General :: Xorg Fails To Start Under Ubuntu?
May 13, 2010
I'm running desktop Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell laptop. Previously it was Ubuntu 9.04. After some period of time (lets say 3-4 months) my X fails to start automatically after some restart calls. If that takes place my network manager applet doesn't start either (after I do startx).
I get a perfect server boot meaning there's no Xorg started. Command line interface is all I get starting from login and further.

I want to run some xulrunner based program on EC2 - it will run automatically but it needs some display as far as I understand. That probably requires X11 with some dummy screen driver.

I have 3 monitors across 2 video cards, thusly I must use Xinerama (And xserver-xgl for compiz of course, but that's another story and regardless of this issue) in order to combine all three monitors into one large session.
The issue is that, on 10.04 due to an update to xorg which has a regression, moving my mouse across to the left monitor causes it to flicker back and forth between the left and center monitor (While also freezing the rest of the display), and it eventually crashes xorg shortly after. This bug has been reported [URL] and has been open since Ubuntu 10.04 alpha, but perhaps there is some workaround here as this is a make-or-break thing for me. If I can't get this working, it's back to Windows...

My computer has become quite strange the last days, last week grub stopped working and just halted at the grub prompt.
I can manually start the system by writing
insmod /boot/grub/linux.mod
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro
initrd /initrd.img
boot
[Code].....
Note:
The system is a Ubuntu 10.04 based system on a old HP laptop.

Running RHEL 5.4 on a HP server. Ran into a issue today where ldap was working fine then was informed it was failing. During the troubleshooting process, I found out that the ldap service failed to start up. See error below:
/sbin/runuser: /usr/sbin/slaptest: Permission denied
I checked the permissions of the ldap.conf and slapd.conf files and they appeared to be correct. Any ideas why ldap will not start up?

It then finished the installation.

In principle my java installation works perfect now I tried to increase priority with nice. So I put special user rights to nice:
chmod u+s /usr/bin/nice
And then tried:
nice -n -20 java something
but this gives me the error that libjli.so is missing.

My PC running 11.04 was showing a blank screen after every 10 mins while watching BBC iplayer (with all the screensaver and power saver settings switched to over 1 hour). The picture returned when I moved the mouse but it was still annoying.
So I googled for a solution and found this page [URL]. Based on this, I did the following in terminal:
"sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf"
Then when the text editor came up, I deleted 'EndSection' from the xorg.conf file, and added the following lines:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "blank time" "0"
Option "standby time" "0"
Option "suspend time" "0"
Option "off time" "0"
EndSection
My problem: upon rebooting the computer, I just got a purple screen with the Ubuntu logo, it went no further. I tried booting with the livecd and removing the lines I added, but it wouldn't let me save the file. I also tried booting into recovery mode but I'm not very adept at the command line navigation stuff, so I don't know how to find or re-edit the file.

Last night my system rebooted and dropped screen resolution to 800*600. I was unable to change that from no where. I tried to install nvidia driver and now no gui, only command line. Starting xorg by using 'startx' fails. How I can get back to normal with normal resolution? At the moment I am logged in via live cd. Let me know if any log files needed (if I can locate those).

this evening I updated my 11.4 via KpackageKit then logged out when I did Xorg died and I was dumped on the text console.
Looking in the logs I see

Aug 15 17:59:49 linux-vg3v kernel: [22090.925299] NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 275.21, but

Unfortunately I didn't check the update list too closely. The above seems to indicate that an Xorg component was updated but the kernel module wasn't.

I'm using slackware-current and I followed the instructions on how to upgrade the xorg-server from 1.7.7 to 1.8.1.
But when I tried to start X, there's the error:
Cannot find module "intel" (module requirement mismatch)
Cannot find module "vesa" (module requirement mismatch)
Cannot find module "fbdev" (module does not exist)
It looked like I have to recompile the whole X package, but I don't know how to recompile the package as well on which package to recompile.

