Ubuntu :: Mono Fails To Install / Uninstall - Start Fresh?
Jan 13, 2011Specifically, libgtk2.0-cil, seems to be giving me a world of trouble.
I tried to install mono so that I could use an application. When it went to install libgtk2.0-cil, everything broke. I've tried to reinstall, purge, remove, and each time it fails. I've gone through a few iterations of trying to get things to remove cleanly to start fresh, so there are a few packages that are dependent on libgtk2.0-cil causing issues as well.. but thats to be expected. code...
I tried, and cannot locate the files it notes; `/usr/share/cli-common/packages.d/policy.2.6.gtk-dotnet.installcligac. I tried to create them real quick with touch, it removes what I make but still does not uninstall and still gives the err.
Can anyone offer assistance on removing this so that I can start fresh?
General :: Xorg Fails To Start Under Ubuntu?
May 13, 2010I'm running desktop Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell laptop. Previously it was Ubuntu 9.04. After some period of time (lets say 3-4 months) my X fails to start automatically after some restart calls. If that takes place my network manager applet doesn't start either (after I do startx).
I get a perfect server boot meaning there's no Xorg started. Command line interface is all I get starting from login and further.
Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh Install Fails On Boot?
Sep 13, 2010Recently freshly reinstalled ubuntu 10.04 on a new / blank hard drive and it now crashes on startup. Quick version: I have a nvidia Quadro NVS 295, it gets to the point just after the bios with the flashing dash, seemingly tries to init xserver / gdm then crashes. Keyboard lights go off but the pc stays on, and just sits there with the monitor in power saving mode. Tried in recovery mode, the blue / grey ascii terminal thing pops up for less then a second then the display crashes in the same way.
Swapping with an ATI card borrowed from elsewhere, the new install will boot quite happily. Anyone know how I can get 10.04 to boot with a nvidia quadro NVS 295? Its a bog standard card and my version of 10.04 I upgraded to on my old hard drive works fine. ts a reasonably new dell XPS 64bit pc.
Longer version:
I run 3 monitors using a PCI-e x16 NVS 295 and a PCI NVS 295. This worked great under 9.10 and 10.04. Boss gave me a solid state HD so trying to install 10.04 on that. However on my first install attempt the live CD failed to load (same problem as above, gets to init'ing the display and crashes with no output). I removed the second PCI card to run with just the 1 PCI-e x16 nvidia card, this time the live CD worked fine and I could install, but I am stuck on the boot problem. Booted into the system using the ATI card and did an update just incase something may have changes / been fixed but the issue persists.
Fedora :: GRUB Fails On Fresh Install?
Jun 18, 2011I'm trying to install FC15 x64, the install goes smooth and reports no errors, I looked around in /tmp/anaconda.log but couldn't see any relevant errors either, basically after rebooting and trying to boot my new install, I get:

I've reinstalled 3 times now, first I was using USB, but now have tried with CD too. All I want is for GRUB to be installed on /dev/sda2 which is where my install is, and which is also the default location where the installer supposedly installs it to. I've also tried unplugging my other hard disks, and installing with just the first drive.
Ubuntu :: Fresh Install Of 8.10 \ Restart The Computer It Fails To Load?
Oct 14, 2010I am having problems with getting the drivers to work for a geforce 9500gt.To get started Im working with a fresh install of 8.10, and I have successfully installed the driver package for this card from nvidia's site, version 260.The problem comes after I restart the computer. It fails to load. I am able to install the driver and start X and it works greatI can even restart x and it still works. but as soon as I restart the computer it doesn't load. I then need to reinstall the driver. I am curious if anyone has an idea of whats wrong here? I am wondering if it's a possible xorg.conf problem so I will post that below.

Fedora Installation :: F13 Fresh Install From HDD Fails With Db_version_mismatch
Jun 7, 2010I'm currently running F11 and am trying to replace it with a fresh install of F13, using the same partitioning layout. I downloaded the F13 i386 DVD ISO using bit torrent. (The sha256sum of my downloaded ISO matches the reference sha256sum value.) I'm trying to do the fresh install of this ISO from hard drive (without burning a DVD). Last summer I did the same procedure of installing a downloaded DVD ISO from HDD when replacing F9 with F11. The installer (Anaconda 13.42) proceeds to the point where I specify my custom partitioning layout. It then prompts me about storing a boot loader. Shortly after I reply to that, the installer gets an "unhandled exception".

