Apr 18, 2010Soon after I installed F12 I realized that I mixed / and /home partitions during the installation, resulting having an enormous / and a relatively small /home.
Since I want to avoid resizing the partitions*, is there any way to make Fedora use a certain amount of disk space on / as part of /home. Is this possible? And if it is, are there any drawbacks?
*I actually tried using a live usb but gparted wouldn't let me do any modifications. The volumes were unmounted though...

Feb 7, 2010I am a major noob to FC12. I need to install Windows 7 Pro and FC12 dual boot. I first used the windows CD to create 1 250 Gig partition on my 500 Gig HD. Of course windows created the 100 MB system partition. I left the rest unpartitioned. Windows installed okay. I then booted to the KDE FC12 Live CD and installed FC12. I specified to use the Free Space remaining on the HD. The installation finished but now only boots into FC12 and does not prompt me for the OS I want to boot.

Jun 1, 2010I've done a search thru the forums on a recent headache but couldn't find anything. now we all know that windows installations knackers the grub boot-up, and it becomes modus-operandi to repair the boot loader, with a live distro. however, in my current dual boot system (vista.sp2/fedora12), i've done a clean install of windows7 over the current windows ntfs partition. as standard, the boot menu would vanish. but when i put in the live-linux cd, gparted now shows the fedora partition (sda6) as LVM2. i'm somewhat of a neophyte with linux, but fedora12, suse11.2 and ubuntu don't seem to yet support this file system. since i don't have critical data on the fedora partition yet, i usually wouldn't mind reformating this part', but the wireless chipset on my laptop cost a fortune on cups of coffee and beer to install, and in addition i used the fedora12 FEL spin and want to keep the installation intact. is there anyway to make the LVM2 indentifier back to ext3 or 4 and repair grub form there (without loosing the current partition kernal etc.)?

The problem is that after installation of win 7 i lost the ability to boot form cd. In bios i still have cd set up to boot first and drive second, but win 7 did something that overrides bios set up. I even tried Esc for boot menu, then i select to boot form cd, but it still boots in windows.

Ubuntu Servers :: Is It Ok To Run A Server Virtually?
Jun 29, 2010I just got me a mac pro 8 core a couple days ago ( Which took forever to save up for). I have parallels installed on the mac and I wanted to know if it is ok to run Ubuntu server virtually in parallels. I got it working perfectly fine but I want to know if its fine for production, as my main use for it is as a web server.
BTW since the mac pro has 12 gigs of ram I allow 4 gigs to ubuntu server and 4 cores on the cpu to ubuntu server. So do you guys think it is fine to run Ubuntu Server 10.04 virtually?

Dec 28, 2010I want to create a dual boot between Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I have done the following:
1. I installed Win7 on my second SATA drive WD740AD.
2. Then I installed Ubuntu on my first SATA drive WD5000A.
When I boot my machine, the machine will always boot linux. I can't even choose Windows 7. My knowledge of Linux is very limited. I have looked for information on the web and found some information about grub but I cant make it work. Mostly all the information is about installing Win7 and Linux on 1 HDD.

Jan 23, 2010I have a share on my home server with all my music in. When I go to a windows PC (Windows 7) and go to network I can see the share, but when I try to connect in ubuntu by going to places>network>windows network. I get the error: "Unable to connect. Failed to retrieve share list from server". However when I try the connect to server option and specify the IP address its fine. I have tried this with the firewall disabled with the same results. I am trying to get my family to use ubuntu and I don't want them to have tp specify an IP address.

