What is the minimum CPU or processor required for a Debian stable installation with no GUI, desktop environment, or window manager? I can find specs for all minimum hardware capabilities except for the processor on a system with no desktop GUI. (Debian Stable GNU/Linux Installation Guide 3.4 Meeting Minimum Hardware Requirements) section 2.1.2: CPU, Main Boards, and Video Support and Linux Hardware Compatibility Section 4.1—Intel make it seem like any i386 CPU is good enough.

I have an old PowerBook G4 that I would like to use as a 'dummy' computer for learning wireless penetration (WEP/WPA attacks) more effectively. I had been using a wireless router, but I gave it away I can use Mac OS X to share an ethernet connection over wifi, but this is _very_ un-configurable. You get two options only, WEP and a key-length. So, I would like to install someway to make this wireless connection more configurable.

I have Debian 8.2 with KDE 4.14 and everything runs perfect, except for the internet connection. This problem happens randomly when I turn on my machine. Sometimes when the desktop loads, the connection is already settled.
But sometimes when the desktop loads, the wifi icon is still loading and keeps stuck at "setting network address". Since this problem happens randomly I really don't know what is happening here. My wifi chip is this:
Code: Select all01:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 130 (rev 34)
This is the problem:
I installed Debian with non-free firmware because of this chip.

This might seem dumb, but I have a wifi applet stuck on the upper left corner of the desktop (on the desktop, not on any panel) that I can't get rid. I've never seen this before. When on panel there is kind of a "handle" that I can right click which then I can "remove from panel. There is no such handle on the desktop, if I right click on the applet it would just display the wifi menu.

I can't get wifi in my Desktop 64 installation, but I can in LiveCDs and in Windows. I have an AirLink101 wireless-n card using the Ralink RT2860 driver (which apparently is not installed in Ubuntu Desktop, but IS installed in Server. attempted modprobe rt2860sta resulted in no such luck, citing a missing server directory.) [URL].... details my struggles to get this card operating in Server. I thought I might have more luck with Desktop, but to no avail. The real question is: WHY would this card work in LiveCD but NOT in Desktop or Server installations?

I have a laptop with Ubuntu 9.10. And I want to connect it to Internet using wifi. Also I have desktop with Ubuntu 9.10 (another desktop with Win XP, but for some day it will run under Ubuntu too ). I want one of this these desktops to share wifi with laptop. I think that a wifi adapter is a way to solve this problem. I found a D-Link dwa-110. i've read on forums that someone successfully installed drivers [URL]. Is there any other ways to share wifi with laptop (only 1 laptop needs to be shared with)? Had someone connected desktop with D-Link dwa-110 and laptop (as I want)? Both desktops connected to Internet via wire.

Ok, i bought this usb wifi adapter: [URL]
used these drivers(dident work at all without it, no lights even): [URL]
and i first tryed it out on my netbook (aao, intel atom ubuntu 10.04 32bit), i ran make, then make install, done! i pugged it in and im happly using a 300mbps wifi network.
then i try it on my desktop (custom, AMD phenom x4, ubuntu 10.04 64bit), i install, no errors, then when i plug in the wifi usb, it lights up, then stops, the mouse also stops working(bouth keyboard and mouse is usb) but the kb still works. aftor restarting keeping it pluged in, ubuntu never finishes the splash screen, just stops their, i try again without the wifi and it works, i keeped trying and now the whole comp frezes, even the kb, and i see the system monetor is also frozen, what do i do?
one last thing, it works on bouth my netbook and desktop under windows 7, only on my desktop it wont work on ubuntu.

I'm trying to set up the Remote Desktop and am not getting anywhere. No matter what I do it seems that I'm only able to set it up to be viewable locally, over the local intranet. Do I need to open specific ports on a router? If so, what ports? Is there anything else I need to configure?

I am creating a music server. I have the video of the box connected to my TV. This is an OLD computer, so I'm trying to lean up the normal software running as much as possible. I have the computer logging in as guest if no one logs in within 30 secs. Right now, it logs into gnome for everyone. Btw, I'm running FC8 on this computer. It is running gdm. I would like it to have it use something lighter like twm when logged in as guest. But I still want a full gnome session when anyone else logs in.

Setting up desktop (9.04) behind router for remote access by latptop (9.10) I am setting up desktop (9.04) behind router for remote access by latptop (9.10). Rationale: All of my files are on my desktop HD, but I am often out of my home needing to work on my files. It is becoming labour intensive to keep track of the files I make/change and try to copy them on my non-connected desktop/laptop.
Dream: Able to remote access and modify my desktop files from my laptop (while the files remain on the desktop). Request: A simple, GUI, basic, non-technical guide how to set it up!
What I know: 1.I was going to use the 'Remote Desktop' VNC connection under System->Preferences. However, if I understand this correctly, this only secures my computer (i.e. Locks the front door of my desktop) and the data streamed between them is not encrypted.[URL]..
2.Then I need to set up my router to accept the connection from my laptop.
3.Then I will need to use SSH to secure the info sent between them. This is the bit I don't really have a good grip on.

I have a USB WiFi adapter that my Ubuntu desktop install (10.10) automatically detects, and it works great. I just used the alternate installer to set up an old box as a server, and it doesn't install the driver for the adapter. lsusb finds the adapter, but I don't get a wlan* listed in /dev/. how I can determine what module(s) are used to run this adapter on the desktop so I can load them on the older box? Or is there some package I should install from the CD to help auto-detect the adapter?

How that can be done in linux?

I'm running opensuse 11.2 on my Asus 1000H, today I found the new kernel Kernek-Desktop 2.6.31.8 will cause system lock down when I try to connect to any wifi assess point. I updated to 2.6.31.8 from Opensuse-11.2-update days ago and today it's my 1st time to try to connect to wifi with this new kernel.
Downgrade to 2.6.31.5 will solve this problem.

I have two computers:
- one is my desktop, running ubuntu. it has two NIC's one is wired (eth0), the other is wireless (wlan0).
- the other is my laptop, running archlinux. two NIC's as well (eth & wlan).
I would like to connect my desktop to my router via eth0 and connect my laptop to my desktop via wlan0, providing internet access to my laptop. i would like both computers to be able to use the internet simultaneously (not all packets would be forwarded).
Any manner of doing this would be ok, but if this is a simple enough task to do it by simply configuring some files (e.g. /etc files) rather than installing some unnecessarily big application, then that would be wonderful!
Also, not really as high a priority but if possible, i would like this to perhaps not be limited to my laptop. connecting any device (a psp or pda for example) to the internet this way (making it a hotspot in a sense) would be super! encrypting the connection (WEP for instance) would be ultra-mega!
Miscellaneous info:my desktop uses dhcp to connect to the router.

No window popping up, no error message... anyone has got an idea what else I should do in order making it work? or how else can I use skype without logging into private networks?
