I'm going to do a permanent install of fedora 10 soon, within the next couple of days.
1. When installing it asks if I need to log in as NIC, something about networks. What would that be about?
2. Is there any way to resize the screen to fill more of the monitor? Right now it leaves about an inch of blackness on the let side which is more than other os's that I've seen.
I have an Nvidia card and I am using ubuntu 10.04. Before installing the ubuntu nvidia restricted drivers, the boot screen with the ubuntu logo would cover the entire display area of the monitor. But now, after installing the Nvidia driver and fixing the display resolution of the boot screen with the Plymouth fix, the boot screen doesn't expand to fit the entirety of the monitor display area. How can I fix this? There is a good 2 inch off from either side of the display while booting.
View 3 Replies View RelatedHave any of you used Debian 6 Squeeze yet? Have you encountered a problem of the OS not entirely filling in the left side of the video monitor leaving approximately (19 inch monitor) a half inch vertically black non-filled part?
This happens in several Debian 6 Squeeze itterations: Net-intall, commercial intalls, etc.
It could be a hardware problem but it happens on other machines as well, so I do not lean that way. There are other machinations of video pasting during bootup such as the left hand of the screen being on the right and vice-versa, scrunched up lines of garbage taking hold of certain sections of the screen.

Everything worked fine, except at boot, the splash screen doesn't fill the entire monitor. I set it to the native resolution of my monitor, 1920x1080. Its just not stretched fullscreen.
I installed a dual boot windows 7 and xubuntu and now decided that I would like to allocate more hard disk space to xubuntu. I've resized the windows partition (sda2 in the screenshot) and it is now the grey unallocated. I'm having trouble moving this unallocated space to the linux portion (sda5). I did my homework and found that this is done by booting off a live cd and using gparted from there, because you can't modify a partition that you're using. I also read that you had to turn swap off. I did both of these tasks, but as you can see from the attached screenshot, I am unable to resize the linux partition to fill the unallocated space.

setting up my dual monitors. I can get a continuous screen but the screen does fill the lcd screen all the way. I have dove in to xorg. I'm on fedora 12 .

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again.
When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.

I just installed Fedora 11 with Gnome.
Windows often go beyond the edge of the screen so I cannot see everything that is in the window or press buttons when I need to.
I know I can drag the windows around with [Alt] but that is not a longterm solution.
So how do I resize windows to fit the screen ?

