I've loaded Cairo-dock, deleted my bottom panel in Gnome & reduce my top panel to a minimum showing only "notifications". I can't get my windows to fill the top 10% of the screen on maximise without going full-screen and losing the window borders and the menu bar.how I can configure the maximise setting to use the whole screen?
I have an Nvidia card and I am using ubuntu 10.04. Before installing the ubuntu nvidia restricted drivers, the boot screen with the ubuntu logo would cover the entire display area of the monitor. But now, after installing the Nvidia driver and fixing the display resolution of the boot screen with the Plymouth fix, the boot screen doesn't expand to fit the entirety of the monitor display area. How can I fix this? There is a good 2 inch off from either side of the display while booting.

Everything worked fine, except at boot, the splash screen doesn't fill the entire monitor. I set it to the native resolution of my monitor, 1920x1080. Its just not stretched fullscreen.
I can't log in on my Acer Aspire One running Xubuntu 9.10. I restarted the computer half an hour ago, and when I fill in the log-in window, the pc spins a moment, and the log-in window comes back.I can start up the KDE session, and have done so to post this.Have any of you experienced something similar, and how can I fix it
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using OpenOffice from repo. In Calc I want to fill in 2 cells under eachother, consisting of a name, space and a digit. Then, after selecting both cells, drag them down to get a list of this name, with only the digits being different. When using OpenOffice from original download, this gave no problem. Now however, I'm presented with a Fill Series window that gives me some options like Direction, Series type, etc. And whatever I fill in, it says �nvald value. How can I get rid of this Fill Series window. The Help function in OpenOffice doesn't give a clue on Fill Series.

I was having trouble with the sound of the wmv files on linux, but i solved it by coping the w32 dll libraries and now it works just fine. There is one problem though : whatever player i use to open and play a wmv file (mplayer, vlc), it doesn't fit the full screen - in windows the same movie DOES.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOne of those things that make yo go "WTF?" After browsing the internet with Firefox, there appears a peculiar problem: if I move the pointer to a certain area of the screen, I can't click (left, right, middle) nor use mouse wheel. The area can be of variable size, but usually it's small, in the lower part of the screen, it's x dimension greater than y one (a horizontally placed rectangle). The problem doesn't go away when I restart Firefox (obviously it does when I reboot). It obstructs any window under it (I can't even click on the desktop where 'it' is). It's as if there is an invisible window that 'steals' focus when I move the mouse over it. I'm on 11.04, Classic Ubuntu (Gnome 2.3x).
A quick UPDATE: dragging an icon and dropping it on the said area behaves as if I dragged an item and dropped it where it doesn't belong (i.e. it just slowly returns to it's original position). Also, I tried killing it with Force Quit applet, but only my desktop reloaded.
I started my Debian 6 machine today and the terminal (Alt+Ctrl+F1) is only using the top left area of the screen. The resolution is correct but the whole screen just isn't filled with text. When I log in and run startx the GUI is in a very small resolution.
I've tried everything I can find with GRUB_GFXMODE and GRUB_GFX_PAYLOAD but nothing works.
I'm going to do a permanent install of fedora 10 soon, within the next couple of days.
1. When installing it asks if I need to log in as NIC, something about networks. What would that be about?
2. Is there any way to resize the screen to fill more of the monitor? Right now it leaves about an inch of blackness on the let side which is more than other os's that I've seen.
i just installed an ati radeon hd 4350 video card. after doing so i installed the restricted drivers and found that the image would no longer fill the entire screen no matter what i did. i then disabled the drivers and rebooted. now when i log into gnome all i can see is a white desktop with no icons or even programs when they are loaded (i can tell that some load because i can see when the cursor changes for a text box and the like). would re-enabling the drivers help with this? if so i need a command to do so as i have had to boot into xterm to write this.

