View 2 RepliesThis is a weird one. I have Xubuntu on my computer and it shuts down when I play online games. I doesn't do so right away, but it happens randomly after some time (like 5-20min.). And any game will do the trick at some point. why and what to do about it?
View 4 Replies View Relatedwhen I start playing some medium-intense game the computer just restarts randomly. I made a lot of search on it and even tested various things. I have been having this system for about a month and the problem appeared just one week ago.I am a big fan of "Spring: TA" and that's the easiest way to reproduce the problem, by playing that game(and the most annoying). The funny thing is that when I just start the game the gpu temperature raises very fast. If after some time the pc doesn't reboot on itself the temperature just gets lower and lower. I was suspicious that the problem had to do with temperature so I made some scripts and logged the temperatures in every instant time.
View 6 Replies View RelatedEvolution for quite some time now, seems to be crashing n burning. Back when I had Karmic on, I lost a hard drive to that because it caused HD errors that became impossible to repair (at least beyond my knowledge on how-to). So I buy a new HD, and install Lucid Lynx, but the problem seems to continue...
I've been using Ubuntu on my machine dual-booting it since Jaunty.... but with Lucid I decided to drop Windows completely... I wasn't using it anyways... Ubuntu does all i need, and then some.
If only there was a fix for these random Evolution crashes... the program does not go grey, or unresponsive, it just vanishes, and I have to re-run it.
I've never seen this before, but for the past few days whatever I'm working on has had a tendency to close out with no warning. Just in the last two days evince, empathy, and eclipse have closed randomly. Since I use eclipse constantly and as a result it's been crashing the most I went ahead and started it from the command line. Here's the output I get when eclipse closes:

it appears to have something to do with the "decorator," but disabling compiz all together doesn't fix it. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit. The issue seems to have started shortly after installing a triple-core processor - but I'm not sure that's related.
I managed to actually get Xubuntu to install, the previous time! Here is what happened. Installation went smooth. Restart.Log on, start Firefox, close it, wait a few seconds, crash.Restarted, it's now in a higher res. Ok, used an xterm to install LXDE. Reboot.Log into LXDE, play around, crash.Restart, repeat, use Firefox, after a while of browsing, crash. The mouse still responds to movement though....The person this was intended for uninstalled it afterwards. (it was with Wubi) I'd like to fix this.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSo basicly I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and I am experiencing something I always experience when I install Ubuntu. I will be using a window and then when I switch to another window it will randomly crash and it takes me ages to be able to close it down, sometimes I can never close the window down. This has stopped me from being able to use any version of Ubuntu on my computer which is disappointing because I really love Ubuntu.
I have no idea how to fix this issue at all, I have downloaded drivers for Linux from the Nvidia website but I get a window saying it cant be opened, and no surprise after many efforts I can't even close that window. Its a .run file so I don't know if I have to run it via terminal? I am fed up of not being able to use Ubuntu because these windows freezing is making it unbearable to use.
I'm running Xubuntu 10.10 via USB on a Dell Latitude D505.Wireless card is a Netgear WPN111 and I'm using ndiswrapper to make it work.
My problem is this:when I open any web browser and try to navigate to a page, the whole system freezes for a few min before crashing to desktop.Using Task Manager during this time reveals that processor usage jumps to 100% and stays there until the program closes.I've tried Xubuntu on another, faster machine and it was fine.
From this I conclude that it's related to the hardware, and I think it may be some hardware protection feature operating.
Last few years (as long as I use linux) I tried several ubuntu/debian installations, on 6-7 different computers (desktops/laptops)What a notice in common on all these installations is that flash videos and games run REALLY bad.Is this a common problem for all debian based distros or I am doing something wrong? I din't give much attention in past (even if tried some repeating flashplayer installations) but last month I'm building a flash arcade site and this flash player problem become a real pain.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I play games and want to quit the system freezes and can't exit at any way. Sometimes even freezes while playing. Tried Urban Terror, Enemy Territory. 0 A.D. freezed while playing, but i was running it from terminal and in window mode so Alt+tab helped me out.
I have Ati Radeon HD5650, 4 gb ram Turion P520 in laptop.
Here's exactly what the terminal has put out at 0. AD code...
After having a lot of issues with my card on Ubuntu 9.04, I sadly, removed it an installed XP over it. (XP is better than Vista at least, which is what came with my Laptop, I'm still recovering from THAT traumatic experience.) I have an Acer Extensa 4420, which has a Radeon Xpress 1250 Graphics Card. I tried it again with Ubuntu 10.10 and am very pleased, I run Compiz/Desktop Effects just fine, everything is smooth and fast, and most applications run fine.
As of right now, there are two games which will not run properly. Tibia, and Frets on Fire. Both of these (Tibia is 2D Sprite based, Frets on Fire appears to be 3D but might be some sort of isometric 2D variant). They work, but PARTS of the screen flicker. In tibia, the "game window" is fine, runs at a constant 30fps (not bad, it's a slow card after all), but the chat window and inventory windows flicker at a random rate, but usually once or twice per second. On Frets on Fire, it's the colored dots that scroll on the screen, and the stage lights (though those might intentionally flicker, but they seem to follow the pattern of the dots so I'm gonna go with the idea that it's a problem.)
I tried FGLRX for grins, Compiz/etc. still worked but then nothing that used any type of hardware acceleration would even open, so I removed it. Are there any other drivers for the X1250? It's a legacy product, unfortunately. And as ATi is in this war with nVidia right now, with their new 6xxx cards coming out, I don't see any support for my old (it was old when the laptop was new) integrated GPU coming from them.
How can I make it work? Not looking for major 3D gaming here, but I would like those to work!