The only nonstandard thing I did was the following. According to the F13 installation guide, for installation from HDD the file "install.img" from within the ISO files must be copied to a directory named "images". The F13 installation guide gives the following procedure:
mount -t iso9660 /path/to/Fedora13.iso /mnt/point -o loop,ro
cp -pr /mnt/point/images /path/images/
umount /mnt/point
Instead, I used "Archive Manager" to extract "install.img" from my DVD ISO. I copied it to a directory named "images".

Mar 22, 2010The last version a Linux I had was Mandrake v9.1. However, in looking to get the latest/greatest Linux I downloaded Ubuntu and Kubuntu. After installing Kubuntu the system reboots and fails to boot into the OS. After the P.O.S.T all I get a the word "GRUB". There is no response to any keys with the exception of Ctrl-Alt-Del. I am temporarily able to get passed the boot problem if I boot from the CD and choose boot from primary hard menu option. I'm not sure how to fix the boot up problem and could use some advice. However, using the CD to boot up the hard drives installation leads me to my next problem.
While in a desktop session I am unable to drag windows by their title bar. When attempting to drag a window, the desktop becomes covered with parts of the original window spreading all over the screen in multiple directions. It looks like a kaleidoscope or bad acid trip image. I suspect the video anomalies might be configuration related or improper driver. Again guidance would be greatly appreciated here.
I have a good 'ole Matrox MGA Millenium card installed into a P4 1.8ghz system, with 512 MB ram. The hard drive originally had an old install of Mandrake v9.1, but all of the partitions were wiped and I created 3 new partitions:
- /dev/sda1 20GB Bootable/Primary Partition EXT4 (Unbuntu mounted at /)
- /dev/sda2 18GB Primary EXT4 (Kubuntu mounted at /mnt/Ubuntu_dsktop_91)
- /dev/sda3 2GB Swap space
My intent was to install Ubuntu on the 2nd primary partition and be able to switch between them. However, I tried installed Ubuntu on the first partition (reformatted of course) and I encounter the same boot problem and display problem.
Fedora Installation :: X Doesn't Start On Fresh Install (x64)
Jul 31, 2009I just downloaded the F11 x64 DVD iso, and I when I try to install it, after the media check screen, Anaconda starts it load, but it says "X failed to start, falling back to text mode" (or something like that).
The install goes through (in text mode), and all that gets installed is the basic environment.
My specs:
- AMD X2 Phenom II 550 Callisto
- 4gb DDR2 800 memory
- 1tb Samsung SATA / 100gb Western Digital SATA
- 2x XFX Geforce 9600gt 1gb
- ASRock K10N780SLIX3-WIFI motherboard
I've tried Ubuntu x86 on the same system, but I was having issues with it, so I decided to try FC11 instead.

Debian Installation :: Fresh Jessie Install - Cinnamon Can't Start
Sep 17, 2014I recently have started playing with various distros (Mostly just Zorin and Debian) and have been trying to find a GUI I can actually comfortably use without wanting to punch my screen. This lead me to cinnamon which looks like something I could actually use.
I performed a fresh installation of Debian Jessie without the desktop environment and print server (System Utilities or whatever that option is called was left checked) and after the system installed and booted I proceeded to login as the root and install cinnamon. Unfortunately afterwards my system would be nothing but a black screen with a box saying that cinnamon had crashed and was running in fallback mode.
However if I let a fresh installation install the default GUI of xfce and then perform the cinnamon installation, cinnamon will install and run. My question is why doesn't a clean install with cinnamon work but installing cinnamon after another gui does? I don't get any apparent error messages beyond cinnamon crashing and I'm still fairly new to Linux.

Aug 15, 2011this evening I updated my 11.4 via KpackageKit then logged out when I did Xorg died and I was dumped on the text console.
Looking in the logs I see

Unfortunately I didn't check the update list too closely. The above seems to indicate that an Xorg component was updated but the kernel module wasn't.
OpenSUSE Install :: Fresh Install Of 11.3 Won't Start
Aug 20, 2010I downloaded the iso from the webpage and used the live cd option. From there I chose install and proceeded to install the OS. Everything went fine and I got a message that the system would need to restart without the live cd. I saw the chameleon with the white growing line under (which seemed to run to it's completion) and then I came to a screen mostly white with three option buttons in the bottom right corner and my mouse with the waiting symbol spinning in the middle of the screen. Basicly the symbols stops spinning after a little while and the system hangs. I have tried starting in fail safe mode and run level 3 with the same result. My laptop is a MSI GX740
Edit: I have tried both ubuntu and mint earlier today and those Live CDs wouldn't even start. Also I am using the CD size Gnome ISO. Maybe some of the content on the dvd iso would provide support for my HW?

