I want to turn off CPU throttling, and I notice how each time opensuse boots up, it imposes it.
I would like to know where it does this. I suspect - but actually I don't really know - if it's the HAL daemon that does this. Could be.
In any case, rather than have to key it in each time, I put the relevant commands (cpufreq-set) in boot.local. No effect.
I suspect boot.local might not be the best place for such a heavy duty command like this one.
Are there any there places I could put it so that it executes automatically?

View 14 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to "Leave" the system (either via the small button on the lower right of the taskbar or by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Leave") the logout / shutdown / restart screen comes up. I have the "Logout" desktop effect activated, which is supposed to desaturated the background when the Leave screen appears. However, instead of simply greying out the background, the image on the desktop and the rest of the screen also gets slightly distorted, with seemingly random distortion effects cropping up all over the place (e.g. horizontal lines or large blurs).
These distortions are different every time the Leave screen comes up. The Leave screen itself is displayed fine, and apart from the dodgy background I have no other issues with the whole process (the system shuts down or restarts properly according to my choice). I am using the Radeon drivers, and all other desktop effects I have on (Magic lamb, cover switch, present windows, etc) work fine and without a hitch. It's only the Logout effect that seems to glitch. Are the distortions intentionally created by the effect in order to emphasize the focus on the Leave screen?

It took me 3 tries to get is ISO image that matched the md5 checksum on the download site. At 8 - 10 hours each it was a PITA. The first simply aborted 1/3 of the way through (HTTP direct link). The second used wget, got a full file but the checksums didi not match. The magic method was Bitorrent.
All this has left me with an uneasy feeling about the contents of the DVD created from the ISO. Is there a way to test the DVD contents?

It's not an option to clone the HDD again, I know how to do it if I had only cloned the single partition by itself. I hope it's still possible with the current image.

The ext3 partition on the 250GB drive called "datas" is an old partition that I created while I was still using Intrepid... and it works just fine. However the partition called "archives", which I created during the installation of Karmic, doesn't seem to work properly. For some reason I can't write any files or folders on it. Why is that?

sda8 /SUSE 11.2I then made some changes with gparted (from PartedMagic 5.5) to create an ntfs partition to simulate a condition where someone may want to delete that partition and use the free space for linux. I then deleted that partition, sda2 then sda5 (swap) and taking some screenshots, went about resizing partitions to use that free space and then recreate swap. the intention being to create a basic guide on how to go about this.I have previously only had my swap at the end of the extended partition, deleting itand recreating it later had caused little trouble.I realize that a resize/move operation would have been a better choice.What I was not expecting was the partition number changes that occurred.

View 9 Replies View RelatedAlright, so, I booted using linux live, and was poking around Gparted, and was going to test some things on my extra hdd (80gb, IDE) -I thought that extra hard drive was selected, what I clicked Create Partition Table. Apparently, it was my primary hdd, (250gb Sata, Windows Vista x64) that was selected. I think I may have tried to cancel it after a few seconds, realizing what was happening, but yeah, it now shows the entire hdd as unallocated space. I immediately shut down the computer, pulled out linux live and tried to boot to windows, but I immediately got an error saying the disk couldn't boot, asking for a system disk.
There was a thread with a guy who had a similar thing happen to him, but the thread dropped off... [URL]

Opened testdisk for me, but now that testdisk is open, I'm not really sure what I need to do. I'm guessing that the boot sector on that hdd is gone. Are my files gone forever? There are some files that I don't have backed up on there, that I'm hoping are not gone. I would love it even more if I could somehow just repair that boot sector, and not have to reinstall everything on my machine.
On a Debian Linux box, SVN Server is installed. In the partition where SVN was installed, Free disk space is causing anxiety, hence started creating new instances in a new partition, though I am able to get the first screen (it prompts for username and password), I am unable to login even though the username and passwords are correct.

After 2-3 partition an extended partition automatically created in which I am not able to create specified capacity i.e., say I want 150g of /photos partition, the /videos partition is automatically reduced and a free space at the end appears. Some free space is always there which i am not able to understand. Nevertheless i clicked to create, but I get an error viz. 'device not created'.
I'm a newbie despite using Ubuntu most of the time for nearly 3 years. There are some files which are created automatically in one of my ntfs partition. The files are khq, khp, kht, an autorun inf file and others. They seem to have been created while I was using ubuntu and even though I delete them,they appear again later. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Western Digital 3TB USB drive connected to a Raspberry Pi 2 running Raspbian Jessie. I created an 30GB ext4 system partition and a NTFS Data partition using the remainder of the drive. I formatted the NTFS partition as follows:
sudo mkfs.ntfs -Q -L Data /dev/sda2
The drive works fine on the Pi but when I connect it to a Windows 7 pc the pc doesn't recognise the format of the Data partition and can't access it.
On the Pi I ran:
$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda2

I'm dual booting windows vista and ubuntu hardy on a multi-partitioned Dell D630. I created a partition using mkfs -t ntfs. Linux has no trouble reading/writing to it, but every time I boot into windows, chkdsk tries to "fix" the partition, fails, and tells me that the partition is corrupted. Can anybody suggest a way to convince vista that the partition is indeed ok, or else another way to create the partition so that vista can recognize it?