View 2 Replies View RelatedHave any of you used Debian 6 Squeeze yet? Have you encountered a problem of the OS not entirely filling in the left side of the video monitor leaving approximately (19 inch monitor) a half inch vertically black non-filled part?
This happens in several Debian 6 Squeeze itterations: Net-intall, commercial intalls, etc.
It could be a hardware problem but it happens on other machines as well, so I do not lean that way. There are other machinations of video pasting during bootup such as the left hand of the screen being on the right and vice-versa, scrunched up lines of garbage taking hold of certain sections of the screen.
If you don't know, users are able to quickly resize windows using the "ALT+MiddleClick" key shortcut/combo. Basically, hold the ALT key, and mouse middle click and hold on a window. Move the mouse around, and it will resize the window for you.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open a single Window.
2) Near the bottom-right-hand corner of the window, ALT+MiddleClick and drag. It should resize. Great. It works.
What Doesn't Work:
Now, the problem arises when you have multiple windows open on the desktop, they are "layered". i.e. you might have several windows open "behind" the one currently "up front". Example:
If I try to ALT+MiddleClick the "foreground window", it rarely actually resizes THAT window, and instead jumps one of the windows from behind to the front, and resizes that one instead!
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open 3x gnome-terminal windows and say some nautilus window. Place them overtop one another. (like the above image)
2) Try to ALT+MiddleClick the foreground window.
3) Repeat this always trying to grab the foreground window.

How do I move the Window control buttons when the window is in full screen mode? I.e.: I know how to go into gconf-editor:

gconf-editor --> apps --> metacity --> general --> button layout = ":minimize,maximize,close"
(I've intentionally disabled the menu...)
What I want is my window controls to be on the right side of the window when the window is in full screen mode.
Also I've had an issue with the Unity dockbar glitching out. I can still click on the buttons (i.e. the logout button) but it displays like a nintendo game inserted crooked. Is there a way to 'restart' unity without log out/ log in?
Any one else experienced any glitches with unity auto hiding/showing?
I have asked for a video capturing software before but recommend a GOOD screen recorder where you can select the window/window size the axis and also a good editing software which will render/export into FULL 720p HD

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and am having a problem with the window manager. When I log in and after it applies my background and the panels load, the window manager doesn't start right away, so if I open a program it won't have a top to it. I have to turn on Compiz, which turns off every time I turn on the computer. If I set it to normal, it searches for drivers and then the tops of windows appear. I have had to do this every time since I upgraded. I would do a clean install, but I have no way to back up my data since I have so much. How can I fix this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a second OS on my XP machine (on a second partition). It worked fine for about a month, but this time when I booted up in Ubuntu, it showed the Ubuntu loading screen, then the desktop background picture and mouse, but it did not load the login window. I have no idea how to fix this, because most problems are about the entire X server not working, whereas my screen works.
I tried pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1, stopping gdm, then running startx, which mostly worked, except the date and time status bar addons had an error loading and the task bar did not have any workspace icons on it. I would like to login the normal way to get back to my good old Ubuntu desktop, but the window does not want to load. I have restarted the computer multiple times, with the same result.

I'm having a issue with gwibber: the window doesn't open, but I can tell it's working because I can tweet via Me menu. Also, the "microblogging" arrow/checkbox is active in the messaging-menu.
The window opens without problems in my dad's session, so I guess that if I delete some config file in my /home it will get fixed. where are the gwibber config files? I couldn't find them =/

They open, I can see them, but when I press the keyboard, it's still Nautilus which gets the commands.
This is because Nautilus stays the active window!
Most annoyingly, when I want to have a quick look at an image, and then close it, Nautilus closes instead (Alt+F4).
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
How to solve it?
I'm a big fan of Gnome's alt/middle-click to resize a window. However, it doesn't work anymore for me, and I believe it stopped working (or got toggled off) when I installed the Unity desktop package (just wanted to check it out).

It has some information filled out in it already and I don't want to lose that by doing anything that overwrites it or loses something in a conversion, etc. Also, it is two pages so I can't print it out, fill it in and then scan it because I would end up with two files instead of just one then.
