Ubuntu :: Image Viewer Opened From Nautilus Doesn't Change Active Window / Fix It?
Sep 1, 2010There's something very annoying about how Nautilus opens "image viewer" windows.
They open, I can see them, but when I press the keyboard, it's still Nautilus which gets the commands.
This is because Nautilus stays the active window!
Most annoyingly, when I want to have a quick look at an image, and then close it, Nautilus closes instead (Alt+F4).
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
How to solve it?
Ubuntu :: ALT+MiddleClick (resize Window) Doesn't Grab Foreground (top) Window
Jan 16, 2011If you don't know, users are able to quickly resize windows using the "ALT+MiddleClick" key shortcut/combo. Basically, hold the ALT key, and mouse middle click and hold on a window. Move the mouse around, and it will resize the window for you.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open a single Window.
2) Near the bottom-right-hand corner of the window, ALT+MiddleClick and drag. It should resize. Great. It works.
What Doesn't Work:
Now, the problem arises when you have multiple windows open on the desktop, they are "layered". i.e. you might have several windows open "behind" the one currently "up front". Example:
If I try to ALT+MiddleClick the "foreground window", it rarely actually resizes THAT window, and instead jumps one of the windows from behind to the front, and resizes that one instead!
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open 3x gnome-terminal windows and say some nautilus window. Place them overtop one another. (like the above image)
2) Try to ALT+MiddleClick the foreground window.
3) Repeat this always trying to grab the foreground window.
For me, the window manager seems to bring some window from the background to the front! Desktop Recording of the Problem: [URL]

Apr 4, 2011I updated my system from FC13 2.6.34.7-66 to 2.6.34.8-68 for both the kernel and the kmod-wl RPM's. After doing so, iwconfig wlan0 key 1234567890 no longer works. I get an error indicating 'invalid argument'. If I reboot using the previous kernel/wl.ko module, it works The size of the wl.ko module increased in size by almost 30%. Did I somehow get the wrong RPM?

Jul 14, 2011I have Update Manager set to check for updates on a daily basis but to prompt me before downloading or installing them. Because I have Update Manager set to check on a Daily basis, I expect that I will receive a prompt that an update is available no later than the day after the update is available (assuming of course I have my computer turned on). Yet I only receive a prompt days or even a week after the update was made available.
For example, let's say that my PPA of Google Chrome issues an update on Tuesday. Despite the fact that my ubuntu computer was on for a couple hours in the morning on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, no update prompt appears alerting me to available updates. If I manually open Update Manager on Friday afternoon, then the update is there and waiting for installation. But how come I don't get an automatic prompt that an update is available? Do I have my settings wrong or something?
Ubuntu :: Window Manager Doesn't Start?
May 2, 2010I just upgraded Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and am having a problem with the window manager. When I log in and after it applies my background and the panels load, the window manager doesn't start right away, so if I open a program it won't have a top to it. I have to turn on Compiz, which turns off every time I turn on the computer. If I set it to normal, it searches for drivers and then the tops of windows appear. I have had to do this every time since I upgraded. I would do a clean install, but I have no way to back up my data since I have so much. How can I fix this?

Ubuntu :: Login Window Doesn't Load
Aug 27, 2010I installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a second OS on my XP machine (on a second partition). It worked fine for about a month, but this time when I booted up in Ubuntu, it showed the Ubuntu loading screen, then the desktop background picture and mouse, but it did not load the login window. I have no idea how to fix this, because most problems are about the entire X server not working, whereas my screen works.
I tried pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1, stopping gdm, then running startx, which mostly worked, except the date and time status bar addons had an error loading and the task bar did not have any workspace icons on it. I would like to login the normal way to get back to my good old Ubuntu desktop, but the window does not want to load. I have restarted the computer multiple times, with the same result.

May 25, 2010I'm trying to install an emerald theme while maintaining the Compiz desktop effects. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Lynx and have installed Emerald Theme Manager and Compiz. I was looking for a good theme to go with my background/laptop and took a liking to this one I'm sure this is a stupid question but how do I install this? By following the link to the rgba true theme, there are "instructions" on how to install it, but I just cant figure it out. I have the window borders setup but I'm stumped on how to get the transparent black window backgrounds(by window backgrounds I mean everything inside the frame). The frame works fine but it looks terrible with the solid white window interior. Can someone tell me how to get this working? I have already tried Compiz opacity (terrible, makes everything unreadable). Every background setting I see is RGB, no transparent setting. If it helps, I'm trying to get everything ~75% transparent, no solid colors.

Feb 20, 2011I have an issue with the manner in which Network Manager is configuring the network and short of ditching Network Manager I can see no solution.The issue : Getting a machine to update its machine name in the DNS serverSounds simple doesn't it I operate a FreeBSD based firewall / DHCP / DNS server, using a default Network Manager DHCP configuration the Fedora clients do not register their names with the DNS server when they obtain an address.
I have traced the communications with Wireshark and the Fedora clients are NOT supplying the PC's hostname as part of the exchange so this is NOT a DNS server configuration issue. If I uncheck the option 'Automatically obtain DNS information from provider' under the DHCP settings the Fedora clients DO register the hostname that is put into the Hostname (optional) databox. They do NOT however store the DNS server IP address or any other records defined by the DNS server.
Is there some hidden settings or is this a bug because it isn't acceptable 'DHCP' behaviour if it isn't possible to automatically set DNS server IP addresses and at the same time register the hostname during the DHCP negotiation. Before it is said I know I can use a fixed DNS IP address but am not prepared to long term, I am also not prepared to define the Fedora clients with a 'static' IP. I am similarly not interested in playing around with scripts or any other such 'frigs' to achieve what should be a standard activity - registering a host with DNS during the DHCP negotiation.

I do not like the look of the password entry window. the one that came with the GTK2 theme I use looked great and I was wondering if there was a way to tell xscreensaver to use that one instead of the one that it uses by default. Also, whenever I restart my computer I have to open up xscreensaver and tell it to kill the gnome-screensaver daemon and then start the xscreensaver one. Is there a way to automate this process?