My hp does not want to start X for some reason. I have so many errors. I made an account to just see this problem be fixed. Now when I type "startx" I get back, "bash: /usr/bin/startx no such file in directory". I have to use GRUB due to the fact I forgot my login. Although, I do remember my password.

A few days ago I ditched the user friendly world of Ubuntu and installed Debian Squeeze amd64 (testing) over it. I did not install the suggested Gnome 'X desktop' in favour of booting to the terminal and starting X once logged in as a user.
Everything was fine except for the fact Xvesa was used instead of Xorg as the system did not have the required Fglrx driver. I'm using an Acer ASPIRE 5536 with an ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics stuffed in it, which certainly beats intel GMA.
Unfortunately the drivers for it are proprietary.
On Ubuntu this was automatically detected and I was asked if I wanted to sell my soul and enable the restricted drivers. On debian however I have to download a shell-script of the ATI website to install the fglrx module.
Following this guide I downloaded the correct file (Under motherboard/something) and ran it as root.
I couldn't run it with any --buildpky Debian/XXX option, they all failed.
Code:
==================================================
ATI Technologies Linux Driver Installer/Packager
==================================================
Generating package: Debian/testing
cp: cannot stat `/root/fglrx-install.tCX8nC/x710_64a/*': No such file or directory
Package build failed!

This morning I logged in and typed startx. My box said:
(EE) ioctl EVIOCGNAME failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
(EE) PreInit returned NULL for "Mouse1"
Since I have two computers, basically identical, I looked up stuff on one and I decided to upgrade the problem box to 13.1 from 13.0 since that would undoubtedly fix the problem. Well, the problem is the same. However, root can startx just fine. Also, gpm seems to work fine for the user.

Just upgraded kubuntu to Lucid and found no KDE installed: bad news: if you're on kubuntu KDE should be upgraded automatically. So using kpackagekit in gnome installed the standard metapackage and got the option to log in with KDE (good news) but then KDE failed: segmentation fault in knotify4.it would not report the error: too little information. it dropped me back into an incomplete gnome environment (no top and bottom tool lines).

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 fresh and was putting my preferences back in for Firefox and MythTV and such when I noticed Evolution wouldn't start. I would click on it and the cursor would change for about 5 seconds and then nothing. I tried uninstalling Evolution (big mistake), but after I got back into the desktop, Evolution still wouldn't start. I can't seem to find anything around here that deals with this. Where should I start to debug this?

Ubuntu 10.10
Awhile back I was playing around with Plymouth and GDM resolutions. I followed some wrong instructions and screwed up my GDM. I have fixed my GDM, sorta, but at times it will not start or when it does the login screen has strange pixel errors.
Sometimes it starts fine without any problems or pixel errors. Other times I have to boot 2 to 3 times before GDM will start.
If GDM starts with pixel errors, I can still login to Ubuntu and the rest of the OS runs fine. Pixel errors only happen in GDM.
When GDM fails to start I get a blank black screen. Cannot enter command line. OS seems frozen and I have to reboot.

I've got a couple of nagging issues that may or may not be related to each other. First, although I have this machine set to log me on automatically (I'm the only user ever and there's no public access) it doesn't; I get the standard login welcome screen. In the system menu (from Applications) I have two login managers: "Login Screen" and "Login Screen (GDM2)". The first of these shows I'm configured for automatic login, as does the custom.conf file in /etc/gdm. However when I click its "unlock" button, it flashes orange momentarily but nothing else happens. The second manager doesn't seem to have any effect on the problem...
The other issue is that my networking fails to start during boot-up; I'm not using the network manager applet and am not starting it; instead I have the three NICs in the machine (which serves as the router and gateway for my LAN) configured in /etc/network/interfaces. Once I am logged in, I can run "sudo service networking start" from a Terminal window and everything works properly, but adding that same line to /etc/rc.local (minus the "sudo" of course) had no effect on the problem. Both issues happen only at boot time, and since this machine normally runs 24/7 except immediately after certain updates or when troubleshooting they're not show-stoppers, but I greatly prefer to have my systems working the way I've configured them rather than going off in other directions!
