Ubuntu :: Won't Boot After Update ?

I installed Kubuntu Lucid 10 days ago and it all went pretty smooth aside from the Plymouth res issue which I fixed following some online tutorial. It was working fine until yesterday when I updated the system. I think the update was primarily nvidia and maybe a new kernel, among other packages.
Now it won't boot... Plymouth shows then it goes to a blank screen, it looks like it's still working cause Ctrl + Alt + Del makes it reboot, but I can't get Ctrl + Alt + F1 to do anything and I can't get it to boot in Text mode (not sure if this was changed in Lucid). Also I can't access GRUB, it simply doesn't show up after holding Shift or any other key.
So I'm left with a completely unusable system and not sure how I can debug it since I can't get a console? Any hard way to make it boot into text mode?

After some updates Jessie 8 my boot grub shows now 2 kernel versions to boot from.
3.16.0-4-amd64
3.16-3-amd64
- How do I know which one is the newest and if happy with it, how to remove the older one?

I updated ubuntu from 10.04, i had a dual boot with windows 7. It updated successfully, then restarted, then whenever I select ubuntu from my bootloader, it just resets the laptop back to the acer bios screen and takes me back to the bootloader.

Yesterday I got updated Ubuntu With Update Manager. Everything was OK until I rebooted the system so that update can tack effect. When I rebooted It's stuck in the middle of something. (No GUI). I tried recovery mode but same thing. Then I tried Previous version and it worked fine. Now I can boot into system but each time I need to select previous version. I found a script that gives information of boot (boot_info_script060).

So I just installed Karmic onto my netbook that used to have Jaunty on it. As usual I did a system update after the clean install finish. In that update it included a kernal update to 2.6.31.19. As far as I know the update went fine.So when I restarted, after the usual bios screen, it just freezes. Some gibberish comes up and nothing happens. I did a hard reset. Then when bios came up again, I chose boot option, and then clicked to boot from my hard drive. GRUB came up (finally) and I chose the old kernal and it booted fine.
Just for good measure I tried booting from 2.6.31.19 and the same strange freezing thing that I mentioned in paragraph two happened.

I am not sure what is up I tried to install the update 10.04 but it failed I thought a well never paid attention to the errors and rebooted now I still get grub and after a bunch of errors terminal prompt but won't boot

Can't boot after updating x this has happened before but not like this. Grub works just fine but nothing after what I can't do

2 recovery mode=black screen

I updated from 10.04 to 10.10 this afternoon, and after a reboot, I can't start ubuntu in the new kernel. Grub shows up fine, but after selecting the new kernel, all disk activity stops after a while. When booting in safe mode, the same thing happens.
Oddly, booting in the old kernel does work. I'm not sure which log files might be of use here, so haven't gotten much further..
[edit] Just tried to boot in the livecd, doesn't work either, same problem.... I guess there is a driver problem somewhere most likely

jump straight in with a problem. I'm experiencing the same problem mentioned here; where it was suggested to start an individual thread.I have been using ubuntu as a dual boot with vista for a couple of months. Apart from a few hiccups I've been very pleased, but after an update I am unable to boot ubuntu. It appears to be the same issue in the link above.
I originally installed 10.4 (because my first attempt with 10.10 would not install (turned out to be duff CD)) and then updated to 10.10. All was fine until this latest automatic update.I've tried a few things suggested -- copying the c:ubuntuwinbootwubildr file over c:wubildr -- with no luck... I'm worried about making things worse and thought I'd ask first. I hope that's OK.I also tried working from my liveCD, but it only gave me the option to install (because it's 10.4 and I've updated?

I have 10.04 installed on my daughters Laptop. After running an update manager session, the system asked for a restart. After restarting the Laptop won't boot up. Get a black screen scrolling with lots of hex addresses then 3 unable to mount messages ( mounting to /dev /sys /prod ) then a no init found message, followed by entering a busybox shell session which leaves me at initramfs: I'm a newbie at this linux shell stuff and don't want to make it any worse by scrabbling along blindly! System is a dell Inspiron 1501, Ubuntu is installed on a clean formatted single partition.

It happened to me again, I guess I need to ignore those updates but somehow I forget each time! This time it froze in middle of update no mouse no kybd no cap/num locks light nothing so I hard booted after an hour of wait, now I cannot boot at all. I go thru Grub menu then it says press S to skip and M to manually load. In most cases nothing works but I got to the prompt and put the root password but I dont have an IP address and cannot get 1? I did fsck -p but no errors. It says the OS is not on / or has been gone?

I have used Ubuntu since 8.04 LTS on my IBM T30 and A31 for almost three years now but recently all of them have problems with kernel updates(? maybe I am wrong but it was very clear that they failed after a kernel update). I have tried all three solutions provided by [URL] but none worked for me. My last A31 failed to boot yesterday after some updates (I noticed that there was a kernel update). It has 10.04 LTS on sda5. Dual boot (Windows XP on sda1 but rarely use it). Now it can't load kernel. What shows on the screen is:
GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu7 Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions. On the other T30 I had the same problem. I installed Windows XP and clean installed Linux Mint 8 and so far it is working alright. But on this machine I have an unfinished project that I really want to save it.

I have a Lenovo ideapad s10e with 4 HDs to it. I have windows xp as first OS, ubuntu 10.04 as other. Here's the situation: I installed Ubuntu 10.04 using Wubi. I can dual-boot, no problem at all. After I logged in to Ubuntu, I downloaded a set of updates. The next day, there's a prompt for an ubuntu update (10.10?). So I installed the update for an hour or so,then a menu for this "grub" appeared. So I just clicked it.
After the update has been finished and my laptop rebooted, I cannot boot, instead this option appeared:
Eroor No Such Device (some sort of numbers)
Grub Rescue>
I tried restoring my windows xp bootloader using a recovery pack but it doesn't load. I also tried supergrub2 and it doesn't load, too (I used usb.)

