move the mouse around, but when I keep it still for a minute, I see "View your Appointments and Tasks", pop-up, but it sticks to the screen afterward. A reboot fixes this problem, but only for a while. his also occurs when booting from the live Ubuntu 10.10 i386 Desktop Edition CD. I'm using a Logitech Mouse, but I don't believe this has to do with hardware, since this doesn't happen on Windows.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Mouse Randomly Stops Working Inside Applications?

Jul 10, 2011

This happens randomly after a reboot: I can move the mouse cursor and it works perfectly only on the Unity sidebar or whatever it's called. I can fire up applications, but once they're up they completely ignore any clicks or mouse movements (the main menu does not appear on the top bar if I move the cursor in the location that usually makes it appear). They only recognise a click on the close/iconize/maximize buttons.

The mouse works: as I said I can move the cursor and it recognises clicks on the sidebar and the window control buttons; plus, it's connected via a KVM switch both to the Linux box and to a Windows box (from which I'm writing this) and in Windows perfectly. The pattern used to be this: usually while running Firefox, the mouse and keyboard stop responding, and sometimes the whole desktop graphics become corrupted. I can Alt+F1 and go to a text-mode console, but nothing short of a reboot "fixes" things. After the reboot, about two times out of five everything works, three times out of five I get the situation described above.

For the last few hours or so, however, no amount of rebooting and sacrificing goats to the gods protecting sociopaths and Linux software developers have been able to restore mouse functionality. I click on my username on the login windowhere it works perfectly), enter the password and then only the Unity sidebar works: again, the mouse cursor moves, only clicks (right and left) are ignored, as are hotspots. In ubuntu classic there is no place where I can click and launch applications, btw - once I get in I'm basically blocked and can't do anything

Debian Hardware :: USB Mouse Stops Randomly

It can take a couple of hours or just a couple of minutes. The only thing I've been able to find is that it stops more often when I'm scrolling.

I have tried different mice with the same result. I recently migrated from Ubuntu where I did not have this problem so I doubt there is a hardware error.

Software :: USB Keyboard And Mouse Randomly Stop Working In Fedora 12?

Jun 17, 2010

I'm running Fedora 12 on a Shuttle SN78SH7. Updates are all current from the Fedora repositories. I'm using the Nouveau driver for the Shuttle's on-board Nvidia graphics adapter. At random intervals (1 to 5 times per day), my USB keyboard and the buttons on my USB mouse stop working and the desktop freezes (i.e. GKrellm graphical data stops updating, partially painted windows don't complete). However, I can still move the mouse pointer around the desktop. This only seems to happen when I am actually using the computer from the console. It has never happened while the system was turned on, but not being used.

When the mouse and keyboard stop working, I can log in from another computer via ssh. Once the computer gets in this state, the only way to fix things is either to reboot remotely using ssh or to cycle power. I've run low level hardware diagnostics - everything checks out OK. This computer only has USB and firewire inputs. No PS2 jacks.

I have an ASUS Zenbook UX31E with Debian testing and LXDE as a Desktop environment. I have a Logitech T630 Mouse that I connect through Bluetooth. When the mouse is paired I can use it properly but I get random keys typed in my desktop such as "1", "2" or "/".I am a regular user of Debian, and I have being using the system for several years now even worked as sysadmin for sometime. However I do not have much knowledge about Bluetooth devices management. I found no information on this issue on the internet and I do not know where too look for more info on my own system. Here is some info I got:

Code: Select all:~$ hciconfig -a hci0
hci0:   Type: BR/EDR  Bus: USB
BD Address: 74:2F:68:CC:5C:74  ACL MTU: 1022:8  SCO MTU: 183:5

I have tested "blueman-applet" and "bluedevil" as desktops applets and pairing through console gives same results, so it seems like a problem with the bluetooth communication.

Slackware :: Mouse Randomly Quits Clicking And Scrolling And Windows Freeze

Jul 20, 2011

Unfortunately, I've encountered a disaster the likes of which I've never seen before:Yesterday, in slackware 13.1, while using firefox, the window would no longer move or resize, and I could no longer click on things in that window. While this happens, the icons in xfce4 panel no longer acknowledge that the mouse is rolling over them, so I can't launch terminal from a panel, etc.; however I am still able to right click on desktop and open terminal and other apps that way.Since it was high time to upgrade to 13.37, and since I was experiencing weirdness, I decided to do a clean install: I actually repartitioned my drive, and reformatted the partitions (all xfs, and after backing up my data, of course)...

I don't know if that's significant, or not. there seems to be some lines in /var/log/Xorg.0.log about my logitech mouse.way too complicated to write by hand.I will log out and back on... sometimes that frees up other windows. Then I'll add the Xorg.0.log.
