Ubuntu :: Win7 Crashes After 9.10 Install

Feb 24, 2010

I bought a new PC few months ago and tried Win7, no problems found. Then I installed Ubuntu 9.10 for x64 (I use Ubuntu since 6.06 but until PC upgrade I sticked to 8.10) and since then, every now and then bot win and buntu crash for no reason at random, often before loggin in. At firsth I tought it was some problems with the shared NTFS partition, so formatted it in FAT32 but this didn't helped. Now this's my fstab:

Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB2 Bootloader Crashes With Win7 And 10.04 Dual Boot?

May 7, 2010

I have a Dell Studio 14 laptop with Windows 7 64bit preinstalled. The processor is core i5 and the machine has 4GB RAM. I freed 25GB of memory from my Hard disk and tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 (AMD). Everything went fine. I restarted and Logged into Ubuntu. It worked like a charm. Then I restarted to Windows7. This also worked well as expected.

But, when I rebooted again, I got a black screen saying that No modules found. Press any key to restart
When I press a key, it says No operating system found, probably after checking through a network (it printed lines starting with PXE).

I tried exactly in the same way with Ubuntu 8.04 in my machine, and this worked without any problem. The Bootloader was not corrupted after restarting from Windows. I noticed the problem with Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. I feel like a problem regarding the bootloader version. AFAIK, 9.10 and 10.04 is using GRUB2 when 8.04 use the old version of GRUB. Will I have to switch to the legacy GRUB? (I would love to keep using GRUB2). If yes, I would like to know How.

Ubuntu Installation :: Win7 Bootloader Is Broken / Doesn't Seem To Detect The Win7?

May 2, 2011

I had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

Ubuntu Installation :: Re-install Grub2 After New Win7 Install To New Disc?

Apr 18, 2011

I have been running ONLY linux (ubuntu) on my computer for years now. However, a friend sucked me back into the world of MMO's (angry fist @ RIFT). So, I decided to pick up a new disc, slap windows 7 on it and now want to dual boot.Basically I had to do some disc juggling to get windows to play nice. So my windows drive is now first, then my Ubuntu drive second. Its been a while so I'm wondering how involved / what would be the steps to get grub2 to chainload into windows7 (in my head I want to say I'm going to boot into the live cd, mount the windows disc and reinstall the loader to the windows drive since its the first disc in the chain?)

Networking :: After Upgrading From Win7-32 To WIN7-64 Can't Mount Cifs Shares

Jul 21, 2010

This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.

First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:

I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.

If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.

From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails

Code:

I try this manually now:

Code:

Next I try to mount it:

Code:

I looked at my firewall rules and they seem ok.

Next test was connecting to my 2nd pc on windows XP no probs mounted first time.

What is wrong with my new Win 7 setup?

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse11.4 - Clear Up A Free Space In HD To Install Win7 ?

Jul 9, 2011

Just installed and started to use the suse11.4 two weeks ago when my Win7 broke down. Now I got a new Win7 recovery disc from my laptop manufacturer, and want to install a Win7 accompanying with the suse11.4.

My question is how to clear up a free space in HD to install win7? Currently, I have 3 partitions that are sda1, sda2 and sda3 with space 2G(swap), 20G(root) and 270G(home) respectively. I want to free up half space from sda3 to install Win7, how to do it without delete the data on it? One weird thing is that my HD totally is 320G, but when I installed SUSE, only 300G was usable and the other 20G is missing until now. The fdisk -l command info. is showed below:

OpenSUSE Install :: Revert To Windows Bootloader To Install Win7 SP1?

Feb 25, 2011

Currently I am running a dual boot with Windows 7 and openSUSE 11.3. Windows has two partitions, one for the system partition and another for the OS. I have 3 Linux partitions (swap, root, and home). Obviously I am running GRUB to boot, but this seems to be impacting my ability to install Windows 7 SP1. I would like to revert back to the Windows boot loader, install the Service Pack, and then revert back to GRUB. How do I do this?

