This might seem dumb, but I have a wifi applet stuck on the upper left corner of the desktop (on the desktop, not on any panel) that I can't get rid. I've never seen this before.When on panel there is kind of a "handle" that I can right click which then I can "remove from panel. There is no such handle on the desktop, if I right click on the applet it would just display the wifi menu.

View 3 Replies View RelatedBasically, I chose to give Ubuntu Studio another try (after it had annoyed me with it's lack of wifi), but the problem is that there's no network manager applet in the indicator area (i added it in the top right, the panel's set up as it would be in normal Ubuntu)Using Wifi Radar, i think that the wifi card works in the preempt kernel, it's just that i don't want to use Wifi Radar all the time, can prove to be annoying.
When i start nm-applet, a small space opens up in the indicator applet. I'm not sure if that's something important.Has someone managed to get this to work? (i've installed network-manager and network-manager-applet)
if some options are not really described but i use the german Version. I am new with Ubuntu and Network Manager. Everything ist working fine, but when i start my Netbook i always have to switch on my wifi by my self. Now my question: is there any way to give nm-applet the information with some start option to start with wifi swiched on? Installed Lucid yesterday. Rebooted and lucid seen my wifi connection but after a few mins drops the connection and will not re-connect. Now, I cannot get it to connect at al even though the WPA password is correct, and rebooting to Win7 shows no problems there.Looks like it's back to go old wicd,

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having issues with wifi on my Lenovo X220. What has occurred is that the network applet in the notification bar no longer shows me any wireless network options. When I click on the applet, the drop down shows me: Wired network: disconnected (greyed out), VPN connections, Enable networking (checked), Connection information (greyed out), and Edit connections. Missing is Wireless connections. This occurred "out of the blue" in the middle of using the computer (i.e. NOT just after a reboot or new driver installation, etc.)
I have noted that:
1. Wired ethernet works just fine.
2. Wireless (wifi) works when I boot into Windows 7 or into a fresh Ubuntu USB Start up disk (implying that this is a software issue, not hardware).
3. The hardware led for wifi is OFF (whereas the Bluetooth light is on.) In Windows or using a fresh ubuntu from USB, this light turns on normally.
This may be irrelevant, but the issue started yesterday when I noticed that the trackpoint scrolling that I had enabled using gpointing-device-settings was not working. I ran that app and checked the settings, which were normal. I then reset the computer, and found the trackpoint was working just fine, but I had no wifi. A few resets later, the problem was not solved.

I upgraded from 9.0X to 10.04 on my Sony Vaio VGN-TZ398U which has an internal Sprint mobile broadband card. The card operates properly along with the wireless. The problem that I am having since upgrading is that the Network Manager Applet icon that looks like a cell phone bar display does not show in the notification area at all unless there is a known wireless (wifi) network nearby.
Clarification: If I am in my car, the icon does not show which then makes it impossible to connect using the mobile broadband functions of the Network Manager Applet ( version 0.8 ). If I am in my office with a known wireless network, the icon shows and then I can switch to the mobile card.
I have tried removing the notification area from the panel and adding it again. I have done the same with the indicator applet. Neither has solved this problem.
I have Debian 8.2 with KDE 4.14 and everything runs perfect, except for the internet connection. This problem happens randomly when I turn on my machine. Sometimes when the desktop loads, the connection is already settled.
But sometimes when the desktop loads, the wifi icon is still loading and keeps stuck at "setting network address". Since this problem happens randomly I really don't know what is happening here. My wifi chip is this:

The auto connect feature of NetworkManager Applet (version 0.7.997) isn't working on my system. If the WiFi connection dies, Network Manager doesn't detect that the connection has been lost and try to reestablish the connection. I have to manually click on the WiFi hotspot to reestablish the connection. This appears to be the case both while the computer is running and when I first boot it up (i.e. when booting, if the first attempt at establishing a WiFi connection doesn't succeed, Network Manager doesn't retry or try another hotspot).Is this "normal" behavior for Network Manager? If not, does anyone know a fix? Here's some more info about my system:

There are so many packed icons there is no place to grab the nav bar. I have removed several icons but I am getting down to the essentials. Is there an alternative way to move the nav bar that doesn't involve dragging it with my mouse pointer?