I've loaded Cairo-dock, deleted my bottom panel in Gnome & reduce my top panel to a minimum showing only "notifications". I can't get my windows to fill the top 10% of the screen on maximise without going full-screen and losing the window borders and the menu bar.how I can configure the maximise setting to use the whole screen?
I started my Debian 6 machine today and the terminal (Alt+Ctrl+F1) is only using the top left area of the screen. The resolution is correct but the whole screen just isn't filled with text. When I log in and run startx the GUI is in a very small resolution.
I've tried everything I can find with GRUB_GFXMODE and GRUB_GFX_PAYLOAD but nothing works.
i just installed an ati radeon hd 4350 video card. after doing so i installed the restricted drivers and found that the image would no longer fill the entire screen no matter what i did. i then disabled the drivers and rebooted. now when i log into gnome all i can see is a white desktop with no icons or even programs when they are loaded (i can tell that some load because i can see when the cursor changes for a text box and the like). would re-enabling the drivers help with this? if so i need a command to do so as i have had to boot into xterm to write this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI threw F12 KDE on my spare rig and wanted to throw Ubuntu on it as dual boot so I can play around with different things in each flavor. I installed F12 across the entire drive and later decided I wanted to try Ubuntu with it dual boot. I booted to Ubuntu's LiveCD and fired up GParted - but GParted can't resize the partition. It just gives me a 200mb EXT4 partition and "lvm2".
View 2 Replies View RelatedInstalled a test system and I messed up. I let the installer use the entire 200gb for F12 install when I only wanted to use 100gb. Since it is test and new install I could just blow it away and start over but decided to use this as a learning opportunity. I chose all the defaults on the install so my partition is ext4. Since the partition I want to resize is in use while the system is up, I need to do this offline.
I have read a bit and it looks like there are couple of methods I could use. I have an install DVD and a Live CD so I could use either. If I could use a GUI that would be nice but I do not know how to access that if there is one. I have already booted to the Live CD and figured out how to access the command line tools (resize2fs and lvm) although I have not figured out how to use them yet.
I did an upgrade to F15 from F13. I was a little skeptical about the upgrade (I had always reinstalled in the past), but so far it seems to have worked great. What were people thinking when they released Gnome? No minimize of resize buttons for all windows (I downloaded the F15 updates today, and there doesn't seem to be any updates to fix the situation). Ridiculous. Who did any testing on this? Once a fix was found for that, I find Gnome to be non intuitive and inefficient regarding response time and user key strokes required.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 on new computer for office, got everything working great at home with old 15" monitor, took to office hooked up to Multisync 97f monitor, and not recognized 640x480 is best. I Have onboard Geforce 6150se/ 430 and have the newest driver installed from Nvidia 256.44. I tried to install everything that said multisync in synaptics but screen jumps around when trying to click on anything because it don't fit right.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was on earlier 9.x version of ubuntu with following configuration working perfectly: IBM ThinkPad T60 with ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400 VGA graphics card (found it from lspci) With an external Dell 19" monitor attached to it. I upgraded yesterday to Ubuntu 10.4 LTS and now the Dell monitor screen keeps flickering all the time! I always work with an external bigger monitor attached to my laptop as working for long hours on the smaller screen of the laptop gives me headache. The frustrating point is, this setting was working perfectly until I was on Ubuntu 9.x, I upgraded to 10.04 LTS and this has stopped working.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Fedora 14 over an old Ubuntu (heron, I think). The old install used a single partition for both / and /home; and I wanted to try to avoid reinstalling /home if possible (but yes, I did back it up). I chose the anaconda option to shrink the old Ubuntu /, and created a new LVM for the Fedora /. This seemed to work perfectly. I mounted the old / on '/host' (an old naming habit), and then mounted individual home dirs into /home using autofs. All seemed fine. However, on my first reboot after the autofs mounts fsck failed. The current situation is as follows:

Resize2fs tells me to run fsck, and complains of a short read if I try to force. Fsck seems to run fine if I say 'no' to the abort prompt, but doesn't change the problem. Filesystem is ext3. Started with debugfs. First used icheck and ncheck to work out which file(s) had been written to the non-existent blocks past the partition size. Fortunately, there was only one. Deleted that file (can restore it from backup later). Quit debugfs. Now resize2fs -p -f worked perfectly. fsck after resizing was clean. Reboot seems happy. As for the origin of the problem, I would guess there's a rounding bug in the code anaconda uses to shrink partitions.
I'm playing with dual monitors. I have an NVIDIA GT220 set up so that my monitor and my TV are running as extended desktops. Everything is working well enough, but there is one annoying bit I've noticed:
If I'm watching ..... on monitor 1 in fullscreen and working on monitor 2, clicking anything in monitor 2 kills full-screen in monitor 1. Is this something that can be fixed somehow or is it a hardwired "feature"?
I installed FC11 on my laptop T43 and the video card is ATI Mobility Radeon x300. Now I have a problem of screen resolution with external monitor:
When I do presentation, I have to mirror the two monitors and both set to 1024*768, which is not perfect.
I remember that when I use RHEL 5 desktop edition, The system can automatically detect the external monitor and set it by itself ----- The laptop uses 1400*1050 and the external monitors such as projector uses 1024*768. But I haven't found such feature on FC11.
I am using lenovo laptop and I have docking system, to extend another monitor on my desk for display.

