I want to install Ubuntu on a PC and have just started reading the Ubuntu pocket guide.All the install options seem to require a pre-existing OS ("dual mount" and so on).But I want to install Ubuntu on a new PC and especially do not wish to pay the Microsoft Windows license fee. I want Ubuntu to be the only OS on the box.

i have a backtrack install that i would like to keep while installing suse for an everyday OS; i start the install process but when it gets to partitioning the hard drive, it doesnt seem to recognize anything already being on there; it just gives me the setup for suse, ie:
sda1 ext3 = OS sda2 or sda5 = swap. do i have to configure a partition scheme? i installed ubuntu on a desktop alongside windows very easily due to grub graphical install/partition; is there not a similar function for suse?
I have an existing unix user that some how didnt make it into the copy over to our LDAP server. How do I add an existing unix user to an existing LDAP directory? Will ldapadd work? I was under the impression ldapadd required an ldif file to work properly.

The motherboard of my notebook (Ubuntu 9.10) completely died earlier this week. I pulled the hard drive and got an external case for it. Is it possible to have it boot into my original Ubuntu via USB?
Trying to do so as-is comes up with multiple Grub errors (Invalid Environment block, file not found, etc.) and I've tried addressing these Grub errors separately with no luck, but I have a feeling I'm skipping a basic step somewhere to make a primary drive USB bootable without reformatting.
Before you start thinking that I made a mistake with the title of the thread, or thinking that FF5 has not been ye unvelied (it is, its a beta AFAIK), read my story: I dont know how it happened, I think it may be a ppa, but I dont know which one (could it be independent third party sources?). Other ideas are welcomed. Thing is: when I click the FF icon I access to ff5, and there are a number of aps that are not compatible, thus, my need to keep using ff4. I googled and found: [URL]... and tried to follow the instructions: ff5 works without issues ff4: created a new directory in /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4, where I extracted ff4.tar.bzz.
I have also run Code: firefox -profilemanager and created 2 profiles: Firefox5 and Firefox4 Firefox5 leads to ff5 without issues, I didnt change anything Firefox4: I have tried to link it to the current folder of ff4, so it reads: /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4. Launchers: the ff icon leads to ff5, no issues newly created ff4 launcher reads: /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4 -no-remote -P "Firefox4" but when clicked:. Could not launch application, Failed to execute child process "/home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4" (Permission denied)
If I'll install this will it effect my files?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to install Linux Mint, but it cannot detect my existing partitions.I have a 500GB HDD, splitted in three partitions, on c: having a Win7 installed, and on d: and e: a lot of personal data.I tried to install Linux Mint, but the installer says there is no other OS installed and there is no any partition at all. I run the Linux Mint in live mode, Gparted says: "unallocated 465.76GiB". But when I go to Menu -> Computer then I can see each and every partition, I can mount them and browse them properly.I tried Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 with the same result as described above.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been using linux for a few years but I am merely an end-user and many things are still beyond me. I have a machine booting XP and Ubuntu 9.10 with grub2. I would like to try Debian as an installed os, and I have used the netinstall and put Debian on sda6.
During the installation I was asked where to put grub...as I did not want to mess up the mbr which has grub 2 I choose to install Debian's grub to itself on /dev/sda6 ...maybe because of the usb-netinstall menu.lst eneded up with (hd 1,5) I changed to 0,5.
Anyway the problem is...after running update-grub from Ubuntu's grub2, Debian shows up, but will not boot. It seems to go most of the way through loading the kernel then Hangs at, "Begin: waiting for root files..."
I am using Suse linux 10 currently I have gcc 4.1.2.. I want to install gcc 3.4.2 .

It is apparently a test fix for the touchpad on the newer Dell laptops. I want to test drive it a bit. Otherwise, if someone could point me in the right direction as to custom compile a Fedora 13 x64 disc including this patch, that would be great.
On my Desktop I am experiencing a very weird behavior. First of all, I would like to mention that I am posting from the very same machine...just under Windows (which tends me to roll our hardware issues).
Next, a short history I installed 11.2 on my machine when it came out last year. I upgraded my hardware (new mainboard, cpu, ...) without reinstalling. Everything went fine I upgraded to KDE 4.4...still everything ok I did a system upgrade to 11.3 final using zypper And there it starts. After the upgrade, the first boot didnt work as expected (the system just hang). So I just did a restart and 11.3 was up and running. Now, since last week, I cannot boot my system at all. The screen just shows me the boot-splash but the progress bar isnt moving a thing. So I started with the option splash=verbose which did not show me a single line of output. The system just hangs right after the GRUB selection occured. So I decided to download 11.3, burn it to a disc and reinstall it. Well...this doesnt work either At least it shows me some lines of output, which look fine, but some lines after starting KDM the screen goes black and thats it. The only way I got something was when I started the installation in Textmode. I was able to log in but I dont know what to do then. I ran yast2 but it didnt look like I could install the system that way.It would be nice to get it running with my home-partition still in place.