Ubuntu :: Install On A Netbook With Win7?

Jan 17, 2011

I've just recently bought myself a netbook (Asus 1015PEM) and I've been trying to get rid of Win7 that comes with it and install a fresh copy of Ubuntu or OpenSuse. The thing is my netbook just can't seem to be able to detect the Pendrive when I reboot. I've already changed the boot order but nothing happens. The pendrive is NOT damaged and the netbook does detect it when already on windows screen.

Note that I do not want to install Ubuntu/OpenSuse as a Windows aplication. I want to wipe Windows and install one of those linux distros.

Ubuntu :: Random Win7 Freezes After 1.0.10 Install?

Oct 16, 2010

I currently have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 running on my Asus laptop. I decided to install Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows, as I will need it for work. It was installed via side-by-side and re-sized the partition

The installation of Ubuntu was flawless and works great, but now when I boot to Windows, its will randomly freeze, sometimes in 1 minute, sometimes within 10 minutes.

The only way I can solve this issue, is to either perform a disk scan from windows or restore the MBR.

The disk scan works, and Windows run fine, although If I boot Ubuntu again, run that for awhile, then boot windows again the problem returns.

Restoring the MBR works as well, though without a dualboot, its useless

I have also tried EasyBCD and replaced GRUB with Windows boot manager, though same problems.

Ubuntu :: Gparted Can't See Ntfs Partitions Of New Win7 Install

Nov 11, 2010

i installed win7 ultimate on a 2TB HD and was hoping to dual-boot it with meerkat, i did a standard install and shrunk the partition using win7 disk management to leave 500GB for ubuntu.problem is ubuntu can't detect the existing win7 install, when selecting advanced setup it just shows one big unallocated partition.

i went back into win7 and extended the partition again, then booted into ubuntu live cd to see if maybe gparted would do the trick. gparted also cannot detect the existing win7 install and just displays unallocated 1.82TB.in terminal if i do 'sudo parted /dev/sda print' i get this message:

Warning: /dev/sda contains GPT signatures, indicating that it has a GPT table. However, it does not have a valid fake msdos partition table, as it should.Perhaps it was corrupted -- possibly by a program that doesn't understand GPT partition tables. Or perhaps you deleted the GPT table, and are now using an msdos partition table. Is this a GPT partition table? Yes/No? ^C

Ubuntu :: Win7 Option Not Found On Grub After Kubuntu 10.10 Install

Apr 5, 2011

I had my Laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1520, running Windows 7 and Windows XP - I had a few gigs of unallocated space, so I decided to install Kubuntu alongside it, worked fine no problem, with the exception of running out of space very quickly - I got fed up with it, and installed Kubuntu over the Windows XP partition (around 80gigs, and the first OS to be installed on the computer). After I installed it.

All was working perfectly until I rebooted to discover I am missing my Windows 7 boot option in GRUB, before I had to press Windows XP Embedded and it opened the boot dialog, but here I dont get the option, is there a GRUB 2 option I can change to allow it to show Windows 7? The Computer works perfectly, it's just the GRUB doesn't show Windows 7, and I'm hesitant to format its old partition and reinstall it due to the fact that it may over ride the grub and leave me without Kubuntu access?

OpenSUSE Install :: No More Peaceful Coexistence Of Win7?

Dec 24, 2009

If I understand correctly, there is no more "Install Linux as a second OS, and Windows will run as it is. Linux won't disturb it". If Grub is installed on MBR, Windows 7 will not install service pack.

If the MBR is left untouched during the installation of Linux, the active flag has to be switched from Windows's partition to Linux's partition. This again will prohibit Windows 7 from installing a service pack. Thus installing Linux as a second OS and giving the computer to somebody who is not expert in partitioning and booting will lead to trouble if Windows is regularly used. Is this correct, and is there a solution as to not creating worries for the Windows users by installing Linux?
