Ubuntu Networking :: NAS Saving Existing Files Fails?

Aug 26, 2010

I have a really nuisance problem. I have two NAS servers - different makes - both of which work perfectly under Windows XP. I can write new files, save existing files without error. Both servers have drives formatted to FAT32 - the only option - although the OS's are almost certainly an embedded Linux. Both units are recognized by Ubuntu 10.04 - and I can write new files to them both without problem (although the directory does not refresh - I have to reload it). I can also delete without problems. If I try and save over an existing file I get an error "Unexpected error: Invalid argument" - I presume the implied delete is failing but am not sure. New files also seem to be saved with the Read Only flag set.OK - I can work round the problem by deleting the files (that works OK) and saving them anew. Works fine - but a backup is impossible as any changed file will give rise to the error.I have tucked both drives into the hosts files in /etc - although I attach by IP address (which is fixed) anyway.

Ubuntu Servers :: Does Unzip/untar Always Append Files To Existing Folders

Mar 4, 2011

Will unzipping always append files if the directories already exist? What about tar?

I unzipped an archive the archive had 3 folders and dozens of subfolders within those. app, skin, js

The folder I unzipped it to also already had those 3 folders as well as many child folders etc.

My website is still working so I'm just wondering. Is this safe or is there anything I should worry about. The other option was to manually upload each file manually that is in those 3 folders and the dozens of sub folders.

Ubuntu Installation :: Any Effect On Windows Drive During WUBI Install?

May 23, 2011

I used Wubi to do the install and pointed it to D drive because it was basically free except for itunes... anyway, once it had finished, I turned off my laptop, turned it back on and it showed Windows and Ubuntu, I loaded Ubuntu and it said it was continuing installation, anyway it said copying files, and stuff and I didn't know if it was overwriting vista so it would go on the C drive instead of the D drive. Anyway, I just want Ubuntu on D and Vista on C. Is Ubuntu gonna' overwrite Vista?

OpenSUSE Install :: Commands In Boot.local Have No Effect

Jan 29, 2010

I want to turn off CPU throttling, and I notice how each time opensuse boots up, it imposes it.

I would like to know where it does this. I suspect - but actually I don't really know - if it's the HAL daemon that does this. Could be.

In any case, rather than have to key it in each time, I put the relevant commands (cpufreq-set) in boot.local. No effect.

I suspect boot.local might not be the best place for such a heavy duty command like this one.

Are there any there places I could put it so that it executes automatically?

OpenSUSE Install :: Shutdown / Restart Screen Distortion With Logout Desktop Effect

Mar 28, 2011

When trying to "Leave" the system (either via the small button on the lower right of the taskbar or by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Leave") the logout / shutdown / restart screen comes up. I have the "Logout" desktop effect activated, which is supposed to desaturated the background when the Leave screen appears. However, instead of simply greying out the background, the image on the desktop and the rest of the screen also gets slightly distorted, with seemingly random distortion effects cropping up all over the place (e.g. horizontal lines or large blurs).

These distortions are different every time the Leave screen comes up. The Leave screen itself is displayed fine, and apart from the dodgy background I have no other issues with the whole process (the system shuts down or restarts properly according to my choice). I am using the Radeon drivers, and all other desktop effects I have on (Magic lamb, cover switch, present windows, etc) work fine and without a hitch. It's only the Logout effect that seems to glitch. Are the distortions intentionally created by the effect in order to emphasize the focus on the Leave screen?

Ubuntu :: Making An Existing Install USB Bootable?

Feb 19, 2011

I've searched extensively on Google and here and can't seem to find anything addressing what I'm trying to do. The motherboard of my notebook (Ubuntu 9.10) completely died earlier this week. I pulled the hard drive and got an external case for it. Is it possible to have it boot into my original Ubuntu via USB?

Trying to do so as-is comes up with multiple Grub errors (Invalid Environment block, file not found, etc.) and I've tried addressing these Grub errors separately with no luck, but I have a feeling I'm skipping a basic step somewhere to make a primary drive USB bootable without reformatting.

Ubuntu :: Install Firefox 4 Alongside Existing Ff 5 On 11.04

Jun 13, 2011

Before you start thinking that I made a mistake with the title of the thread, or thinking that FF5 has not been ye unvelied (it is, its a beta AFAIK), read my story: I dont know how it happened, I think it may be a ppa, but I dont know which one (could it be independent third party sources?). Other ideas are welcomed. Thing is: when I click the FF icon I access to ff5, and there are a number of aps that are not compatible, thus, my need to keep using ff4. I googled and found: [URL]... and tried to follow the instructions: ff5 works without issues ff4: created a new directory in /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4, where I extracted ff4.tar.bzz.

I have also run Code: firefox -profilemanager and created 2 profiles: Firefox5 and Firefox4 Firefox5 leads to ff5 without issues, I didnt change anything Firefox4: I have tried to link it to the current folder of ff4, so it reads: /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4. Launchers: the ff icon leads to ff5, no issues newly created ff4 launcher reads: /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4 -no-remote -P "Firefox4" but when clicked:. Could not launch application, Failed to execute child process "/home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4" (Permission denied)

Debian :: Install On Existing Grub2 ?

Feb 21, 2010

I have been using linux for a few years but I am merely an end-user and many things are still beyond me. I have a machine booting XP and Ubuntu 9.10 with grub2. I would like to try Debian as an installed os, and I have used the netinstall and put Debian on sda6.

During the installation I was asked where to put grub...as I did not want to mess up the mbr which has grub 2 I choose to install Debian's grub to itself on /dev/sda6 ...maybe because of the usb-netinstall menu.lst eneded up with (hd 1,5) I changed to 0,5.

Anyway the problem is...after running update-grub from Ubuntu's grub2, Debian shows up, but will not boot. It seems to go most of the way through loading the kernel then Hangs at, "Begin: waiting for root files..."