I currently have Redhat 5.2 installed on a server and this has been setup with Oracle 10g Applications installed and configured by the developers at my company.
I have now been asked to install Redhat 5.4 so we can move onto Oracle 11g.
The question i need help with is... Can i update my current Redhat 5.2 with Redhat 5.4 without losing my current setup and configurations?
I have had a search around and found a command called 'yum' but this looks like it is only used to install packages and security updates etc.
as the tags suggest, i'd like a fresh install of linux using grub2, and partition my harddrive

Now I am wondering if it is possible to add a partition and install Mac OS X Snow Leopard alongside Ubuntu, for dual boot purposes. I have seen a lot of documentation for doing this the other way around--adding a Ubuntu partition to an existing Mac OS X installation, but I haven't found an answer for adding OSX to existing Ubuntu. View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having some (well, a lot actually) of problems trying to get OpenSUSE 11.2 installed on my home PC. I am attempting to set up a dual boot configuration with Windows 7 installed on an bios Nvidia RAID 0.I was able to shrink the partition in Windows, and rebooted onto the net install for OpenSUSE (the MD5 validated DVD install failed multiple burns with "Repository not found"). I get into the graphical installer portion with no problems off the net install CD. However, the installer is not recognizing that there is an existing RAID 0. It lists the 2 SATA disks in the RAID separately. I can click on SDA1, and both SDB and SDB1 and it shows the disks, but does not recognize any existing partitions. If I click on SDA I get an immediate segfault in YaST and drop back to the text mode installer menu. It is loading the nv_sata module just fine.
From forum searches and google it seems that this is not usually a problem. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 with the Nvidia Nforce 570 chipset running an AMD X2 64 3800+. Removing the stripeset and redoing it as Linux software RAID is not an option, I do not have enough space for a total backup/restore. Anything I do has to be nondestructive to the existing Windows installation.I really want to have a linux installation but between the DVD installer failing and now this issue I am about ready to give up on it.
In the near future I will be obliged to change my computer. Currently, my system is OpenSuse 11.2 with KDE 4.5.3 on a dual-boot (with WinVista) laptop. I plan to have the new machine again be dual-boot (Win7).
First question: Is there a way to "describe" the current system in a way that, after the initial partitioning and probably a basic installation of OpenSuse 11.2, makes it easy to reproduce the current OpenSuse 11.2 installation (i.e., installed packages, profiles; more?) on the new machine? This would reduce manual work to copying some system files (e.g., /etc/csh.cshrc and similar) and of course /home/username etc.
Second question: Same as first, but this time with a change to OpenSuse 11.3 or the soon to come OpenSuse 11.4. A potential initial installation of OpenSuse 11.2 would be possible.
As every time when a new OpenSuse Version arrives, I tried to install 11.4 (I have 11.2 ans 11.3 on separate partitions, + a Windows 7 that already was there when I bought my computer). Previous versions always recognized existing installations and added them to the Grub list, 11.4 doesen't... it merely recognizes the Windows. This is blocking me from testing it before adopting, as I always do, as I don't know how to add these entries manually; I'm too afraid not to be able to add the entries once installed, and not being able to use my older versions in case I have troubles. What went wrong in this release that developers forgot this important part? How I could manually add my entries for 11.2 and 11.3?

I need to migrate this to an OpenSUSE 11.2 server (cannot use a later version due to the availability of a binary-only module - that is just the way it is). When I fire up the installer, I cannot seem to find an option to mount the encrypted disk (/dev/sda) which has the LVM2 structure. I do not want to lose /home (logical LVM2 volume), so a clean blank slate install is not an option.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSystem: Lenovo R61i, that had Ubunta installed, removed and Vista Home Pre. installed. Plenty of hardware power. Want to install a Knoppix 6.0.1 from an existing CD I have. I want to be able to run both systems on the laptop (dual boot)? I have partitioned the hard drive using vista, so there is now a partition that I believe is Lenovo rescue, the main large C space, and the new partition about 6.4 gb that vista shrank out that is not assigned. When I try to install the Knoppix it just keeps loading in and ends up running live off the CD without installing to the hard drive.
I have stopped the loading sequence in different places, but don't know what to enter or where. I also wanted to install it onto my 64 gb flash drive that has nothing installed but comes up showing that it is fat 32. I have tried to install to the flash drive from the live running Knoppix under install to usb drive, it finds the drive, I select it, and the next window says there is no such file. So, that's my story and I'm stickin to it. All I want to do is get this system onto the laptop or flash so I don't ever have to deal with Microsoft Windows again!

I've been using Debian and Ubuntu derivatives for the last couple of years, so I'm comfortable using the terminal and possibly doing some more advanced stuff.

i have grub1 working and chaonloading truecrypt loader if i choose "win7" in grub1 menu I want to install a new kubuntu (no upgrade) I have read that that there are problems with grub2 and truecrypt actually a bug that grub2 dont chainloads truecrypt boot loader many ppl seem to have problems with grub2 then i read somewhere that ubuntu install is not asking for grub2 to be installed and just installing it. is this right?
i think at least for the alternative install cd its wrong. i installed it on another pc and it asked me! it works for win7 and Ubuntu and i guess its grub2 but there is no truecrypt installed anyway, i wanted to ask is the live cd installer asks me for grub2 and what is the best and easiest way to stay with my grub and just change the menu.lst to the new kernel (i guess there will be one)