CentOS 5 :: X Server Fails To Start On New Install (Toshiba Laptop)?
Jul 6, 2009I have a Toshiba A205 S5804 laptop that had Vista Home Premium installed. Tried to install Centos 5 (2.6.18-8-el5) and when I went through the install process, X Server failed to start so I had to go thorough the command line install. Once the install completed, it only booted to console.
The default resolution for this laptop is 1280X800 but I dont know if that is why or not. if anyone has a clue about my issue, please let me know.. I really dont want to install windows.
Ubuntu :: Xinerama Now Fails Due To Xorg Update In 10.04?
Apr 29, 2010I have 3 monitors across 2 video cards, thusly I must use Xinerama (And xserver-xgl for compiz of course, but that's another story and regardless of this issue) in order to combine all three monitors into one large session.
The issue is that, on 10.04 due to an update to xorg which has a regression, moving my mouse across to the left monitor causes it to flicker back and forth between the left and center monitor (While also freezing the rest of the display), and it eventually crashes xorg shortly after. This bug has been reported [URL] and has been open since Ubuntu 10.04 alpha, but perhaps there is some workaround here as this is a make-or-break thing for me. If I can't get this working, it's back to Windows...

Jun 7, 2011My PC running 11.04 was showing a blank screen after every 10 mins while watching BBC iplayer (with all the screensaver and power saver settings switched to over 1 hour). The picture returned when I moved the mouse but it was still annoying.
So I googled for a solution and found this page [URL]. Based on this, I did the following in terminal:
"sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf"
Then when the text editor came up, I deleted 'EndSection' from the xorg.conf file, and added the following lines:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "blank time" "0"
Option "standby time" "0"
Option "suspend time" "0"
Option "off time" "0"
EndSection
My problem: upon rebooting the computer, I just got a purple screen with the Ubuntu logo, it went no further. I tried booting with the livecd and removing the lines I added, but it wouldn't let me save the file. I also tried booting into recovery mode but I'm not very adept at the command line navigation stuff, so I don't know how to find or re-edit the file.

Starting xorg by using 'startx' fails. How I can get back to normal with normal resolution?At the moment I am logged in via live cd. Let me know if any log files needed (if I can locate those).

Cannot find module "fbdev" (module does not exist)
It looked like I have to recompile the whole X package,but I don't know how to recompile the package as well on which package to recompile.

May 3, 2011I installed openSUSE today using a network installer cd, opting for the Xfce environment. Everything went smooth with the installer, but I have some issues with the network. After the fresh install, nm-applet did not start. I got the following error:

Fortunately I used Archlinux for a quite long time and I know how to connect to WPA2 encrypted wireless network from command line, so I was able to connect to the internet and do an upgrade - everything went just smooth and fine again.
After the update and restart, I found the nm-applet icon in the system tray. And here comes the second problem: I can connect with the nm-applet, but the connection does lasts only for about 10 seconds. So practically I can't use the net this way either. Ok, no problem, I fired up Yast, disabled the networkmanager and choose to start my network with the traditional method. I entered the required stuff from my wireless card ( ESSID and passwd ), set to activate at boot time and reboot.....

Feb 16, 2010A few days ago I ditched the user friendly world of Ubuntu and installed Debian Squeeze amd64 (testing) over it. I did not install the suggested Gnome 'X desktop' in favour of booting to the terminal and starting X once logged in as a user.
Everything was fine except for the fact Xvesa was used instead of Xorg as the system did not have the required Fglrx driver. I'm using an Acer ASPIRE 5536 with an ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics stuffed in it, which certainly beats intel GMA.
Unfortunately the drivers for it are proprietary.
On Ubuntu this was automatically detected and I was asked if I wanted to sell my soul and enable the restricted drivers. On debian however I have to download a shell-script of the ATI website to install the fglrx module.
Following this guide I downloaded the correct file (Under motherboard/something) and ran it as root.
I couldn't run it with any --buildpky Debian/XXX option, they all failed.

Slackware :: Xorg Suddenly Won't Start (EE) Ioctl EVIOCGNAME Failed
Sep 24, 2010This morning I logged in and typed startx. My box said:
(EE) ioctl EVIOCGNAME failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
(EE) PreInit returned NULL for "Mouse1"
Since I have two computers, basically identical, I looked up stuff on one and I decided to upgrade the problem box to 13.1 from 13.0 since that would undoubtedly fix the problem. Well, the problem is the same. However, root can startx just fine. Also, gpm seems to work fine for the user.
