Ubuntu :: Second Hard Drive Does Not Recognized Correctly
Jun 8, 2010
I had windows 7 installed on my machine and decided to go with a ubuntu win7 dual boot. The install went fine, but Ubuntu doesn't see my second HDD as anything but empty. My second HDD I set up in win7. It is actually two 320GB HDD striped together. It is holding alot of data that I would like to be able to access from both win7 and ubuntu.
When I run fdisk -l in the terminal I get:
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xf1c572ca .....
So Ubuntu sees the two HDD, just not as one with all my data on it like I see it in windows. Is there a way to set it up so I can use that second HDD (the two stripped) in both win7 and Ubuntu?

Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive. If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

I have a 2nd hard drive (500 GB) that I keep my media on. When I tried to access it, it wasn't showing up in places or even places > computer. I used system > administration > disk utility. On the left hand side it shows the drive listed with the type and model number. Right under that it shows 500 GB Hard Drive unrecognized unknown or unused. If possible I would like to recover the media on this drive. I had setup this drive as ext3 and had it mount /media/sdb1. I can go to /media/sdb1 in the file browser but nothing is there.

I am trying to install this OS. However no matter what I do the UBUNTU instllation CD doesn't recognize the hard drive on which I would like to install the OS on.
I currently have two SATA hard drives connected to my computer. MY primary is my Windows 7 drive and my second hard drive is my spare.
When i load up UBUNTU and get to the window where I can select which hard drive/partition to install to my second spare drive isn't there.

I went through the Fedora 11 DVD setup process up to the partition screen, which does show my external SATA drive correct as; /dev/sda when connected by eSATA, but it shows the internal drive which is a standard IDE, as; /dev/sdf , when it should be as; sdb, why ? I did run that fdisk -l in a terminal from one of my other installed Linux, and it did show drives as correct, ( sda, sdb ). I think this may be a issue related to the digital media card reader built into this 2006 Gateway desktop computer being detected as drives like Windows does and assigns drive letters, or is this some bug in Fedora 11 ?

I'm very new to Ubuntu. Now that I have it installed, my computer doesn't recognize my external hard drive or flash drive. How do I access my external hard drive and flash drive? I'm also trying to get Rosetta Stone to work using Wine, but having a heck of a time. I've searched the forums and have found some similar topics, but nothing that really helped me.

The external hard drive which contains all my photos and where I backed-up all my important documents is no longer recognized. It is a three month old 500GB Iomage Prestige Desktop Hard Drive. When I plug it in, it is recognised as a USB device, because it shows up when I type lsusb, but dmesg gives this error message.

I popped the disk out of the casing put it on a SATA connect internally and then tried the file recovery programs testdisk/photorec and SpinRite, but both failed because they couldn't recognize the external hard disk.

I bough a 640 GB external USB disk.I found something wasn't working well when I couldn't restore a backup from the disk (with sbackup). So I tried to convert the filesystem from fat32 to something newer.I installed gparted, and it shows no partitions on the 640 drive (however, I can access the filesystem!!!). Also, for some reason it shows as a 298.08 GiB drive. So I thought I should format it to solve this. When I tried to do this, gparted simply closed, with no error messages.

When I boot my computer, I can see dvd-rw drive detected correctly, though 9 times out of 10 it does not get detected by OS - drive's icon is not present in nautilus hence I cannot access any cd or dvd. Although when I restart a computer and try to boot from cd or dvd - it works perfectly, then after coming back to the os the cd/dvd won't be accessible. I a have Fedora 13 installed from the DVD ISO.

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

I have 2 Hard Disks in my computer both of them show in File & Folders, and they are both formated by Ububtu, I use the 2nd one for my Data storage as it's the larger of the two. The problem I have is that certain programs just don't see it! For example Album Shaper sees the boot drive but not the 2nd one which has all my photo's on it. OpenOffice is not a problem it sees both drives. But there are a few programs that just don't see it.

When i try to install ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop i get through the first 3 steps which are Language, Region, and Keyboard. when i get to Prepare partitions, there is nothing there (same problem with 9.10). I followed the steps of another thread about removing the raid settings and I am sure i did that correctly but it did not work, when i try to find my drives in terminal they can not even be found.
Both of my drives are SATA, one is 250gb, other is 500gb. They are both recognized by other operating systems. I have switched the SATA headers that they are plugged into. I really am just not sure what else to do here. Im not totally stupid at linux, ive been using it for a few years and i have taken two classes for linux in the past year. I really feel dumb for not being able to figure this out :/

I have 2 internal harddrives.
I installed Vista on sdb1 and later Ubuntu on sda1.
When I boot up, I am given choice of OS's to boot into. That worked fine until I formatted sdb1 and installed Windows 7.
Now when I boot, I am given the exact same options as before, and when I select the the old "Vista" Menu item, it gives me an error that it can not find some long serial number. The number is not my drive serial number. That number is completely different.
I can still boot into Ubuntu with out a problem.
Now, in order for me to boot into windows, I have change the BIOS boot order. That is obviously not ideal.

This hard disk is an old Maxtor (60G) extracted from an old computer, working fine. I placed in an enclosure and connected it to my Linux Box (Slack 12.1). It was recognized immediately and mounted automatically. However, before giving away the hard disk, I tried to wipe the data by running shred /dev/sdf At some point, I realized that it was going to take a long time, and aborted the process and disconnected the enclosure. Now, none of my Linux boxes recognize the disk inside the enclosure. Here is the output, when I plug in the usb cable, while using systemrescuecd on my desktop computer:
Quote:

Aug 20 00:58:17 sysresccd kernel: [ 3582.322051] usb 2-6: New USB device found, idVendor=04b4, idProduct=8613
Aug 20 00:58:17 sysresccd kernel: [ 3582.322054] usb 2-6: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0,
[Code]....
Is there a way to use this hard disk at this point?

I have a secondary harddrive that is auto mounted through fstab at startup in the /mnt/media_drive folder. I have not had any problems out of it until today.
I was trying to get the computer to act as a PS3 media server. I installed pms-linux, couldn't get it working, removed that, installed ushare, didn't like that, uninstalled that and reinstalled pms-linux. Now the PS3 sees the folder, but nothing else does. When I ls -l the /mnt/media_drive folder, I get this:
Code:
derek@shop:~$ ls /mnt/media_drive -l
ls: cannot access /mnt/media_drive/audio books: Permission denied
ls: cannot access /mnt/media_drive/playlists: Permission denied
ls: cannot access /mnt/media_drive/Christmas: Permission denied
ls: cannot access /mnt/media_drive/DVD_temp: Permission denied

I am running Ubuntu 10.04.03 on an ASUS P5VD2-X. There are numerous HDD attached, but one is uniquely Win XP, the other uniquely Ubuntu. Boot choice is via a GRUB loader. Ubuntu is the first choice normally. The problem is that more often than not, the system does not seem to be able to recognise the CD or DVD reader/writer. On some random occasions, they are recognised, but mostly not. But - and here is the upsetting bit - this problem never occurs when I boot up on Win XP. The CD/DVD devices are instantly and reliably recognised each and every time. So I guess that rules out a hardware or BIOS problem. This is a particularly annoying problem as use of the optical drives is required frequently, and it galls me having to revert to Windows just to use them.