I play two online games. One uses flash (Habbo), the other java (RuneScape). With the flash one, it loads everything up until the part where it loads the interactive elements (hovering navigators, interactive chat rooms etc), then it crashes and tells me to reload. With the java one, everything loads up until the login screen, but when I actually go to log in, it just sits there and tells me it's connecting but doesn't do anything.
I've asked the support team on Habbo for assistance, but I got a reply telling me to clear my temporary files with instructions for windows machines, even though I specified I was on Ubuntu. I did what they instructed me to (which was clearing everything from my DNS cache to my temporary files), with no amazing results. Runescape was pretty much the same. I think it's something to do with my internet... I'm not really an expert at this.
It seems like it's mostly an issue with playing games. When I play certain 3D games, the audio may work for a little while, but will start getting scratching or full of static. Some times it's a lot, and other times it's just a little bit. Most times, the sound in the game will stop working after a short moment of static/scratchy sound. Then I am left with complete silence.I've seen on other posts that PCM volume may be turned up all the way. I wasn't sure what PCM was, but in the volume controls, I saw that you could adjust each individual application's volume. I assumed that this was PCM, as the game's volume was all the way up.I turned it down some, and I still got some static in the sound, and the sound still disappeared completely after a short time.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:
HTML Code:
http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:
xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude
My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

i've been experimenting with trying to run games via wine (i don't have windows to do a dual boot with), and i just recently tried to open up a dvd in vlc, and... trouble. it works, but now the player "squishes" the widescreen image into a traditional "tv screen" box. even when do it in fullscreen, it just fills the screen with black and plops the "squished" image in the middle of it. i've watched downloaded mp4 images i got off videos like this, and they look fine, but they're not widescreen images. i'm sure there's something really simple somewhere i gotta fix
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am new to linux and you guys do a great thing here.So thank you very much.I have lyme disease and cannot work so there is no way i can buy expensive software so thank you so much. I started with LMMS and audacity, then I figured jackaudio out(sort of)and started using hydrogen and ardour.I want to try other programs like rosegarden, muse, and the looping programs but I cannot find anything that explains how to use or a manual or anything,If it is in plain sight I am sorry. But if you could point me in the right direction i would be greatly happy!
Also I'm sure i am hardly, barely, not even almost reaching the full potential of Linux recording,is their anyone who9 could explain something that annoying?Sorry to be asking so much.I have been a musician and songwriter for over 20 years and due to my illness i never could quite record, but thanks to you guys my dreams are coming true!
I'm running WoW in Ubuntu 9.10 with wine. My screen's native resolution is 1920x1200. When I play WoW in Windows I set it to 1920x1080 in fullscreen because that aspect ratio allows me to see more of the playing field. In windows it doesn't stretch the screen so I have a black bar at the top and bottom of my screen.
When I set it to 1920x1080 under wine, it stretches my screen. Is there any way I can make it not stretch?
I tried searching forums/google but I couldn't find anything related to my question.
Like the title states my computer will crash when running fullscreen games and Unigine heaven 2.5 on 1920x1080. I'm using 10.10 64 bit os. I'm fairly new to Linux.
In windowed mode it runs fairly well without crashing.
I would really love to run crysis on this at some point(if you know how let me know)
My system is comprised of the following hardware...
asus M4a78lt-m MB
2 x WD Caviar Blue 500GB HDD in RAID 0
AMD X2 Athlon 3.2ghz Regor (OC'd stable at 3.75ghz)
8GB Ripjaws 1600mhz and 2GB 1333mhz super talent memory = 10gb @ 1333
Nvidia GTX460 SE 1G running a single Acer X203H 1600x900 (270.41.03 Driver)
Dual 480W PSU's
One dvd-rom
I have recently switched to Debian and got everything working great except for one thing..When I want to kill some time by playing a game (in wine or native) in fullscreen it works fine except for a big number I get in the left corner of my screen that won't go away until I close the game and open the ATI control center. This is very frustrating and quite annoying. I am using a dual monitor setup and I have tried disabling my 2nd monitor when I play a game but that still causes this problem. Also I am using the drivers I got right off the ATI website.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been getting it up and running with Xubuntu. Xubuntu 9.10 just won't install--the screen goes blank and the computer locks up, with either the regular or the alternate install CD. I gather that this isn't an unknown issue in 9.10, so I'm installing 9.04 instead and I'll just wait until 10.04 comes out. Xubuntu 9.04 installs and runs like a charm. This is an HP Pavilion ze4125, with 768MB of RAM and an ATI Radeon IGP 320M video card. When I enter "sudo su -c "lspci | grep VGA", it returns "01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility U1".
So what I want to do now is install the best driver I can so I can make the most of the video card. XP let me use any number of high resolutions, but the Display icon in Xubuntu tops out at 1024x768. EnvyNG doesn't offer. anything compatible with my video card. I've tried installing ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64 and ati-driver-installer-9-12-x86.x86_64, but both say "Extraction failed" (I was running them with gdm stopped). So, is there something specific I should be doing to get access to higher resolutions, or a driver I need to install? This is easy on my main computer, which has an NVidia card, so I can use the NVIDIA X Server Settings utility to adjust the resolution--but obviously this machine doesn't have an NVidia card.
I absolutely love Xubuntu, and I have it installed (9.10) on two laptops and one desktop pc.The only major problem: I can't play my dvds!! I've tried to open them with VLC, Totem, etc, but no luck. The icon appears, but says I'm missing some files.
View 3 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 11.04- Rhythmbox and Banshee used to work ok, but today when either started up they both promptly appear to close down. The only difference is that this morning I had pugged my iPod into the machine, though I don't know if this is relevant. I removed both programs and reinstalled them- now Rhythmbox works, but Banshee still appears and then closes down, whether or not the iPod is pugged in (now suspect this is not part of the problem).