How to setup in fedora, so I can have both monitor display same screen, with respect of their resolution? When I click "MIrror displays" the resolution gets messed up. I want to use my monitor for the main use and close the lid of the laptop.
I am having problems with the refresh rate if the screen. In the refresh mode of the monitor in the monitor options have only one option 60Hz. I have LG 24 + ATI Radon 3870, and have already installed the ATI driver via Ubuntu download center.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI did a LiveCD to USB install, following the directions I found at [url] When I went to reboot to the USB stick, all I get is a black Screen (monitor is on and lit, just nothing on the display) No cursor or command prompt. I've tried holding shift to bring up the GRUB menu, changing splash quiet to nomodeset, or just adding nomodeset after the splash quiet thing. I've even tried xforcevesa instead of nomodeset still black screen. Looking at the logs nothing is current as of the last time I tried to boot the computer, it's strictly what was written when I installed it to the stick. Other things I've checked/tried, Pressing CTRL+Alt+F1 at GRUB to get TTY, all I get is that blank screen. I've Checked etc/default/grub to ensure the timeout was higher then 0. The Install CD seems to be OK but I have (as it did another install successfully) but I haven't done any throughal checking of it (there was no check this disk on the first screen of the LiveCD) The USB sticks also seem to be ok (in windows though). Using the disk utility on the live CD I did check the file system on the USB stick, the "/" partition came up clean. Anybody have any other thoughts on this install, any thing else I can check?

That's not workable for me. dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sdxx has been running for 36 hours, and I need to finish setting up the filesystem. But I also need to make a "professional effort" at encrypting the partition. I am supposed to fill the partition with random data, to strengthen the encryption for a LUKS partition. It seems that if the bad guys get the drive, they have much more time to try and crack it, then I have to encrypt it. Ok, so I can try Code: sudo /sbin/badblocks -c 10240 -s -w -t random -v /dev/sdxx How long can I expect badblocks to run on a 2TB partition?.

Install Fedora 12 from livecd on a widescreen monitor:
- Using Nvidia 96xx drivers for my Gforce2 MX
Everything runs fine at this point. Connect old 17" flatscreen and no network: Login freezes for about a minute after username selection, no password prompt, no mouse movement, no keyboard response, after timeout I return to login screen before username selection .. and can repeat this or.. At that point (or before that point) I can ctrl+alt F2 to 'terminal' screen, login works fine.
init 3, login as root
startx
Works fine then, resolution is %^# tho, and cant change it at that point due to errors I get. I'm convinced the problem has nothing to do with my X configuration tbh. Booting from the LiveCD on this configuration works fine. I am tempted to think it has something to do with my GDM, but as my knowledge is limited, I cant figure it out. If I reconnect the widescreen, it all works fine ...

View 2 Replies View RelatedDespite being warned from a friend of mine who works for Intel that the new version of Ubuntu 11.04 sucked? I upgraded from 10.10 which worked perfectly fine and did everything that I wanted it to except work with my COBY MP3 player which is what I hoped 11.04 would do. It all worked great until I rebooted. I previously had the main screen on the left where all of the menus are and the right screen was the 2nd monitor.
Once it rebooted it let me login and loaded the desktop but the main screen is now on the right with that stupid application bar going up the side, all of my folders, etc. are all there but NOTHING is clickable, even the icons up in the right corner where you logout, etc. will not do anything other than highlight that you have clicked on them, the hard drive light flickers for a few moments then nothing.
Also the left hand screen is completely blank unless I move the mouse cursor through it. If I just leave the computer sitting there eventually the screens go dark and the monitor lights start flashing like it is supposed to but if I wiggle the mouse the screens come back on and the mouse is there but there is no login prompt to let me log back in. Pardon my French but this OS is a piece of <bleep> and sucks just like I was told.
I have just "finished" updating my Ubuntu 9.10. (somehow I knew that something is going to go wrong), and now my PC starts, works fine for a few seconds, then I get a black screen for a moment, and then my monitor starts acting like PC is off.Interestingly I think that otherwise everything is working just fine and that I just can't see anything due to the black screen (monitor is flashing like there is no signal coming from PC).

What I have done is, freshly installed Vista Home Premium 64 bit on the entire Hard Drive (680GB), then fired up the live CD and told the installer to resize sda1 (The windows partition) to about a 60:40 ratio. I intend to dual boot the system
Now the thing is, it's been running for half an hour now and there's no progress indicator on the installer so I don't know if its actually doing anything. Well there is a progress indicator but it's nonsensical, it just moves backward and forwards. The HDD indicator LED on my computer is flashing every now and again, but not constantly as I expect it to?
