Ubuntu :: Xubuntu Opens Software Center Upon Login?
May 16, 2010
The problem: upon login to my machine, xubuntu opens the software center automatically. I have looked in Applications >> Settings >> XFCE4 Settings Manager >> Session and Startup >> Application Autostart, and I did not find an entrie for the software center.
My system: Xubuntu 10.04LTS This is only a minor problem because it is easy to just close it after it opens, but it is mildly annoying.

look at my text file cite will not let me put text here keeps saying it is a url. but it is not a url I have an old hp computer with 256mb memory. i updated to the linux image that has the number 17 in the generic. i can not hit esc in grub to enter an the old 14 generic. every thing come up ok with the xubuntu log in screen but when i log in the screen get swrily and set me back to the login screen. on the 14 generic i had to change the realotion to 800x600 becuse the corners were fuzzy on 1024x768. what about setting the rezaltion over a ssh. ssh -C -X parkview@xubuntu xfce4-terminal or is it something else? i did a clean install of xubuntu. i was told to do
reinitializing my XFCE configuration. Log in outside of X (press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a console login prompt or login via ssh) and then run the following commands:
mv /home/parkview/.config /home/parkview/.config.bkup
mv /home/parkview/.cache /home/parkview/.cache.bkup
that works exectp when i change the screen resalotion to 800x600. my screen doesnot like 1024x768. after i change it I cant log in any more tell i do
rm -vrf /home/parkview/.config
rm -vrf /home/parkview/.cache
but my screen is back at a crapy 1024x768. i do rm becure i already have it back up the first time. cite would not let me post code kept saying it was a url but it is not

I just installed Xubuntu 11.04 and all of a sudden I got a brown screen when I logged in that made my desktop unvisible (everything else worked fine). After a while I understood it was a problem with nautilus which I installed because I thought I needed to for Dropbox. So this is what I did and it worked:
Code:
sudo apt-get purge nautilus

I've been running xubuntu for a few weeks now, but just today I began having a few problems. When I boot my computer, it simply freezes at the xubuntu logo just before the login screen.
The last thing I remember doing before this is typing export DISPLAY=:0.0 in the tty1 terminal.

I installed Xubuntu 10.04 on my Dell laptop earlier, and all went well until I tried to finally login. A dull black screen is presented (I don't know if that's normal; I expected a pleasant splash screen haha). As a windows user, I can only explain it as looking like a command prompt. The first line asks me for my login (which is my first name). I type it in, press enter, and then it asks me for my password. The problem is, no matter what I press, nothing happens after that.

I just did a fresh install of natty, installed a few programs along with the ati catalyst control center.
I am having serious login issues, here is what I do:
I am at the login screen right from start-up, type in username and passward and hit enter, screen goes blank, it appears I am logging in, ubuntu plays a sound and puts me back at the login screen. I do not get an "Authentication Failed" error like I would expect. Unable to login as myself or as root.
However, I am able to login if I select the "safe mode," I am not able to login under the normal mode or the ubuntu classic modes.
I suspect that this issue has to do with the ati proprietary drivers, after playing with the settings for a while in safe mode I am now able to login to the normal natty mode without any apparent issues.
Here is what I changed in ati catalyst control center to boot into natty mode:
I disabled the Xinerama and Tear Free options.
Under the 3D settings, I selected the "override application setting" for all the 3D settings I could.
I believe I still have some display issues as I am unable to drag windows from one display to another, my mouse is able to move just fine across displays though.
I also found that enabling Xinerama prevented me from logging into the ubuntu and ubuntu classic modes, but I was able to login to the ubuntu with no effects mode.

When I start up my computer Xubuntu is asking me to login (which is strange as I have login disabled). Then, when I do enter my password, it is accepted and after a few screen changes I am returned to the login screen. (I know the password is correct as the login screen informs you immediately if you enter it incorrectly.) Also, I can see that my display settings have been changed--the monitor resolution is wrong--my cursor is way big as are buttons, text etc..

I had been using Xubuntu 9.10 successfully for some time. Recently, however, I tried to boot Xubuntu, and instead of reaching the login screen, a "GRUB" interface appeared. The title was "GNU GRUB VERSION 1.97~beta4"
Below that, there were a few instructions describing the use of the Tab key and a blank command line interface beginning with "sh:grub7". Before this started occurring, my computer would turn on and then display a menu to choose the OS. If I selected Xubuntu, a few lines would flash by, and the login screen would appear. My computer is a Dell XPS M1530 laptop. The operating systems installed are Windows Vista Ultimate and Xubuntu 9.10. The Xubuntu was installed using a Wubi installation.
As far as I remember, I did not make any changes that may have caused this. The only significant event that did occur was a power outage, but my computer was not plugged in nor on at this time.
If everything works normally, how would I boot Wubi Xubuntu from the GRUB interface? Are there any other solutions to this problem?

I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:
HTML Code:
http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:
xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude
My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

Is there any way to automatically close the previous file as soon as another is played?

In Lucid, I got rid of both gnome panels, and just now remembered that Rhythmbox opens to the top panel by default (at least for me), which means when I opened it I got nothing. How do I change this so that it just opens onto the desktop? I looked in edit/preferences of Rhythmbox but theres nothing in there.

I am trying to write a file to a SD card in my card reader. When Ubuntu first boots in and I open up the SD card It gives the option to create folders and files. However after a second or two the window closes and then will only let me vew the files.Does anyone know how I can fix this so that the SD card is able to be written to?The lock is not on the SD card, and under permissions it states that I have permission to create and delete files.I am using an up to date version of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04I have tried searching for a solution but cannot find anything relevant that works

I've just allowed Ghostery to update to version 2.3. Now every time I open my browser (Firefox), a Ghostery tab opens after my homepage tab opens. How do/can I prevent this (the opening of a Ghostery tab in Firefox) from happening?
Edit: what is popping up is a "Ghostery Configuration Walkthrough", a setup wizard. I've looked on the Ghostery forum; some are seeking ways to get around this wizard; but, so far, no answers. A Google search didn't produce anything either. So, I guess I'll run the wizard and see what happens; even though there are no settings that I would change.

We have tried uninstalling K3B and the system is ok. But when you install K3B the problem comes back.

I have a win7 laptop and installed a dual-boot ubuntu 10.10. I'm using firefox & thunderbird, shared between windows and ubuntu (default profiles are on a fat32 disk that is shared between the two OSs). I can mount the fat32 disk as usual, but I can't get firefox OR thunderbird to start unless I start them from a terminal using 'sudo'. This is kinda strange. I used to do this all the time and never had a problem before.
I installed firefox, then did:
cd /etc/firefox
sudo firefox -P
in the profile manager, I set the profile file etc, but when I open firefox without doing 'sudo firefox', it hangs up and cannot find the profile. Why do I have to use 'sudo' to open firefox or thunderbird?
It works fine on my other laptop, but I've deleted & reinstalled ubuntu 3 times on this laptop and still have the same problem.

When I open 'firefox' from the app panel at the top of the screen, it opens on the last web site visited.
I've looked every place I can think to tell it to open in a blank screen. My preferences are set to blank. Right click on the icon > properties shows 'firefox %u'.
Is there something in 'about:config' that would control this and what do I search for?