Tried recreating ~/Desktop, but no luck. Gconf-editor no luck either since checking or unchecking the home folder as destop does nothing. Any ideas how to fix this problem?

Sometimes I forget I am not using windows. But my ipod stopped working ok. When I connected it ubuntu started opening file manager windows, like five per seconds, in a few seconds my bar was flooded with file manager windows. I fixed the problem getting rid of my iPod, now I am using a cheapy but more stable Phillips gogear. The problem is that theres an ipod icon stuck on my desktop and I dont know how to get rid of it.

I have installed ubuntu 10.10 on my pc and whenever I login to the desktop it shows the gnome panels, icons, wallpaper and then immediately goes back to the login screen. If I try to login again, it does the same thing all over again but sometimes it works. Is there any way to fix this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI created a new Ubuntu 9.10 VM, and it installed fine. I then told it to upgrade, and was running it fullscreen and left it for several hours. Now the machine is stuck at full-screen, and Ctrl+Alt do not unstick it! I can see the mouse cursor, but cannot press Alt to bring up a menu or anything. I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a console, and logged in as root and tried to kill-9 the process, (qemu-dm), but it won't die! Any ideas on how I can unstick the VM? I have lots of applications running and transferring data now, so I don't want to reboot the box for several days until the file transfers are done.

when using desktop effects windows seem to get stuck in mid-animation and produce ghost windows which will disappear and go back to normal if i click on a blank area of the desktop.Its not a huge problem, everything else works really well and the issue goes away when i turn the desktop effects off. was wondering if anyone else has seen this?? I am running SLI on quad nvidia gpus so maybe this is a driver issue??

View 13 Replies View RelatedI've got a very weird behaviour with my brand-new Slackware64 13.37 KDE 4.5.5 system. I've so far just installed some basic software from sbopkg and the fglrx-driver.
Whenever I pass the red line as seen in the attached snapshot from within the marked area, my mouse pointer gets stuck at the line for roughly one second and then moves on.
Approaching from the outside this does not happen and if I'm staying inside the area, it moves normally as it does at the rest of my desktop.
Turning on/off compositing does not change this, as well as removing the widgets from the panel or locking them. I always get stuck there.
I found out that it has to do with the setting of my external screen via D-Sub. If I switch back to my laptop screen as main, the problem disappears.
I thought I was removing the chat status piece of the indicator applet (I know what it is now, didn't then), but I accidentally removed the whole thing. Now when I figured out how to put it back on the panel, I can't get it back to where it was (which was to the RIGHT of the system date/time applet). How can I do this as well as move the indicator applet that has the volume control in it?

I was using both the Indicator Applet and the Notification Area applets in my panel but realized that very often when I started the system, the icons of these applet appeared mixed. Some items were duplicated (for example the keyboard indicator) where others were missing (sometimes the battery indicator, sometimes the sound indicator, etc). When that happened I had to remove them and add them to panel again.
This seems to be a bug that makes one applet interfere with the other (maybe because there are some items that appear in both but when you add both initially nothing is duplicated but after a system restart the problem happens).After searching for some way to fix this apparent bug without success I decided to remove the Indicator applet and keep just the Notification Area.
It works but then I don't have the sound applet anymore, because it was part of the Indicator Applet.
I searched for a standalone sound applet but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any such applet that I could install in the system? If I can find any it would be fine to me and I would be satisfied using just the Notification Area.
Had ubuntu for a few years left came back last month. I lost the indicator applet in the panel. I don't know what I did to get it back. I feel like this is a very very simple thing to fix but I just can't find it. Here is a pic of what i'm talking about.

Doing so resulted in me losing the ability to control the sound from the panel, which I value so I put it back.Once I restored the indicator applet to the panel, the nm-applet went missing. I'm still connecting to my home network with no problem, so the function is there, but the little icon that updates when you're trying to connect, shows signal strength, and other available networks is now missing. This I've searched the problem and haven't found any solutions that work, I think because of the new applet integration, but I'm very surprised this hasn't been found by someone yet!