Mar 23, 2010I recently bought a 12-cell (extended-life) battery for my HP dv8000 AMD Turion64 laptop. While the extra battery life is spectacular, the machine is virtually unusable when not plugged in. Either the hardware or the OS (I'm not sure which) seems to view each of the 12 cells as a separate battery, so whenever a cell nears depletion and the machine prepares to transition to the next cell, the computer slows to a standstill, as though it were shifting into an extreme version of Powersave mode. This can last for several minutes at a time, during which period all I can do is stare helplessly at my screen.
I have all but disabled Powersave features in the Power Management applet, setting the laptop to Performance mode on both AC and battery power, with Powersave only kicking in below 10%. So that isn't the source of the problem. I have also disabled Compositing and all desktop effects, except the mouse pointer application-icon animations that appear when I open an application, which I can't figure out how to disable. All this to no avail.
Plug the machine back in and it zips along at a merry Linux pace. I don't want to keep it plugged in all the time, though, because a) this is a laptop and therefore should be mobile; and b) keeping a charged battery plugged in drastically shortens its battery life. Besides, this is a brand-new battery; it should still be working fine.
Networking :: Sharing An Internet Connection Virtually - VMWARE
Mar 8, 2009I have no internet in Linux due to my only way to get internet is through my blackberry curve phone sharing ( I think some call this tethering) internet to the pc. It works fine in winblows of course with the provided winblows software, so I booted over to Linux, fired up VMware workstation 6.5, set up the internet in it, and I have internet in my guest os in vmware which is 32 bit xp media center. I right clicked the connection from "network connections" and went to share this connection. Now I'd like to share it to my host os, 64-bit Ubuntu 8.10 in Raid 0. Do I need to be using NAT or Bridged. I've set up internet sharing before but not virtually.

Ubuntu :: GRUB Leaves Win7 Unable To Boot / Enable This?
Jan 2, 2011I am able to get into GRUB and boot Linux, but whenever I select Windows, all I get is an error about a missing boot loader.
After the Windows install disk failed to repair it, I reinstalled the Windows system and then used the Ubuntu live-CD to restore GRUB in order to be able to boot into Linux again. Now I have the same problem as when I started (although the error screen is somewhat different now).
Does anyone know how to break this "evil circle" of mine?
I am using the 10.10 (GRUB 2 in other words).

Is there a single package that will install drivers for nearly every wireless card there is so that I can connect to the internet with out a hassle?
I noticed that the Linux Mint website lists support for more wireless cards as a feature and I am curious whether I can do this for the Ubuntu on my thumbdrive.

Feb 24, 2011I'm attempting to install a small application called Asymptopia Flashcard System on Xubuntu x64. It's unsupported and virtually unknown, so I don't know many details about it aside from what I can gather from the source files. The first step in the installation directions is to type "make lib_install" as root at the command line. I get this output:
Making libasymptopia.so ... compiling Path.C ... Path.C: In member function �void Path::listdir(char*, std::deque<char*, std::allocator<char*> >*): followed by a bunch of errors like this: Path.C:38: error: �strcmp� was not declared in this scope
all for the file Path.C, all of them complaining about various header files not being declared. I have the latest version of gcc installed, so I'm very confused about what the problem is. This application is at least a few years old...maybe there's something out-of-date about the way it includes the header files?

I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

Networking :: After Upgrading From Win7-32 To WIN7-64 Can't Mount Cifs Shares
Jul 21, 2010This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.
First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:
I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.
If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.
From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse11.4 - Clear Up A Free Space In HD To Install Win7 ?
Jul 9, 2011Just installed and started to use the suse11.4 two weeks ago when my Win7 broke down. Now I got a new Win7 recovery disc from my laptop manufacturer, and want to install a Win7 accompanying with the suse11.4.
My question is how to clear up a free space in HD to install win7? Currently, I have 3 partitions that are sda1, sda2 and sda3 with space 2G(swap), 20G(root) and 270G(home) respectively. I want to free up half space from sda3 to install Win7, how to do it without delete the data on it? One weird thing is that my HD totally is 320G, but when I installed SUSE, only 300G was usable and the other 20G is missing until now. The fdisk -l command info. is showed below:

Feb 25, 2011Currently I am running a dual boot with Windows 7 and openSUSE 11.3. Windows has two partitions, one for the system partition and another for the OS. I have 3 Linux partitions (swap, root, and home). Obviously I am running GRUB to boot, but this seems to be impacting my ability to install Windows 7 SP1. I would like to revert back to the Windows boot loader, install the Service Pack, and then revert back to GRUB. How do I do this?

So, I decided to pick up a new disc, slap windows 7 on it and now want to dual boot.Basically I had to do some disc juggling to get windows to play nice. So my windows drive is now first, then my Ubuntu drive second.Its been a while so I'm wondering how involved / what would be the steps to get grub2 to chainload into windows7 (in my head I want to say I'm going to boot into the live cd, mount the windows disc and reinstall the loader to the windows drive since its the first disc in the chain?)
