Can you repair an existing install with a distro CD, IE Run the install with a switch to just repair rather than "install".I have messed up a Ubuntu 10.4 Netbook install by playing with the Mount Utility trying to mount a SD card, and now my netbook will not boot.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got my laptop repaired (by the manufacturer). Linux would install fine before, but not now, as all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor. Note, I've only tried KDE versions of software since my laptop came back, so I don't know if that's the problem. I tried linux mint 9 and kubuntu 10.04. And all I get after a while is described above. I also tried some different install options, because I'm able to get to the menu to choose which type of install I want, but the other options led to the same thing, and it would sometimes display a bunch of numbers and then "EH ok" or something. the numbers on the left keep increasing, and eventually I get to the splash screen, where it freezes, and repeats the process.

I have a dual-boot system with Windows XP and I'm wondering if it would be OK in getting the DVD and selecting update? Or do I have to change the boot log etc?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy system got stuffed after a trivial online update, it downloaded a new kernel update, I rebooted and now it won't boot at all saying "FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop/modules.dep: No such file or directory", then some stuff, then "mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext4'", "could not mount root filesystem"... It's on my laptop without a DVD drive and I've only got a LiveCD USB stick which doesn't have a YAST system repair tool. Is there any way to repair a system without a DVD drive?

Under Other Options there used to be a repair function. I can't find the repair facility in 11.3. Is it now located somewhere else, or has it been removed?
So I have been messing around with the new 10.04 and I managed to screw it up. When I started to log off, I closed the lid to my laptop so it would hibernate, but instead the screen went black and I could only see the cursor. It stayed like that for several minutes so I shut it down manually. When I booted it up again, it froze on the splash/loading screen and I haven't been able to boot it since. I've tried to boot in recovery mode, but I think my campus internet interferes with the downloading of the necessary files from the internet. Is there any way to boot a recovery mode from the install disc? Or am I SOL?
View 6 Replies View Relatedi have a backtrack install that i would like to keep while installing suse for an everyday OS; i start the install process but when it gets to partitioning the hard drive, it doesnt seem to recognize anything already being on there; it just gives me the setup for suse, ie:
sda1 ext3 = OS sda2 or sda5 = swap. do i have to configure a partition scheme? i installed ubuntu on a desktop alongside windows very easily due to grub graphical install/partition; is there not a similar function for suse?
both root and home partition have suddenly become corrupt, and the repair tool from the installation disk just loops (Do you want to repair? Yes! Do you want to repair? Yes! Do you...).

but I know a fair amount about the OS. I really like openSuSE, and I was trying to install 11.2 on my laptop, completely blank hdd. It installed just fine;I used the default options (the partition scheme was /boot, swap, root, /home) and started thesktop without a hitch. However, when I restarted, my BIOS would not even recognize an OS on the hard drive. I was also unable to boot using the installation DVD. I tried to use the repair feature, and I would either get a message saying that the boot loader was corrupt,d could not be repaired, or that the package database didn't match the version of openSUSE installed. I've tried re-installing multiple times, all with the same results. I have tried different partition schemes and I've tried different booting settings, such as enabling boot from root or /boot partition

I have an old advent laptop and I tried to install Opensuse from DVD on it. I followed the installation as normal but when I tried to boot it said some sort of check was forced and then I have to enter the admin/root password upon doing this I got the message system repair # in red. I have tried to repair the system through the installation DVD and tried re-installing it but I still get the same message.

The openSUSE 11.3 dvd for x86 now only gives a "system rescue" option which leads to command line directl. Where have been "the repair the installed system" tools? How can we access them now? View 9 Replies View RelatedI got the blank screen when trying to install openSUSE 11.3 x64, so I was able to successfully install by choosing: Kernel (F6) > Safe Mode
Now I am trying to build my wireless driver, and I also notice that my touchpad is not scrolling. I had this OS installed in Windows 7 through VirtualBox before doing the clean installation, and I remember the touchpad scrolling.
I am thinking that by choosing Kernel Safe Mode to install openSUSE, that it did not install all the repositories, and it is why I am running into some difficulty.
what I need to do to fix my installation as if I had not installed in Safe Mode.
I've searched extensively on Google and here and can't seem to find anything addressing what I'm trying to do. The motherboard of my notebook (Ubuntu 9.10) completely died earlier this week. I pulled the hard drive and got an external case for it. Is it possible to have it boot into my original Ubuntu via USB?
Trying to do so as-is comes up with multiple Grub errors (Invalid Environment block, file not found, etc.) and I've tried addressing these Grub errors separately with no luck, but I have a feeling I'm skipping a basic step somewhere to make a primary drive USB bootable without reformatting.
Before you start thinking that I made a mistake with the title of the thread, or thinking that FF5 has not been ye unvelied (it is, its a beta AFAIK), read my story: I dont know how it happened, I think it may be a ppa, but I dont know which one (could it be independent third party sources?). Other ideas are welcomed. Thing is: when I click the FF icon I access to ff5, and there are a number of aps that are not compatible, thus, my need to keep using ff4. I googled and found: [URL]... and tried to follow the instructions: ff5 works without issues ff4: created a new directory in /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4, where I extracted ff4.tar.bzz.
I have also run Code: firefox -profilemanager and created 2 profiles: Firefox5 and Firefox4 Firefox5 leads to ff5 without issues, I didnt change anything Firefox4: I have tried to link it to the current folder of ff4, so it reads: /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4. Launchers: the ff icon leads to ff5, no issues newly created ff4 launcher reads: /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4 -no-remote -P "Firefox4" but when clicked:. Could not launch application, Failed to execute child process "/home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4" (Permission denied)
If I'll install this will it effect my files?

I run the Linux Mint in live mode, Gparted says: "unallocated 465.76GiB". But when I go to Menu -> Computer then I can see each and every partition, I can mount them and browse them properly.I tried Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 with the same result as described above.
