Ubuntu :: Xubuntu Laptop Goes Back Into Hibernate Just After Waking Up?
May 23, 2011
My AspireOne with Xubuntu 11.04 goes back to hibernate just after I hit a key to wake it up. I recorded a video of the problem, but this forum won't allow me to post the link. I guess you can PM if you want to watch the problem.
The trouble started immediately after I followed the instructions to test out Unity. I was going to post the link, but again, noobs like me can't do that.

Upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 recently. (Now that was a mistake...) Problem occurring now that when I close lid of my laptop (Asus K40IN series) , which I set to suspend, it won't wake up (and I have to shut down and reboot). It used to be fine (in both Windows and 10.04) though so must've something to do with the upgrade to 10.10.

I am having problems with my wuxga 1900x1200 laptop display. The machine is a Dell inspiron 8600 with nvidia chipset.I am running driver 175 from the Karmic repo. My problem is when the machine wakes up after a suspend, the display blooms to bright white. The only way I have found to recover is power off the machine. After a bit of research I suspect it may be the refresh rates in xorg.conf, but lowering the values has not changed anything. Here is what I have currently.
Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder75) Wed Jan 27 03:02:48 PST 2010[code]....
orig values were horiz 30-128 and vert 50-90.I'm not sure it's the refresh...

Xubuntu 11.04 is skinned to how Canonical felt it would be best, now I do like it, but I was wondering if there is a way to get XFCE to the way it actually looks by removing all skinning?

I think it might have to do with an app I installed called Jupiter (http://sourceforge.net/projects/jupiter/) that missed with my power configs, I removed it but I still can't hibernate or suspend. Whenever I try to do either, my screen fades to black and nothing happens. If I move the mouse or touch the keyboard, it comes back.

After installing Ubuntu Tweaks (that's about all I remember changing) the cursor disappears whenever I hibernate or suspend the laptop. I am running 10.04.1 and have compiz running but changing to less effects seems to have no effect on this problem. when I have no cursor the only thing I can do is restart and it reappears and does fine until I suspend or hibernate. Some hours later - I just found the setting that caused this. The tweak has a box that was clicked to disable the touchpad while typing. This caused the blank cursor when awakened. working now. This shouldn't happen, but I guess this is one to leave alone. Here we go again. cursor disappears after suspend.

When I close the lid of my laptop and open it after some time I am greeted with a message "Failed to suspend". When I tried to manually suspend/hibernate, I saw these options are not available there at all. Of course, they did exist when I did the fresh installation but I cant see them anymore. I am totally pissed off with this.

I just installed xubuntu-desktop on my Ubuntu 9.10 desktop, just to have the option of using xfce ( I did the same with Kubuntu - kde). I have noticed that the Xubuntu splash screen now comes up rather the the Ubuntu default splash screen.
I tried to use Start-Up Manager to changed back to Ubuntu but Xubuntu xsplash screen ( one with the fire flies ) still comes up. Is their any way to change this back to the Ubuntu Splash Screen without the Xubuntu screne coming up at all ??

My Thinkpad T61 just got a Corsair X256 SSD in the ultrabay (where the CD usually is). This works well except for hibernating. Earlier I had a traditional HDD drive there which also hibernates just fine. After a failed hibernate the machine hangs with this message on screen:
ata1.00: status: { DRDY ERR }
ata1.00: error: { IDNF }
ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0

And looking in the kern.log I see this:

When I start up my computer Xubuntu is asking me to login (which is strange as I have login disabled). Then, when I do enter my password, it is accepted and after a few screen changes I am returned to the login screen. (I know the password is correct as the login screen informs you immediately if you enter it incorrectly.) Also, I can see that my display settings have been changed--the monitor resolution is wrong--my cursor is way big as are buttons, text etc..

Installed openSUSE into my Thinkpad T410 and noticed that when I closed the laptop lid, the moon icon does not light up.
Reopening the lid and will see a screensaver password screen immediately.
Does this means that the laptop does not have Sleep (or is it called hibernate) mode enable? How can I enable it?
This also happens with Debian that this laptop is dual booted with.

i just got my xubuntu , and i'm pretty satisfied with it , i mean : it works ok for my very old system (512mb ram , integrated video card , pentium4 procesor 478 2.8 ghz) forced to use it , because i had to take my motherboard to warranty .... anyway , i just wanted to know how can i connect my pc ( xubuntu ) with another laptop ( i would like to have file transfer , and why not control over the desktop from my laptop , or control my laptop from my pc , i think it is called remote desktop ) . My network connection is through a modem , that is connected to a router from which goes a lan cable to my pc (xubuntu ) and my laptop is wireless connected to the router . My laptop is using windows 7.

Recently my F14 x86_64 powered laptop started to present some bad behavior: it can not longer hibernate.
In order to "exercise" the laptop's battery, sometimes I let the machine run until the power goes off, but I learned that Fedora has an elegant solution: it puts the laptop to hibernate. However recently, perhaps after I installed the Catalyst driver (which is working fine BTW), when it tries to hibernate an error message is displayed saying something about "not enough swap".
I read somewhere that in some scenarios swap memory is no longer important for system's performance, that's why I created only a 1.1GB swap partition, which does not match the RAM (3GB) and I wouldn't think it should...
What can I do here in order for the laptop to hibernate again? Is the Catalyst driver the one with a problem, or should I expand the swap space for it to match the installed RAM? A workaround perhaps?

So I took my laptop to Best Buy to get my screen replaced and I just got it back today. I loaded the computer up and instantly tried to load my WUBI installation. It brings up the error screen talking about no wubibuilder (this is a normal occurrence that I'm not worried about, it was doing that before I took it, and it would just load past it) BUT NOW it instantly restarts the computer and brings up GRUB again. I can load into my Windows 7 Installation successfully.
I'm wondering if Best Buy reset the timeout when they were doing the dignostics and if so, how would I increase it?

So I just recently switched to Ubuntu because my computer's hard drive with windows died. When I bought a new hard drive, it was just easier to use Ubuntu. Anyway, I really like the operating system so far, and have had no problems except for one: When I close the screen on my laptop, the screen won't come back on when I open it. The buttons on my keyboard light up and everything like they should, but the screen stays black. I have tried doing Ctrl + Alt + F keys with no luck. I am very new to Ubuntu so please go slowly. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 on an HP Pavilion Dv4 laptop.

I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:
HTML Code:
http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:
xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude
My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

Laptop only has external display. When karmic boots 2.6.31-21 and initrd.img has finished loading, and I have taken quiet splash out of boot line, I get nothing on the external display until gnome come up. Does the kernel driver only recognise internal displays until X takes over, or is there something wrong with the karmic 855GM kernel driver?
