I am Using HP Pavilion DV6Z. Just started using Linux today, so I just close LID like usual, thinking that I just open back the lid and Ubuntu will wake up but it doesn't, screen are black, but laptop still running
View 2 RepliesAll I want to do is to be able to shut the lid on my laptop, have it go into suspend like it already does, but upon opening it again, successfully start up again. It'll sleep just fine, but if you close the lid and try to open it again later, the lights will indicate it is starting up, but the screen won't initialize, and I am left with a blank, black screen.I've tried a line of code to enter into my menu.lst file, and it seemed like it should work, but it borked my computer and I had to manually reinstate the line of code it had before.

I must confess I didn't see any setting in the BIOS that directly referred to WoL, but I enabled something and hoped it should be right. Is this the problem? Is there any way to check if the hardware supports WoL other than looking through the BIOS?
This is a new issue since 10.04 (9.10 did it right). I'm on 10.10 netbook right now. What I would like to figure out is how to tell the system to go into suspend when idle even though the lid is open. I don't know if this problem is hardware specific or just a config file edit. Just to get it out of the way, it does suspend correctly when the lid is closed - and I can tell it to suspend when the lid is open, but what I need is for it to suspend when I fall asleep working or forget I left it open without overheating / running out of battery and losing my work. I'm pretty good at doing things on linux, despite the fact that I'm running the netbook remix, so don't be afraid to tell me to open a file in the terminal or whatever.

For some reason this one is troubled. I can put into sleep with "pm-suspend" or "pm-hibernate" but the thing is that my laptop never wakes up. I endup restarting.

My laptop won't wake from sleep. I hit the powerbutton and it'll blink a few more times, turn green and the keys will light up but the screen stays black.

i have windows 7 & ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop...and boot into win 7 im able to enable wake on lan on the nic. so my questions is if i enable WOL thru windows 7 when it boots up will it boot the win 7 or ubuntu? when i press the power button it automatically boots up ubuntu. im jus wonderin cuz it looks a lil easier to enable wol thur windows cuz i just gota check a box

But when I wake on lan turn it on, it doesn't power off. It hangs on a black screen where the fan and the hard drive seem to be off, but the ethernet light is on and so are all the computer lights.

I know that the video driver is the key to getting it working properly in Windows, I can get the exact name of the driver if needed but I do know it is nVidia.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just a had laptop meltdown which resulted in the acquisition of a replacement (HP635) sporting a realtek wireless NIC. Found the drivers and installed them and all is well. HOWEVER, the card is not activated on wake from sleep mode. This is kind of astounding to me. Every crappy windows version that I've used can handle this situation. Many searches, however have failed to yield any help. After every resume from sleep mode I have to run ifup to start wlan0. Surely this is not the only way it can be? I have to assume that I'm not getting something simple, and someone here can point out my failing. or if you can just sympathize. running 11.4 here using the realtek 8192 driver set to start at boot time. Though none of the other settings have had any effect on this problem.

So I took my laptop to Best Buy to get my screen replaced and I just got it back today. I loaded the computer up and instantly tried to load my WUBI installation. It brings up the error screen talking about no wubibuilder (this is a normal occurrence that I'm not worried about, it was doing that before I took it, and it would just load past it) BUT NOW it instantly restarts the computer and brings up GRUB again. I can load into my Windows 7 Installation successfully.
I'm wondering if Best Buy reset the timeout when they were doing the dignostics and if so, how would I increase it?
So I just recently switched to Ubuntu because my computer's hard drive with windows died. When I bought a new hard drive, it was just easier to use Ubuntu. Anyway, I really like the operating system so far, and have had no problems except for one: When I close the screen on my laptop, the screen won't come back on when I open it. The buttons on my keyboard light up and everything like they should, but the screen stays black. I have tried doing Ctrl + Alt + F keys with no luck. I am very new to Ubuntu so please go slowly. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 on an HP Pavilion Dv4 laptop.

The trouble started immediately after I followed the instructions to test out Unity. I was going to post the link, but again, noobs like me can't do that.
Laptop only has external display. When karmic boots 2.6.31-21 and initrd.img has finished loading, and I have taken quiet splash out of boot line, I get nothing on the external display until gnome come up. Does the kernel driver only recognise internal displays until X takes over, or is there something wrong with the karmic 855GM kernel driver?

I am wanting to ssh into my Linux box from my laptop (Mac) and play the arsenal of music I have stored on the Linux box back to the laptop locally. I hear of people ssh-ing from work and playing music from home all the time. I have googled for days relentlessly with no way of getting the music to play back to my laptop.
1. I would like to be able to do this outside my LAN. 2. Inside my LAN, I can only seem to get the songs to play on the server. It seems there is a way to forward the sound via ssh somehow. I haven't figured it out yet.
My power settings is set to put the laptop screen to sleep after some minutes of inactivity. This works fine, however it doesn't want to come back to life if I move the mouse, type etc...

put pc in suspend and went out, on returning home started pc via on/off switch instead of pressing space bar (any key) hey presto Ubuntu woke up no problem
I want to run a script on wake but it doesn't look like /etc/acpi/resume.d exists in Lucid. I tried creating it anyway, but I didn't have any luck. Is this because HAL has been removed? Is there a new method in Lucid?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my old HP Pavilion desktop to 11.04 a few weeks ago and at first things were fine, but recently the PC refuses to wake up in the morning. I assume it's going in to sleep mode overnight, but no matter what I push on the mouse or keyboard it won't wake up. I have set both the PC and screen in Power Management Preferences to Never go to sleep, but it doesn't seem to matter and it sleeps regardless. how I can either make it not sleep, or sleep a little lighter so it wakes up without a hard reboot?

I managed to delete the Volume Applet that appears by default on the task bar. I'm sure it used to be listed in 'Add to Panel' in other version of Ubuntu however I can't see it there in 10.04.

I have made a virtual machine on my server using virt-manager that I access using virt-viewer from my desktop/laptop. Currently I am having to leave the VM on all the time. Which is a waste of cpu/ram etc. Ideally I would like to be able to wake the vm up from virt-viewer or from a bash script being ran on my desktop.
