Jun 10, 2011If Skype is already running, pressing its shortcut starts a new sequence rather than opening the one already running. Is there a way to change it?

Feb 27, 2010As far as i know VLC is the best media player for linux bc it suppurts all file types. But there is one anoying problem - when i want to listen to song it opens VLC, but when i open another song it opens another new VLC window. And this problemug or whatever didnt apear in Windows version VLC player.

Aug 12, 2010I recently bought a IOgear USB bluetooth adapter and a Sony DRBT101/BLK bluetooth headphones to use with my computer.Whenever I try to make a call using these headphones with skype, I can speak for say 10 seconds and then the headset disconnects completely from the system. I then have to reconnect the headset by switching it off and on. I do not have this problem listening to music using A2DP. It works fine with my mobile phone.When I change the profile to Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP), it shows up as hands free, I thought it should be headset in blueman manager. My friend uses Plantronics headset with is Dell laptop with built in bluetooth and he says his comes up as headset not hands free. Could this be causing the problem?

Jun 9, 2011I just recently purchased a 3g dongle for my netbook. Everything seems to be working fine until I discovered this strange problem. I cant seem to text via skype, it doesnt go through. I testet the skype test call service and voice works fine, audio and mic. I have tried to google and search forums but no luck. I have before used skype on my netbook with my cellphone as a hot spot and it worked without problem but it doesnt have the same provider - different sim cards in phone and dongle.

The main appeal of linux to me is being able to choose which window manager, which desktop environment etc are used but I cannot seem to find out how to configure these things.I've been googling extensively and looking in books, the forums, ubuntu community and documentation but this information does not seem to be out there.

Sep 11, 2010I'm new to this. The VIDEO_TS folder has a bunch of VOB files sequentially names along with BUP and IFO files. But when I start up VLC and choose 'Open Dir' and point to the VIDEO_TS file, it plays a short trailer of the movie and does not move onto the rest of the VOB files. Is there a was to play them sequentially? or is the only way to select the files in the order in which to play them and then play them all?

Dec 15, 2010I have downloaded & installed the skype beta release for linux (now ancient?) on my newly build fedora 14 (64) box.
Under fedora 12, I made this work after several hours of mucking around by installing old libraries for 32 bit code in /lib and /usr/lib - as I got an error, I found the library and put it in place. This was painful and the WRONG way to do things - I should have been using yum!
It remains a shame that the Skype release for Linux is so old, but that is life.
Can anyone list the libraries needed (prefer yum names if possible) to make this work?
I can do this again the hard way and list the results for others (should have saved for myself, but I never dreamed that a newer Skype release would take so long) , but I am sure many folks have this working already. I am surprised there is no "yum install skype---" command.
Ubuntu Installation :: Upsplash Startup Sequence After Upgrade To 10.04
May 8, 2010Having upgraded to 10.04 seemingly without any problems as everything looks to be working so far. The only strange thing I have noticed so far is the new startup upsplash. After the BIOS startup I get approx, 25 seconds of blank screen then the new upsplash which is a multicoloured and very indistinct UBUNTU with what looks like DVD/CD control symbols below. After this I get the new purple Ubuntu screen and then the login screen. Total time approx.46 seconds. I also get the same indistinct UBUNTU when closing down. Is this the correct startup sequence for 10.04 and is any else seeing this strange multicoloured indistinct UBUNTU screen. Is it my system/config at fault or is this the norm?

Hard drive light illuminates once then stays off. External HDD powers on. Processor light comes on but no graphics - no manufacturer stuff, no bios entry - nothing.

Sep 1, 2011I am attempting to boot Ubuntu off of a USB drive. The USB drive was created via the USB creator in the .iso file dowloaded from Ubuntu. But for some reason when I go into my BIOS and boot from the USB drive, it spits out one line of syslinux and copyright information ending in "et al" and then a flashing cursor but doesn't go any further. I would provide a screenshot but that isnt an option at the moment with not being able to get past the first line of booting. Also, I have never used Ubuntu as this is my first attempt at running it and it is obviously not going the best.

grep -r ^[a-z] *|grep .....
to do a recursive search to find all files that had lines starting with lower case a to z.
If I try that under FC12 (this is a newish install), it also finds uppercase A to Z.
Is there a collating type sequence or locale that I have incorrectly set?
PS just for info, the following shows the problem:

ie the whole range matching seems a bit 'screwy'. A-z should give x01-x58 so A-z should be be valid and include a couple of spcial chars - but gives a range error. On the other hand, a-Z should pose a problem as that's a backward range - but that seems to search ok.
Does any one else get this in FC12 (I've just tried in RH EL5 and grep ^[a-z] ... works fine)? My locale is:

Jan 6, 2011Why is the Linux boot sequence is organized the way it is?Power on + BIOS runs hardware initialisation and self tests, LILO/GRUB etc... but why is it organised the way it is?Would I be right saying it is primarily for debugging purposes?