I updated to 11.04, looked down after about an hour and a half, and my laptop was off. Now when I turn it on, it acts like it's checking my desk, but it says something like "/ is not available or doesn't exist press s to skip, or m to manually recover" then when you skip it's like "/mnt is not available" It could be possible I accidentally turned it off during the upgrade.

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 via wubi.exe to dual-boot between Ubuntu and Windows XP Home Edition. Ubuntu was the default OS to load on boot. I tried running a few updates in Ubuntu through the update manager, followed the instructions in the wizard, and restarted my computer when asked. The computer now automatically boots straight into the "GNU GRUB version 1.99~rc1-13ubuntu3 Minimum BASH-like line editing is supported..."
I have only just started to get into Linux. I have no idea how to get through this portion. I can't load back into Windows either (at least...I'm not sure how to. I never get the opportunity to choose which OS to launch). I've tried researching this issue, but still not having a lot of success. My only current option is to completely reformat my HD, but this is (hopefully) not going to be needed. If I could just get back into Windows I think I could probably reinstall with Wubi.

today when i updated my ubuntu 9.10 it was about 44mb update and update manager was not able to download 13mb of files i clicked continue anyway. after that i shut down my pc and when i restarted it my old black and ordinary GRUB was gone and there was one with Debian symbol and blue background and everything and when i selected any OS ( i have 3 os 1 on my 80GB hard disk which is ubuntu and other 2 are debian and windows XP which are on 20GB hard disk) and it said
invalid character '+' file not found.
so i am now running on live cd.

I got a grub error each time after updating ubuntu. I have to boot the system manually, and then update grub2. Now I am really scared to update. I thought this bug would be solved very soon, but it is still there. I can't bare it anymore.

Just did an update to 9.1 & now am unable to boot to ubuntu, windows7 still boots ok. Didnt pay much attention to the update but did notice there were a lot of cups files. Booting to ubuntu get something about using a tab & then getting a list of commands one can do. Tried boot got 'no kernel' tried exit & got a pc reboot which let me back to the tab msg.

Ubuntu 10.04 performed an automatic update today which required a reboot afterwards. The reboot took me into a shell "GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu6", rather than the usual grub boot menu.

When I updated Ubuntu from the update manager, it just gives me this error code from a JPG attachment I just added with this post. It keeps on saying that every time ubuntu boots up.Is there a Fix? This morning, I booted into my administrator account and checked for updates. There were a number (bogofilter, for one) but also a update to the 2.6.32-24 kernel. I installed the updates and rebooted the system. When I rebooted, the thought occurred to me (from reading another thread) that one of the reasons my Zareason desktop boots slower than my laptop (55 seconds vs 35) was that I have an external floppy drive attached, and perhaps the delay was a difference in my system checking for a bootable floppy.
So I went into the BIOS when it was booting to check to see if the floppy was enabled (it wasn't). Then I selected "Exit without saving" and resumed booting. What happened next was instead of seeing the Ubuntu icon and the six dots, I see "Ubuntu 10.04" and four dots. Then I get on the black screen these errors (sorry for any mistyping, I wrote them down on a sheet of paper as I had no other computer available to troubleshoot):

Googling around once I got into work and had computer access, it seems that the problem is GRUB has lost track of what partition I should boot from? Here is a thread which might be relevant: [URL]. Before I left for work, I went into the BIOS again and looked at the CMOS settings--everything looked normal. I once again exited without saving anything. I was going to try selecting an earlier kernel from the GRUB menu on boot, but couldn't remember the key to press.
I found out later today, to enter GRUB 2 it's been changed to the shift key, and not the F2 key like it used to be. One poster on the aforementioned thread said his system would boot ok to the earlier kernel. The thread above has as its solution to either try to tell GRUB where your boot partition is and/or re-installing GRUB. I have /home on a separate partition, so if I need to do a re-install I can do so without it being a major pain. Sda1 is the partition which has the OS.

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 on a desktop. I then did the system updates and on the reboot the system now hangs at the splash screen before the login screen. I only get a blinking cursor on the text-based terminals. I don't see the grub menu, I assume because Ubuntu is the only OS on this machine. So I can't boot to single user or text-only mode.

I updated my Ubuntu 10.04 on Dell 1330 and on the next boot it failed. I get a series of messages, the main point seems to be that it can't find the files it needs to mount.I tried booting from the live cd I used to install 10.04, but it can't boot either due to wrong user id error and maybe trying to boot from wrong kernel?At this point I am willing to just wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install but how to do that if I can't run the install cd?Or is there a way from initramfs to solve this?I tried mount /dev/sda1/mnt but it says cannot read /etc/fstab no such file.libdevmapper

I'm in the live CD right now trying to figure out what to do. When I first got into Ubuntu, it asked me to install nVidia drivers, so I did. Afterwards, it said I needed to restart my computer to finish installation, but when upon getting past the bootloader, my screen hangs on "Assuming drive cache: write through". I found this post: [URL] but the terminal commands didn't help and I can't find /etc/xorg.cfg even if I show hidden files. I've added a picture of the screen I get when I try to boot up, so maybe someone can tell me what to do to get back into Ubuntu. I would like to be able to get back without having to reinstall, if possible.
